Shakedown is a 1988 action film about corrupt cops starring Peter Weller and Sam Elliott. It's one of the most bonkers movies of the 80s, thanks no doubt to its writer/director, the madman James Glickenhaus. Madeline Koestner joins me once again to discuss this utterly bizarre flick, and she brought her attorney with her! Because this movie is full of so many crazy courtroom shenanigans that I just had to find out from an expert just how inaccurate this movie is. The answer will (not) surprise you!

Best Pick with Tom Salinsky and guests Anthony Asbury, Sue Dacre, Nigel Plaskitt and Robert Tygner Episode 223: Mean Green Mother From Outer Space Released 29 June 2022 For this episode, we took a deep dive into the creation of one scene in the movie Little Shop of Horrors. The movie was directed by Frank Oz, adapted by Howard Ashman from his off-Broadway play, with music by Alan Menken. In the climactic scene, the malevolent flesh-eating plant Audrey II has grown to 12 feet high and poor benighted Seymour Krelborn (Rick Moranis) is engaged in a battle to the death. Thus begins the song “Mean Green Mother From Outer Space” which was nominated for an Oscar. Every aspect of Audrey II was brought to life on set with a vast team of puppeteers working behind (and very often underneath) the scenes. You can hear how this all worked from plant performers Anthony Asbury, Sue Dacre, Nigel Plaskitt and Robert Tygner. The Plotaholics Podcast: Movie Reviews

This week, The Plotaholics discuss the 2018 modern day classic, 'A Star Is Born'--the fourth version of this film. It kind of feels insulting to call it a remake. This version, as we all know, stars Bradley Cooper as Jackson Maine, a country rocker and how a chance meeting he finds the woman of his dreams in Ally, a singer/songwriter who takes an instant level of affection for him. Things come to a head when Jackson's progressive hearing loss and substance abuse disrupts Ally's rise to stardom. Co-starring Sam Elliott, Dave Chappell, Eddie Griffin, and Andrew Dice Clay. Not much can really be said. The Beef Initiative is a way to find out more about how to source your animal protein through local sources and learn more about where your food comes from. Vinnie and Slim discuss how there has been a shift in information; as a result, there is variance between what some call "my truth" and absolutes, especially in the food industry. Vinnie gives a great example of building a kayak as what is meant by "absolute". Texas Slim gives a summary of the recent farming industry that has led to today's factory farming and its negative aspects. Slim explains the growth of mono-cropping and what it has done to our food supply. Vinnie recounts how in the 1970s the food industry shifted to using things like high fructose corn syrup. They then discuss a little of their personal histories and how it has led to being great observers. LOCAL SOURCING Not everyone has access to locally sourced meat, but if you can do it, it's a great option. Many factory farms feed their animals with grains treated with chemicals and the animals are treated with hormones. Vinnie and  Texas Slim discuss the many benefits of knowing where your animal protein comes from. Price manipulation and labeling laws of many meat products make it difficult to know where your food comes from. Texas Slim has some recommendations on how to contact a local rancher, communicate with them, learn from them, and get great products. But after her November fight loss to Holly Holm, all movie plans were scrapped. The movie was not filmed in Missouri.Though the plot is set in the town of Jasper, Missouri, Road House's infamous bar, The Double Deuce, was built for on-site filming in California. Some of the bar's interior footage was filmed in a real Anaheim bar that is now closed.Swayze was not a fan of the legendary mullet. As iconic as Swayze's mullet was, the actor referred to his Road House hairstyle as "the bane of my existence" in the biographical book One Last Dance. The NYPD uses the movie's three simple rules during retraining.Patrick, in the role of Dalton, lays down the three rules of the Double Deuce club. In 2015, New York Post exclusively reported that lecture portions of a mandatory, three-day retraining course for cops were being revamped with Road House as a training tool. Swayze's hotness caused problems on set. During shooting, a horde of middle-aged blonde women in a truck tried to pull up in front of the actor's trailer, in a wild attempt to speak with Swayze. During the film's river fight scene, a raft of Swayze fans cruised by. Another time, an extra, who was playing a waitress, was so lovestruck with the heartthrob she tripped and spilled her drinks on an unlucky extra nearby.   **TRIPLE LINDY AWARD** **REVIEW AND RATING** TOP 5Stephen:1 Breakfast club2 T23 Sandlot4 Back to the Future5 Mail order brides Chris:1. sandlots2. HWSI! Episode 130 Road House   Be Nice, until it is time to not be nice. Words to live by, or at least bounce by. Road House is a cult classic and beloved movie from 1989. Another movie that did not do well when first released but still has a strong following. With all the stuff that made the 80's movies the 80's movie, Road house comes out round house kicking for sure. As well as some great quotable lines. Also, some great fight scenes that find the actors doing the work instead of some stunt team.  Lead by Benny “the Jet” Urquidez. And let not forget Patrick Swayze's fabulous hair, only to be out done with a Mustaches less Sam Elliott. Well that is the discussion on this episode of How We Seeez it!  And as always, we have some great cocktails for this one as well.                      