Download PodcastOn tonight's program we will share updates on Russell Maroon Shoatz who is a community activist, founding member of the Black Unity Council, former member of the Black Panther Party, soldier in the Black Liberation Army, and current political prisoner sentenced to life in prison for killing a police officer by a implicitly biased jury not of his peers. He is 72 years old and had been held in solitary confinement for over 22 years. He is a supporter of the Black Lives Matter movement and recovering radiation treatment of prostate cancer. Considering that many of the current political prisoners who struggled against the same systemic racist polices including police terrorism and that current activists face a similar fate for their activities today, it is essential that the current movement make freeing political prisoners part of any policy demands. Download PodcastTune in for an hour of news, information and commentary on the issue of political prisoners being held by the USA. Tonight our guest speaker will be attorney, activist and radio broadcaster Efia Nwangaza who will be joining us to discuss the need to keep pressure on the United States government to release COINTELPRO political prisoners particularly those formations like the Black Panther Party which was specifically named and targeted by the FBI because of their their political and social activities in the black community. According to the political prisoner human rights group Jericho Movement, COINTELPRO represents a part of American history that we would all like to forget. However, to forget is to repeat. Unfortunately, dozens of women and men are still incarcerated upwards of 40 years as a direct result of this heinous program. Not only did COINTELPRO seek to defame, neutralize, discredit, and destroy the more militant organizations of that day, viz. the Black Panther Party, Republic of New Afrika, Nation of Islam, American Indian Movement, anti-war, socialist and communist organizations; but it also targeted anyone who stood up against racism and oppression, and who challenged federal and state government to correct these ills and change its policies. Download PodcastTune in for an hour of information and news on political prisoners held by the US government. Unfortunately we will be focusing on the recent assassination of political prisoner Hugo Pinell who was murdered after finally getting out of solitary confinement where he spent 46 years. San Francisco Bayview writes, Hugo Pinell, affectionately known as Yogi Bear, was assassinated Aug. 12. The news sparked a victory celebration by prison guards on social media: “May he rot in hell” and “Good riddens” (sic), they typed. Yogi was the only member of the San Quentin 6 still in prison, and his role in the events of Aug. 21, 1971, the day George Jackson was assassinated, has earned the guards' incessant enmity ever since. There appears that prison gangs played a role in Mr. Pinell's murder. We will be joined by Robert Weide who is an assistant professor of Sociology at Cal State Los Angeles with subfield specializations in criminology, urban studies and racial and ethnic relations. He is currently working on two books based on his dissertation research while a student at NYU. Robert's first book will be about inter-racial gang conflict between Black and Latino street gangs in Los Angeles County. His second book will be about historical and contemporary conflict between racialized inmate factions in carceral settings in California. We will also be joined by Ernest Sheperd (Big Ern) who is a life time supporter of Yogi Pinell. They shared memories in prison together, struggled together and fought oppression together. Big Ern got out of prison but stayed in contact with Yogi and has personal letters where they discussed politics, mass incarceration and the ongoing struggle. Big Ern has a letter he recieved right before the assassination of Yogi. He has a lot to say about his fallen Comrade. Download PodcastTune in for an hour of news, information and conversation around the issue of political prisoners and prisoners of war.Tonight we will examine the case of Simón Trinidad (born July 30, 1950) is the alias of Juvenal Ovidio Ricardo Palmera Pineda. Trinidad is a high level member of The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia—People's Army whom the United States government tried to frame on drug trafficking charges which failed but was able to convict him a kidnapping that he was not involved in that allegedly occurred in another country."For the past seven years, he has been a resident of the U.S. Penitentiary Administrative Maximum, better known as ADX. In the highest-security prison in North America, Trinidad is serving a sixty-year sentence for “conspiracy to commit hostage-taking,” based on a kidnapping that occurred on another continent — and without, his attorneys insist, any direct involvement on his part." - ALAN PRENDERGASTLets discuss the audacity of the US government bringing drug trafficking charges against Simón Trinidad while its agents partied with prostitutes in Colombia as well as cutting deals with the Mexican Sinoloa cartel. The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia—People's Army is currently involved in peace negotiations sponsored in Cuba which is celebrating its 56th year of independence from the brutal rule of puppet tyrants controlled by the West. Two new activist join the ranks of political prisoners in the USA. "Two animal-rights activists have been charged with terrorizing the fur industry during cross-country road trips in which they released about 5,740 mink from farms and vandalized the homes and businesses of industry members, the FBI said Friday. The FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force arrested Joseph Brian Buddenberg, 31, and Nicole Juanita Kissane, 28, both of California, and federal prosecutors charged them with conspiracy to violate the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act." - APThese "terrorism" charges against animal rights activists are another example that US Attorney General Loretta Lynch was being less than truthful when she indicated that there are no terrorism charges that can be brought against Dylan Roof.Black Lives Matter demonstrators interrupted a recent presidential debate to force them to discuss the state sponsored terrorism known as police brutality in the United States. Download PodcastTune in for an hour of news and information related to US held political prisoners and prisoners of war.Late last week it came to light that the prominent psychologists outside of the CIA shielded the program when the CIA's own health professionals repeatedly criticized the torture involved in that agency's post-Sept. 11 so-called interrogation program. As this news comes out, where are the health professionals on the torture of solitary confinement in US prisons? Many political prisoners have been held in solitary confinement for decades although the international community views it as torture. Palestinian Political Prisoner Rasmea Odeh was "sentenced to eighteen months in prison and a fine of one thousand dollars for lying on an immigration and citizenship application." The Federal prosecutor in the case used a confession Rasmea Odeh made in a 1969 “terrorism” conviction in an Israeli military court to prove she lied on her US immigration application by failing to disclose it. Odeh maintains that the confession was false and she only gave it after weeks of torture and sexual assault by the Israelis. She is appealing her conviction and remains free on bond.Artist/activist Brandan "Bmike" Odums recently created a large mural to bring attention to Albert Woodfox's plight. Woodfox is one of the prisoners known as the Angola 3, he is the last remaining member behind bars after being wrongfully convicted of the murder of a prison guard in the 1970s. The three men, Woodfox, Robert King and Herman Wallace started a prison chapter of the Black Panther Party and organized prisoners to stand up for their human rights. Family and advocates want supporters of former Black Panther member Robert Seth Hayes to continue to call in for his health campaign. Get details from our pinned post on our Facebook page Political Prisoner Radio.

