It's no trick (and not just because April Fools' Day was yesterday): We really are doing Jurassic Park (1993) on our latest episode. Though many have questioned whether or not the Steven Spielberg classic technically counts as horror, we're ready to put the matter to bed, tuck it in tight, and wish it sweet dinosaur dreams... or at least terrifying T-Rex nightmares. Because let's be real — this flick freaked us all out as kids, and given the fact that it's a movie about the OG monsters, it definitely meets Spooky Tuesday's standards. No one can take on three raptors alone, though, which is why we invited Why the Flick?'s Claire White to be our guide on this dangerous expedition. Follow Why the Flick? on Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok at @whytheflick. Check out their new episodes every other week on Apple and Spotify. BIG NEWS, SPOOKIES!We're getting a makeover!! Our new official look is here — and so is our merch store! That's right: We've got new art AND hats, shirts, and sweatshirts to match. Starting March 26 at 12:00 a.m. PST, our shop is open for presales. You've got until Friday, April 12 at 11:59 p.m. to get your order in, and we've got some very cunty stuff.CHECK OUT OUR SPOOKY TUESDAY MERCH HERE!References:Mummy Voice lol: https://youtu.be/G8qhrURrQbI?si=-OO8vL0LvoIlnt0MHere's what Monica was actually thinking of: https://youtu.be/mTWGf1gDUUQ?si=H6aDpyPpYOstYSS6https://collider.com/jurassic-park-facts/https://www.alltherightmovies.com/feature/25-facts-about-jurassic-park/https://theconversation.com/how-jurassic-park-changed-film-making-and-our-view-of-dinosaurs-203147https://www.theguardian.com/science/2009/feb/08/jurassic-park-dinosaur-inaccuracieshttps://www.wired.com/story/jurassic-park-the-ride-oral-history/https://www.stanwinstonschool.com/blog/jurassic-park-t-rex-robot-almost-eats-crewmemberhttps://gamerant.com/jurassic-park-horror-movie/
In the twenty-third episode of Season 10: Dealer's Choice, Kyle is joined for a one-on-one conversation with podcaster Claire White from Why the Flick to discuss the layers of character as it relates to mental illness, societal constraints, and personal discovery in Jeremiah S. Chechik's quirky and thoughtful romantic comedy Benny & Joon (1993).
During Prohibition, rum running had a king. Based out of Florida, with a special brand of criminal dealing, Bill McCoy became known for his truth in advertising - and his ability to avoid capture. Until he couldn't any longer. That, plus the history of rum, more musical theater references, and an invitation to Nevada. Pick up your copy of FLORIDA! right here! Thank you to Claire White from the Mob Museum! Check out the museum, and pay them a visit if you're ever in Las Vegas! All of the music was originally composed.
Monday morning live with Natasa Denman featuring one of her amazing authors, Claire White Claire is a trained and Registered General and Obstetric Nurse in Timaru, New Zealand. Returning to French Polynesia, she was a Registered Nurse in a cosmetic surgeon's clinic saving for travels. Born in Leeston, New Zealand, she was immersed in the local farming community with hardworking and generously community-minded parents who continue to serve others. Claire was told by many to write about her adventurous life on land, sea, and air as she has a zesty, enthusiastic passion for life. Embracing her time as a teenage exchange student in French Polynesia profoundly influenced her life. Immersed in the vibrant culture, she found herself drawn to the brave, adventurous yachties who fearlessly explored distant shores, inspiring her own sense of adventure. As a young bride in Western Australia's outback Derby, she started her own Girl Guide Company and learned to fly and paint. However, due to her marital status, she was not able to continue as a nurse. She was instrumental in changing this discriminatory judgment of others. Saddened by leaving the Kimberley region for Darwin, she faced the challenges with courage. In Darwin, she thrived in Accident and Emergency Nursing, enjoyed camping in Kakadu, and led Brownies. She pursued diverse interests like music, midwifery, and sailing while overcoming fears, performing on the piano at The Cool Spot and embracing singlehood anew. Claire embodies