In a show packed, as always, with quality music, your host Jason Drury begins the show with THE JAMES BOND SUITE from the compilation album JOHN BARRY - THE POLYDOR YEARS: THE CONCERT JOHN BARRY (Quartet Records) by John Barry Jason then continues with THE REIVERS (CONCERT SUITE) by John Williams from La La Land Records new 2-CD set release of music from the classic 1969 film starring Steve McQueen. That is followed by a concert suite of music from the 1980s Gerry Anderson ‘Supermacromation' series TERRAHAWKS (Silva Screen Records) by Richard Harvey. Jason then continues with the "Main Title" from the original 1963 film THE PINK PANTHER by Henry Mancini, released in a new 2-CD set by Quartet Records over Christmas 2024. Afterwards, you'll hear selections from Laurie Johnson's swashbuckling score for THE LADY AND THE HIGHWAYMAN (Dragon Domain Records), ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN from the crowdfunded re-recording of Frank Skinner's score from Intrada Records and a suite from the 1961 Disney family drama GREYFRIARS BOBBY from the album THE FILM MUSIC OF FRANCIS CHARGIN from Naxos Records. Jason then rounds off the show with ‘The End' from another recent release from Quartet Records, another 2-disc reissue, this time from the 1991 Martin Scorsese remake of CAPE FEAR by Bernard Herrmann, adapted, arranged and conducted by Elmer Bernstein. ‘Where life had no value, and death sometimes had its price. That is why bounty hunters appeared.' For decades, the Italian, or Spaghetti Western, has entertained and thrilled cinema audiences all over the world. Its distinct style, as well as its inventive musical scores, has influenced and inspired actors, filmmakers, and composers. It is a genre that is still enjoyed today by many. This unusual but entertaining ensemble of films influenced not just the western film as we knew it, but also had a lasting effect on many other movies. Some of which were produced long after Italian westerns had ridden off into the proverbial sunset of cinema history. On today's episode, join Jason Drury and special guest Italian Western music expert John Mansell as they uncover the musical delights of this quirky but important collection of sagebrush sagas. The unique musical sounds crafted by the composers you will hear go largely unnoticed and underappreciated today. Enjoy! John Mansell's book, ITALIAN WESTERN: VIOLENT IMAGE, SAVAGE SOUNDTRACK – THE MUSIC OF SPAGHETTI WESTERNS is available now on Amazon. In this documentary, Neil travels back to his home town of Birmingham to learn more about what he considers to be the city's best kept cultural secret – Grosvenor Road Studios: the family-run sound facility that came to be known as ‘Birmingham's Abbey Road'. Still in operation today, the studios were founded 80 years ago by John Taylor, and his business partner Charles Hollick, to record music - which they did prolifically; as well as expanding into creating soundtracks and recording dialogue for iconic television series' and blockbuster movies. To help reveal the story, Neil talks with John Taylor's wife and creative partner Jean Taylor, their two successful musician sons Christopher and Richard Taylor, and Birmingham popular music academic, Jez Collins, from the Birmingham Music Archive. On the 10th September 2024, the music from the Marvel Animated series DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS was released by Dulcima Records on 10th September, exactly 40 years after the show premiered in the UK. The show's music was written by British composer Johnny Douglas, who, in addition to having a diverse career in film and television, was the composer of music for Marvel's animated series in the 1980s, which included SPIDER-MAN, SPIDER-MAN AND HIS AMAZING FRIENDS, THE INCREDIBLE HULK, G.I. JOE, and TRANSFORMERS. His filmography includes the classic 1965 sci-fi adventure CRACK IN THE WORLD and the British children's classic THE RAILWAY CHILDREN. Louise Camby, Johnny Douglas' granddaughter, is currently researching a book on his life and career called TRACKS TO MY GRANDFATHER'S SUCCESS, and in October 2024 she spoke with Jason Drury about her grandfather's life and work, how the book was coming along, and how, by chance, she discovered music from DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS in Johnny Douglas' archives. During the show, we'll hear music from DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS, as well as other music from Johnny Douglas' career. British composer Stuart Hancock's most recent work on the animated epic KENSUKE'S KINGDOM Kensuke's Kingdom helps establish the children's book adaptation as one of the year's most sweeping and heartfelt stories. The film is a good old-fashioned adventure rendered in gorgeous hand-drawn 2D animation with a voice cast that includes Sally Hawkins, Cillian Murphy, and Ken Watanabe. The story concerns a boy who is swept overboard during a storm on a worldwide sailing trip with his family and washes ashore on an island in the Pacific Ocean. While there, he realises someone is nearby, aiding him with his survival. The script for the film was by award-winning British scriptwriter Frank Cottrell-Boyce based on the book by celebrated British author Sir Michael Morpurgo, who is most well-known for his book WAR HORSE, also adapted into an acclaimed film by Steven Spielberg. In November 2024, Jason Drury had the pleasure of speaking with Stuart Hancock via Zoom from his home in Leighton Buzzard, England. During the conversation, they discussed his work on KENSUKE'S KINGDOM and the similarities and differences between scoring for commercials and narrative work. ABOUT TODAY'S EPISODE: What happens when faith collides with fame? In