Auckland's Business Chamber CEO says we have nothing to lose by loosening transit visas for Chinese nationals. Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown's updated his Auckland Manifesto, laying out a Beehive to-do list. It includes calling for the Government to reconsider loosening transit visas for Chinese Nationals, giving them more freedom for short stays in the country. Simon Bridges told Ryan Bridge it would be an easy sugar hit for the economy. He says he can't think of single reason not to do it, as China's a lot more developed and wealthy than other South-East Asian countries. Bridges is also backing the mayor's renewed call for a tourist bed tax in the city. Browns calling for the Government to reconsider an Auckland tourist bed tax, adding a small levy on short term accommodation. Bridges told Bridge it'll help bring in funding so more major events can come to the city. He says both central and local government are failing Auckland when it comes to major events. Wednesday, May 7 - Host and American Family Farmer, Doug Stephan www.eastleighfarm.com shares the news affecting small farmers in America, including a focus on dairy trade challenges, disaster assistance from the USDA, and our relationship with other countries in relation to the tariffs. Then, the focus shifts to preparedness for an ICE encounter on your farm, knowing your rights as a business owner and the rights of your employees. Then, Doug introduces us to Steve Rapasky, owner of Meadow Sweet Apiaries near Pittsburgh, PA. Fun fact: most of Steve's beehives are actually located at Pittsburgh International Airport. His background goes back to growing up on a farm with livestock in addition to bees, then he got his degree in wildlife science at Penn State University and spent a decade as a wildlife biologist in the state agency before exiting into his own apiary with a certification as an Eastern Apiculture Society (EAS) Master Beekeeper. Many people want to get involved with having bees on their farm or property, and that's great because we need to continue to support the bees, but many don't know how to take care of them. We're also reminded that everything we eat that comes from the ground has a connection to bees, further exasperating the urgency to protect our honeybees and focus on their survival rate. You can learn more from Steve on MeadowSweetBees.com. Lastly, Doug opines the stresses at this time of year to get things in the ground, the lack of making health a priority for most farmers, the importance of rest and regular breaks, and more emphasis on why communities need to support family farmers. Beehive kids soccer explains NASCAR at Texas + Fast 5 Weekend Review by Ed Lane
Mars in the Beehive. The moon over Zavijava. A morning planet grouping includes two binocular solar system objects. And planetoid and asteroid are two words that can mean that same thing. When the first such objects were discovered, astronomers weren't sure what to call them. They had characteristics of planets and asteroids.
The Moon and Mars are flirting with danger – they’re sneaking up on the Beehive star cluster, in the constellation Cancer. The cluster doesn’t have much of a “sting,” though – it’s about 600 light-years away. The Beehive contains about a thousand stars, which are maybe 700 million years old – fairly young in astronomical terms. That means the Beehive maintains a mixture of stars of different masses. Its heaviest stars have burned out, leaving only their dead cores. About two-thirds of the remaining stars are red dwarfs – cool, faint embers only a fraction of the mass of the Sun. About a third are similar to the Sun. And about two percent are heavier than the Sun. Because more-massive stars burn through their nuclear fuel more quickly, those stars will expire first. The cluster’s brightest star is Epsilon Cancri. Although it looks like a single point of light, instruments reveal that it consists of at least three stars. All three are more than twice as massive as the Sun, so they’re nearing the end of the prime phase of life. Soon, they’ll puff up to giant proportions. After that, they’ll blow away their outer layers, exposing their dead cores – and the Beehive will lose some of its luster. The Beehive is close to the lower left of the Moon at nightfall, and is an easy target for binoculars. Mars looks like an orange star below the Moon. It’ll slip past the cluster over the next couple of days. Script by Damond Benningfield

