Sometimes, waiting for the conditions to be exactly right keeps us from seeing the opportunity in starting right now, even, literally, in our own backyards. But that certainly wasn't the case for one Charlotte, NC farm. Located inside the city limits off Brookshire Freeway is Small City Farm, owned and operated by Kim Shaw and Rohan Gibbs. Although it currently stands at three acres in a rolling ranch-house filled neighborhood, it was originally a ½ acre plot in the couple's South Charlotte backyard. Kim spent her childhood summers picking and packing produce for restaurants in Hilton Head, but she didn't actually set out to farm as an adult. Instead, she entered the food and beverage industry, and in the early 2000s found herself tending a garden for Chef Paul Verica while serving as the catering director for the Club at Longview. When her job was eliminated, she started growing produce and flowers full-time, and she's now grown into one of the region's most prized specialty producers, from delicate redbud flowers in the spring to Arkansas Traveler tomatoes in the summer and wide, deep green, winter collards that some of Charlotte's best chefs swear by. Small City Farm is a re-imagining of what we consider farming, and each season it proves how much creativity and ingenuity can yield.

Kirstyn Shaw has had a penchant for fashion since she started sewing at the age of six, but it wasn't until she had her "quarter life crisis" that she decided to make a career out of it. With a bachelor's degree from UCLA and a degree in apparel manufacturing from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM), Kirstyn wasted no time diving into the business. In 2008 she began designing and producing eco-friendly women's clothing for kika with her mom, Kim Shaw. While Kirstyn is a production wizard and has built great relationships in the business, her true passion is at the intersection of technology, sustainability, and fashion. I wanted to talk to Kirstyn to learn more about the business models she has explored. Her Business Philosophy: Do unto others as you would have done unto you - show kindness and respect in your relationships. Her advice to female entrepreneurs Don't fall in love with your inventory. Inventory can be one of the biggest killers in a business. Know what you're good at and delegate the rest. Delegation is key. And while we discuss the ins and outs of the indie film scene, we also mention… Middlebury, deception, good characters, overcoming addiction, Emma Watson, a love story, being deceived, investigating the paranormal, UCLA, feel as real as possible, fly on the wall filmmaking, three act structures, questioning the viewers, maintaining and making media… for an audience, fighting traffic, tape to tape, when you question what others hold dear, pulling the curtain back, Kings of Pastry, inspired by true events, film school, escaping from a straightjacket over Niagara Falls, , watching the film with a group of people, Kim Shaw, distribution systems, Chicago, identity theft, they did this thing that should be impossible, drawing movies, detractors and it’s all just content. “…the format and medium of documentaries nowadays, is so fantastic.
