Reed Diamond and Chuck Shute delve into the timeless appeal of Pixar movies, emphasizing the importance of a strong script. Reed shares his experiences working on "Drop," a thriller filmed in Ireland, highlighting the practical sets and collaborative environment. They also touch on the impact of tax incentives on film production, the evolution of live music experiences, and the importance of storytelling in acting, with anecdotes about working with notable actors and directors. Reed Diamond discusses his acting philosophy, emphasizing the importance of being in the moment and collaborating with fellow actors. He contrasts this with the competitive, cutthroat environment of "Homicide," where actors actively tried to undermine each other. Diamond admires strategic actors like Val Kilmer but prefers a more spontaneous, improvisational approach. He also reflects on the impact of social media and politics on society, advocating for authenticity, empathy, and local action. Diamond promotes his upcoming film "Drop," highlighting its intense, well-crafted narrative and the collaborative effort behind it.0:00:00 - Intro0:00:20 - Rankin/Bass, Claymation & Kids Movies 0:04:45 - Movies from 70s/80s, Anora & Test of Time 0:11:25 - New "Drop" Film, Script, Production, Casting & Location 0:22:10 - Cheaper to Film Outside of Los Angeles 0:25:22 - Statue of Liberty & New York Scene 0:30:45 - Music Scenes, Concerts & Punk Rock 0:38:28 - Working with Other Actors & Being Authentic 0:44:40 - Working on Homicide & Crazy Stories 0:51:03 - Smart Tricks, Being Difficult & Bad Behavior 0:55:40 - Val Kilmer & Cunning Strategy of Actors/Actresses 1:04:03 - Improvising Vs. In this week's episode, Dr. Marc Gopin explores the concept of Deepening Democracy and how it is essential in our polarized United States. Deepening democracy and the celebration of democracy are critical to the way we need to think on a day-to-day basis. We need to celebrate the ideas of democracy. We need holidays not about presidents, not about heroes, and not about extraordinary figures. Instead, we need to celebrate freedom or the Bill of Rights. We need to celebrate the idea of people having to work together for compromise and sharing of power. There is a way for us to be kinder, smarter, and more cooperative in the United States. But it takes education, it takes making our best democratic ideas into a focal point of 1) our intellectual, cognitive, and emotional development, and 2) our social lives together as a nation of shared rituals, habits and celebrations.Follow us on Facebook: fb.me/MakingChangePodcastFor questions and comments, please reach out at makingchange.crdc@gmail.com

Dr Erec Smith is an Associate Professor of Rhetoric at York College of Pennsylvania. Although he has eclectic scholarly interests, Dr Smith's primary focus is on the rhetorics of anti-racist activism, theory, and pedagogy. He is a co-founder of Free Black Thought, a website dedicated to highlighting viewpoint diversity within the black intelligentsia. Dr Smith is a Writing Fellow for Heterodox Academy, a Senior Fellow for the Foundation Against Intolerance and Racism and an advisor for Counterweight, an organization that advocates for classical liberal concepts of social justice. When I recently came across the headline “The World's Most Influential Values, In One Graphic,” I couldn't help but click–a good data visualization is like catnip for me. The chart, compiled by global research company Valuegraphics, shows the results of 500,000 surveys, across 152 languages, about what people think are common values. A few of the answers on the list: freedom of speech, leisure, financial security. I was disappointed. Not because any of those things are bad, but because they aren't actually values. For the survey, the authors defined values as “what we care about,” which is the definition that a lot of people probably have. The thing is, what we care about changes every day–every minute, even–and that's why it's hard to agree on common values. When your kid is throwing a tantrum, you care about getting some peace and quiet. When you're stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic with an empty fuel tank, you care about whether there's a gas station nearby. But these things are not your values. Recorded live: 5 March 2020 Welcome to the third webinar in the monthly Dialogue & Debate series from Cumberland Lodge. We will be exploring some of the most significant recent developments in the way we live and organise our societies, in the UK and around the world, and discussing lessons we can learn in terms of finding common values, both now and in the future. This month's webinar will feature the cross-bench peer and Anglican priest, Lord Green (former UK Trade & Investment Minister, former Group Chair of HSBC, and author of books including The Human Odyssey: East, West and the Search for Universal Values) and the economist and broadcaster Professor Linda Yueh (Fellow in Economics at the University of Oxford, Adjunct Professor Economics at London Business School, a former Chief Business Correspondent at the BBC, and author of books including The Great Economists: How Their Ideas Can Help Us Today).
