Send us a text message and tell us your thoughts.Journey through Black history and Caribbean connections, revealing the incredible legacy of Black missionaries in the British and Dutch Guianas. Dr. Briana Royster joins us to discuss how the African Methodist Episcopal Church and the National Baptist Convention played pivotal roles in connecting African American and Afro-Guyanese communities during the 19th and 20th centuries, connecting diasporic communities across the Atlantic and illuminating the intertwined stories of migration, race, and empowerment that span the Caribbean and the Americas. This episode sheds light on the shared struggles and cultural nuances, Black internationalism through religion, and how even Garveyism found contrasting receptions across lines of faith..Turning our focus to the influential role of Afro-Guyanese women, we highlight the contributions of figures like Mrs. Dorothy Morris and Mrs. Constance Luckie. These trailblazers leveraged mutual aid networks and navigated church bureaucracy to secure vital community resources. We discuss the importance of oral history and personal archives and the often-overlooked influence of religion on global Black solidarity and social justice. Join us as we celebrate these unsung heroes and reflect on the enduring power of faith to unite and uplift Black communities worldwide.Briana Adline Royster is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Gender and Race Studies at The University of Alabama. She received her PhD in History from New York University with concentrations in African Diaspora history and Latin American and Caribbean history. Boston Common has the distinction of being the first Public Park in America after Puritan colonists bought the land in 1634. Though it's beautiful today, this park has a deeply dark history. It quickly became the grounds for Puritan punishments (think: whipping posts, stocks, and executions). Grab a warm cup as we explore the lives of women who were put to death here and whether or not they still haunt the grounds today.Tea of the Day: DM & Co. Much like our podcast about Robert Forster, today's discussion of the great Roy Scheider eschews the obvious titles. If you're expecting lots of jawing about Jaws, you're plum out of luck. But did you think we WEREN'T going to talk about Red Serpent? This is the Comeuppance Reviews Podcast, after all. So always remember that the world is your Royster as you press play today!
Tonight, Beyoncé will drop her eighth studio album, Cowboy Carter, her first explicit full-length foray into country music. As with every Bey project, there's a ton of meaning and history to unpack. DePaul University professor and author of Black Country Music: Listening for Revolutions, Dr. Francesca Royster, and writer and editor Taylor Crumpton, author of TIME piece Beyoncé Has Always Been Country, join the show to explain the long and often under-sung history of Black women in country: from the birth of many of the genre's core aesthetics and tenants during slavery, to 20th century recording artists who have attempted to break Nashville's white and male mass co-option of the genre, to recent breakthroughs from stars like Mickey Guyton. Dr. Royster, Taylor & DJ Louie attempt to position Cowboy Carter in this long and arduous lineage, unpack the details and gestures of singles "Texas Hold 'Em" and "16 Carriages", and parse how Beyoncé's country pivot is tapping into a much larger story than may appear at first blush. AABP Executive Director Dr. Fred Gingrich is joined by Dr. Felipe Peña Mosca and Dr. Sandra Godden for this episode to discuss a paper that is available in the online first edition of The Bovine Practitioner, “Methods of processing recycled manure solids bedding on Midwest dairy farms II: Relationships between bedding characteristics and bedding bacterial count.” This is a companion paper that we previously discussed on Episode 165 of Have You Herd? which evaluated recycled manure solids processing methods and its impacts on bedding bacteria counts, udder health, milk quality and milk production. The first objective of this study was to identify bedding characteristics associated with bedding bacterial count (BBC) in ready-to-use (RTU) recycled manure solids (RMS). The second objective was to explore the association between processing method and bedding characteristics in RTU solids. A third objective was to investigate factors associated with BBC in used solids (after placed in stalls). The study found that increased dry matter, decreased organic matter and processing method were all associated with reduced BBC in RTU RMS. Veterinarians should evaluate bedding as part of a total milk quality program to promote good udder health practices on their client's farms. Peña Mosca, F., Godden, S., Royster, E., Crooker, B. Give Me That D: A Disney Channel Original Movie Breakdown Podcast
