Bounty Board is a podcast about entertainment, most times centered on videogames. We go in-depth on topics, share some news, and then wrap it up with our suggestions for what you should be doing with your free time. Critically minded consumers and players, sharing their opinions honestly.
Happy Tuesday! Joe Erskine, baseball afficionado and Private Division producer, is BACK! The regular season is coming to an end and the Cardinals are out of the race. Joey's Mets on the other hand, are making a push for what could be a really fun post-season. We do eventually get around to talking games: some Cult of the Lamb, some College Football, some Space Marine 2. APOLOGIES for the wonky audio, my usual method for recording had a hiccup. Luckily I had a back up running, the quality does suffer a bit though. Bear with us, it will be avoided next time! You can listen to us below, or on iTunes , Spotify, and Google Play! Happy Friday! Enjoy the last day of the workweek with Caleb and returning guest Jon Everist. Jon composed the score for last year's Lamplighter's League by Harebrained Schemes, a pulpy, noir-infused mix of Indiana Jones and XCOM. Come hang while Caleb asks about the jazz influence on the score, what it is like composing music for games and they're unique complexities, and together they dig into composition as expression in established franchises. https://www.twitch.tv/nerdybitstvPatreonYou can listen to us below, or on iTunes , Spotify, and Google Play! Episode three of the "On Playing With" miniseries is focused on playing video games with kids, and for Caleb it is specifically about playing games with his oldest kid, Charlee. The two of them have played games before, but in the last few months Charlee took ownership of her first game, taking the time to learn how to play it and beat it herself, and it caught dad off guard a bit. Come listen as he describes what it is like to watch your kid become passionate about something you hold a great deal of passion for yourself. https://www.twitch.tv/nerdybitstvPatreonYou can listen to us below, or on iTunes , Spotify, and Google Play! On episode two of the "On Playing With" series I focus in on my family's long running family game night. But not before digging into some of the history that brought us to being capable of having family game nights. There is overlap in some ways between this conversation and the last episode. Including how, sometimes, I am just glad to log off after a long night of walking the mom's through a new game. I also start to dig into what it's like to teach someone how to play games, which is actually a lot harder than you might think it is.https://www.twitch.tv/nerdybitstvPatreonYou can listen to us below, or on iTunes , Spotify, and Google Play! Here it is. The first episode of my "On Playing With" series. This episode is focused, as the title suggests, on the ever-evolving social structure of playing games with my group of friends, how that group changes (for good and bad), how the games constantly change, and how balance is a dish best served carefully. There are good times and bad times bundled up in this experience. And it's an experience I wouldn't trade, though I do sometimes wish I could switch it off for a few days. Well. Here we go! It's 2024. And while that is, on its own, a wild statement, it is a true one. With the new year I wanted to push forward in several different ways for NerdyBits and myself. So, I am starting a new mini podcast series titled "On Playing With" starting tomorrow. The series will focus on the dynamics of playing games with different groups of people in my life, how those dynamics shift, and how the experience changes as a result. I am also conducting several interviews in the coming weeks. We will see the return of Joe Erskine and Jon Everist, as well as a few more. The stream is returning to Mondays and Wednesdays. And finally, I am pushing the Patreon again. All of those things are detailed a bit more in this episode, so come settle in! https://www.twitch.tv/nerdybitstvPatreonYou can listen to us below, or on iTunes , Spotify, and Google Play! We did it! We survived until another Mission Impossible movie came out! Are we going to make it until the next one? Indiana Jones is back! IS it good? Is it weird? Is it the end? Find the answer to all of those questions here. TL:DR Action movies are silly fun and this is one of those movies. Harrison Ford looks like he's having a blast, the surrounding cast do a tremendous job, it's written well and, you know what, it feels like Indiana Jones. What more could you ask for!?You can listen to us below, or on iTunes , Stitcher, Spotify, and Google Play! So this is a weird one! I'm switching up the way I do movie reviews! I find it so much more gratifying and have received far more feedback spending a few weeks on a piece, ruminating, than when I slap together a 1300 word movie review the day after. It all just ends up feeling like hunting for the best tagline rather than the best thought. So, in the interest of enjoying watching movies in a critical capacity, I am transitioning the short "reviews" into audio bits I'm calling Cutscenes! On this first edition of Cutscenes I talk about Disney's Elemental, Wes Anderson's Asteroid City, and the new comedy No Hard Feelings. in the future I will do one movie per little episode. Most of the time. Cheers! You