“Critical Race Theory” is all the rage these days. Between February and June of 2021, Fox News used the term nearly 1300 times. In the past two months, more than 20 bills have been proposed intending to ban Critical Race Theory from K-12 classrooms, while countless op-ed's have been published taking positions on all sides of the issue. And yet, it still is a term with a slippery definition that very few people, regardless of position, agree upon. Today's blog, Critical Theory or Common Humanity? The Case for a Liberal Approach to Social Studies Education co-authored by Sam Merrick, a social studies teacher, and Samantha Hedges, a scholar of the politics of education, discusses the role and meaning of Critical Theory in the K-12 classroom, as well as its relationship to viewpoint diversity. The episode includes an exclusive interview with co-author, Samantha Hedges. Six years ago, in the fall of 2015, a wave of campus protests spread across the United States. From Yale to Claremont McKenna College to UC Berkeley, students demanded changes related to social justice and gave long lists of demands to their university presidents, often including demands that specific faculty members be fired for perceived verbal offenses. Today's blog, “True Diversity Requires Generosity of Spirit” written by Jonathan Haidt in November 2015 is a call for patience, generosity, and a dash of humility, especially towards those we think to be doing us wrong. This piece has withstood the test of time, offering ancient wisdom to help deal with modern problems. Haidt is a Professor of Ethical Leadership at New York University's Stern School of Business. He is also Heterodox Academy's co-founder and Board Chair. Values You Should Instill in Your Child Before Age 10
Political polarization has become a defining feature of modern American life. Research surrounding the 2020 election from Pew Research Center demonstrated that - a month before the election, roughly eight-in-ten registered voters in both [left and right] camps said their differences with the other side were about core American values, and roughly nine-in-ten worried that a victory by their opponents would lead to ‘lasting harm' to the United States. In this episode of Heterodox Out Loud, we meet Erec Smith, Associate Professor of Rhetoric at York College of Pennsylvania, who is trying to heal America's deep divisions through, well of course, Rhetoric and the understanding of Discourse. His piece is called, “A Rhetoric of Common Values.” To engage deeper with Smith's ideas, check out our related posts “Don't Dismiss Debate” by Meg Mott, “Reducing Political Polarization Through Campus Dialogues,” by Matt Burgess and Jeremiah Osborne-Gowey, and “Both Sides Now: From Debate to Dialogue” by Deb Mashek and Judith Shapiro. Shared values like the rule of law and respect for freedom, democracy, and equality have to be the foundation of a strong European Public Sphere. In this episode, Susanne Zels makes a case for the role civic education should play in strengthening European democracy and deepening the values shared by Europeans. Together with Jana Puglierin, we try to answer how the pandemic has affected European solidarity and the European's connection with their value system.

In TalkingJapan#6 Marcin Socha discusses first steps in foreign policy made by the new Japanese prime minister Suga Yoshihide. Suga who is a former Chief Cabinet Secretary announced he will be following policy directions introduced by former PM Abe, but doesn’t have much experience in foreign policy. In October Suga made his international debut at the QUAD summit in Tokyo which was followed by a visit in South-East Asia. New Japanese administration used both events to promote the Initiative of Free and Open Indo-Pacific, which has a clear anti-Chinese edge. The podcast tries to answer the question on the future of Japan’s policy towards China.

