Welcome back to the Ties That Bind, a project of the Foreign Policy Research Institute examining the past, present, and future of NATO and the transatlantic relationship. We often assume our safety is a “government problem,” but guests Admiral Rob Bauer, the former Chair of the NATO Military Committee, and Strategic Communications Advisor Eleonora Russell argue that this mindset is our greatest vulnerability. Drawing from their 2025 book, If You Want Peace, Prepare for War: A Blueprint for Deterrence, they challenge the idea that military strength alone is enough to protect our future. In this special episode of the Ties That Bind we discuss the core lessons from the book, what a “whole of society” approach really entails, how to effectively rebuild trust and engage citizens and industry, and what the future of the alliance may look like if we start fighting for the “we” in a world of “me.” Get full access to FPRI Insights at fpriinsights.substack.com/subscribe

Recent court documents and newly released files have thrust the long-term connection between billionaire Les Wexner and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein back into the spotlight, prompting a closed-door deposition before the U.S. House Oversight Committee. Wexner hired Epstein in the late 1980s as his personal financial manager and granted him significant control over his wealth, including power of attorney and placement as a trustee for his foundation—relationships that lasted for about two decades. Epstein appeared frequently in financial records tied to Wexner and was deeply involved in managing Wexner's assets, with some government files indicating that Wexner's name was redacted in sections of the so-called “Epstein files” and noting that Wexner is listed as an unindicted co-conspirator by the FBI. Congressional investigators have cited indications that Wexner's support helped underwrite much of Epstein's financial base, potentially facilitating Epstein's ability to operate and expand his network. In response to these revelations, Wexner has portrayed himself as having been “duped” by Epstein and has denied any knowledge of, or participation in, Epstein's criminal conduct, asserting that he severed ties after discovering that Epstein had stolen from him. However, lawmakers and survivors challenge that narrative, arguing that the extent of financial transfers—reportedly approaching a billion dollars in stocks, gifts, or direct funds—suggests deeper involvement and enabled Epstein's rise. Critics also point to documents showing unsent messages allegedly between Epstein and Wexner and to Wexner's continued presence in documents and images from the files. The scrutiny reflects broader questions about how closely Epstein was intertwined with powerful figures and whether those relationships contributed, directly or indirectly, to his ability to engage in widespread abuse.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-epstein-chronicles--5003294/support.

In today's message, Pastor Jack teaches us that to make room for God's greater blessings, we must actively work to loosen and break unhealthy soul ties from our past—those corrupted connections formed through compromise in relationships—which lock us into a limited mindset and prevent us from receiving the new and better things God has stored up for us. He emphasizes that God desires for our end to be better than our beginning, and just as new wine requires new wineskins, we must get rid of old, limiting attitudes and unhealthy attachments to make space for the increase, breakthroughs, and improved relationships God wants to bring into our lives. By obeying God's Word, our desires are purified, and we can confidently ask for and receive the abundant blessings He has already reserved for us, but we must make the decisive choice to let go of the old to embrace the new.Tune in now!Join us for service every Sunday at 9 and 11am (PST) and Wednesday at 7pm (PST)If you received Christ through this message, text JESUS to (253) 859-0832We would love to hear how God is touching your life through this ministry! Welcome back to the Ties That Bind. This week, we go even further north, to Finland, one of the alliance's newest members. Like the other frontline states we've visited this season, Finland shares a turbulent and complicated history with Russia that has long molded its security and foreign policy. But unlike the other frontline states, it was not a member of NATO at the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. February 24, 2022, proved to be a lynchpin moment for how Finnish society viewed its security and its future. In this episode, we'll hear from two Finnish experts about that moment in time, both culturally and politically, about the process and challenges of Finland's NATO accession, the country's strategic role in the Arctic, and what it means for the alliance. We'll also hear about Finland's whole-of-society defense model, how the country's culture has informed its security calculus, and what other allies can learn from the Finnish experience. And we'll also discuss lessons for Finland's history for Ukraine.Featured Guests:* Minna Ålander is an Associate Fellow at Chatham House and a Non-Resident Fellow at the Center for European Policy Analysis.* Joel Linnainmäki is a Research Fellow at the Finnish Institute of International Affairs and a former special advisor to the former Foreign Minister, Pekka Haavisto.Listen the previous episode on Latvia here. Exploring and Collecting African American History Harriet Tubman is, if surveys are to be trusted, one of the ten most famous Americans ever born. Yet often she's a figure more out of myth than history, often rightly celebrated but seldom understood. Tiya Miles's Night Flyer changes all that, probing the ecological reality of Tubman's surroundings and examining her kinship with other enslaved women who similarly passed through a spiritual wilderness and recorded those travels in profound and moving memoirs. Tiya Miles is the author of eight books, including four prizewinning histories about race and slavery. She is a two-time winner of Yale's Frederick Douglass Prize and a two-time winner of the National Council on Public History Book Award. Her 2021 National Book Award winner, All That She Carried: The Journey of Ashley's Sack, a Black Family Keepsake, was