At a minimum, it's an admirable array of alliteration. Chris already had this turn-based strategy game that was developed by Harebrained Schemes and published by Paradox Interactive on his radar. This made it easy for him to agree to check it out for this episode featuring Kevin from Save the Game Media as our special guest. Set in an alternate version of the 1930's, the plot revolves around a customizable crew of agents recruited by a mysterious benefactor to thwart the evil machinations of an ancient cult. With just that snippet and a glance at the art direction, we can see that the developers were heavily inspired by the pulp fiction of that era. Will this coalesce into an enjoyable romp or an awful slog? Our hosts have given it the requisite hour, let's find out if they'll keep playing after the time is up! It's running and falling, but with shadows and dragons. For a change of pace, the Xbox Game Pass “Surprise Me” button has selected the tactical role-playing game developed by Harebrained Schemes for this episode. If the title did not give it away, this game is set within the Shadowrun universe, which is actually best known as the setting of the long-running cyberpunk tabletop RPG. As a single-player game, will this console RPG be able to capture that tabletop experience? TSAP S03E18 Sam speaks with composer, Jon Everist, about his journey into music composition, his recent work on Disintegration, the sources of his inspiration and more! Jon On the Disintegration Score: "I wanted to capture both the fragility and hopefulness of the human spirit," explains composer Jon Everist. "The solo piano motif propels the piece to a crescendo with the rest of the orchestra where our heroic theme is revealed, representing the power and ingenuity of humanity coming together for a common good. This is the theme of the resistance." "Jon Everist is an American video game and film composer from Seattle, Washington. He first gained notoriety with his award-winning score for Shadowrun: Hong Kong (2015) and continues to work with longtime collaborator Harebrained Schemes and Paradox Interactive to produce soundtracks for their games. His most recent score for BATTLETECH (2018) was nominated for "Best Video Game Score of 2018" at the 34th Annual ASCAP Screen Music Awards and won honors at the 2019 Jerry Goldsmith Awards for Best Video Game Score." Speculative futuristic war. Speculative futuristic war never changes. Welcome to "Battle" week, in which Video Game Grooves brings the fight to you with a couple of fighty soundtracks that sound nothing alike but share at least one thing in common: circularity. Meaning vinyl. Yes it's too clever, let's move on. This week we are joined by Jacob Chase of the VGM WAX blog, which recently celebrated its first anniversary covering a more literate form of video game music on vinyl record. We recommend you swing by and check it out! Jacob and Jeremy focus on the dynamic musical score for Battletech, the Harebrained Schemes strategy game based on the iconic tabletop franchise. The unorthodox-but-appropriate musical stylings of Jon Everist underscore the futuristic-yet-feudal storylines while still capturing the flavor of giant stompy 'mechs shooting each other on far-flung worlds, and we highlight a couple of selections to illustrate that. Anthony is excited about Battle Garegga, from Limited Run Games. This vertical shooter lies at an interesting nexus point for the arcade shooter genre, and the complex musical layers of its soundtrack are a great late-era jam. Then we put Jacob in the hot seat to talk about the story behind VGM WAX, and we have a good old discussion about the process of "coverage" of video game music on record. How do we approach it, what drives us in our respective media, and what is it that we hope to share and give to others? So come listen and be shared with and given to.

No interviews and no guest hosts, just Tony and Dennis talking about games. A big mix this time (even the tabletop segment makes a return!). Pinball: Pinball topics consist of Chicago Gaming Company announcing they will no longer be revealing their third remake pin at the 2018 Texas Pinball Festival and the announcement of a Pinball Palooza in the Chicago area (due to a split between the two partners who put together Expo for years). Dennis also talks a bit about a project Laser War machine, and an article he co-wrote about Ted Zale. Video Games: A huge mix of games gets discussed. Specifically: Subnautica, Dragon Ball FighterZ, XCOM 2: War of the Chosen, Gems of War, Into the Breach, South Park: The Fractured but Whole, and BATTLETECH by Harebrained Schemes. We also talk some about the recent Nintendo Direct event. Tabletop: Yes, a brief return, regarding the fallout of a long-ago mentioned project from Palladium Books for Robotech RPG Tactics. Morte permanente, armadilha mortal, amigos... argh.