can listen to us below, or on iTunes , Stitcher, Spotify, and Google Play! So whether you have an Apple or Android device, we are available for streaming and download. What is good, friends!? It has been a minute! Lots of life changes and a move and a new baby on the way and all sorts of stuff just kept rolling in. But I'm back! And hopefully without a ton more interruption! Join me this week as I connect and reset the clock with Zara Varin, a wonderful human I met with my grandmother in 2019 at Halo: Outpost Discovery. We haven't spoken to each other in real time since that weekend years ago, so we take some time to reacquaint before we dive into a handful of really great topics. These topics range from Spider-Verse 2 to Marathon, gaming accessibility to not being a dick, design to Japanese baseball. Join us as we bemoan the end of baseball season, talk about the games we have been getting into, and take a lengthy detour into why people should feel less inclined to share their shitty opinions. Happy Tuesday everyone! When Caleb sets out to write a review on a game, it rarely takes him months. Well…5 months after completing Citizen Sleeper, a slick and meaningful TTRPG inspired game by solo developer Gareth Damian Martin (Jump Over the Age), Caleb finished his piece on the game and then had the opportunity to talk to Gareth about what he calls his favorite game of all time. Gareth and Caleb talk about all sorts of things. From street food vendors working out of the back of their scooters, to living above the remains of civil war embattlements and plague mass graves, to creating art that you hope connects with people on a personal level. There is so much in here to enjoy, so come hang out. Read Caleb's piece on Citizen Sleeper here. You can listen to us below, or on iTunes , Stitcher, Spotify, and Google Play! Happy Friday everyone! Last week I got the chance to sit and talk with Tomas Sala, creator of the Falcon dogfighting game Falconeer. Tomas has been making games for more than two decades, in some fashion, and is now working on a follow up to Falconeer called Falconeer: Bulwark. Together we dive into what it is like becoming familiar with a universe you created, building games in that space, and of course I asked him what food game he would make in the Ursee. His answer didn't disappoint. Come hang with us! Happy Friday everyone! I had the opportunity to sit down with Joe Erskine this week. Joe is a Producer at Privat Division and formerly worked at V1 Interactive (Disintegration) and Vicarious Visions (Diablo 4), and we sat down to talk everything from games, to pizza, to sushi, to baseball. A traveling man, Joe is from Kansas originally but has lived on both coasts, currently calling New York home. It's a great chat, Joe was a blast to talk to, and maybe…maybe he'll be back again! Happy Monday everyone! On this episode of Bounty Board Caleb got the chance to talk to Videogame and Film Composer Jon Everist (Battletech, Shadowrun, Disintegration). Together they talk about creating music, how the tools for creation have evolved in the last ten years, and the merit of putting yourself in a box so you come up with unique solutions. Also, of course, they talk about food, and Jon gives a great answer to how he would incorporate music into his food game. Come hang out! It's a good time! Happy Monday everyone! The NerdyBits Show is on a bit of a hiatus as Ryan is in the process of moving AND having a baby (don't worry, we confronted him about this). So, to give you all something to listen to, Caleb sat down and recorded a solo episode last week. It's been a long 10 years since Caleb started this website and started writing about videogames seriously. There have been victories and failures, lulls and peaks, but nevertheless, he persists. Back in college, when proposing a senior thesis, Caleb was batted down by a few professors who couldn't manage to see a way that videogames could be important. More than that, the thesis was specifically about the Assassin's Creed franchise and its potential to be a tool for learning about time periods far in the past. Since then the AC games have made their way into the academic sphere, going so far as to catch the eye of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANQL5z_JEpQ (Harvard Egyptologist Peter Der Manuelian). So, in the spirit of never letting haters get under your skin, Caleb recorded his thoughts now, as a long-time journalist, podcaster, and now Professor of Game Design at Webster University. Is it worth it to say things like, "I told you so?" Maybe... https://twitter.com/LubWub (@LubWub)
Happy Tuesday everyone! A few weeks ago I had the honor of having the third and final co-host of The Habibi's Podcast, Fawzi Mesmar, on Bounty Board! Fawzi is currently the Vice President of Editorial at Ubisoft but has been a consummate globe trotter up to this point, working at studios from Australia to Japan to Germany! Together Fawzi and I talk about a sampler platter of topics, from teaching students, hunting for the source of creativity, making games in today's industry, to the most appropriate conversation ever: Our shared love for Ramen. Fawzi was an absolute joy to have on. I have officially earned my Habibi's badge, now I just have to worm my way onto their show! I jest, but in all seriousness, this was such a great chat folks. Come hang out while we shoot the breeze. https://twitter.com/LubWub (@LubWub) https://twitter.com/FawziMesmar (@FawziMesmar)