a New York Times bestseller that won eleven historical and literary prizes, including the Cundill History Prize. All That She Carried was named A Best Book of the Year by The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, The Atlanta-Journal Constitution, NPR, Publisher's Weekly, The Atlantic, Time, and more. Her latest work, Night Flyer: Harriet Tubman and the Faith and Dreams of a Free People, was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award in biography. Her other nonfiction works include Wild Girls: How the Outdoors Shaped the Women Who Challenged a Nation, The Dawn of Detroit, Tales from the Haunted South, The House on Diamond Hill, and Ties That Bind. Miles publishes essays and reviews in The New York Times, The Boston Globe, The Atlantic, The New York Review of Books, and other media outlets. Miles is also the author of the novel, The Cherokee Rose, a ghost story set in the Native American plantation South. Check out more books by this author at your library. Miles has consulted with colleagues at historic sites and museums on representations of slavery, African American material culture, and the Black-Indigenous intertwined past, including, most recently, the Fabric of a Nation quilt exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Her work has been supported by a MacArthur Foundation "Genius" Award, the Mellon Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Guggenheim Foundation. Miles was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, and she is currently the Michael Garvey Professor of History and Radcliffe Alumnae Professor at Harvard University. Welcome back to the Ties That Bind. This week, we are looking further south along NATO's eastern flank at Romania.Romania has long advocated for increased NATO and US presence in the Black Sea. Since the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, the importance of the Black Sea and Romania's role have been reflected in an increased NATO presence and multiple defense and infrastructure investments. The country has been a critical actor in helping the Ukrainian war effort, serving as a logistics and military training hub, and securing Ukrainian grain exports in the first years of the war.In this episode, we'll hear from three Romanian experts about the country's role in NATO and Black Sea security, its defense investments, and plans to address strategic infrastructure challenges that have far-reaching significance for the alliance. We'll also hear about what's happening on the domestic front, notably the long-term repercussions of the annulled 2024 presidential election. While public opinion shows high support for NATO, Romania and its neighbors continue to be targeted by long-term Russian influence campaigns, and we'll hear how these are affecting social attitudes towards NATO and Western institutions.Featured guests: * Antonia Colibasanu, Senior Analyst, Geopolitical Futures, FPRI Senior Fellow* Eusebiu Slavitescu, European defense analyst, former Romanian MFA* Alina Bargaoanu, Communications expert, University of Political Studies and Public Administration, BucharestListen to the previous episode on Poland in NATO here. Welcome back to the Ties That Bind. This season, we are looking at NATO from a bit of a different vantage point, specifically that of the frontline states. How are frontline states investing in and planning for their defense? How are they thinking about their role and contributions in the Alliance and on the world stage? How have their historical experiences shaped how their governments and societies think about defense, countering disinformation, and changing economic realities? And how are they preparing for a potential conflict with Russia? This week, we are looking at Poland, a country that has completely transformed its military and defense capacity over the last two decades. Periods of transition are not always painless, and we'll hear what challenges Poland has faced and what opportunities lie ahead as it looks to become a leading voice within the alliance and on the world stage.Featured guests: * Anna Fotyga, former Polish Foreign Minister, 2006-2007* Tomasz Szatkowski, former Deputy Defense Minister, 2015-2019, and Ambassador to NATO, 2019-2024* Jakub Romaniuk, Programme Director, Foundation Institute for Eastern Studies Get full access to FPRI Insights at fpriinsights.substack.com/subscribe
Have you felt trapped in something of your own making for a long time? Did you make a "deal with the devil" in your life that you're still trapped by? Maybe it's an abusive relationship that you feel trapped by because you haven't worked in years and don't make your own money. Or, maybe it's a job you hate that you've stayed in for decades because you could never figure a way out of. If you are feeling trapped by something right now this episode is for you.I talk about my own journey of leaving a survival career that I never wanted this week. I too felt like I made a deal with the devil. Just like Ariel from The Little Mermaid I felt like I signed my voice away to the sea witch Ursula for a career I never wanted. But, as we know Ariel rescues herself and that's just what I did and you can too.Support the showFind Us: https://www.jackiebrubaker.com/ https://loveyouevenmore.com/ https://www.instagram.com/jacquelinebrubaker/
As the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur approaches, let's explore the covenants that bind us and how we return again and again to the home of our soul. Return to the Home of Your Soul Series We begin the church year by returning not just to a place, but to each other. This four-part series invites us to reconnect with the essence of our shared spiritual life, the center that holds us through practice, reason, covenant, and love. Throughout the month, we will reflect on the enduring vision of our faith and the ways it draws us toward a shared future. We'll consider how regular spiritual practice shapes our lives and helps us grow. Together, we'll explore the role of reason as a vital companion to faith, and we'll honor the deep promises that bind us to one another. First Unitarian Church of Dallas is devoted to genuine inclusion, depth and joy, reason and spirit. We have been a voice of progressive religion in Dallas since 1899, working toward a more just and compassionate world in all of what we do.
