Interview by Kris PetersThe Dead Daisies have always had an underlying stream of blues coursing through their music. It is an age-old style of music that has influenced pretty much every conceivable genre over the years, although rock music has benefited the most. With vocalist John Corabi coming back on deck for last year's album Light 'em Up, The Dead Daisies embraced their blues side even more, culminating in late night jam sessions while recording that album at the legendary FAME studios progressing into recording sessions which led to their new album Nothin' But Trouble, which is due out on May 30.The album pays homage to the work of blues legends such as BB King, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker and Howlin Wolf, with The Dead Daisies reworking their classic songs and sprinkling enough of their own DNA through the tracks to make them their own. It is an outstanding body of work from a band with an impressively high back catalogue, and showcases some of the influences that have seen the members hone their craft.HEAVY caught up with Corabi to find out more."You know what I'm excited about so far is that the first two songs that we released have been getting great feedback from everybody," he began. "And as I was saying earlier, this was it was what we call a happy accident. This whole thing came about in such a weird, random way. We went to this legendary studio in America called Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, and it was kind of a bucket list thing for all of us, including Marti Frederiksen (producer). So we went down there with the thought in mind that we would just maybe write and maybe do a little bit of recording down in this legendary studio. It's a legendary place, but also it's a functioning studio, and they do museum tours through this place and each night around dinner time, they bring in 20, 30 people. So we'd take a break. And then we kind of sat and thought about it. We're like, well, okay, the tour was over. We were done eating, and we'd crack open either a bottle of whiskey or some wine. And we thought we could go back to the hotel and sit and watch TV all night, or, we're here, let's just jam. Let's see. Let's just have some fun. So we kind of started jamming some blues that everybody was familiar with, obviously, like Crossroads, Going Down, and Born Under a Bad Sign. And then it was weird, we just kind of sat, and Marti kept the session rolling. We listened and thought, okay, this is really cool. This is really cool, so what we did is during the day we worked on what became the Light 'em Up record, and we just continued working at night and putting together 10 of our favourite blues songs and so far man, everybody's been raving about it."In the full interview, John spoke more about the band's intention to honour their musical roots through a collection of blues tracks. He explained the challenges of reinterpreting classic songs, emphasizing the need to make them their own while maintaining their integrity, using When the Levee Breaks as a reference for transformation. He shared insights on the evolution of specific tracks, such as Terror Plane Blues into Take My Soul, and acknowledged the blues' influence across various genres. We talked about the process behind reworking other people's music, which songs were the easiest to do and which ones more difficult and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

"And as we wind on down the road ..." of Season 10 of Finest Worksongs, we turn our attention to perhaps the original Monsters of Rock: Lez Zeppelin. Their fourth album (sometimes called "IV," sometimes referred to as "ZoSo") was released in 1971 and was an immediate and longstanding success. "IV" became one of those albums that everyone seemingly had thanks to the might of muscle of "Rock and Roll," "Black Dog," the marathon majesty of "Stairway to Heaven," and the mystical and mysterious "Battle of Evermore" -- not to mention the pounding of "When the Levee Breaks." It's an album that showcases the best of Page, Plant, Bonham and Jones, and it truly stands the test of time -- more than 50 years later.