Welcome to the third webinar in the monthly Dialogue & Debate series from Cumberland Lodge. Key themes In Lord Green's The Human Odyssey (2019), he talks about how 'the long human odyssey of self-discovery has reached a crucial stage', where 'everything we do affects everyone and everything else - and we know it'. This will form the basis for our discussion, from both a geopolitical and socio-economic perspective. This webinar will be broadcast live from Cumberland Lodge at 11am on 5 March 2020. It will be presented by our Chief Executive, Edmund Newell. #DialogueDebate

We are back! After an extended spring break, the Out of Order crew is back in the studio to bring you informative and relevant speakers and ideas, exploring how the world was, is and will be ordered. In this episode, we discuss whether the West is a club built on common values or shared interests. Specifically, we look at the case of NATO and Turkey and consider both how democratic backsliding affects and should affect their relationship. NATO’s founding treaty refers includes a statement of common values in its preamble, mentioning the “freedom, common heritage, and civilization of their peoples” and that it is “founded on the principles of democracy, individual liberty, and rule of law.” But how important have these common principles really been for NATO? Is it really a democratic, liberal organization, or is it simply a security alliance against the (then) Soviet Union and today Russia? We discuss the current political situation in Turkey, the prospects for reform and NATO’s proper role in pushing against anti-democratic developments. We also discuss the nature of NATO as an alliance and its history of accepting less-than-democratic members. Co-host Rachel Tausendfreund was joined for the episode by Özgür Unluhisarcikli, Director of GMF’s Ankara office and Jan Techau, the Director of GMF’s Europe program out of the Berlin office. The Key to Authentic Selling with Jeff Davis #207 In this episode we meet long time Sales Babble listener Jeff Davis and author of the new book The Power of Authentic Leadership. Jeff and I discuss the importance of sellers embracing a leadership role, and apply their personal value system to build trust in prospective clients. Jeff gives the key to authentic selling with a 3 step process for authentic leadership. Sales Credibility Every day sales professionals put themselves and their products and services into the world. Success is dependent on effectively connecting with prospects. To do that you must have absolute buy-in to what you’re selling. People sabotage themselves by not fulling committing to the product/service. Customers can read that and not trust. Three Step Authentic Selling Process The key to authentic selling is knowing yourself, your product and aligning the two when selling: Know your personal VALUES – it’s not what you know, it’s what you apply Make sure your VALUES are applied to what your SELLING (solving a need, providing a genuine solution). Make sure the two values align. This builds trust. Example: Let’s say you have a personal value of “integrity”. When you’re qualifying clients and identifying needs, leverage that value. With integrity, you will naturally focus on benefits (that add value to the prospect) vs features that tend to cater to the sellers ego. Place the customer first and tip the odds to your favor. Common Values of Leaders Leaders commonly exhibit the following characteristics: Integrity No hidden agenda (higher than making money) Serving Others Having the best interest of others Have a personal vision for them in the world, apply their values within that vision Take Initiative ( fully take responsible) Serve and protect their employees ( fire bad clients who abuse their company/staff) The key to authentic selling is to take the leadership role and serve your customers. Take Action Plan Get out and meet prospects and clients face to face. Don’t over rely on marketing, email, social media and phone calls. We sat down with author Ken Bedell on October 11th to talk about his new book Realizing the Civil Rights Dream: Diagnosing and Treating American Racism. Book Synopsis: This book explains why America can realize the civil rights dream in the 21st century—if U.S. citizens take actions as individuals as well as work together for equality. It has been more than 53 years since Martin Luther King Jr. made his “I Have a Dream” speech. Why has the United States still not been able to make King’s dream a reality after a half a century of effort and progress? Is there still hope of full participation for all in America? In Realizing the Civil Rights Dream: Diagnosing and Treating American Racism, author Kenneth B. Bedell proposes a civil rights dream that grows out of American history and speaks to the 21st-century reality. He makes the case that by adopting a larger perspective of the role of racism in preserving U.S. social, cultural, economic, and political institutions and practices, Americans can understand why it has been so difficult to fulfill the promises of the 1960s civil rights dream. Bedell describes and applies sociological theories that serve to explain why racism is still prevalent in the United States and identifies the steps that are necessary to overcome racism. The book concludes with proposals for ways to apply social science to realize the civil rights dream and examples of how individuals can take action to make a difference. Features: Asks—and answers—the troubling question: Why have the civil rights hopes of the 1960s not yet been realized? Demonstrates the relationship between what happens in everyday life and racism’s persistence Provides insightful historical context for racism as it exists in the 21st century Presents a framework for understanding how social forces preserve racism Offers a refreshingly optimistic perspective that racism can be overcome Available for purchase on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Realizing-Civil-Rights-Dream-Diagnosing/dp/1440853754 Ken Bedell, author of Realizing the Civil Rights Dream: Diagnosing and Treating American Racism earned his doctorate in sociology from Temple University and has graduate degrees in education (New York University), theology ( the University of South Africa and Colgate Rochester/Crozer Divinity School), and in chemistry (Cornell University). Bedell is ordained in the United Methodist Church where he has served local congregation for 18 years in New York, Maryland, and Ohio. His work in the church included teaching sociology and communications at United Theological Seminary (Dayton), heading up higher education work as Associate General Secretary of the Board of Higher Education and Ministry, holding leadership positions in the Methodist Federation for Social Action and the Reconciling Ministries Network, and serving on the Board of Trustees of Rust College, a HBCU in Mississippi. As the Executive Secretary for the International Association of Methodist Schools, Colleges and Universities, Ken traveled extensively visiting educational institutions in Brazil, Argentina, Korea, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Mozambique, and Austria. Most recently he served in the Obama administration as a Senior Advisor in the Department of Education. There he worked in the Center for Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships and directed the President’s Interfaith and Community Service Campus Challenge. Bedell published widely on topics as varied as the history of worship, the sociology of technology, computer technology in education, and race relations. The World Association for Christian Communication published his book, Different Ships, Same Boat, as part of a series on “In Search of Common Values.”

