Summary: A creature named Kyubey offers Madoka and Sayaka a wish if they agree to become 'magical girls' and fight abstract beings called “witches.” However, a magical girl named Homura is, for uncertain reasons, determined to stop this agreement.
No offence to the fans I just hate them
This week Sayaka makes a decision she will never regret, Homura continues her full court defense of Madoka, and Kyubey makes me rethink my stance on cats.
This week we meet in a dream, hunt some witches, and Kyubey is cool, right? Right?

It's an all-Magical Girl episode! Lyra seizes the chance to make Dan watch all 12 episodes of the anime Puella Magi Madoka Magica, and Dan introduces Lyra to Sofia Coppola with The Virgin Suicides. It's quite an intergenerational debate! Honestly, Dan doesn't get it, and Lyra spends a lot of energy trying to get him to understand why she loves this anime so much. Plus: the female gaze, The Wonder Years, and Kyubey, an adorable, interdimensional "little shit."Intro music from Yuki Kajiura's Madoka Magica score.Mid-show and outro music from Air's The Virgin Suicides score.

In 1985, Mamoru Oshii and Yoshitaka Amano, with the help of a seemingly infinite budget, made a haunting and singular video animation feature called ANGEL'S EGG, and this week I made former animephobe Molly Lambert (MTV News) watch it and talk about it with me. Good news: she's not scared of anime anymore! Bad news: We can't really tell you what happens in this film. But that's not really a bad thing — it may or may not be Oshii's meditation on losing the Christian faith, and as such is a bramble of amazing dreamlike imagery and nihilism. In the second half of the episode, Eric Thurm (Drunk T*D Talks) and I continue down the Madoka sinkhole, into That Episode and more. There was so much to discuss, from income inequality in Mitakihara City, how to make a cat cosplay as Kyubey, and crushing loneliness. In completely predictable news, Madoka Magica is proving to be too thematically dense for one podcast! I'll be releasing some bonus content from this week's discussion with Eric on the Patreon, so stay tuned for that. As Yosenex recovers from JLPT 2, Alkrea grabs his seat and joint the cast as they discuss Act 11! The episode is darker, much closer to the manga, predictions of a major battle with generals... New music to get the mood going, Seiya calls Mamoru a douchebag like Kyubey, discovery that Mercury isn't useless, the senshi have real time attacks, DJ Ranma S fails speaking Mako-chanese 305, and is Alkrea turning into Makoto Kino?
Apologies in advance for the audio quality! We were fighting some technical witches to get this episode to you. Burr explains the latest low def craze, Cube World, and finally gets around to starting The Last of Us before waxing poetic over mecha movie, Pacific Rim. Kitsune gives us her first thoughts on Attack on Titan and follows with a couple movie reviews of her own: Red 2 and RIPD. Does Sgt. Frog have what it takes to bring down Madoka Magica? How do you say it's cold? Find out in language share. A dramatic train rescue and the great Miyazaki gets some heat in our news segment.

What? Huh? What’s a podcast? I’m not even sure anymore. But luckily David Estrella is here to help re-discover the true meaning of podcasting in the latest episode of the Ani-Gamers Podcast. Unfortunately, he doesn’t help me remember to introduce myself. Whoops! In this episode, we talk about crying anime girls, genre deconstructions, and spurious voice acting performances as we tackle the hugely popular magical girl anime Puella Magi Madoka Magica. Don’t worry if you haven’t seen the show — we’ve separated our spoiler talk into a separate section of the podcast after the outro song. Everything in the main section is free of Madoka spoilers (though we might slip in some spoilers for older series on occasion). DIRECT DOWNLOAD – RSS Feed – iTunes – Send us Feedback! – More episodes (Runtime: 1 hour, 36 minutes) [0:00:00] Intro: “Kill Me” by Lame Drivers [0:00:17] Podcast-related news and introductions! (Host Evan Minto forgot to introduce himself, like an idiot.) We also talk about iDOLM@STER for a bit since David reviewed it on the site. [0:05:14] Madoka review starts. We decide on not spoiling the series until the end of the show (separated into a post-outro section). [0:09:58] The fan culture around Madoka is incredibly important to an understanding of the show, so we take a good look at the zeitgeist. [0:19:52] There’s a lot of suffering and sadness in Madoka. Which parts worked, and which ones didn’t? [0:23:53] The English dub has some spectacular hits and embarrassing misses. We also describe the fictional life story of Christina Vee. [0:32:35] Madoka is undoubtedly a deconstruction of the magical girl genre, but what does that mean? Does it help or hurt the show? Evan says the word “deconstruction” over and over without really explaining what he’s talking about, so, uh… sorry about that. In this case he’s basically talking about examining and taking apart a genre by looking at the consequences of the fantasies inherent therein. [0:43:04] Shaft and Akiyuki Shinbo are known for their quirky art style. Is it appropriate for Madoka’s ambitious narrative? [1:02:44] We lay down some final thoughts on Puella Magi Madoka Magica. [1:05:35] Leave us a comment! Review us on iTunes! Follow us on Twitter (@AniGamers, @VamptVo, @QX_20XX)! [1:09:38] Outro: “Kill Me” by Lame Drivers [1:09:59] David and Evan spoil the heck out of Madoka Magica as they continue their discussion of the series. Don’t listen past the end of the outro song unless you’ve already seen Madoka or are OK with having major plot twists spoiled. Also, uh, we kinda spoil some stuff from Gurren Lagann and Serial Experiments Lain. Sorry!
Back to talking about anime. In case you are confused within the first ten minutes of this episode, go listen to the last episode I was on the AniManga Podcast. I thought it would be fun to do a simultaneous recording of our show and their show. They edit their recording their own way and I edit my recording my way. It managed to work out in a...
