The idea for the podcast came when they realized just how much they talk – a lot – when watching films from their favorite cinematic era. Their wedding theme was “a light nod to the ‘80s,” so there's that, too. Both hail from the Midwest but have called Los Angeles home for several years now. Anna is a writer who received her B.A. in Film/Video from Columbia College Chicago and M.A. in Film Studies from Chapman University. Her dark comedy short She Had It Coming was an Official Selection of 25 film festivals with several awards won for it among them. Derek is an attorney who also likes movies. It is a point of pride that most of their podcast episodes are longer than the movies they cover. We'd love to hear from you! Send us a text message.
Spider-Man Team-Up #7 (1997)Look, I know it's supposed to be more Thunderbolts but the “Justice Like Lightning” trade tricks you into reading a Spider-Man book. Thankfully, it is chronologically congruent to the ongoing storyline that we are covering so let's keep going.Spider-Man is framed for murder and the Thunderbolts are the only ones to can help (because everyone else is dead). Songbird and Mach-1 brawl with the web-slinger while Atlas signs a rooftop autograph using his fingernails. It is ultimately revealed the Enclave (aka Wilford Brimley and the Egon Spanglers) are sending androids out to muck up the works and that really steams Mach-1's ponytail. Also, Spider-Man hits a brick wall, Stan Lee makes Batman obese, Techno goes full Dolby and Mary Jane's course books are just too damn EXPENSIVE!All this plus Jen and Shawn share their experience at the latest RetroMania and talk about the new, bizarre Superman movie toys.*** PROPER COMIC BOOK DISCUSSION STARTS AT 00:12:30 ***Promos: 8TW AUDIO WORKS (https://twotruefreaks.com/podcast/8tw-promo-pilot-season/)Continue the conversation with Shawn and Jen on Twitter / Instagram / Facebook / Threads / Bluesky or email the show at worstcollectionever@gmail.comAlso, get hip to all of our episodes on YouTube in its own playlist! https://bit.ly/WorstCollectionEverYTDownload the podcast on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and wherever you get your favorite shows. The Mikes head to Memphis to revisit the 1993 legal thriller The Firm, starring Tom Cruise and the late, great Gene Hackman.Join Mike Field and Mike Butler as they dive into this twisty tale of ambition, corruption, and contract law—with some very aggressive nondisclosure agreements. Field can't get over the fact that Wilford Brimley, America's oatmeal-loving grandpa, plays a terrifying heavy who actually gets the crap kicked out of him. Butler's more focused on Cruise doing peak early-90s sprinting. It's a John Grisham adaptation soaked in suspense, shady deals, and surprisingly intense library scenes. Is The Firm still worth the retainer fee after all these years? Or is it time to dissolve this one from your movie memory? So, grab your popcorn and soda, please notice the exits to the left and right of you and settle down for Forgotten Cinema. What's your favorite John Grisham adaptation? Let us know in the comments!