compassion and resilience, consistently exceeding expectations in her work. She acquired expertise in hyperbaric medicine, providing care for divers with the bends, patients with carbon monoxide poisoning, and those with anaerobic non-healing wounds. Her dedication led her to attend a hyperbaric medicine conference in Baltimore, USA. Through house minding, she financed a year of travels, exploring destinations such as Tahiti, Europe, the USA, and Canada. Using frequent flyer points, Claire returned to Darwin for her fifth International Yacht Race combining a flotilla of the world's majestic Tall Ships with 50-year celebrations for Indonesia's independence from Dutch rule. Between international yacht races, Cairns to Papua New Guinea and Darwin to Indonesia, she met Errol whilst wearing a Can-Can outfit at Darwin Sailing Club. She gained her radio operator's license, and assisted with twice daily position checks for the next three annual Darwin to Ambon Indonesia yacht races until civil unrest caused them to voyage the Kimberley for about 20 years. Denying Parkinson's Disease for years, now after a reverse sea-change for safety, Claire offers creativity through yoga, piano singalongs, and ukulele jams as they passionately raise awareness and funds for research and a cure. 3 Takeaways: 1. Proactivity - How life's experiences and attitudes can shape us into who we are. If it is to be, it is up to me. 2. Hope, help and inspiration for those dealing with Parkinson's from the perspectives of the sufferer, spouse/family member, carer, nurse and first mate. 3. Golden Rule - Life is full of challenges, and it's how we react and navigate that teaches us. In the forty-sixth episode of Season 9 (Keep It Musical!) Kyle is joined by a panel of guests, screenwriter Katy Baldwin, artist Anna Cullado, and fellow podcaster Claire White, to discuss the gaudy artificiality of Baz Luhrmann's operatic ode to Bohemian ideals, classic love story mythology, and the power of the stage in the madcap stylized musical of musicals that is Moulin Rouge! (2001).
Claire White | Religious Studies, California State University, Northridge"An Introduction to the Cognitive Science of Religion"In recent decades, a new scientific approach to understanding, explaining, and predicting many features of religion has emerged. The cognitive science of religion (CSR) has amassed research on the forces that shape the tendency for humans to be religious and on what forms belief takes. It suggests that religion, like language or music, naturally emerges in humans with tractable similarities. This new approach has profound implications for understanding religion, including why it appears so easily and why people are willing to fight―and die―for it. Yet it is not without its critics, and some fear that scholars are explaining the ineffable mystery of religion away or showing that religion is natural proves or disproves the existence of God. This talk provides an accessible overview of CSR, outlining key findings and debates that shape it.
Happy Spooky Season!!! My favorite time of the year! This year I decided to feature one of my all time favorite films, Scream. I literally watch this film every 3 months, sometimes more often, and it holds a very special place in my heart. Imdb plot reads: A year after the murder of her mother, a teenage girl is terrorized by a masked killer who targets her and her friends by using scary movies as part of a deadly game. Starring Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, David Arquette, Skeet Ulrich, Matthew Lillard, Rose McGowan, Jamie Kennedy, and Drew Barrymore. Directed by Wes Craven- I feel this film redefined the horror genre. The slasher style, and nods to former horror films makes the commentary so fun and spooky. It also begs the question, "What's your favorite scary movie?". I'm joined by my good friend Claire White from Why the Flick? podcast. She is so much fun to talk to and very knowledgable about films. Be sure to check out her podcast! Enjoy and Happy (almost) Halloween! On today's episode, we chat with Claire White, Director of Education at the Mob Museum in Las Vegas, Nevada. She also shares insider recommendations on offbeat places to explore so you get the most out of your desert getaway.