What role do drums play in Rock? Should that be keeping the beat or leading from the front? Who are some of the greatest drummers in rock music? The beat goes on as Jim DeRogatis and Greg Kot focus on the contributions of drummers to rock music with drummer Joe Wong. Wong also hosts a podcast on drummers called The Trap Set. Today, I speak with Candice Ivory about her new project, When The Levee Breaks. As said on her website After releasing three acclaimed albums of jazz-driven original songs, vocalist Candice Ivory reveals a whole new sound on When the Levee Breaks: The Music of Memphis Minnie. Raised in Memphis and based in St. Louis, Ivory hails from an illustrious musical family that shaped Memphis's secular and sacred sounds. Her great-uncle was the singer and guitarist Will Roy Sanders of the Fieldstones, one of the premier Memphis blues bands from the 1970s to the 1990s. Ivory grew up in the church, and by the age of eleven, she was singing in a choir that featured the soon-to-be-famous R&B artist D'Angelo. When the Levee Breaks brings together all of her formative musical experiences in a tribute to Memphis Minnie (1897-1973), whose powerhouse vocals and compositional creativity served as inspiration for Ivory's own innovations as the Queen of Avant Soul. Produced by singular guitarist-bassist Charlie Hunter, a onetime D'Angelo collaborator, Ivory's When the Levee Breaks is a midnight run to the crossroads, where jazz, blues, gospel, and R&B all converge. https://candiceivory.com/ paypal.me/LamontJack Join Patreon --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/africanamericanfolklorist/message

We're back this week to dive deep into the discography of one of the greatest rock bands of all time, Led Zeppelin. Specifically, we'll be exploring their albums released between 1969 and 1973, picking our favorite and least favorite songs from each. Led Zeppelin, the iconic rock band formed in 1968, released their self-titled debut album in 1969. The album featured a diverse range of rock and blues-influenced tracks, showcasing the band's talent and establishing their unique sound. The album opens with the energetic "Good Times Bad Times" and includes other standout tracks like "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You," "Dazed And Confused," and "Communication Breakdown." Led Zeppelin's debut album set the stage for their future success and solidified their status as one of the greatest rock bands of all time. Led Zeppelin II - 1969 Following the success of their debut, Led Zeppelin released their second album, Led Zeppelin II, later in 1969. The album featured a heavier sound and showcased the band's growth as songwriters and performers. It includes the iconic track "Whole Lotta Love," along with other notable songs such as "What Is and What Should Never Be," "Heartbreaker," and "Ramble On." Led Zeppelin II further established the band's dominance in the rock music scene and demonstrated their ability to create powerful and memorable rock anthems. Led Zeppelin III - 1970 In 1970, Led Zeppelin released their third studio album, Led Zeppelin III. This album showcased a more acoustic and folk-influenced sound compared to their previous releases. It includes tracks like "Immigrant Song," "Since I've Been Loving You," and "Gallows Pole," which blend the band's signature rock sound with elements of folk and blues. Led Zeppelin III displayed the band's versatility and willingness to experiment with different musical styles, earning critical acclaim and further expanding their fan base. Led Zeppelin IV - 1971 Led Zeppelin's fourth album, commonly known as Led Zeppelin IV or untitled, was released in 1971 and became one of the band's most iconic and commercially successful albums. It features the legendary track "Stairway to Heaven," a monumental rock epic that has become one of the most celebrated songs in rock history. The album also includes other hits such as "Black Dog," "Rock and Roll," and "When the Levee Breaks." Led Zeppelin IV solidified the band's status as rock legends and remains a classic album revered by fans and musicians alike. Houses of the Holy - 1972 In 1972, Led Zeppelin released their fifth studio album, Houses of the Holy. The album continued to push the boundaries of their sound, incorporating elements of funk, reggae, and even orchestral arrangements. Tracks like "The Song Remains the Same," "The Rain Song," and "No Quarter" showcased the band's musical maturity and their ability to create dynamic and atmospheric compositions. Houses of the Holy further cemented Led Zeppelin's reputation as one of the most innovative and influential rock bands of their time. The storm clouds of war have burst forth upon the denizens of Appalachia, and no one is safe. At Emmett Mountain, a desperate defense is waged against an overwhelming force, while at Foundation, an even more insidious plan is put into motion. Deep inside her lab, Major Lilith finds herself hunted…but who is the predator…and who is the prey? Day and the Overseer make final preparations to break into Vault 79, unaware of the greater dangers facing the region, and the Colonel races against time as she leads a rescue force into the mountains of the Savage Divide. Not all is well at the Whitespring as Major Stein returns, discovering that MODUS has plans of his own for the future of Appalachia and Trader Red finds herself in the deepest depths of the Mire…perhaps only steps away from her destiny.
