October 10th, 2023 This week Rob is joined by SG Long's Bob Seidenschwarz and special guest former US Ambassador to South Korea Kathleen Stephens. Kathleen served from 2008-2012 in that position before becoming the US charge d'affaires to India in 2014. The group discusses many topics ranging from US-S. Korean relationship since Treaty of 1953, geopolitical tensions with China, and N. Korea. Plus much more. Korea Economic Institute of America - https://keia.org/
Event Description: Economic ties run deep between the United States, South Korea and Vietnam. The United States and South Korea are the second and third largest trading partners for Vietnam. South Korea is regularly among the largest investors in the Vietnamese economy. In recent years, security ties have also been deepening between the three countries, especially in the areas of coast guard assistance and intelligence sharing. KEI hosted a conversation between Ambassador Marc Knapper and Ambassador (ret.) Kathleen Stephens on potential new and expanded areas of trilateral cooperation between the United States, South Korea, and Vietnam.
Mark Carruthers is joined by Bronagh Hinds, one of the founding members of the Women's Coalition, Dawn Purvis, a former MLA and leader of the Progressive Unionist Party, Kathleen Stephens, the former US Consul General in Belfast and Liz O'Donnell, a former Progressive Democrat TD and Minister of State in the Department of Foreign Affairs plus of course Mark Simpson who was the BBC Political Correspondent covering the negotiations.
Kathleen Stephens, former ambassador to Korea, shares her perspective on how the culture of the US Foreign Service has changed, as have the cultures of Korea and the United States concurrently. From cultures that favored workaholism to ones with greater gender equity, younger people have pushed for greater balance of priorities, in favor of the long view of what a life should be.