Las Vegas bills itself as "the Entertainment Capital of the World" and it's easy to see why with all the big names performing up & down the Strip on a nightly basis...and it's been that way for decades. But how did that all come to be...and what role did the world of organized crime play in making it happen? My guest for this episode of the podcast is here to help clear things up for us. Making her second appearance on the podcast is Claire White, the Director of Education for the Mob Museum in Downtown Las Vegas. Last time Claire was on the show, we went in-depth on Liberace & the impact he had on the Vegas entertainment scene. We briefly touched on the topic of the mob and their place in Las Vegas's entertainment history, but I thought it might be fun to get Claire back to go into a little more detail. We discussed the early days of Las Vegas entertainment, the Mob's role in helping to build up the industry in Las Vegas, and some of the prominent performers with alleged mob ties. If you want to learn more about the history of Las Vegas & the role of the mob in establishing the entertainment industry, pick up a copy of Bright Light City: Las Vegas in Popular Culture by Larry Gragg. And be sure to pay a visit to the Mob Museum on your next trip to Las Vegas. There's no question that Las Vegas is the entertainment capital of the world, and all through the city's history, it's played host to some of the most legendary acts of all time. Some names come to mind instantly, like The Rat Pack...Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin & Sammy Davis Jr. There's Mr. Las Vegas, Wayne Newton who's been headlining in Vegas since the mid-1960's. And of course, there's the King Of Rock N' Roll, Elvis Presley who sold out a record 636 shows at the International Hotel (later, the Las Vegas Hilton). But one performer made his mark on Las Vegas before any of those people. In fact, some would say he paved the way for not only past legends but the massive residencies that would come decades later. That performer is the one and only Liberace... My guest for this episode of the podcast is Claire White, the Director of Education at The Mob Museum in Downtown Las Vegas. Before she joined the Mob Museum, Claire spent several years working at the now-closed Liberace Museum, also in Las Vegas, where she learned all about the long & storied career of "Mr. Showmanship". If you want to check out some of the highlights of Liberace's life, check these out: Liberace performing "Chopsticks" Liberace live with the London Philharmonic Orchestra Liberace's dual role as villains, "Chandell" and "Harry" on the classic TV series, Batman Liberace's appearance on The Muppet Show Liberace hosts on MTV in 1985 __________________________________________________________________________ Become a Jeff Does Vegas Insider today for only $5 USD/month & enjoy all kinds of cool perks like early access to new episodes, commercial-free versions of EVERY episode, invites to exclusive live streams & videos, insider-only virtual hangouts and even real-life in-person hangouts IN Las Vegas! For the next entry in our summer series, we have the great fortune to be joined by the awesome Claire White from the (equally awesome) Why the Flick? podcast to discuss her favorite comfort film, Jurassic Park! We talk Spielberg, special effects, the ethics of cloning, and of course anything and everything dinosaur-related. We were so preoccupied with whether or not we could, that we didn't stop to think if we should, but then we did anyway, and it turned out good. Get your hands out of that triceratops dung and give it a listen!

Big Takeaways From Chava: Any tips for creating your own invitation/invitation suites? We want to design the invitation ourselves but how to best execute once we have the design. What card stock would you recommend? Any specifics on how to utilize a cricut? If you are thinking of getting a cricut for the first time for your wedding, don't do it.They are complicated. If you are used to using them, go for it! 110lbs or heavier for card stock. Anything with texture will look more lux. Have a candid conversation with your printer about what kind of paper they can use. Local printers are usually focused more on large print projects, and less on small ones. DIY will be a lot more time. And sometimes will end with you spending a lot more money than having ordered out because there will be trouble shooting along the way. From Anamaria: Ways to save money on custom invitations. Ask the stationer if they have semi-customdesignsavailable. While white ink doesn't offer semi-custom, you can find old designs you like and have them work with that which does decrease cost. From Hope: What is the best way to find postage that will compliment your invitation suite without the ability to customize stamps? Do you ever have issues with return addresses printed on the back of envelopes being sent back instead of to the intended recipient because it isn't on the front in the upper left hand corner? The post office releases new postage fairly frequently. When something comes out of rotation, it becomes ‘vintage'. You can find vintage postage through Etsy, or other places online. Be careful! There is counterfeit postage going around! Always put the invitation return address on the back flap. Make it smaller font than the mailing address. It shouldn't ever get sent to the return address. From Brigit: The whole USPS mailing process. Anything we should know about weight/stamps/ hand canceling (I know I've heard that term before but think