From Bishop Barron's very first social media post close to 20 years ago, he and Word on Fire as a whole have recognized that the online world is a rough-and-tumble place. While most, over the years, have interacted with our content with charity and respect, even if they disagree, there's always been a gallery of trolls who traffic in insults and profanity and are only interested in taking potshots at the ministry rather than engaging in conversation. So it goes—that's just part of the price of entry into the digital world, especially when evangelization is your goal. The internet culture, however, seems to have taken a dark turn recently. Whatever limited restraint people used to show in their online interactions seems to have evaporated in a toxic cloud of mob-fueling—and mob-fueled—rage, replete with distortions, deceptions, and sometimes even explicit calls for violence. Exacerbated by the rise of the use of AI, bots, and anonymous accounts often based in foreign countries, it is increasingly difficult to know with whom you are engaging online or what their motives are. And sadly, physical threats from online sources are now also something we must take very seriously. So how should we move forward from here? Is it still possible to make evangelical headway in this increasingly noxious online environment? If so, what principles should guide the way? The Documentary "Who Killed Nancy?"The 1986 biopic Sid and Nancy largely frames their deaths around a tragic, drug-fueled descent. However, if you are looking into the real-world investigation, the 2009 documentary Who Killed Nancy? directed by Alan G. Parker re-examined NYPD evidence and interviewed 182 people, heavily arguing that Vicious was physically incapable of the crime and pointing the blame back toward the missing money and independent dealers. The true identity of who killed Nancy Spungen remains officially unresolved, though her boyfriend and Sex Pistols bassist, Sid Vicious, was the prime suspect and charged with her murder. On October 12, 1978, Spungen bled to death from a single stab wound to the abdomen in Room 100 of the Hotel Chelsea in New York City. Because Vicious died of a heroin overdose less than four months later while out on bail, the case never went to trial and was legally closed. Over the decades, three primary theories have dominated the mystery:1. Sid Vicious Killed HerThis is the official police theory. The weapon used was a hunting knife owned by Vicious. He gave conflicting statements, initially confessing by saying, "I did it... because I'm a dirty dog," before later recanting and claiming he had been asleep after taking heavy doses of sedatives. 2. A Robbery and Drug Deal Gone WrongThe Hotel Chelsea was highly chaotic that night, with numerous drug dealers and visitors drifting in and out of Room 100. A substantial stack of cash belonging to the couple went missing from the room. Many of Vicious's peers—including Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren—strongly believed Sid was passed out from drugs and that a thief stabbed Nancy when she caught them stealing. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]3. Actor and Drug Dealer Rockets RedglareA prominent alternative theory points to Rockets Redglare, a late actor, stand-up comedian, and drug dealer who served as Vicious's bodyguard. Redglare had delivered drugs to the room hours before the body was found. According to some investigators and punk rock historians, Redglare allegedly killed Spungen during a struggle when he tried to rob the apartment. Army Veteran Manny Pasillas Lucio shares the combat story that changed his life forever.Born in Mexico and raised in California, Manny grew up navigating family tension, poverty, and the streets of Compton before deciding to join the Army after 9/11. After basic training at Fort Benning, he was sent to Fort Lewis, Washington, where he became part of a Stryker infantry unit and later joined a scout sniper platoon.In this episode of Urban Valor, Manny opens up about his deployment to Iraq, including missions in Mosul, Baghdad, Taji, and Baqubah. "Dangerous" and "vicious" dog law impacts animals, owners, rescue groups, dog wardens and humane officers A new Ohio law took effect in March, aiming to deal with "dangerous" and "vicious" dogs. It was inspired by a brutal attack on an 11-year-old girl named Avery Russell while she was on a playdate, and so the law is being called "Avery's Law." Avery was so badly injured that she was put into an induced coma for one week and spent several more weeks in the hospital, coming out on the other side with disfigurement to her face. The dog owner was convicted of failing to confine her dogs, sentenced to four days in jail, and required to pay a $450 fine. On Thursday's "Sound of Ideas," we'll walk through the Ohio legislature's unanimous response to this result with the passing of "Avery's Law." The new law codifies requirements related to dogs that attack people and other animals, while also impacting the work of dog wardens, humane officers and animal rescue groups. Welcome to Season 4 of Myths & Muses! This summer, the epic storyteller and cycle-breaker Shahrazad has taken the liberty of signing us up for some ImpossibleQuests. I know that might seem a little odd. But here's what I know about Shahrazad: When she makes a plan, it works. Whatever she has in mind for us, I know she wouldn't be putting us in this position if she didn't think we could take on the challenge. And I'm sure she'll have our backs along the way. In case you don't know why I trust Shahrazad so much on this, though, I'm using this first episode to tell you her story. Plenty of young readers like Vicious, and plenty of older ones like Cassidy Blake, and she believes the best story is the one that finds you when you need it.  Her greatest goal as an author is to make you doubt your reality. Not by convincing you that magic is real, but by planting a seed of doubt that it's not.  Cat Clarke was born in Zambia and brought up in Edinburgh and Yorkshire, which has given her an accent that tends to confuse people. Cat has written non-fiction books about exciting things like cowboys, sharks and pirates, and now writes YA novels. She lives in Edinburgh with a couple of cats, Jem and Scout, who spend their days plotting to spit up furballs at the most inconvenient times. She likes cheese A LOT, especially baked camembert.