The Government has admitted the number of families it said would be eligible for the full $75 a week benefit of its flagship childcare tax policy was wrong. The government said 21,000 families would be eligible - but just 249 families had received the full entitlement since the policy came into force last year. So who is responsible for the blunder? Also, police have launched a wide-ranging investigation of hundreds of police recruit applicants after learning some prospective cops who failed physical tests got approval to start police college anyway. How many officers are impacted? To answer those questions, Newstalk ZB political reporter Azaria Howell joined Nick Mills for the Beehive Buzz. Former Labour leader Andrew Little has today confirmed he will stand for the Wellington mayoralty in the upcoming local body elections. Little said he is standing for mayor because Wellington needs “urgent change” and “serious leadership”. “I'm confident I can win,” he said today. He had previously ruled out throwing his hat in the ring but has revealed this morning that he wants to “end the chaos at council” which he believed he had the experience to do. He wanted to return the council to “what it should be doing” and serving the people. Little says he's been approached by “quite a cross-section” of Wellingtonians asking him to run. “Obviously Labour people but also National Party, Green Party people, community leaders, business people.” He said the city was in a fragile state and believed some major projects could be reconsidered. “We need to make sure what we are doing isn't causing disruption at a particularly sensitive time.” The first phase of the Golden Mile project was scheduled to start this month, but Little suggested further work could be deferred. “For the remainder of the project, I'm not saying don't do it, what I am saying is let's have a think about when it might be best to do that.” The city needed to recover, he said. Little's main priorities have been listed as investing in parks, swimming pools and libraries, prioritising cheaper transport and housing development, supporting small businesses, taking action on climate and honouring the Treaty. He said it was clear to him that Wellington “is in trouble”. He highlighted the city's cost of living crisis, public service cuts and the council being “out of touch” as three of the major issues facing Wellington residents. He said he wants to do away with “regressive” policies like asset sales, closure of community facilities and “millions of dollars in corporate welfare for an international cinema owner”. “My focus as mayor will be getting the best for Wellington. That means being able to work constructively with the Government in the city's interests and it means standing up to the Beehive when needed. It means being clear in my Labour values but always working across political lines to be a mayor for all of Wellington.” “This council [has] on the block a number of community facilities like the Khandallah pool, like Begonia House - those things should be our priorities, they're certainly my priorities. Those are the things that strengthen communities and make a city.“ He said the recent rates rises were “not acceptable” and making the city unaffordable, and thought the council needed a “much tighter grip on council finances”. While he believed cycleways were a good thing some routes had been poorly executed. He said his track record showed he was able to work with people from across the political spectrum. “We all love this city. We're creative, we're full of talent, we're diverse, and we're a place where people from all walks of life can feel included and make a home. “Wellington is the place I chose with my wife Leigh to raise our family and there's nowhere else we would rather be.” He has submitted his nomination seeking the Wellington Labour Party's support for his mayoral campaign and a formal campaign launch will follow in the coming weeks. Little entered Parliament in 2011 and was leader of the Labour Party and leader of the Opposition from 2014 to 2017. Little was a senior minister under former prime ministers Dame Jacinda Ardern and Chris Hipkins. Candidates who have confirmed plans to run for the mayoralty are Tory Whanau, councillor Ray Chung, businessman Karl Tiefenbacher, conservationist Kelvin Hastie, Wellington Live owner Graham Bloxham and former city councillor Rob Goulden. The election will be held on October 11. Little joined Nick Mills to discuss his candidacy. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Foreign Minister Winston Peters has been in Hawaii this week, where he gave a speech discussing the United States tariffs on the rest of the world. But in that speech he criticised use of the term "trade war" - despite Prime Minister Christopher Luxon using the term himself. It also comes after Luxon had a number of conversations with world leaders. Peters said the pair hadn't discussed Luxon's speech or his calls with world leaders ahead of time: “So I hope that he'll get my message and he'll call me next time”.