it's more expensive??) Hand canceling stops the post office from running it through their machine with the barcode, but it doesn't guarantee it won't happen in another office. Some offices require extra postage for a wax seal or hand canceling. If it's just a cardinan envelope, put one stamp. If it has multiple things inside, put two stamps to just be safe. From Laura: What's the best way to address invites in the modern age? Re: lots of married friends who did not take their partner's name + which names comes first + including kids? The rules of etiquette are a little bit behind when it comes to modern addressing. Don't lose sleep over it. More formal: list the male first. Friend is the female but lives with a male: list the female first. Mr. __ and Mrs. ___ is okay. How formal do you want to be? There are a million different right answers. The etiquette rules can change from address to address. From Amber: What recommendations do you have for seating chart styles and formats (ex. Grouped by tables or alphabetically) in light of Covid and higher likelihood of people not being able to come last minute and maybe needing to shuffle some people around. Especially for outdoor weddings where escort cards are likely to fly away. If you are worried about your escort cards flying away, talk with your wedding planner to come up with solutions. If you have a seating chart listed alphabetically by last name, it is easier to change. When it's put by table, it is much harder to change last minute. Michelle loves first name, last initial, then table number. If you have to have it by table, you should have a smaller guest count. From Jessica: Recommendations on what information to actually include on the invites/inserts? - Insertshouldalwaysincludeyourwebsite! From Natasha: What's the etiquette for sending out 2 different invitations? One set for the bride's family and a different one for the groom's side. I feel like certain family members need to be told specific things and others do not. You are hosting a wedding for these guests. You don't have to explain things in different terminology for different guests. If you have to, you can make it a text. - Make it super clear on your website. From Nika: Any advice on mailing invites abroad? My save the dates took 6 weeks to get to parts of Europe. If you have a beautiful suite you want to stay pretty and get there in a reasonable time, put it in a flat mailer and mail it with more postage as a parcel. - SenditUSPS. From Manda: Do I have to include physical rsvps or can I just have people go online? I don't want to be tacky- but also think this could save a good bit of money. The trend is that about 50% of couples are doing online RSVP snow. There is really no wrong answer. From Cassy: If its OK to add a leaflet about a welcome party in the invitation suite, why is it bad form to add the reception invitation to the suite? Why do people recommend mailing them separately? Reception insert should be a separatecard, but not a different envelope! It turns out that rituals are a big part of how we make meaning from our life experiences. And what human experience is more intense than losing a loved one? Claire White is a cognitive scientist who studies the psychological mechanisms that undergird human behavior, especially those we might label "religious." This is a fascinating conversation about the rituals we pursue when we lose a loved one, and the cross-cultural similarities/differences across cultures. Here is a link to download Claire White's presentation deck (warning: contains images of dead bodies).

Episode 133 White Ink Calligraphy *Special Announcement! We're heading to Boston for March 29-31, 2019. We are hosting a meet up on Saturday, March 30! Email us if you can make it and we'll give you details. Claire White is a Nashville based owner of White Ink Calligraphy. It started as a side hustle but has since grown to her 2nd full time job. (That's right, she works full time as an attorney.) She has been practicing pointed pen calligraphy for over 4 years now and has been working under her brand name for 2 years. Her work is gorgeous, y'all. Check out her website and insta - links below, of course. You can see the different styles that Claire specializes in and how calligraphy can be used for so much more than just addressing invitations. Although that is a very nice touch on those invitations! It's traditional and beautiful and stylish and elevates all signage and paper products. We love it. And we're pretty fond of Claire too. Click HERE to become a premium subscriber and unlock all of the amazingness: Ad-free, full length episodes The TBWPP Wedding Planning Resource Center with Access to 6 mini courses of The Big Wedding Planning Master Class Wedding Planning Templates and Tools Big Takeaways Most of what Claire does is signage for weddings and invitations and the other part of her work is special custom projects for clients. Like welcome signs for wreaths and family names for large blank walls and song lyrics for a child's nursery. Fun stuff! The sky is the limit! Claire has a few distinct styles, a modern lettering style with some block letters mixed in (you've definitely seen this style all over instagram at weddings lately - like the last 5 years. Think wood plank welcome sign.). A copper-plate style (traditional cursive - more formal, old world style). And Claire's signature style is sort of a combination of the two. A lot of times, the rental is necessary too for signage. Claire also has an inventory of stuff like this...wood