We're back for another season of themed movies where this time, we're focusing on “Flops”! Get ready to lock your doors and check your blood, because this week on Shoot The Hostage, Dan and Sarah are diving deep into the icy paranoia of John Carpenter's 1982 masterpiece, The Thing! After 12 years of podcasting, Sarah's finally talking about what she calls her favourite movie of all time. No pressure! Expect the usual foul-mouthed fun as we dissect this creature feature classic, which was a big flop when it first hit cinemas in 1982. We'll be scratching our heads over why this cinematic gold – starring the magnificent Kurt Russell as R.J. MacReady, the moustache-less Wilford Brimley and the always-watchable Keith David didn't set the box-office alight. We'll be pondering whether the critical mauling at the time had anything to do with this box office bomb's frosty reception. In this episode, we'll be getting our teeth into: The insane practical effects by Rob Bottin (with a little un-credited help from Stan Winston) that still hold up better than most CGI sludge today. The film's return to the source material novella Who Goes There? and its relationship to the 1951 film The Thing from Another World. Was Carpenter's version a remake, a re-imagining, or something else entirely? The film's themes – is it a reflection of Cold War paranoia or something more akin to the AIDS epidemic of the early 80's? OF COURSE, we'll be arguing about that ending. Who's A THE THING! So, if you're a fan of movies that didn't do well at the box office but found their audience later, or if you just love a bit of John Carpenter brilliance, then strap in. We promise spoilers and swearing. You've been warned! Have you checked out the excellent podcast with Chris & Joel, Just The Thing? In this week's Born to Watch episode, Matt and Damo dive into a quirky 80s classic that inspired guilty pleasure rewatches and dreams of window display romance: Mannequin (1987). Join the guys as they reminisce about how Kim Cattrall's Emmy and Andrew McCarthy's Jonathan brought a spark of movie magic into their lives. From Matt's pre-teen obsession with Kim Cattrall to Damo's confusion over the movie's inexplicable ancient Egyptian backstory, no stone is left unturned in this Mannequin (1987) Movie Review.Released on February 13, 1987 (nearly 38 years to the day!), Mannequin tells the story of Jonathan Switcher, a struggling artist whose life takes an unexpected turn when his mannequin creation comes to life. Played by Cattrall, Emmy is the dream girl in window dressing form—literally. The duo's escapades in a struggling department store are filled with over-the-top characters, 80s montages, and laugh-out-loud moments, making this film a surreal yet iconic time capsule. As the hosts explore the nostalgia factor, they note the undeniable charm of Andrew McCarthy, a quintessential Brat Pack star. Damo points out that McCarthy's relatable, down-on-his-luck artist is impossible to hate—even when dragging a mannequin around town in plain sight. Kim Cattrall, meanwhile, exudes charisma, foreshadowing her future role as the fearless Samantha in Sex and the City.Of course, the conversation wouldn't be complete without a nod to Mannequin's over-the-top supporting cast. James Spader shines as a sniveling antagonist, while G.W. Bailey (aka Captain Harris from Police Academy) essentially reprises his role as a bumbling authority figure. And then there's Hollywood Montrose, played by Meshach Taylor, whose flamboyant energy adds humour and heart to the film. The soundtrack gets its due praise, with the guys singing the praises (literally) of Starship's Oscar-nominated hit, "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now." Fun fact: the song became one of the biggest singles of 1987, topping charts in both the U.S. and U.K. Yet despite its commercial success, Mannequin was panned by critics. Matt shares a particularly brutal review from Roger Ebert, who described the film as “dead.” Still, Damo counters with evidence of Mannequin's enduring appeal: a 46-week theatrical run and a cult following that persists today. The team breaks down the movie's highlights and low points in the Good, Bad, and Ugly segment. The guys rave about the film's outrageous opening scene set in ancient Egypt, complete with comedic subtitles. However, they can't help but cringe at questionable plot points—like the inexplicable romance centered on store displays and a climactic Benny Hill-style chase through the department store. And let's not forget the scene that drove Damo to rage: Andrew McCarthy casually tossing away a perfectly good choc wedge!Throughout the episode, Matt and Damo strike a balance between affectionate nostalgia and merciless critique. They