Happy New Year!! GMTD is back with a truly psychotic film, “The Proud Family Movie.” Thank GOD we have Damon Royster here to help us make sense of the madness! This ain't the TV show, let's just say THAT. But if you love peanuts, boy are you in for a the ride of your life. It would be easier to say what this movie DOESN'T have, but just to whet your appetite, there's a secret formula used in a “pork-nut”, a mad scientist who's building an army of peanut people, a rapper named 15 Cent, a dance crew of 16-year-olds trying to “crunk”, CLONES, a horny Sugar Mama (which is the best part), and a gun that turns peanuts into peanut butter. This one is just cuckoo! Also, WHERE was the Destiny's Child theme song featuring Solange??? Blasphemy! Enjoyyyyyyyy

AABP Executive Director Dr. Fred Gingrich is joined by AABP President Dr. Sandra Godden. This episode of Have You Herd is sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim and their portfolio of 3600 mastitis coverage. Find out more at this link. Dr. Godden was an author on the paper published in the AABP peer-reviewed journal, The Bovine Practitioner. The journal's target audience is practicing cattle veterinarians, providing research that is clinically relevant, and is available open-access in a searchable format where you can download PDF's of articles at this link.We start our conversation by discussing recycled manure solids as a bedding for dairy cows and why producers may find this bedding choice attractive. Godden encourages veterinarians to get involved in the discussion to assist producers with their milk quality programs, including bedding choices and how to best make them work for that farm. This study investigated four different processing methods of recycled manure solids on 29 Midwest dairy farms: green, digested, mechanically drum composted and hot air drum dryers. Godden discusses the methods of this study and offered practical tips for veterinarians to submit bedding samples for quantitative cultures of pathogens of interest. The number one tip is to be consistent so you can compare your results. This study looked at the relationship between recycled manure solids processing methods and bedding bacteria counts, bulk tank bacteria counts, udder health and milk production. This study identifies some of the potential risk factors associated with the various processing methods but Godden reminds us that mastitis is a multi-factorial problem and veterinarians should be familiar with complete investigations on farms to ensure that all factors, including bedding type, are included.Links:Godden, S., Royster, E., Crooker, B., Timmerman, J., & Peña Mosca, F. It has been another weird seven days for Philadelphia 76ers Nation. The Sixers had been winners of 20 of their last 24 games, climbing the Eastern Conference, and solidifying their position as a top-four team in the East. They looked like a true force to be reckoned with, and while they still do on any given night, losses to the Orlando Magic and New York Knicks made them look tired. Thankfully, the NBA All-Star Break is approaching. Joel Embiid and James Harden were not named All-Star starters. Embiid was named as a reserve, but is it possible that our dynamic duo could use a rest. That will be discussed by Adio Royster and David Early on this episode of “Out of Site”. Speaking of dynamic duos, there is a new pair in Dallas as the Brooklyn Nets traded All-Star guard Kyrie Irving to the Dallas Mavericks for Spencer Dinwiddie, Dorian Finney-Smith and draft picks. How does this trade make the Brooklyn Nets look both now and when Kevin Durant returns from injury. The Nets are currently fourth in the Eastern Conference. While they are still formidable with Durant and a good supporting cast (cast members who will be available on most nights unlike Kyrie), how much of a threat do they pose? All that plus some bet ideas on Super Bowl 57 between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs. #GoBirds! Peace, love and Sixers! Learn more about your ad choices. One. Two. Three, four, five in a row! The Philadelphia 76ers went a perfect 5-0 on their trip out west with wins over both Los Angeles teams (Lakers, Clippers), the Sacramento Kings, Portland Trailblazers and Utah Jazz. They did this with the usual performances from Joel Embiid and James Harden, but the bench has also come through as well as