planks, mirrors, frames, etc...for her to write on. Calligraphy and rentals together! Claire asks for the seating chart list the Wednesday before the wedding. Because changes happen! That's why she only does seating charts for local clients. $2.50/envelope for front addressing. That gives you an idea of pricing...the more she writes, the more you pay. For a large sign that Claire has to do on-site, it's approx $150/hour. It's surprising to hear how affordable to large format pieces are. Maybe something you see on Pinterest is actually attainable! In this Movie-Go-Round Around the World, Brett chose an Indian comedy with a character enamored with the US. Unfortunately, his favorite country has exported its recession around the globe, and even his kidnapping gang is feeling the effects. When the gang seizes a wealthy Indian-born American, they think their luck has changed, but he's just as poorly off. However, their captive has a clever plan to get himself freed and all of them paid in the bargain. David, Nicole, and Brett talked over this comedy of errors/political critique and are joined by Claire White and Kyle Willoughby of the Dragons, Sexy Robots, and Adventures podcast! The "I find myself embracing Hollywood manipulation so readily these days" edition. Before we dive into the murky riches of 2019's summer slate, the Cultural Capital team, with some help from the MIFF Critics Campus, count down their favourite films of 2018. While in other parts of the world, this is a pretty straightforward affair, due to the vagaries of international releasing strategies, Australian cinephiles blend 2017 awards contenders - released here in January and February, 2018 - with those crammed into the last days of the year. And, much like an extremely well-made summer trifle, it's a delicious mess of vicious contrasts and complimentary additions. 00:45 Bodied 05:24 BPM 09:41 Black Mirror: Bandersnatch 13:14 Burning 17:35 Claire White on Columbus and Skate Kitchen 19:44 Zama 22:33 James Waters on Zama 24:04 Black Panther 26:45 BPM 29:52 Private Life 34:40 The Favourite 38:12 Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse 42:02 Cold War 48:44 Roma 54:47 Eliza Jansson on The Rider 56:48 Ivana Brehas on Burning and Let the Corpses Tan 58:08 Cultural Capital Film Diary 1:02:20 Anders' number 1 1:08:00 Eloise's number 1 1:13:08 Andy's number 1 1:15:27 Films that nearly made our lists Find us: Twitter: TheCultCapPod Facebook: Cultural Capital Podcast Instagram: CulturalCapitalPodcast
For today’s episode, I chatted with Claire White, founder and owner of White Ink Calligraphy. White Ink Calligraphy provides custom calligraphy for events, weddings, and personal projects. Claire built White Ink Calligraphy from the ground up, starting on social media (one of the many topics we dug into). She also teaches calligraphy classes and oh yeah, she has a full-time gig as a lawyer (#sidehustlegoals). As a relatively new business owner, Claire shared how she built her business around a creative passion while balancing a full-time gig as well as how she uses social media to connect with her clients and grow her business. We dug into some big topics, too - privilege, capitalism, the patriarchy - but it was Claire’s perspective on #girlboss that was eye-opening for me so be sure to listen for that. Lots of meaty stuff in this episode and I really appreciated Claire’s fresh perspective vs my more veteran take on things. See Complete Show Notes HERE.

Business Unveiled: Expert Tips and Secrets from Top Creative Industry Professionals
Claire White – Flourishing with White Ink Calligraphy In this episode, Angela and Claire discuss: How Claire began her Calligraphy business and how she got started in the industry. How Claire balances her intellectual side and creative side with the type of work she’s doing as a lawyer and as a calligrapher. What an invitation suite means and what the different options look like (i.e. outer envelopes, inner envelopes, spot calligraphy, etc.) Challenges that Claire faces in the industry and her business and what she has learned from those experiences. Tips, tricks, and things to know when working with a calligrapher. Key Takeaways: Calligraphy is an art. Every calligrapher’s hand is different. They may be able to do something similar, but it will never be identical to someone else’s. It doesn’t have to be expensive to get gorgeous calligraphy. There are ways to save costs, but still get the glamour that you want from your wedding. The first wedding anniversary is paper, you can do creative things with calligraphy as an option (i.e. having your wedding vows written out and framed). Don’t get overwhelmed with social media. Pick one platform, post regularly, and it does work. Human reincarnation: Same person, different body, another life. While conceptual scaffolding surrounding the idea of reincarnation can vary widely from culture to culture, in this podcast Claire White draws on some of her recent research pointing out that many similarities exist in how individuals reason about and discern the pre-rebirth identities of the reincarnated.
On the December 24, 2015 edition of Tell Somebody we heard a report from Kansas Citians Alice Kitchen and Carol Coburn on the recent delegation to El Salvador marking the 35th anniversary of the murder of four church women there in 1980. One of the delegation participants was Claire White, daughter of Robert White, US ambassador to El Salvador 1980-1981, who was fired after refusing to cover up the guilt of the US-supported Salvadoran military in the murders.