“You are Number 6…” There's a t-shirt somewhere that perfectly sums up the philosophy of life, which is as follows: “You can only trust yourself and the first six Black Sabbath albums.” After 4 brutally brilliant albums of heavy metal doom & gloom, and one with a greater focus on more progressive music and experimental soundscapes, BLACK SABBATH finally managed to blend every facet of their sonic sorcery together into a single work that perfectly represents the epitome of their signature sound on their 6th studio record, SABOTAGE. It's time to “forthcomingly” break out “the good gummies” and find out which creamy condiment is even worse than mayonnaise (“That's different!”). Prepare to go “Junt Huntin'” for the gals with the “Junt Jorts” and discover what it means “When the Levee Breaks” on a date after embracing your bucket list “a little bit” and JOIN US as we dive into the culmination of every good thing about BLACK SABBATH captured in one place with their 6th record, SABOTAGE. The Far Middle episode 96 begins with birthday wishes to jazz guitarist Geroge Benson, and moves on to a timely dedication as Major League Baseball’s 2023 season gets underway in just eight days from this episode’s release. Going back to 1996, for episode 96, when no baseball players were inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, Nick offers a thoughtful look on players that aren’t in Cooperstown, but who have the career accomplishments to warrant induction. Nick then transitions from America’s pastime to the time of Teddy Roosevelt during his tenure at the Civil Service Commission. Nick discusses Roosevelt’s efforts to upend the spoils system, and replace it with a meritocracy in terms of hiring government employees. The idea was to go from who you knew, to what you knew, explains Nick. Related, Nick examines government today and how key positions are staffed. “I fear that our government has steered far, far away from where Teddy Roosevelt was looking to take it in the late 1800s,” says Nick. He asserts governmental decisions are not being made by those with the most experience and best skillsets, resulting in ineffective government being exposed at the worst possible times during crises. The discussion of meritocracy is connected to America’s regional power grids, and the need to let competition drive the best generation sources to power our energy systems. Nick focuses on the PJM grid, and revisits Winter Storm Elliot that hit the mid-Atlantic on Christmas Eve this past December. Nick underscores that natural gas, in particular Appalachian natural gas, didn’t just save the PJM grid, it saved lives. Despite the facts, there are environmental groups looking to fool the public and force an agenda. Environmentalists are executing their new sneaky two-step technique, which Nick dubs their “tame and blame” campaign. “If we allow natural gas to fairly compete and grow with private investment and innovation, then no more grid weakness, anywhere,” says Nick. He then presents six stark truths about wind and solar at scale on our power grid, which Winter Storm Elliot again exposed. When climate policies of the Left start to infiltrate the infrastructure of the power grid, cracks are going to appear quickly. And the same can be said of office real estate today in America’s major cities. Nick explains how climate change policies are stressing both grid capacity of power pools as well as balance sheets of urban office tower companies. In closing, Nick recalls Led Zeppelin’s best-selling album, Led Zeppelin IV, and in particular the track, “When the Levee Breaks.” In a similar vein, Nick argues that if, “the Left keeps ruling, the grid is going to break, and if the Left keeps ruling, the debt portfolio is going to break.”

In this week's episode (S4, Ep. 21 - When The Levee Breaks), we witness what might be Jared Padalecki's most outstanding performance in the entire 15 seasons of Supernatural. "When the Levee Breaks" comes from a blues song recorded by Memphis Minnie and Kansas Joe McCoy in 1929. Kansas Joe McCoy & Memphis Minnie wrote this song for the 1927 Mississippi floods that destroyed about half of the Mississippi Basin- hundreds of thousands of people lost everything and regions farms suffered major damage. The song reached maximum success in the cover by rock band Led Zeppelin. Please listen to this episode in its entirety. The penultimate episode of any season ramps up the drama, but hooboy, this one is made of angst! We're closing in on the end of Chuck's One Perfect Season, where everything worked perfectly for his story from start to finish. At least he's never really gonna meet with this much success ever again (because 15.20 doesn't count lol). Sam's in demon detox, Cas is doing Heaven's errands, and Dean is breaking his own heart. SURPRISE!! It's episode 96! For this spontaneous hurrah before the end of summer, Emma covers the twisty and turn-y case of Alstory Simon and the Innocence Project, and Anish tells an original in-between tale of old