Embiid and Harden both missed the game against Sacramento. Speaking of the bench, Tyrese Maxey has been coming off the bench the last few games versus being in the starting lineup. Is this the kind of rotation flexing that Doc Rivers was talking about, and what do Adio Royster and David Early think of it. After talking about the bench, your hosts give their thoughts on the Sixers win streak and then play a little “Rotation Trust Level” with a column written by Josh Grieb. After the break, there was a report that Sixers owner Josh Harris was looking to buy the Washington Commanders. How does that play into numerous reports that the Sixers are looking to avoid paying a repeater luxury tax? With the trade deadline looming, does that limit the types of deals that General Manager Daryl Morey is able to make – like a Doug McDermott trade (that Adio is going to celebrate maybe a little too hard if it comes to fruition). We winnin', baby! Peace. Love, and Sixers. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
The last three games have been a bit confusing for your Philadelphia 76ers. They started by getting beaten by 19 at the crib in South Philadelphia at the hands of the Oklahoma City Thunder. After that embarrassment, they traveled to Salt Lake City to face the Utah Jazz, where they almost lost due to Jordan Clarkson going off for 38 points. Amazingly, they won the game, so it looked good heading to California. That's when the Los Angeles Lakers (with no Anthony Davis, just LeBron James) almost won THAT game since LeBron threw down 35 points at Staples Center. These are not the performances you'd like to see from your Sixers, given that the Brooklyn Nets (sans Kevin Durant) and the Milwaukee Bucks (what's up with Giannis) are catchable in the standings. The Sixers have upcoming games against the Los Angeles Clippers (Kawhi Leonard, Paul George), Portland Trailblazers (Damian Lillard), and Sacramento Kings (De'Aaron Fox, Kevin Huerter, Malik Monk), who all have guards capable of torching this Sixers defense similar to Shai-Gilgeous Alexander and Jordan Clarkson. Adio Royster and David Early talk about the possibilities of Doc Rivers tinkering with his starting lineup (finally) and look ahead to those games along with the two big ones: at home versus the Brooklyn Nets and Denver Nuggets. After the break, Adio and Dave expand more on Doc Rivers's alleged proposals to change the starting lineup and look ahead to the NBA Trade Deadline with a name you may not have been contemplating before David's column last week. (That's the tease. To discover the name, you'll have to listen.) Peace. Love. And Go Sixers! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Francesca T. Royster's Black Country Music: Listening for Revolutions is a vital read that helps us to understand how country music got whitewashed, stripping it of its distinctly African American origins in slavery and its aftermath, and shows us how embracing that history will only enrich the form. Royster weaves Black, queer, and feminist scholarship into her analysis, but even more compellingly, she brings her own experiences as a Black, queer country fan to bear on her exploration of Black artists in country's past and present. Through engaging essays, she explores Tina Turner's country album, Darius Rucker's Black bro image, Our Native Daughters' history-steeped banjo music, and Lil' Nas X's fight to be considered country. The DePaul University English professor talks to Pop Literacy about what inspired her book, shares some of her favorite country music memories (like a set visit to Hee Haw!), and recommends some of her favorite country artists to add to your playlists. The Philadelphia 76ers opened their 2023 calendar year with a rematch with the New Orleans Pelicans at the crib in South Philadelphia. After being torched by Pelicans guard CJ McCollum in a loss in New Orleans, the Sixers did a better job of limiting his production. McCollum only scored 26 points, and the defense stepped up in a 120-111 win on Monday night. Zion Williamson had 26 points, six rebounds and seven assists before leaving in the third quarter. With Zion out, the Pelicans did not have enough firepower to keep the Sixers from getting their first home win of 2023. Joel Embiid finished with 42 points and 11 rebounds. James Harden had 27 points and 8 assists, and Georges Niang continued his blazing shooting pouring in 15 points off the bench (5/9 from three). Tyrese Maxey played his first game on the home court, and he looked to be getting back to form with his transition play and finishing ability – which is even more good news for this Sixers team. As the Sixers look forward to the next week and a half, Adio Royster and Jovan Alford of Total Sports Live (filling in for David Early) look to see how the Sixers can rack up wins prior to their west coast road trip in the middle of January followed by two pivotal games at the end of the month against the Brooklyn Nets and Denver Nuggets. In part two of the podcast, Adio and Jovan get into the New Year's spirit with some “New Year's Resolutions” that they would like to see the Sixers employ going into the next few weeks and months before the All-Star Break. Happy New Year, Sixers Nation. The year is started off right, so let's keep it tight! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
The Philadelphia 76ers are streaking! They aren't dead, yet. This team can be exciting. The Sixers defeated the Toronto Raptors 104-101 in overtime tonight in South Philadelphia to net their fifth game in a row and improve their record to 17-12. Joel Embiid had a night we've come to expect from him, but it was Tobias Harris pulling some extra duty with his continued hot shooting as he has been shooting almost 56% from three prompting him to tell folks in the post-game interview: “Watch out. I'm a sharpshooter.” Pascal Siakam held the Raptors together with all of the bubble gum and duct tape he had at his disposal, finishing with 38 (16 of which came in the third quarter). There were some questionable calls from the referees in the overtime period, but the Sixers still came out on top despite all of that. (SIDE NOTE: Thanks to Fred VanVleet for not cashing in on the litany of open looks given to him by the Sixers' defense in the fourth quarter.) The Sixers now have some things going, and that's in large part to the improved play of James Harden. IN part two of the podcast, Adio Royster and David Early go into detail about how Harden feels about his legacy after opening up to Yaron Weitzman of FOX Sports. What does Harden think about his legacy this season and in the future in the city of Philadelphia? Harden has also been able to cultivate his partnership with Embiid thanks in large part to “time,” as he referenced. The pair have looked unstoppable when they're both on the floor, healthy. This is evidenced by the 117.7 points per 100 possessions numbers so far this season. Your hosts are full of good cheer on the final Out of Site podcast before the holidays! Happy Monday, Philadelphia 76ers fans! The Sixers have won two in a row (over the Los Angeles Lakers and Charlotte Hornets, respectively), and things are looking up (?). Assume the casual optimism there, of one of your hosts. Joel Embiid has been playing magnificently over the last week, and his efforts earned him his second Eastern Conference Player of the Week award after putting up 53 against Charlotte following yet another herculean effort in overtime against the Lakers. Is all of this too much? It may sound like a broken record at this point, but what happened to the load management of the stars? Embiid and James Harden have logged heavy minutes all season. Recently, Harden's management has been frustrating after what seems like he was rushed back from a foot injury. In his first game back, he played way more minutes than he probably should have in that loss to the Houston Rockets. If the goal is getting everyone healthy come playoff time, the Sixers coaching staff is failing at that goal. That's one item discussed on today's podcast. After the break, Adio and Dave go around the league to see the shocking rise of the New Orleans Pelicans in the Western Conference – shouldered by the play of a healthy Zion Williamson. It's also the first time (and not the last) that Bol Bol will be mentioned on this podcast if he continues to play better. It's a fun podcast, Sixers fans. Adio and Dave are with you, along with Adio's nephew, “The Man Cub”, in the background. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
How? How did the Philadelphia 76ers lose to the Houston Rockets 132-123 on a night when James Harden returned to the Sixers' starting lineup after (allegedly) healing from a foot injury? How did the Sixers lose to a Houston Rockets team that (before tonight) had six wins on the season? Why did this team with Harden returning to the lineup with Joel Embiid and Tobias Harris (who quietly had another VERY GOOD game) need double overtime only to lose by nine in a game where they should have beat the brakes off a young, inexperienced team? There are no words to describe tonight's loss, but your hosts Adio Royster and David Early will attempt to rationalize it as best they can. The Rockets won this game. There are no ifs, ands or buts about it. They controlled the pace after falling behind 10-0 to start the game. The Rockets outrebounded the Sixers. They played harder than the Sixers. They had more heart than the Sixers. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Welcome back, Joel Hans Embiid! The Philadelphia 76ers defeated the Atlanta Hawks at the crib at the Wells Fargo Center in South Philadelphia by a final score of 104-101. The Sixers were given a little extra Cameroonian gas when it was announced that Embiid would be returning from injury – unexpectedly, if you ask your hosts Adio Royster and David Early. That said, Embiid led the Sixers to the win scoring 30 points and adding eight rebounds and seven assists. Tobias Harris paced the team to start and finished with 24 and ten rebounds. Shake Milton continued his hot scoring streak with 21, and as a result, the Sixers move into fifth place in the Eastern Conference, with James Harden set to return within the next week or two. The defense was equally as impressive as their offensive attack holding All-Star guard Trae Young to 18 points off 6/14 from the field and only one of four from three-point range. Now that the Sixers have hit a bit of a stride with some unexpected places, they head to Memphis and Cleveland later this week. In part two of the podcast, Adio and Dave reflect on the return of one Benjamin Simmons to the Wells Fargo Center last week and what the atmosphere seemed like as the boos and the jeers of the crowd oozed through televisions and reverberations of said boos could be felt all over the city of Philadelphia. Now that we're officially past the first visit, how could it/should it be any time Simmons comes to town? Adio and Dave discuss that and more on tonight's podcast. Learn more about your ad choices. On an all-new "Out of Sight" podcast, co-hosts Adio Royster and Dave Early get into the Sixers' so far signature win of the season over the scorching Suns. Joel Embiid looked a bit sluggish, and not quite healthy, but he still had a Michael Jordan Flu game light, dropping a cool 33 and 10 on D-Book and co. Tyrese Maxey had another off-game by his now lofty standards. It appears he misses his good friend James Harden. We chop up Paul Reed getting burn over Montrezl, Bang Bang Georges Niang, and Tobias stepping it up. Then they look ahead at the upcoming schedule and chat about the team mismanaging Harden's early season workload. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
On this episode of the Out of Sight podcast, Dave Early fills in for host Adio Royster, and Greg Dennis fills in as a guest. The guys talk about the Sixers' 120-106 win over TJ McConnell's (!) Pacers, their first win of the season. James Harden may not have his burst fully back, but he is finding ways to dominate with craft. Joel Embiid dealt with plantar, but this may have been his most spry game. They hash out the mixed-bag bench, wonder where Maxey may find his niche, talk defensive challenges, and feel the Philly Fever with baseball, and football. Greetings! I had the great privilege to speak with Dr. Francesca Royster, professor of English at DePaul University, on her essential new book, Black Country Music: Listening for Revolutions. Dr. Royster masterfully weaves the story of the relationship between blacks and country music, including the whitewashing of black artists for many years; the resurgence of black artists now making country music; and her personal journey as a fan of the genre, from the perspective of "queer theory and black feminism." Dr. Royster weaves it all together in a compelling narrative that is at once sobering, yet also very joyous in her appreciation of this wonderful music. A number of songs are interwoven in the narrative; all come from the playlist, CURATED BY DR. ROYSTER HERSELF, that accompanies this episode. That can be found here: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/18DVB3Y2KwI5rryJAMpt3a?si=8b3e321235c1417d I'm very appreciative that Dr. Royster not only spent time with me, but curated the playlist. Take some time to enjoy it - it's fantastic. See you all soon with a new episode!
What's the history and relationship between country music and Black people? That question and more is the subject of the new book, “Black Country Music: Listening for Revolutions,” by Francesca Royster. In the book, Royster writes about the careers of folks like Charley Pride, Darius Rucker, Tina Turner, Beyonce and Lil Nas X along with the white washing of country music to exclude black artists and how contemporary Black Artists are working to change that narrative.