this thought-provoking episode, I chat with award-winning artist Steph Carse, who pulls back the curtain on his journey in the entertainment industry. From performing alongside music legends to navigating Hollywood, Steph shares the personal highs and lows that refined his calling, showing how God has been shaping his mission all along. We explore: Using Gifts as a Calling: How living out of his car and collaborating with top artists helped Steph recognize his talents as more than just skills—they were a calling. Redemption Stories and Real-Life Miracles: Steph reveals powerful stories, like that of a woman who overcame abuse to find her voice in gospel music, touching hearts and sparking healing for others. Facing Modern Challenges: With social media's influence and shifting family dynamics, Steph talks about the struggle for self-worth and how his projects address bullying and identity in today's world. Standing Firm in Faith: Together, we discuss how the Church can reclaim its role in the arts, bringing light into an industry that deeply influences culture. Is it possible for God to use the arts to revive hearts and stir faith? Tune in as we unpack this question with Steph's remarkable testimony of surrender and purpose. This episode will challenge and inspire you to see entertainment as a mission field, igniting hope and healing in unexpected places. ABOUT GUEST: While many may recognize Emmy ® Award winner Steph Carse as a world-class vocalist, in actuality he is a Jack-of-all-trades: a writer, editor, producer and director, songwriter, and music artist with multiple awards and accolades to his name. Having sold over half a million records and garnering fans and awards from around the globe, one would never imagine after his breakout success in (1993) he found himself at square one in 1997, with no money, living in his car, seeking his purpose. Since launching the CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO PODCAST Patreon in April of 2021, we've offered our patrons exclusive perks based on the tier they signed up for. One of those perks is participating in all request programs. If you want to join in future all-request shows, please head over to our Patreon page, and join the community in any tier that is $5 USD/month or above. Once you do, you can participate in all upcoming all-request programs. Before we get into today's episode, we must first discuss its origins. On October 30, 2023, I worked late into the evening to complete the first ALL REQUEST HALLOWEEN SPECIAL. The audio was recorded, tracks were chosen, and the editing was finished. I tried to export the show, and to my horror Adobe Audition crashed. I restarted the application and tried again. Same result, but this time I received an error message indicating that my voice-over file was corrupt. It took nearly an hour to record the voiceover and several hours to edit the episode. I was also in the midst of one of my busiest years ever, so I didn't have the time or energy to do it all over again, so I informed my Patrons that the show would be postponed and rescheduled for this year! Thank goodness I have a wonderful community of patrons over there, they understand and waited patiently for the show to be done.  Fast forward almost 365 days, and here we are; everything has been re-recorded, re-edited, and... I am pleased to announce that the show has been successfully exported for you to enjoy today! For this first ever Patreon All Request Halloween Special show, you get to hear some spooky favourites from the biggest supporters of the Cinematic Sound Radio Podcast including Alan Rogers, Al Brown, Glenn McDorman, Don Mase, Will Welch, Angela Rabatin, Deniz Çağlar, Jérôme Flick, Stacy Livitsanis, Lee Wileman, Joe Wiles, Jeffrey Graebner, Victor Field, Eldaly Morningstar, Steve Karpicz, Dave Williams and Carl Wonders. They requested tracks from such composers as Ronald Stein, John Harrison, Christophe Beck, Herdís Stefánsdóttir, Christopher Young, Jerry Goldsmith, James Horner, Wojciech Kilar, Bruno Coulais, Bruce Broughton, Dean Kopri, Joesph LoDuca, Alejandro Amenabar, and John Williams. Thank you to everyone who participated. Again, if you didn't get a chance to submit a request but want to be a part of the next all-request program, we'd love to have you join the CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO PODCAST Patreon community. However, you should not feel obligated to participate. I am not forcing anyone to join. Remember, this podcast is always free to listen to, but if you want to support the program and join the Patreon community, we'd be delighted to have you. Welcome to the highly anticipated latest episode of THE ARCHIVE on the CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO PODCAST. Your host Jason Drury begins the show with the end titles from SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW (La La Land Records) by Edward Shearmur, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. Jason then features some archival releases from 2024 that have caught his eye so far this year, including music from 1993‘s THE LAST ACTION HERO (La La Land Records) by Michael Kamen, the world premiere release of music from the classic 1983 cartoon series DUNGEON AND DRAGONS (Dulcima Records) by Johnny Douglas, and selections from the film that featured the first-ever collaboration of Steven Spielberg and John Williams, THE SUGARLAND EXPRESS (La La Land Records) from 1974. Then, to commemorate the character's 85th anniversary, you'll hear "The Batman," from Michael Giacchino's score for THE BATMAN (Watertower Music) in 2022. After that, you'll hear music from Dragon's Domain Records' two 2024 releases. You will first hear music from the 