On this episode of DAMSEL (no distress) we feature one of our many BOSS LADIES: Jordan Ellis. Jordan is the Hufflepuff behind Jordandené, a geeky lifestyle brand based in Brooklyn, NY. Jordan is also the co-editor of The Sartorial Geek (a nerdy magazine, podcast, and online community), and she helps geeky businesses navigate internet marketing at Jordandené Social. To learn more about Jordan or to buy any of her nerdy gear you can follow her on IG @jordandenenyc and or visit her website https://jordandene.com/.
Life is wild right now, friends. I didn't want to let another week go by with no upload, and since Jordan is here for what would have been ECCC, we sat down to have a quick fangirling sesh about V.E. Schwab. The timing on this fangirl session is perfect because Victoria has a new book, "The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue" coming out with Tor this October. Jordan and I have both read a smattering of Victoria's work and are both big fans of her work (and her as a person!) and chat about "Vicious," The Darker Shades of Magic trilogy, and the "Invisible Life of Addie LaRue" event that Jordan attended last week. Thank you so much, San Diego Comic Con, for inviting us back for a second year to do a live podcast recording! This year we were so excited to chat with one of our favorite humans, the lovely Sam Maggs. If you don't know Sam from her best-selling books like The Fangirl's Guide to the Galaxy and Wonder Women, or her videos on Nerdist, or her work with video games, or her Fangirl Galaxy collection with Jordandené, you may know her from her new job writing Captain Freaking Marvel! And a few other super cool characters. Sam has a lot up her sleeve, and it's all very exciting! Sam is truly an inspiring person, and I feel so lucky to have had this chance to talk with her. And I'm so glad we can share our conversation with you! Please follow Sam all over the internet @sammaggs and check out all of her amazing projects! And as always, thank you so much for listening. Dina specializes in Disney vacations and helping you take care of all the details so you can enjoy your vacation without worrying about anything. Head to Kith and Kin Travels to book your next trip! This week I'm so excited to introduce you to my artist friend Jesse Corinella. He did the cover of The Sartorial Geek: Issue 003, most of the free coloring book pages offered at Jordandené, and most recently has been co-hosting Sartorial Geek art parties with me! We're calling them Draft! Drink and Draws, and they're exactly what they sound like. Artists of all skill sets (ranging from very skilled to very not skilled, a.k.a. me) can come, hang out, relax with a drink, and draw some fun things. We have a loose theme based on whatever's happening in pop culture, and some of the art turns into weird products we actually list for sale (you're welcome). One of Jesse's recent projects is so weird and wonderful, lovingly titled Cadavre Exquis. It started as a bit of a whisper-down-the-lane comic book and has morphed into an entire film experience. It was one of the first truly collaborative/community-driven projects I ever saw come to life, and I'm really excited to share what Jesse and his network are working on with you all. For updates as Cadavre Exquis comes together and to see other fun projects that Jesse is working on, follow along at: @torsoinc and @jessecorinella. Have a great week and stay nerdy! Hello, Sartorial Geeks! I'm so excited to introduce you all to my friend Che Grayson. Che is an incredible writer who just finished her masters degree in NYU's film program. She's been a TED resident, wrote for Bitch Planet, and is now working on her latest project: Magic Hour. Magic Hour is a TV anthology series that features magical and mystifying stories with Queer & POC folks at the center. The show explores identity through the lens of fantasy, science-fiction and horror. Similar to Black Mirror or The Twilight Zone, each episode will be its own contained story with a beginning, middle and end. The thing that connects all of the episodes together is the occurrence of "magic hour," a time of day when everything looks freaking gorgeous or, in the show's case, a time when parallel dimensions and realities overlap and collide with each other to create remarkable stories that stretch the imagination and shock the senses. When the magic hour begins that's when the real fun starts. Each episode will explore themes like love, belonging, humanity and sacrifice. Stories that will keep you up at night, will make you think, or just creep you the hell out. Tales of robots exploring the gender binary, girls curing addictions, bigots turning into animals and femmes giving birth to celestial beings (to name a few). Does that sound like everything you've ever wanted? Me, too. Magic Hour needs our help to happen. There are only a few days left to join their Kickstarter campaign (which also features a few exclusive Jordandené products), so please head to magichourtv.com to pledge before it's too late! This week, we're chatting all things Orphan Black with superfan Miriam Salzman. Not only will our next issue of the magazine feature all things sci-fi and STEAM, but the back to school season is really putting us in the mood for anything science-y. Needless to say, now is the perfect time to binge all five seasons of Orphan Black if you haven't yet. (Even if it's just to distract yourself from the fact that summer's almost over.) Miriam is incredibly passionate about the Orphan Black fandom. She's so passionate, in fact, that she devotes her time to making intricate Orphan Black friendship bracelets and selling them on her Etsy shop, Summer of String. Those same friendship bracelets found their way onto the wrists of the Orphan Black cast and crew and eventually, yes, onto the show itself. Rachel's blue friendship bracelet may have been made by Kira on the