Last minute hitch in Gaza ceasefire deal

Vote by Israeli cabinet on Gaza ceasefire delayed, as Israel continues to carry out strikes; S Korea's arrested president refuses to take part in more questioning, and Pakistan's national airline accused of bad taste.

Daily News Brief by TRT World

Latest Israeli strikes kill at least 12 Palestinians across Gaza "At least 12 Palestinians were killed, and several others wounded, in Israel's latest air strikes on Gaza. A medical source reported that three were killed when a drone targeted a motorcycle near Rafah in southern Gaza. Four more lives were lost in an air strike on the Asdaa police station in Khan Younis, the source added. In Abasan Al-Kabira, east of Khan Younis, two Palestinians were killed, and others injured when civilians were hit by another air strike. Meanwhile, Al Awda Hospital confirmed that a strike on a house in Nuseirat camp, central Gaza, claimed two more lives. In Gaza City's Shujaiya neighbourhood, one Palestinian was killed, and several others were injured in an attack on a civilian gathering. " S Korea anti-corruption agency asks police to execute Yoon's arrest warrant "South Korea's anti-corruption agency has asked the police to take over enforcing the arrest warrant for impeached President Yoon Suk-yeol. This comes after a standoff with Yoon's presidential security service prevented his detention last week. Officials confirmed the discussions last week, just hours before the one-week warrant for Yoon's detention was set to expire. The Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials is likely to seek a new warrant to extend the detention window, police said, adding that they are currently reviewing the agency's request. " Winter storm won't delay Trump election certification process — Johnson "House Speaker Mike Johnson says the massive winter storm sweeping across the US won't stop Congress from certifying Donald Trump's presidential election win on Monday. Under the Electoral Count Act, the task must be completed at 1 p.m. on January 6, regardless of conditions, Johnson told Fox News. He added that he has encouraged lawmakers to remain in Washington to ensure full attendance despite the storm. " Trudeau to announce resignation as early as Monday — Canadian media "Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is reportedly preparing to announce his resignation as Liberal Party leader as early as Monday, according to The Globe and Mail. Three sources told the outlet they expect the announcement before a key national caucus meeting on Wednesday. However, it's unclear if Trudeau plans to step down immediately or stay on as prime minister until a new leader is selected. " Musk does a U-turn on support for UK's anti-immigration party leader "Elon Musk seems to have reversed his stance on Nigel Farage, leader of the anti-immigration Reform UK party, after a public disagreement with the former Brexit figurehead. On Sunday, Musk posted on X that the Reform Party needs a new leader because Farage lacks what it takes. Farage had recently claimed he was in talks with Musk about a significant donation to his party, which had split the right-wing vote and helped Labour win July's general election. But things soured after Musk voiced support for jailed British extremist agitator Tommy Robinson, a move Farage publicly criticised."