Hopefully you have seen it and will join us for this episode of “How We Seeez It! and hear the discussion on our takes on this one. We attempted (but alas did not yet perfect) a marmalade old fashioned this week for our episode on this hilarious, brilliant, dark, witty, arbitrary, and chaotic film, the Big Lebowski. We think this movie is an absolute must watch. Whether you think this movie has some spiritual deeper meaning, or is just a bundle of pure unhinged joy about a man in search for his rug....that's just like, your opinion, man. Starring Jeff Bridges, Julianne Moore, John Goodman, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Steve Buscemi, John Turturro, and Sam Elliott. Cheers! Marmalade Old Fashioned: Shake one tsp marmalade together with whiskey (preferably rye or light bourbon), 1/2 oz lemon juice, orange bitters with ice, strain and garnish with a twist of orange. Phil & Jake rank the very necessary activity of sleep, the very American foodstuff called peanut butter, and the very mustachioed actor Sam Elliott on the List of Every Damn Thing.VOTE HERE to help decide which topic we're going to re-rank on an upcoming episode. Polls are almost closed! If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: For the second time in recent episodes we discuss the songs of Chubby Checker (both "The Limbo Rock" and “Let's Twist Again”). I Know What You Did Last Summer was a post-Scream 90s horror movie. The title of the sequel was I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, which Phil doesn't approve of. The Karina Longsworth podcast You Must Remember This had a recent episode about Flashdance & Risky Business as part of the current season which is about sex in movies (which used to be a thing).  Pittsburgh is a city in western Pennsylvania where the Allegheny & the Monongahela rivers meet to form the Ohio. Phil claims that old Popeye cartoons are much more Olive Oyl and Bluto-centric than you'd think. Some of the better Popeye cartoons aren't streamable because WB's not crazy about the themes. Phil's favorite is "Can You Take It" in which Olive gets a job as a nurse for an underground fight club. Thimble Theater was the original comic strip that Popeye sprung out of.  Freddy Krueger was a villain in horror movies in the 80s who attacks people in their dreams. Phil has only ever seen the third Nightmare on Elm Street, where Laurence Fishburne is an orderly at a hospital for traumatized kids and the kids flip the script on Freddy and defeat him. Phil mentions a French scientist who thought sleep was a distraction, and caused himself health problems by staying awake for long periods. This may have been something his parents told him as a kid to get him to sleep. He doesn't know why the scientist was French either. We talk about “sack hounds” and “sack artists”. Phil had always understood these to mean lazy people who could sleep wherever. After looking it up on WW2-era slang websites it seems like a “sack artist” is more like a womanizer whereas a “sack hound” is someone who tries to sleep. Beetle Bailey is a simple, gag-based comic strip with a military setting. Peanut butter is traditionally made of peanuts, smashed. That's why Phil's idea of selling roasted peanuts as extremely crunchy peanut butter makes sense. To Phil. Peanut oil is the oil that you can squeeze out of peanuts. In peanut butter jars, it separates and has to be stirred back into the peanut butter. What? You think it'd be better to just have a jar of peanuts so that the oil will stay put? Yeah me too! Almond butter is mashed-up almonds. The Got Milk? ad campaign which emphasized milk's usefulness as a lubricant, was kicked off by a Michael Bay-directed ad in which a guy has jammed so much PB&J into his mouth that he can't say "Aaron Burr" to win a radio contest. It's a very common problem. George Washington Carver invented about three hundred products derived from peanuts, but did not invent peanut butter. Peanuts are legumes that are eaten as food in the world and are especially popular in the USA, Nigeria and Thailand. Phil used to work with someone who was Thai and she said that Americans all eat rancid peanuts in contrast to Thailand where they eat fresh ones. We're afraid she might be right! Phil went looking for pics of Lucy Pinder to link to and found this which is an NFT of a picture of her. We hope she gets a cut of this. Realizing that Lucy Pinder is a real person has taught Phil empathy. Boiled peanuts are a fantastic Southern food. They come in a wet paper bag (the kind that so many people have trouble fucking their way out of). Sam Elliott was on the Mission: Impossible TV show back in the early 1970s. He looked good even without the mustache.  We talk about a few movies, including The Big Lebowski, Power of the Dog, Young Guns and Tombstone. We also talk reflect on the Western and superhero movie genres in general. Here's the Sam Elliott episode of WTF with Marc Maron. Malk was the name of an alternative milk in a gag on the Simpsons from 1995. It's now a real product. So today I'm going to be the host, but, um, we have two great. Guests, but we're all kind of in on this [00:02:00] together. I'm Steve Guerra and I host the history of the papacy podcast as well as beyond the big screen podcast. I'm joined by James early and Sean MacGyver, Sean MacGyver is of the come and take a Texas history podcast. And James early is a professor from San Jacinto college who is an. Time's collaborator with Scott rank on his history unplugged podcast. Uh, it took a little doin, but we all came together. Are you excited to talk about Gettysburg? I am totally excited. I've been wanting to do this for a long time. I'm so glad we're finally doing it.Uh, why don't we just get we'll jump straight into it. James. Can you tell us a little bit about the background? Um, the book and the movie Gettysburg? Yes. The, uh, movie Gettysburg is