reflect on how Mannequin epitomises the era's campy charm while acknowledging that its caricatured characters and absurd premise could never fly in today's world of high-concept blockbusters. So, if you're ready for a stroll down 80s memory lane filled with synth scores, big hair, and mannequins that spring to life, this episode is for you. Tune in for laughs, trivia, and some wild tangents about department store nostalgia, robot brothels, and Wilford Brimley's ageless face.Don't miss this blast from the past! It's the end of Spooktober... nobody trusts anybody now and we're all very tired, as we chill out with the original prince of podcasting RJ MacReady and John Carpenter's frozen freakfest takes its rightful place in the pod pantheon. It's 1982's The Thing, directed by John Carpenter, written by Bill Lancaster, and starring Kurt Russell, Wilford Brimley, Keith David and Donald Moffat. An absolute masterclass in the art of practical make-up and on-camera special effects, it's a movie that still looks outstanding to this day, now 42 years after it hit the screen. Critics hated the film upon its release, accusing Carpenter of only being interested in pushing the limits of technical achievement, and slacking on character and story. While I'd take issue with the latter critique, the former is exactly what has made the movie an enduring favourite. As for its story, this is a scenario so rife with paranoia that it has since gone on to become a successful board game. Sadly, The Thing is not available to stream in Canada at the time of publication, but you can nab it on Blu-ray for $5 most places and it's well worth owning on physical media. Other works discussed in this episode include the Venom franchise, Invaders From Mars, Poltergeist, Transformers, Lover, Stalker, Killer, Sweet Bobby: My Catfish Nightmare, Paranormal Activity 2, Cloverfield, 10 Cloverfield Lane, Poltergeist III, Truth or Dare (2017), Death Becomes Her, Gladiator II, The X-Files, Lost, Severance, Clear and Present Danger, and Escape From New York. We'll be back next week to kick off No-Theme-ber, a lawless month where anything goes, as Roxy Fever's Jackson McDonald returns to the show with a redemption pick from his own collection, and to promote the new King Bob album Rookie available now wherever you get your music. He's making us circle back to Hitchcock with a classic mistaken identity thriller, 1959's North by Northwest, with Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

Welcome back to another episode of the Video Store Podcast! As baseball season is winding down, we've selected four more baseball films to help you get through the post-season, especially if your team isn't looking quite as good as they were at the start. Batting first is 1988's Bull Durham, written and directed by Ron Shelton. This film is a wonderful snapshot of minor league ball in the late 80s and reminds the audience that it's not just about the game. It's about figuring out who you are and what you want out of life, regardless of your occupation. Starring Kevin Costner, Susan Sarandon, and Tim Robbins, it's a drama that will keep you swinging for the fences. Next up is 1989's Major League. A wealthy divorcee obtains the Cleveland Indians in the divorce but wants to relocate the team to a warmer climate. However, the escape clause only triggers if attendance drops below a certain threshold. Stacking the team with nobodies and has-beens, she hopes to move to Miami by the end of the season. When the team learns why they've been dealt the hand they've dealt, they rally to show her what they're really made of. It's a cheeky comedy that will make you stand up and cheer. Batting third in our line up is The Natural from 1984, starring Robert Redford, Glenn Close, Robert Duvall, Kim Basinger, Wilford Brimley, Barbara Hershey, Darren McGavin, and Robert Farnsworth. Adapted from a book of the same name by Bernard Malamud, The Natural is a 4-time Academy Award-nominated film about finding your purpose, even in less-than-ideal circumstances, and knowing that you could be “the greatest that ever was.”On clean-up duty is 1989's Field of Dreams. If you podcast it, they will come, and they hopefully will check out this film. Field of Dreams is about creating space, both literally and figuratively, for the unimaginable. It's about making peace with your past, and moving towards a better future. It's a truly beautiful film, nominated for three Academy Awards, and boasts an incredible cast of performers, including Kevin Costnery, Amy Madigan, Ray Liotta, James Earl Jones, Burt Lancaster, Gaby Hoffmann, and Tim Busfield, among others. What's the worst kind of parody you can do? Why did Pharrell wear that hat? And what's the hottest new club track of the summer? We