1981 TV miniseries GOLIATH AWAITS, composed by George Duning, followed by selections from the iconic 1981 western adventure film DEATH HUNT, composed by Jerrold Immel. Jason then rounds off the show by playing the end credits from the recent release from the 2000 animated/live-action Disney film DINOSAUR (Intrada Records) composed by James Newton Howard. On today's program, I'm celebrating the 28th anniversary of CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO, which began on September 20th, 1996, at CHMR / C101.5 FM at Mohawk College in Hamilton, Ontario. The station is now called INDI 101. For all of our anniversary programs, and yes, some years I forget to do one, I try to create something new. Sometimes it's clever, and other times it's just a simple, dumb idea that's relatively simple to implement. This show is the latter. Since the show is now 28 years old, I've decided to base it on that number. So, you'll hear tracks that are either 28 seconds long, scores that are 28 years old, films with the number 28 in the title, the 28th track on the album, take place in 1928, or were written in 1928 featuring composers Mark Snow, John Murphy, Charlie Chaplin, Thomas Newman, Danny Elfman, Terence Blanchard, Joseph Conlon, Marc Sharman, David Arnold and Dominic Frontiere. Admittedly, this is silly, but it was quite enjoyable to put together. In any case, I hope you'll enjoy it. —— Special thanks to our Patreon supporters: Matt DeWater, David Ballantyne, Joe Wiles, Maxime, William Welch, Tim Burden, Alan Rogers, Dave Williams, Max Hamulyák, Jeffrey Graebner, Don Mase, Victor Field, Jochen Stolz, Emily Mason, Eric Skroch, Alexander Schiebel, Alphonse Brown, John Link, Andreas Wennmyr, Matt Berretta, Eldaly Morningstar, Jim Wilson, Glenn McDorman, Chris Malone, Steve Karpicz, Deniz Çağlar, Brent Osterberg, Jérôme Flick, Sarah Brouns, Aaron Collins, Randall Derchan, Angela Rabatin, Michael Poteet, Larry Reese, Thomas Tinneny, William Burke, Rudy Amaya, Stacy Livitsanis, Rick Laird, Carl Wonders, Nathan Blumenfeld, Lee Wileman, Daniel Herrin, Scott Bordelon, James Alexander, Brett French, Ian Clark —— Cinematic Sound Radio is fully licensed to play music by SOCAN. While focusing on John Williams' music and career by analyzing the composer's approach to writing music, the book also discussed three significant film scores in Williams' filmography: JAWS, STAR WARS, and RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK. In early June 2024, Jason Drury had the pleasure of speaking with Emilio via Zoom at Linnaeus University, Sweden, where he was an Associate Professor. In this episode, CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO pays tribute to a genuine soundtrack hero and pioneer… Intrada Records founder, Douglass Fake, who passed away at the age of 72 on July 13, 2024. Who was Douglass Fake? Well, one of Doug's closest friends and colleagues, Joe Sikoryak, wrote a beautiful obituary a few days after Doug's passing on Facebook. You can read it HERE! I personally never met Doug, but I did communicate with him and Roger Fiegelson, Intrada's executive producer, many times when requesting albums to play on my soundtrack show, which began in 1996. Doug and the rest of the crew at Intrada have been supporting the show for over 25 years, and I do remember Doug telling me that if I ever needed anything, I should call or email him or Roger and they'd send whatever I requested down immediately. It didn't matter if it was a new release or a release that came out ten years ago; if they had it in stock, they'd send it down. We planned to release this episode a few weeks ago but a few things popped up that slowed down production (work and illnesses). On top of that, the fine folks at Intrada Records were guests on Robert Emmett's soundtrack radio program "The Norman Bates Memorial Soundtrack Show," where they produced their own three-hour tribute show to Doug on Saturday August 24, 2024. So, not to step on any toes, I decided to delay the release of my own tribute show to today. So, on today's show, we'll be playing not only selections from Intrada's extensive soundtrack library, but also messages of remembrance from fans such as Amer Zahid, Chris Malone, Ian Clark, Jason Drury, Jim Wilson, Nick Zwar, Lee Wileman, and Victor Field. Doug's was a legend in the soundtrack community and we owe him a debt of gratitude for bringing much joy into our lives. Thank you, Doug. You will be missed. Enjoy the show! PS – During the program, you'll hear me mention that Chris Malone produced a heartfelt tribute to Doug on YouTube. You can see that video by clicking HERE! I also mentioned an episode of The Goldsmith Odyssey dedicated to the production of Intrada Records RIO CONCHOS recording. On Sunday, June 16th, 2024, Jason Drury traveled to London's Barbican Centre to watch and listen to music performed by the world's greatest film music orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra. The evening celebrated the orchestra's 90th anniversary of performing film scores. Under the direction of the equally great Dirk Brossé, they performed suites from twenty scores, some well-known, some underrated, all pure quality. Listening to all that wonderful music gave Jason an idea. Why not produce an Archive Show celebrating the music of the LSO featuring scores all performed by this wonderful ensemble? So, that's what we are going to do today. In addition, as with the concert, Jason will play one cue from the film or a small suite. And, because it is a ‘concert', you will hear several of these suites with as little contribution from your trusted host as possible. Welcome to Cinematic Sound Radio's celebration of the music of the London Symphony Orchestra.