We didn’t do any E3 coverage on the blog this year, but seeing as I’m now rooming with former Ani-Gamers Podcast co-host Mitch Dyer (a.k.a. MitchyD), I figured “why not get Mitch on to talk about E3?” Topics include Nintendo goggles, the “difficulty” of adding women to video games, space simulation games both real (No Man’s Sky) and vapor (Infinity), and Smash Bros: MUGEN Edition. Show notes and links after the break. DIRECT DOWNLOAD – RSS Feed – iTunes – Send us Feedback! – More episodes (Runtime: 52 minutes) Opening Song: “Read Or Die Theme” by Taku Iwasaki (our old opening music from back when Mitch co-hosted!) Our guest is IGN Editor and former Ani-Gamers Podcast co-host Mitch Dyer. We talk about E3 2014, the huge annual video game trade show in Los Angeles. Nintendo showed off Super Smash Bros. (new characters: Palutena, Mii Fighter, and Pac-Man), a new open-world Legend of Zelda game, Toad’s Treasure Tracker, and Splatoon. Mitch’s favorite game at the show was Rainbow Six: Siege, the demo of which sparked an outrage about female representation in games. Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed: Unity has four playable co-op characters, all of whom are dudes, prompting MORE gender representation controversy. Mitch liked Battlefield: Hardline, a.k.a. “Battlefield: Cops & Robbers.” No Man’s Sky is a cool procedurally generated space exploration game. Infinity is a still-in-development game (not shown at E3, just something Evan likes) with a similar concept, but a more realistic art style. We loop back and chat about Super Smash Bros. again. In the outro we name drop Star Wars: Battlefront and Mirror’s Edge 2, two games that EA teased but didn’t have full trailers for. Check out Mitch’s stuff at IGN (IGN Arena is his new MOBA podcast) and Rebel FM. Otaku USA Magazine: Evan and Ink wrote articles for the new issue (cover is JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure). Evan’s not flying back to New Jersey for AnimeNEXT, but he did attend FanimeCon 2014 in San Jose, CA. DarlingDaniChan) and cosplay photographer Ben Lam to talk about the con. Topics include Kill la Kill cosplay, Anime Hell, anime triathlons, and the “flipping off Evan” meme. The “Flipping off Evan” meme is a thing that Danika started on Twitter for no good reason. Former Ani-Gamers blogger Elliot Page started a Tumblr compiling the best shots. Evan ran/participated in four panels: Introducing Studio Trigger (slightly updated version of the “‘Trigger’ Warning” Genericon panel), The Beautiful Backgrounds of Anime, The Changing Faces of Anime, and the Crunchyroll Industry Panel. It’s been three months, but we’re back! This time Evan and David talk about anime that’s just old enough that you no longer care enough to be angry about it and video games so old you don’t even remember them anymore. Topics include Super Sonico, Nidhogg, Mother (the original, not the good one or the other good one), Cardcaptor Sakura, Inside Mari, being a tourist in Japan, being a BAD tourist in Japan, Japanese food, and oddly-specific otaku stores. We’re not putting timecodes in the show notes anymore starting with this episode because it takes too long and you guys probably don’t even care about it anyway. DIRECT DOWNLOAD – RSS Feed – iTunes – Send us Feedback! – More episodes (Runtime: 1 hour, 18 minutes) Opening/Ending Song: “Kill Me” by Lame Drivers Super Sonico is an anime about Nitroplus’s mascot character. A few days after Evan said nobody would license it and David said Sentai would… Sentai actually licensed it. (Watch it on Crunchyroll) Nidhogg is a 1-v-1 fencing football game or something like that. (Get it on Steam or the official site) Mother is an weird old NES JRPG. The sequel is Mother 2, better known in English as Earthbound. (You can’t get Mother legally in English, but you can get Earthbound on the Wii U Virtual Console) Cardcaptor Sakura is a famous magical girl manga series by superstar manga artists CLAMP. (Buy it on Amazon or RightStuf) Inside Mari is a creepy bodyswap manga by Flowers of Evil author Shuzo Oshimi (Read it on Crunchyroll) Japan is a country with some pretty cool stuff in it. We both visited it and talked way too much about it. The otaku meccas we discussed were Akihabara (just south of Ueno) and Nakano Broadway (just west of Shinjuku). The pirate-themed shop in Nakano Broadway that we talk about is called Bambool (here’s the official listing on the Nakano Broadway site). It turns out they’re not strictly