"We as a society are guilty of turning a blind eye to the ongoing sexism and exploitation of women that is blatantly displayed in Hip Hop. You see, I love Hip Hop, but does Hip Hop love me?" - A Conscious Sista'. Misogyny is fundamentally defined as hatred and violence towards women. This "violence" is not limited to physical aggression; it extends to actions that make women feel uncomfortable, hostile behavior, harassment, and other things that cause hurt and trauma.• Misogynoir: When this hatred and violence are directed explicitly towards black women, it is referred to as Misogynoir. Biggie, The Great Frank White spit lyrics that demeaned women. Did he hate women? Does Hip-Hop hate women? Get On Code! This episode of Prof. Kimya's class focuses on misogyny within hip-hop culture, particularly examining the works of artists such as Biggie Smalls. Can hip-hop be revolutionary while simultaneously exhibiting misogynistic and homophobic elements, questioning the industry's power structures and the roles of both male and female artists? The conversation extends to how misogyny is perpetuated through lyrics and consumer expectations, touching upon historical contexts of sexualized content in media and the challenges of creating cultural change within the music industry. We need solutions for addressing misogyny in hip-hop, beyond mere boycotts, by fostering critical engagement, supporting local artists, and challenging deeply ingrained power dynamics.Yep. Uncover the untold legacy of Marcus Garvey with our special guest, Dr. Julius Garvey, son of the iconic leader. Dr. Garvey sheds light on his father's extraordinary journey from Jamaica to becoming a beacon of Black empowerment across the globe. Through personal anecdotes and historical insights, we explore how pivotal events and figures like the Berlin Conference and Booker T. Washington shaped Marcus Garvey's vision, and how this legacy continues to inspire global Black communities today.Dr. Garvey shares the compelling story of his father's politically charged trial, orchestrated by the FBI to tarnish and criminalize his revolutionary efforts. We dismantle the myths around Garvey, revealing the truth behind the accusations and the ongoing fight to restore his reputation. By drawing parallels with figures like Martin Luther King and Malcolm X, we underscore the persistent struggle against systemic oppression and the urgent need for historical justice and equality. The episode also broadens its focus to the influence of Black booksellers as cultural bastions, the ideological dynamics between Garvey's organization and the NAACP, and the entrepreneurial spirit that fuels the Garvey legacy. Through contributions from cultural nationalists and legal experts, we revisit the powerful messages of unity and empowerment that Marcus Garvey championed. Dr. Garvey's personal stories and reflections offer a rich narrative on how historical legacies continue to shape modern entrepreneurial journeys and community leadership.Support the showhttps://www.patreon.com/c/EA_BookClub

On this episode of Florida Matters, you'll hear about an effort to connect people with Black businesses throughout Tampa Bay. Among the flurry of executive orders President Trump signed in his first days back in the oval office: rolling back Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives in the federal government. It's a tactic Floridians are familiar with. Governor Ron DeSantis waged a ‘war on woke' over the past couple of years, targeting DEI efforts in schools and workplaces. But now big businesses are scaling back their DEI programs. That has prompted a backlash against those businesses. The battle over DEI and the ripple effects on shoppers and businesses comes as Black History Month gets underway. Nicole Payne, President of the Hillsborough County Black Chamber of Commerce, joined Florida Matters to explain how her organization works to strengthen Black-owned businesses in the region, and some of the hurdles they face. And Hillary Van Dyke talks about working to connect people with Black-owned businesses with the online directory she co-founded: the Green Book of Tampa Bay.
How are Black businesses doing? I mean, really doing? I took a look at the numbers for North Carolina, and a few studies of Black businesses in the US to find out. I gave my assessment of what's going well, areas of opportunity, and a few suggestions for a path forward.P.S. I hope the audio sounds better now. I recorded this episode in my room with the pop filter on, so my voice should sound smoother.I'd love to hear from you!Join our community, Please Hustle Responsibly: https://link.honeyandhustle.co/phrSupport the show:Upgrade to a paid membership, PHR+: https://link.honeyandhustle.co/phrplusTools we use to make this show: https://www.honeyandhustle.co/digitaltoolsSponsor The Podcast: https://www.honeyandhustle.co/sponsorsBuy The Interview Workbook for Storytellers: https://www.blurb.com/b/11662269-interview-workbook-for-storytellersConnect with Angela:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/AngelaHollowellLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/angelahollowell/Twitter: https://twitter.com/honeyandhustle

What does it take to run a thriving business in Washington? Lately, for a number of business owners around the Sound , the answer seems to be “too much.” January has seen the closure of a number of long time Black owned businesses in the Seattle area – including Jackson’s Catfish Corner and Flowers Just-4-U in Seattle’s Central District, Plum Bistro in Capitol Hill, La Familia in Des Moines, and Nate Jackson’s Super Funny Comedy Club in Tacoma. When faced with a rising number of Black-owned businesses saying “we can’t do this anymore” Converge Media didn’t just stand by. They launched a campaign to turn things around. This month, the local media organization announced a push to support Black businesses across the Sound. Converge Media's Besa Gordan tells us about the effort and the struggles she's hearing from Black business owners. Today, it provides no-cost financial counseling and coaching in 300 offices serving more than 1,000 locations, and is the only nonprofit allowed by federal regulators inside bank branches, with much of its programming funded through the private sector.