families, terrible secrets, and occultish oaths (any resemblance to our own family — or yours — is purely coincidental). In terms of current events, we discuss matching tattoos, The Sandman, Dimension 20, Segways, and Emma's recent stint as a top secret researcher and soon-to-be position as professor. This summer, prepare for a new twist on an old favorite. When his basement floods in a freak superstorm, regular guy Tab is transformed into: The New Aquaman! Goodbye spandex and talking to fish, hello commanding sharks to attack local government and nailing sexy mermaids! From the team that brought you the John Wick series comes a blockbuster that is almost too big for the big screen! Starring Rich Evans as The New Aquaman, Jon Lovitz as the villainous Handlebreaker, and featuring absolutely no ties to the current DC cinematic universe or that hack Zack Snyder. Also staring:- The Sony Lotto- The St. Louis Curse- A Lack of Heat Prep- Learned Apathy- Why Are You Still Talking to Me?If it wasn't enough for video games to get you to gamble on costumes, voice lines, and gun skins, here comes "the supply chain". Now we've got to fill out a Powerball ticket just to get a chance to maybe give billionaires even more money for their hot new console. And the games too, on the other side we've got family-friendly Nintendo making every new Mario game a limited time event. Gotta grab it at release or it'll be gone before you know it!Something happens when you pass through that big ol' arch in the midwest. Like it was a Lex Luthor super-machine doomsday device that Superman has to foil, it saps the luck from everyone that goes through it, siphoning it to Lex himself so he can be even richer. But this is real life, not the hypothetical Superman V movie. Hell exists and it's not in Michigan, folks. St. Louis: it's where hope goes to die.Frigid outside? A dusting of snow? Well, kids, you stay home, and everyone else, don't bother coming in! Bundle up, we don't want you getting that nasty frostbite! You know, all those cases of urban-living frostbite! 112°F outside? Hot enough to bake cookies in your car? TOO BAD! Go to your manual labor job! No, we wont give you any water! Kids, you still gotta walk home in the heat. Don't worry about your little heads getting heatstroke, that's not a real thing!Remember trickle-down economics? That sure worked didn't it? Well, they were on to something. Plenty of things have the ability to trickle down. Including the ability to sit there and dick around when you could be helping. All because it's a little out of your way, or not "technically" in your job description. Hemming and hawing like you're thinking about it when we all know you'd rather sit on your tuchus while people do more in 5 minutes than you do al day for less.If someone you know quits their job and leaves town and doesn't specifically tell you to keep in touch, or you learn this information second hand. In general, THEY DO NOT WANT TO EVER SEE YOU AGAIN. Especially in this day and age where we're still connected with social media, if they don't go out of their way to follow or friend you. They don't care. And this is for personal relationships. Work? Pretend they died. All this and more on this week's episode! Boston broke a defensive struggle open with a offensive burst in the second half that Miami couldn't match. Pete and Mike discuss how Boston's collective force has worn the Heat down, how that led to Miami's atrocious shotmaking, and how the attrition of the last couple of seasons should inform how the Lakers build their roster moving forward. In the winter and spring of 1927, record-setting rain fell across the central United States. The Mississippi River swelled to capacity, and by April, the water breached major levees. It was the start of the most catastrophic river flood in American history. When the flood threatened the town of Greenville in the Mississippi Delta, white plantation owners pulled tens of thousands of Black workers from the cotton fields and sent them to the river. An army of hundreds of men worked day and night, piling sandbags to battle the raging waters. But soon, despite their efforts, the Great Mississippi Flood would unleash destruction on the Delta.Listen ad free with Wondery+. First recorded in 1929, did you know that the acclaimed Led Zepplin song "When the Levee Breaks" was about the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927? On April 21, 1927, following months of unprecedented rainfall throughout a watershed covering much of the United States, the mainline Mississippi River levee crevassed north of Greenville, Mississippi, creating the worse US national disaster until Hurricane Katrina. The event shaped the Delta, Mississippi, national flood control policy. Some claim it even changed America itself. Ramsey Russell and Hank Burdine are both natives of the Mississippi Delta with strong connections to Greenville. Keeping it light and conversational, they meet in the South Delta to discuss this epoch event 95 years later.