based on a novel called the [00:03:00] killer angels, which was written in 1974, published in 1974 by Michael Shera or shore. I'm not really sure how that's pronounced.I think it shares is Shara, Shara. Okay. S H a R a. Uh, it was Michael Shara is kind of an interesting person. He was a writer in the 50, 60 seventies, eighties, a little bit. He wrote primarily science fiction and sports fiction, not too much historical fiction. He had four novels of which the killer angels is his second. And it's his only novel that is. Uh, historical fiction as a side note, it's interesting that he also wrote the book for love of the game, which was turned into a movie with Kevin Costner. But anyway, I don't want to get too far off track, but the killer angels was very well-received. It won the Pulitzer prize in 1975 and Shara, after he, after he wrote his fourth novel for love of the game killer angels was the second [00:04:00] one. After that he. Just wrote, well, actually not much of anything, if anything. And then he died in 1998. Uh, interestingly enough, after that his son, Jeff, Sharon, or Shara, uh, took up the torch and wrote a pre-qual called gods and generals and a sequel called the last full measure, making a civil war trilogy. And then Jeff Shaara went on to write many, many, many more historical novels, but. Going back to the killer angels. What's interesting about the killer angels is it tells the story of the battle of Gettysburg through the. And the thoughts of some of the major commanders on both sides. For example, there are chapters devoted to Robert Lee.What he is seeing, what he's thinking. There are chapters devoted to James Long street on the union side. The primary character is Colonel Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, who was the commander of the 20th Maine regiment. One of the key regiments on day two of the. [00:05:00] And there are other characters, of course, that are brought into it as well, but he really does a great job in the book.Putting you inside the mind of these commanders and what they were thinking and what they were feeling, what they were hoping to do, hoping to accomplish it's it's fiction. Of course, it's not a, it's not a regular history book. It's a, it's a historical novel, but I think Shera does or Shara, it's going to take me several times to get used to that, but, uh, it's it, he really.I think it's, it's a very accurate novel. A lot of the speeches and the dialogues are just made up, but others are based on things that these men wrote in their diaries or their letters or their memoirs. Uh, so it's a, it's a fantastic novel. I'm not going to lie. I'm just going to go ahead and lay my cards up ahead of time.I love this book. I love this book so much. I've read it probably five or six times, and I love this movie. This is one of my all time. Favorite movies. Of any genre, but anyways, so [00:06:00] that's the killer angels, the killer angels. It took them a while to make it into a movie, but the movie was made by Ted Turner and Ted Turner. It was going to be a mini series, but they decided to make it into a movie. And the movie itself is extremely long. In fact, I read that it's the longest feature film ever to be made and shown in movie theaters. Clocks in at about four hours and 15 minutes. There's an extended version. That's even longer. If it just in case four hours at 15 minutes is not long enough for you. But I remember when it came out, I was in grad school the first time. Uh, and I went and saw it, the theater. I think I was all by myself. My wife says, there's no way I'm going to watch a four hour movie war movie. So I went and saw it in the theater twice. So that's just how nerdy and how crazy I am, but I've always been a civil war nut. So, so the movie stars, it has an all-star cast it it's, it's an amazing cast. The primary [00:07:00] character on the. Confederate side is actually James Long street and he is played by Tom Berenger. Who's been in platoon and many, many other movies.Uh, Robert Lee. Another of the major characters he's played by Martin sheen. Everybody knows who Martin sheen is. He's been in films for several decades and many that he was on the west wing for many years. The TV show on the union side, the primary character is Colonel Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain. Who's played by Jeff Daniels. Also a veteran actor. Who's been in a million things and let's see, who am I leaving out among the major characters? Yeah, Sam Elliot, how can I leave out Sam Elliott, dog on it? Sam Elliott, if you don't know who Sam Elliott is, uh, just turn off this podcast right now and go do some research. Go watch like 10, 10 of his movies.Sam Elliott is a legend. He's been in many westerns as well as other movies. Yeah, it was in the big Lebowski. He played the cowboy and he was the narrator. He [00:08:00] was in a, they were, we were soldiers, uh, the Vietnam movie with El Gibson. He was. Gosh, he's been so many things. He was in the original Hulk movie.Uh, the one that was didn't it had Edward Norton, I think, or I don't know. I don't know. That was, he was in the original one with, uh, uh, direct. Okay. So yeah, he was the general, but anyway, uh, so great cast. There's a lot of other people, C Thomas Howell is in it. Uh, Jordan Richard Jordan plays Lewis arm Armistead, and this was his last role.Uh, you can tell he was dying of cancer and you could definitely tell he was not well. Uh, but he's such a, if you've seen, you know, Richard Jordan, if you've watched the hunt for red October, he's the, uh, he's the national security. No way really. I don't have to go back and watch that again. Folks, Sean is like Mr.Movie. He is a walking film and cyclic was in it too. There's a James Bond in there. You have to look [00:09:00]