We had the pleasure of interviewing sym fera over Zoom video!Los Angeles-based sym fera are a duo that make atmospheric electronic rock music (reminiscent of early Nine Inch Nails) with an interesting twist - nobody knew who was in the band. This mysterious nature and captivating melodies had intrigued listeners, with their single 11/8 amassing over 400,000 streams. The song was also placed within the hit television series, Ozark, creating further interest in the band. The group recently released a remix package of 11/8 (orchestral and electronic remixes). sym fera recently drop their newest single, ‘Beg'. At the same time as the release, they will reveal their identities (Nick Simmons – the son of Gene Simmons and Vinnie Ferra – co-founder of Beehive).Their first EP was released under State of The Art Records, helmed by Ian McEvily, Marc Jordan, and Mike Clemenza, who themselves did not know the real names of the band members before they made an offer to sign them. The reason for hiding their identities was to create a social experiment in a time when name and social following seem to be the most common reasons for artists to garner any support or movement early on. Would they be successful without using any industry ties? Could they break through the noise and garner a following without millions of followers? The answer is, yes. We want to hear from you! Arielle Nissenblatt, founder of the Earbuds Podcast Collective, shares her extensive experience in the podcasting and newsletter space, shedding light on the intersection of these two mediums. Starting her journey in 2017 with a podcast recommendation newsletter, Arielle initially aimed to help others discover quality content without the intention of becoming a podcaster herself. However, as her passion for podcasts grew, she evolved her platform to include her own podcasting endeavors, creating a dynamic ecosystem where her newsletter and podcasts support each other. This episode explores the strategies Arielle employs to build and maintain her audience, emphasizing the significance of capturing email addresses as a way to foster direct communication with listeners.Arielle dives into the nuts and bolts of content creation, discussing how to craft newsletters that not only promote podcast episodes but also provide unique insights and valuable takeaways for subscribers. She stresses that newsletters should not simply repeat podcast content but should serve as distinct entities that enrich the listener's experience. By incorporating listener feedback, relevant quotes, and engaging visuals, creators can create compelling narratives that resonate with their audience. This focus on quality content is crucial for building a dedicated community that actively engages with both the newsletter and the podcast.Towards the end of the episode, Arielle shares her thoughts on monetization strategies for newsletters, drawing on her own experiences with early sponsorships and innovative collaborations. She encourages creators to seek partnerships that align with their content and audience, suggesting that the value of a sponsorship can extend beyond monetary compensation. By exploring various newsletter platforms and their features, Arielle provides guidance on selecting the right tools to maximize engagement and growth. The episode concludes with actionable insights that empower podcasters and newsletter creators to enhance their strategies, build their audience, and ultimately thrive in the content landscape.Takeaways: A newsletter can effectively serve as a lead magnet for your podcast's audience. Engaging newsletters should provide unique content beyond just promoting new podcast episodes. Capturing email addresses is crucial for maintaining direct communication with podcast listeners. Quality content is essential; both your podcast and newsletter should stand on their own. Using platforms like Beehive or Substack can enhance community engagement in newsletters. Monetization opportunities exist even for small newsletters if the content aligns well with sponsors. On this week's show, Slate's books and culture columnist, Laura Miller, sits in for Julia. The panel begins with KAOS, Netflix's new series that reimagines Greek mythology in modern times. Created by Charlie Covell (End of the F***ing World), KAOS stars Jeff Goldblum as Zeus, alongside a host of excellently cast deities. But is the show too self-satisfied and high off its own supply? The three investigate. Then, they dive into Close Your Eyes, a Spanish film made by Victor Erice (The Spirit of the Beehive). After 30 years away from the medium, the filmmaker returns with a beautiful meditation on the nature of art and identity. Finally, the hosts contemplate Spotify: is the streaming service a glorious cornucopia or the algorithm that ate your music? This conversation is inspired by this essay by Tiffany Ng for the MIT Technology Review: “How to break free of Spotify's algorithm.” In the exclusive Slate Plus segment, the panel hacks productivity, inspired by a recent episode of Vergecast, “What's in a productivity system?” Email us at culturefest@slate.com. Endorsements: Dana: Motivated by Choire Sicha's review for The Strategist, Dana's endorsement this week is a goofy desk timer: the mooas Dodecagon Time Ball Mini Timer. Laura: Entitlement by Rumaan Alam, a novel that's to be published soon. Steve: “Never Going Back Again,” a song off of Fleetwood Mac's Rumours album, performed by Lindsey Buckingham. Steve's currently learning to play it on the guitar, which gave him a newfound appreciation of the song itself. Make sure to check out Buckingham's performance at USC.