fire up the answers to these questions and more as we watch Season 2, Episode 24 of Family Matters.Alex Diamond, David Kenny, and John McDaniel heard that the long-running network sitcom Family Matters ends with side character Steve Urkel going to space. And the best way to figure out how that happened - obviously - is to watch the last episode first and make our way backwards through nearly ten years of television.Join our countdown to number one (and our slow descent into madness) in all the places you expect internet people to be:Website: jumpingtheshuttle.spaceEmail: jumpingtheshuttle@gmail.comInstagram: @JumpingTheShuttle / @ThatAlexD / @dak577Twitter: @JumpingShuttle / @ThatAlexD / @dak577TikTok: @JumpingTheShuttle / @ThatAlexD / @dak577Brought to you by Smooth My Balls

Wilford Brimley
What would you do if you had $2000 burning a hole in your pocket, access to a university office building for a few hours, and eight friends who all had nothing better to do at the same time? Probably make a movie better than this. Glenn Berggoetz is a magician who, through persuasion or spiked drinks, convinces a few other people to spend a beautiful, sunny Colorado day "filming" a travesty that he wrote, directed and produced. With all the hiking, cycling, and craft breweries within a short drive of the Metropolitan State University of Denver, there were a plethora of better options to waste an afternoon. Glenn Berggoetz plays an English professor who "fights" bad guys. "Writing" that only amuse Glenn. Glenn wins. Society loses. To Die Is Hard Final Grades Steve: Always looking for silver linings, "Eternal Optimist" Steve says Glenn deserves some credit for production value, and praises the movie for being well lit and audible. But, he also didn't actively watch most of it. Bottom shelf. Brandon would gladly be in a future Glenn Berggoetz production if he films another one within three kilometers of his house. Agreement all around that the movie featured good lighting and sound quality, but would have preferred if the movie could be neither seen nor heard. Bottom shelf. Cocktail of the Week: Wisconsin Old Fashioned 2 oz Brandy Orange slice Maraschino Cherries A sugar cube Lemon-lime soda Muddle orange slice, cherries and sugar in a rocks glass. Add brandy quantity of your preference. Stir to combine. Top with your favorite lemon-lime soda. Garnish with additional orange wedge, more cherries and some of that sweet, sweet "cherry juice." Call your health care provider's scheduling line and make an appointment to get your A1C checked. Cocktail Grade: A sugar bomb that will have the ghost of Wilford Brimley haunting your nightmares. But you know what, screw that guy. The residents and supper clubs of the Great State of Wisconsin know better. Have you ever seen those memes that compare the co-stars of “The Firm”, Wilford Brimley looking elderly at age 56 and Tom Cruise looking young at age 56?These memes show us that these days, people are aging much more gracefully, or at least not according to the same timetable they used to.Did the timetable ever make sense to begin with?Is there supposed to be a specific age where we begin to question whether Fine is a 4-Letter Word?Kimberly, or Kimby Samson grew up without a lot of specific values. It was more like learning through modeling rather by teaching. Her parents showed her an example and she was expected to follow – there wasn't a lot of conversation. When it came time for her Bat Mitzvah, she was told she couldn't have one, and she'd get a big wedding instead.Oh, and did she – Kimby got the most fabulous, amazing wedding – as she says, the wedding of her mother's dreams! In this episode, I didn't ask Kimby about that specific moment when she realized things weren't “fine” – it was implied that since we were talking about the midlife crisis, especially as it pertains to women, hitting “midlife” is when we're supposed to begin facing those questions. For Kimby, it was finding she had done well in her career, in her great marriage and with her three wonderful children, and also seeing that she was bored. Her journey was to find her mojo again. And then she wrote a guide to help you do the same. Her recently published book is appropriately called, F*CK THIS: Practical Advice To Get You Through Your Midlife Crisis. In a moment, when you meet Kimby, you'll get a new point of view about this midlife time. You're looking to push an easy button – “change your career”, “reconnect with your dreams” – and “take this pill”.What if it's not an easy button but more a matter of taking one small step at a time? Maybe instead of big milestone celebrations, make every moment a small party?Allowing your curiosity to take you on a journey where one thing leads to the next