Happy Friday folks! A few years ago Caleb stumbled across the trailer for a little indie title called FAR: Lone Sails. He was immediately smitten by the games muted color palette, striking vistas, and phenomenal score. Little did he know that he would find an experience that would help him put context to the grief of losing his grandfather. https://www.nerdybits.com/read/2019/4/19/far-lone-sails-learning-to-cope (FAR: Lone Sails helped me deeply. ) Fast forward almost three years and he had the splendid opportunity to record an episode of Bounty Board with a few members from the Okomotive team! Come hang out with Caleb as he speaks with Fabio Baumgartner (Programmer and Sound Designer) and Phillip Stern (Level Designer, Artist, and Writer) about their process and the work they contributed to FAR Lone Sails and to the upcoming FAR: Changing Tides. It is a lovely conversation that spans topics from learning to develop apart from the friends you have known for years, to quickly agreeing that burritos might be the best form of food, to knowing your own limits and maybe not playing a game if it triggers something in you. This was such a great chat folks. Happy Friday. Happy Friday folks! I had the absolute honor to sit and chat with Osama Dorias, Senior Game Designer at Warner Bros. Interactive on Gotham Knights, co-host of The Habibis podcast, and overall just delightful human being. Osama had mentioned on Twitter a few weeks ago that he wasn't sure how he was going to pick his favorite game of 2021, so I offered to have him on so we could work through it. And so we did! We each walk through our top 5 from the last year, as well as toss up a few honorable mentions. We talk about being parents in the industry, how we approach game playing and creating with our kids, and of course we wrap the conversation with food talk. We even snuck a little bit in about our caution regarding NFTs. This was such a wonderful time y'all. Happy Friday. Have a great weekend! https://twitter.com/LubWub (@LubWub) https://twitter.com/osamadorias (@osamadorias) https://twitter.com/the_Habibis (@the_Habibis)
Happy Tuesday everyone! Caleb recorded this episode with Richard a little more than a week ago and just never got to uploading it…so that's a thing. But this conversation was a blast. Richard and Caleb have been friends for years (coworkers once), and they sit down to talk about something that both are excited about: The Future of Esports. There is a lot of potential for Esports to catapult into the general viewing population, but it isn't quite there yet. Caleb and Richard discuss why, what they think could help games make their way into sports bars, and when they think we will start to see that happen. Happy Wednesday everyone! Got a bit of a different episode this week! Remember that podcast from a little over a month ago where Caleb talked about life and mental health and personal pursuits? Yeah, this is another one of those. Caleb is still trying to figure some things out, personally, but wanted to record another one on one episode to let you know where his head is. Happy Monday everyone! Got a bit of a special episode this week! With E3 looming on the horizon, Caleb thought it was a good idea to finally sit down and record another episode of Bounty Board. The last few months have been kinda tough and he wanted to let people in on what has been going on, his plans for future Bounty Board stuff, and also to catch you up on what he's been playing. Also, E3 is this week! With all the possibilities darting around, he HAD to chat about his excitement. Listen in and catch up with Caleb and get ready for a great week of game announcements. Happy Wednesday folks! Long time no talk! Bounty Board is back this week to kick off a series about storytelling in games and to help us get the ball rolling we have special guest Adron Buske! Adron hosts the Fictitious Podcast a show focused on diving into the “Storytelling Craft of Science Fiction and Fantasy” (we know, its fancier than we sound…). Having met at a local gaming expo in STL called Pixel Pop a few years back, Adron and Caleb have interacted several times over the years and finally they made the time to actually record. Together the two get into storytelling in games. For a long time games were seen as just a kids hobby, but as time has progressed, games have become more and more capable of telling truly masterful stories. Caleb and Adron discuss what works for them, what games they think of all the time, moments that captured their attention completely. They talk about many other things as well, so buckle up! This is a good one. https://www.polygon.com/2020/6/2/21278117/how-to-support-black-lives-matter-george-floyd-protests-donate-volunteer-police-brutality (HOW TO SUPPORT BLM) You can listen to us below, or on https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/bounty-board/id1250147253?mt=2# (iTunes ), http://www.stitcher.com/s?fid=141731&refid=stpr (Stitcher), https://open.spotify.com/show/4daSiZttgl09QGureHcs7o (Spotify), and https://playmusic.app.goo.gl/?ibi=com.google.PlayMusic&isi=691797987&ius=googleplaymusic&apn=com.google.android.music&link=https://play.google.com/music/m/I3bfdhd3zgjbx6ci7d6ah6bir2y?t%3DBounty_Board%26pcampaignid%3DMKT-na-all-co-pr-mu-pod-16 (Google Play)! Happy Friday folks! The prodigal son has returned! Eric, the one and only Hybridglass is back on Bounty Board, and aside from catching us all up on what he’s been busy doing, he’s here to educate us on all things important in Outriders. The upcoming Square Enix published, People Can Fly developed Action RPG is hastily approaching its release date on April 1st. With it landing on all platforms AND coming to Game Pass day and date, we figured what better time to do a deep dive on it!? Happy Friday folks! I tried to sit on this one until Monday, but I just couldn’t. Earlier this week I had the opportunity to talk to Rami Ismail. Rami is an indie developer, spokesperson, advocate for inclusion, foodie. All those things. In 2018 the Game Developer’s Choice Awards named Rami and Ambassador, making him the first Arab, and first Muslim given the award. Since then he has owned the title Ambassador. We sat down to specifically talk about diversity and crunch in the industry at large, but what ensued was a far more broad conversation about games. Games as an entry point for unheard stories, games as almost literal magic, games as a pursuit of the cutting edge, games about food, and games as a bridge between generations. Who would have thought we would both be able to share stories about teaching our moms to play games? This is a good on y’all. Happy Friday. Have a great weekend! Happy Monday folks! On this week’s Bounty Board Caleb sat down with the manager of the Hades Tigers Twitter account, Andrew (@Dentenstein) to discuss the return of the quirky, strange, eldritch beast that is Blaseball. The baseball betting sim launched last year, while real world baseball was getting its shit together, and quickly jumped to the top of the conversation. It is a unique game. From voting in elections to reading redacted rule books to players getting washed away to rogue umpires incinerating beloved players, Blaseball has something for almost everyone. With the Grand Siesta coming to an end, Caleb thought it would be a good idea to have Andrew back to talk about the intricacies of this new update, what he is excited about, and whether or not he sees a place for the sim to improve. Happy Friday folks! This week’s episode is a special one! With 2021 in full swing the NerdyBits crew is working hard to figure out what works best for us and for you, our listeners. So we’re changing things up a bit. The Nerdy Bits show will be adding the Salty One, Sergeant Sodium, and will begin talking about games as a part of the pop culture focus. That means this the last episode of Bounty Board as you know it. But have no fear, the show will continue. Caleb will use Bounty Board to do more deep dives with more focus! Starting with an episode featuring the manager of the Hades Tigers of Blaseball acclaim, and an upcoming interview with Vlambeer’s Rami Ismail. All of that aside! Hang out with us this week as we talk about EA freeing their studios to do what they need, why it is so hard to make friends in games, what it will take to get us to invest in VR, and Sony getting rid of Movies and Shows. Happy Wednesday! Bit of a late episode here, but sometimes interviews get delayed because sometimes people have priorities, or delayed flights. On this episode Caleb interviews Daniel Drake, a local STL game developer and creative. Dan runs Professional Pancake Art company https://dancakes.com/ (Dancakes) and is working on finishing up his board game Anthromancer, a successful kickstarter project due to ship later this year. This conversation is rambunctious. The duo talk about digital currencies, creativity, eliminating crunch (personally and universally), and kinda…like…the meaning of life and creating art in it? Happy weekend folks! Forgive our slight delay. Moving some things around for syndication purposes and making sure we have all the boxes ticked. You understand. This week on Bounty Board the crew each brought their own topic to the show, and boy did Ben bring a doozy! Microtransactions are seemingly the way of the future. Happy Monday! We have a bit of a special episode this week! A while back now, we recorded and episode with @Dentenstein Andrew Dent, and owner of the @HadesBlaseball Twitter account, where we talk exclusive about The Game Band’s surprise hit Blaseball. We talk about the quirkiness of the baseball sim and its appeal to those not entirely invested in large scale sports. Happy Friday! Everyone has seen the comment on Twitter, “Keep politics out of games.” But what does that even mean, really? What qualifies as “politics”? It is a question with nearly as many answers as their are days in a month, but nevertheless the crew sits down to talk through politics in games. Sometimes we think it is needed, sometimes it’s unnecessary, sometimes it’s done really poorly. Regardless, we are all able to acknowledge that games have been political since the beginning, and that it seems recent that people began to take umbrage with that fact.Join us on this week’s episode of Bounty Board!BLACK LIVES MATTERNews:Cliff Blesinski Returns to GamesAOC Plays Among Us on Twitch, 700,000 Viewers Tune InMicrosoft to Share Digital Sales w/ GameStop on Xboxes Sold by RetailerNBA 2K21 Has Unskippable AdsHOW TO SUPPORT BLMYou can listen to us below, or on iTunes , Stitcher, Spotify, and Google Play!