show, but in real life, it was made by Miriam! Sound familiar? You may recognize her shop name from an earlier sponsored post on our blog. You can catch Miriam's bracelets on screen in Orphan Black season 5, episodes 7-10. Be sure to keep up with Miriam and Summer of String at https://www.etsy.com/shop/SummerOfString or @summerofstring and #summerofstring on social media. Don't forget that our Kickstarter campaign for issue 003 of the magazine is still live! As of right now, we're more than halfway funded and need your help to reach out goal before September 21st. This episode is sponsored by Jordandené. Welcome back, Sartorial Geeks! This week, we sat down to chat with Benita Botello, founder of Book Beau. Commuters, we've all been here: you have a long train or bus ride ahead of you. All you want is to sit down and get lost in your current read for the next half hour or so, but when you take it out of your bag, the cover is bent, the pages are crushed, and your precious book is ruined. What's a bookworm to do? Benita sought out to fix this problem when it destroyed one of her prized signed paperbacks. After testing out old iPad cases and countless prototypes, Book Beau was born. Benita told us all about how her business started from a sewing machine on a kitchen table to working with major companies such as Amazon and OwlCrate. The Sartorial Geek team adores Benita, her products, and her inspiring story, and we hope you will, too! Be sure to check out this amazing business at https://bookbeau.com/. Benita was kind enough to offer our listeners 20% their entire order with the code: sartorialgeek. Jordan Ellis is the founder of The Sartorial Geek podcast, magazine and blog. She is also the owner and operator of Jordandené (jordandene.com), maker of handmade nerdy apparel and home goods. Today on the podcast we welcome our good friend, Jordan Ellis of Jordandené. She is an amazing woman who has a geeky lifestyle brand based in Brooklyn. She sells things that are juts subtly nerdy, from T’s, to tanks, to mugs, to phone cases and more. Jordan also recently started the Satorial Geek, a quarterly magazine and now a podcast all about girl power and promoting that nerd culture. Jordan is so amazing that it’s no wonder that this is our third time having her on the show! We’ll give you an overview of the other episodes Jordan has done with us, in order to give you a bird’s eye view of her business and some of the strategic moves she’s made. In this episode, however, we discuss adding extra aspects to a physical product-based business as a way to contribute to bigger goals that might not be present today. We also discuss the challenges around diversity, representation, and inclusivity in the online space and look to Jordan as a business owner who is really leading the way. We also get her insights on how to stand out in a super tiny product-based niche. There is so much to be learned from Jordan and we hope you enjoy her company as much as we do! There's so much to talk about in Black Panther, and I was so excited to chat with Robyn Warren of Geek Girl Strong and Chavon Coleman of Geeky and Creepy. Since seeing Black Panther together opening night (along with Robyn's mom and Chavon's nephew), we haven't really been able to stop talking about it. There's just so much to say about the story and the characters and the way everything looks, and each viewing makes you notice something new. We start with the incredible women in this movie. From Okoye to Nakia to Shuri (which Robyn calls the holy trinity), each is inspirational in her own way. They combine strength and wisdom to create a powerful support system for their people. And they look really freaking good while they're doing it. We also discuss the way Black Panther portrays both African and African-American cultures. It was a pleasant surprise that this comic book movie goes so deep. Even though comics touch on some really deep topics, we haven't seen as much from the movies yet. Until now. If you haven't seen the movie yet, you really must. And then come talk about it with us! Thanks so much for hanging out with us! Please subscribe, leave us a review, and check out our Patreon to help us keep these episodes coming. And hang out with our guests online: Robyn Warren is the source of power behind Geek Girl Strong. Her main goal in life is to help girls and women realize that they are the super heroines they thought they would only read about. @GeekGirlStrong Chavon Coleman handles marketing ideas at Jordandené. She's a proud Hufflepuff and expert in all things Marvel. @GeekyAndCreepy Join our Patreon for bonus gifts and content!Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/sartorial-geek. Today on the podcast, we have Jordan Ellis of Jordandené. Oh my gosh, this girl! She is so awesome. We have known Jordan for what feels like forever, but really it has only been two years. She was the first student ever for both of us, and since then, Jordan has gone on to grow a giant geek-chic business where she sells goods of all different types. She has shirts and aprons and the cutest little kids clothes ever and it just warms our hearts to see how much she has been able to accomplish in just two years, and she shares so much knowledge with us today, all about growing a product-based business online. She talks to us about the changes that her business has made since she first started on Etsy way back in the day, how she is now on Squarespace and how that works for her. She also shares the mission behind her business, how she creates an experience for her customers, a unique way for her to have scarcity in a product-based business, how blogging works for her, and all about hiring your first employee. She goes deep and gives some tips for those who are just getting started in the product world as well as those who are wanting to up-level what they already have. Thank you for listening!