and you discover things you'd never thought possible?Kimby's hype song is "Milkshake" by Kelis.Resources:Kimberly Samson's website: https://themidlife.co/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kimberly-samson-460593227 Facebook: https://facebook.com/themidlife.co Instagram: https://facebook.com/themidlife.podcast X (formerly Twitter): https://x.com/kimbynotkim Get Kimby's newly released book, F*CK THIS: Practical Advice to Get You Through Your Midlife Crisis at https://amzn.to/3UDdKDZ Invitation from Lori:If, like Kimby, everything in your life is good but you're still bored, the 5 Easy Ways to Start Living The Sabbatical Life guide is for you.Once you read it, you'll ✅ Discover a counter-intuitive approach to making intentional changes in mindset and lifestyle.✅ Learn how to own your feelings and your struggles so you can address them.✅ Find out how to face fears, step out of your comfort zone, and rewire your beliefs. It's only 7 pages, so it won't take you long to get through. Katie and Bridget hang out in Antarctica as they re-watch the movie: The Thing! It's a story all about how when you shove a bunch of depressed dudes into an isolated and cold location with no direction on their research, they will begin to all suspect one another are aliens! ...Mainly because yeah one/some/all of them are aliens! Come along as we follow the research team that gets thrust into their very own game of Clue. When a Thing (take a sip) is discovered to have infiltrated their compound, the men attempt to figure out who's been infected and how to defeat it before it's too late. With the help of some X-Files-esq home movies, along with lots of deaths and mutilations of their co-workers, the men discover the Things (take a sip) can be anyone or anyThing but thankfully they can also be set on fire. Will our characters be able to make it out with the help of non-stop Molotov cocktails? Do aliens also have rights according to that one guy (who was at the time, an alien)!? Released in 1982, it was directed by John Carpenter and stars Kurt Russell, Keith David, Wilford Brimley, and Richard Masur.

Welcome to another episode of this ridiculous podcast, with ridiculous hosts who have ridiculous opinions talking to ridiculous listeners about a ridiculous band. It's just ridiculous.Randy pulls out his Wilford Brimley impersonation and is absolutely delighted by the sight of Freddie's football getup in the Gaga video and Brian's bone guitar! We also get down to the serious questions, like "Who's banging Mrs. Clause?", "What's the matter with Andrew?", and of course, "Are your men on the right pills?" Randy has beef with Corey, Kev is caught in the middle, and this really is the only life for all of us. So sit back, put your feet up, we're talking Queen!"This is the only life for me" or possibly, "Stepping Out, ala Queen"If Randy were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "This is the only life for me" or possibly, "Stepping Out, ala Queen"Today's episode covers only our second song from "The Works", the piano-led Freddie movie song, "Keep Passing The Open Windows".NOTE: If you want to skip ahead to Randy and Kev's manifestations and the wheel spin, that happens at 33.05Thanks to everyone who tuned in to the last episode and left us some comments on Twitter, Facebook, and BlueSky! We'll always try to answer any questions you have and seriously appreciate any corrections you make to anything we get wrong. And thanks so much for all your support as usual. In remote Antarctica, a group of American research scientists are disturbed at their base camp by a helicopter shooting at a sled dog. When they take in the dog, it brutally attacks both human beings and canines in the camp and they discover that the beast can assume the shape of its victims. A resourceful helicopter pilot (Kurt Russell) and the camp doctor (Richard Dysart) lead the camp crew in a desperate, gory battle against the vicious creature before it picks them all off, one by one. In honor of October, Halloween, and scaring Max. Today on Buzzn The Tower we'll work ourselves into a paranoid frenzy as we talk about the John Carpenter cult classic, The Thing. I'm Mo Shapiro and joining me as always the Wilford Brimley to my Kurt Russell, Max Sanders. And with that.

The guys both have Berkshire tales to tell, including the physical side effects of having too much fun at Tanglewood and the benefits of opting for the cheap seats for a Pittsfield production of Cabaret. Then, the guys read a letter from Sarah that goes down a Wilford Brimley rabbit hole that turns into a debate about the scariest movies. Finally, a voicemail from Cheyenne in Portland asks if the guys would rather lick the bottom of their shoe or lick a stranger's phone.