*Get ready for a fast-moving show that will offer you a brand-new perspective on dating, self-worth, and self-love. In this episode, Jonathon Aslay reveals why dating itself can trigger our deepest fears, shares the 4 Pillars of A Successful Relationship, and breaks down the ways in which we can transcend the flawed modern dating scene to have deeper, more meaningful, more successful dates and long-term romantic partnerships. And it starts with the common denominator in all of your failed relationships: you!* That’s right, dating success starts with cultivating self-love and healing childhood trauma. Jonathon is the author of What The Heck Is Self-Love Anyway ( https://www.amazon.com/What-Self-Love-Anyway-Jonathon-Aslay/dp/1092498397/ref=sr_1_3?crid=1E7HCX8U07TOB&keywords=what+the+heck+is+self+love+anyway&qid=1567012328&s=gateway&sprefix=what+the+heck+is+self+love%2Caps%2C202&sr=8-3 ) , a book about healing from grief and childhood trauma to cultivate self-love. Jonathon leverages his message to the unique challenges of the modern dating scene. He is a dating coach specializing in mid-life and purposeful dating ― helping clients transcend the usual obsession with chemistry to become more self-aware and understand what Jonathon calls the 4 Pillars of successful relationships: *Chemistry, Common Values, Blendable Lifestyles, and Emotional Maturity*. Jonathon is the real deal, having overcome an assortment of personal setbacks to rebuild his life and gift his message to others. After losing his 19-year-old son Connor in 2018, Jonathon was forced to acknowledge what he’s suspected all along: that dating strategies are often too one-dimensional to have a meaningful impact. Instead, *it’s the act of dating itself that brings out what he feels is the number one emotional health issue facing singles today: a soul-deep lack of self-worth and self-love.* Today, Jonathon is on a mission to encourage both men and women to adopt a daily practice of self-help, personal development, and spirituality, so that they may find true inner happiness, purpose, and peace. With these practices, individuals will attract the relationship of their dreams — and Jonathon is here to help along the way. Enjoy listening to this fun, informative (and quite useful!) show with Jonathon, and if you want to connect with him or learn more about his work, check out his website here ( https://www.jonathonaslay.com/ ). *TIMESTAMPS:* Jonathan Aslay is a dating coach and expert specializing in midlife and purposeful dating. [01:38] Jonathan’s four pillars for successful dating are chemistry, shared values, a blendable lifestyle, and emotional maturity. [03:00] In the dating realm, old memories of “I’m not good enough” or “I’m not lovable” come up. [05:15] After using the dating profile system, Jonathan realized that he was good at interpreting both men’s and women’s profiles and that’s how his business came about. [07:35] The greater issue in dating is not just biology and attraction, it is more a healing of our childhood wounds and traumas. [08:44] Emotional maturity is one of the key pillars of a relationship. If people don’t take responsibility for their choices, they are not emotionally mature. [11:12] The physical connection is nice but to sustain a long-term relationship, you need blendable lifestyles. [16:33] Romance should be reserved for relationships and not just for dating. [18:13] More women than men ask for help from this dating coach. [21:22] In modern times, the way people meet and get together is so different from the past. [23:15] It took Jonathan over 100 failed dates to realize the common denominator in them all was Jonathan himself. [27:23] Self-love means self-worth, self-confidence, self-esteem, self-reliance, self-respect. [23:45] Can we assume that most everyone has some wounds from their childhood upbringing and are lingering? [30:54] We can either look inward or look to blame the outside world. [31:58] Sadly, people are dating myopically….just thinking about what am I getting here? rather than respecting the other’s feelings. [41:18] Ask value-based questions on that first date. [46:38] It is important to be honest and straightforward in communicating how you see the relationship. Are you looking for a partner? Are you just having fun? Benefits? [52:40] It’s not necessarily rejection. It is a misalignment. It is an awareness. [54:09] Biology makes up a small percentage of the other person’s personality. [56:15] Meeting up with a stranger is a challenge, these days.