So on the topic of the overthrow of Syrian leader Assad, we will begin with reviews from Monday. There was a mixture of celebration from some countries and anger from others. There are 6 million Syrian asylum seekers and refugees worldwide, well over a million in Europe- several countries immediately halted asylum hearings and prepared to send them back. Other press reviews covered Assad receiving asylum in Russia and Israel launching airstrikes and ground incursions in Syria. The Canadian press responded to Trump joking about Trudeau and proposing a 25% tariff on imports from there. Then some press reviews about the South Korean President Yoon, who was nearly impeached for instituting martial law and proposing aggressive military actions into North Korea. Then a report on Israel military airstrikes and ground maneuvers in Syria and the Golan Heights. From GERMANY- Mohammed al-Bashir, former leader of al-Qaeda in Syria and religious governor of Idlib province, has become the interim Prime Minister of Syria- journalist Matthias Ebam gives some background on the man and what some Syrians fear may be a move to Muslim fundamentalism. Then a report on Israeli airstrikes and IDF movements in Syria. From CUBA- Iran accuses the US of playing a key role in the overthrow in Syria. Israeli troops have occupied several villages south of Damascus. Netanyahu says he will not stop the war in Palestine despite ceasefire talks. From JAPAN- The Japanese group of atomic bomb survivors went to Oslo to receive their Nobel Peace Prize. With 20 years under its belt, the Grosses Gewachs (“GG”) system has elevated the status of dry German wines in a short time. Theresa Olkus, Managing Director, and Steffen Christmann, President, discuss the history, goals, and role of the VDP and how the GG classification is bringing quality back to dry German wine. Detailed Show Notes: Verband Deutscher Prädikats- und Qualitätsweingüter (“VDP”)“P” standards for quality, those looking to produce top wines from top vineyardsThe goal is to bring the global recognition of German wines back to when the wines were considered some of the best in the world201 members (2023), up from 160 members (1990)10 regional associationsVDP historyStarted end of 19th centuryA movement to counter the industrial winemaking trendCreated quality requirements (e.g. - estate bottling, wine was sold in auction by the barrel and bottled elsewhere; no additions except sulfur, sugar was added before)Post WWI/WWII - cheap, sweet wines became popularGerman Wine Law of 1971 - created quality classification based on must weights, varietal agnostic, leading to consumer confusionThe late 70s/early 80s - German wine quality sank (yields too high), and the law created consumer label confusion, leading to VDP revamp, focus on vineyard sitesJoining the VDP1990-2023 - 130 new members, 1-2 new members/yearMust fulfill criteria, blind tasting, vineyard, and cellar inspectionYou can't apply or buy a membership; a region must invite a wineryBenefits for VDP membersKnowledge sharing Leveraging the VDP brand (eagle logo) - an international sign of qualityVDP events and marketingExporting expertise - 27% of VDP wines exportedLeaving the VDP1-2 members/year leaveMost coached to leaveMostly leave post generational change - don't want to follow VDP rules, quality not at the top levelDry German winesTraditional style before 1900Germans drink as much dry as anywhere else in the world, and the reputation for sweet wines is an international perspectiveHistorically - 2-3% potential abv difference between entry-level and best wines. Lots of large international schools are seeking ways to make learning experiences more relevant, interdisciplinary and project/problem-based.  Yet between fixed timetables, a demanding curriculum, large student bodies, and siloed subjects, they are finding it difficult to do more than offer a few lessons per week.  What if there was a way to make experiences like these the main course?  In this podcast, I sit down with Amber Kotcher and Jeff Harwood, coordinators of the PRAXIS program, a small micro-learning commmunity in the International School of Kuala Lumpur that does just that. Daily News Brief by TRT World

*) US-Afghan talks on release of frozen assets to continue US President Joe Biden's administration will press ahead with talks on releasing billions of dollars in Afghanistan's foreign-held assets. This is despite the late Al Qaeda leader's presence in Kabul, and Washington's frustration with the pace, according to sources with knowledge of the situation, Reuters news agency has reported. The decision to pursue the initiative to help stabilise Afghanistan's collapsed economy underscores growing concern over a humanitarian crisis as the United Nations warns that nearly half the country's 40 million people face "acute hunger" as winter approaches. *) Russia's Ukraine soldiers trial to undermine talks Russia might take the provocative step of putting Ukrainian soldiers on trial as Kiev marks 31 years of independence on Wednesday, Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has warned. Zelenskyy warned: "If this despicable court takes place, if our people are brought into these settings in violation of all agreements, all international rules, there will be abuse." Ukraine's Independence Day on August 24 will also mark six months since Russia attacked the former Soviet republic, in a devastating war that has cost thousands of lives. *) Police file terrorism charges against Pakistan's Imran Khan In Pakistan, police have filed terrorism charges against former prime minister Imran Khan, escalating political tensions in the country. Pakistan's media watchdog has banned the live telecast of Khan's speeches, after he was accused of threatening top police officials and a female judge during a rally in Islamabad. Following that rally, Islamabad police registered a criminal complaint against Khan under the country's anti-terrorism act. *) US, S Korea begin biggest military drills since 2018 amid N Korea backlash The United States and South Korea have begun their biggest combined military drills since 2018 – a move likely to enrage North Korea, which has been ramping up its nuclear threats. The two countries have long carried out joint exercises, which they insist are purely defensive but North Korea sees them as a rehearsal for invasion. The annual joint military drills mark the resumption of large-scale training sessions after they were scaled back due to Covid-19 and a bout of failed diplomacy with Pyongyang. *) Computer-animated movie 'Dragon Ball' slays at box office in North America Computer-animated martial arts film "Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero," the 21st in the Japanese franchise, has seized control of the North American box office. With an impressive $20.1 million in ticket sales, it was hailed as the best global opening ever for an anime movie by distributor Crunchyroll. The film outshined the $11.6 million take of another new release, Universal's "Beast".