pirate-themed, so I guess Evan was mistaken. The indie manga shop is Taco Che. Here’s the official site (in Japanese) and Nakano Broadway’s listing for it. For more info on otaku stuff to do in Japan Evan highly recommends Cruising the Anime City: An Otaku Guide to Neo Tokyo, by Patrick Macias (Otaku USA and Crunchyroll News Editor-in-Chief) Otaku USA Magazine: Evan and Ink wrote stuff for the new issue (cover is Attack on Titan). Evan did a review of .hack//Quantum (anime) and Wolfsmund (manga), and Ink did features on Beyond the Boundary, Kamisama Kiss, and (his favorite) Chihayafuru, as well as a review of the ongoing series Samurai Flamenco. Read more stuff from Ink at Fandom Post. He just did a pretty great Paranoia Agent writeup recently. Twitter: Ani-Gamers, Evan, David We didn’t mention it in the show, but we’re going to Genericon in Troy, NY again this year! Evan, Ink, and David will be there alongside Ed Chavez and possibly a couple other online anime folks. Evan’s not staff anymore, but he’s running two panels: “The Beautiful Backgrounds of Anime” (about anime background art) and “‘Trigger’ Warning: Birth of an Anime Studio” (about Studio Trigger, Kill la Kill, Inferno Cop, etc.)
In this episode (our THIRD episode this year — crazy, huh?), Evan, Ink, and David chat about some anime and video games that they’ve been watching and playing, including the Fall 2013 anime season! Topics include failed superheroes, poorly timed apocalypse stories, interminable space brotherhoods, hyperactive tennis clubs, magical glasses, fascist high schools, frog rappers, and the profound pain of game development. [0:17:00] We talk Japanese guests, especially Masao Maruyama, Shinichiro Watanabe (and his new show, Space Dandy), and the Anime Mirai guests. The 2011 Tohoku earthquake charity song that MAPPA did an animation for is called “Hana wa Saku” (“Flowers will Bloom”). The animation isn’t online, but here’s a nice music video for the song with English subs. [0:43:00] A mix of panel discussion and some concerns about lines, crowd control, and some rude staffers. [1:21:00] Final thoughts [1:26:00] Ending Song: “Kill Me” by Lame Drivers
It’s been far too long since we’ve put out a podcast, so here’s a little discussion of the drooleriffic 2012 anime series Mysterious Girlfriend X, featuring Ani-Gamers contributing editor Ink and our two buddies from across the pond, Phillip O’Connor (Ani-Gamers columnist) and former Ani-Gamer Elliot Page. I’m also there to do the intro/outro and ask a few questions, but seeing as I never watched the show, I mostly just listen this time. NOTE: The podcast has some mild spoilers for Mysterious Girlfriend X. If you’re in the area, remember to come out to AnimeNEXT 2013 this weekend in Somerset, NJ to see Ink and I (I’m running two panels: “The Beautiful Backgrounds of Anime” and “Panel Lightning Round”). Anyway, show notes and links are after the break. Enjoy! We talk about AnimeNEXT for a bit. [0:08:45] Ink gets us started talking about Mysterious Girlfriend X. [1:03:32] Evan jumps back in to finish up the show with all our outro stuff. BUY OTAKU USA, PUNKS. Also our outro completely falls apart. This is what happens when you haven’t podcasted in months. [1:09:19] Phillip mentions Otakon 2013. Come see us there too! [1:11:53] Uh oh, Evan just made a horrible promise to the listeners. But you’ll have to listen to find out what it is! [1:13:05] Ending Music: “Kill Me” by Lame Drivers
In this episode, I’m joined by indie comics writer Rachel Pandich and anime blogger/podcaster Kate (a.k.a. Narutaki) from the Reverse Thieves to discuss Western (i.e. non-manga) comics that appeal to anime and manga fans. We also talk about New York Comic Con and Masaaki Yuasa’s Kick-Heart Kickstarter, which is about to hit its deadline TONIGHT (10/30) after reaching its goal a few days early. David and Evan make their long-awaited return to talk about Magic Knight Rayearth, Fruits Basket, Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt, Darker Than Black, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Summer 2012 anime, the Neo Geo Pocket Color, and … Animorphs? This show was recorded LIVE in Evan’s apartment, which means it has approximately 50% better jokes and 70% fewer awkward pauses than a typical episode of the Ani-Gamers Podcast (based on real science). We tried a slightly different, slightly looser format than usual for this episode. Drop us a line at our email address (linked below) if you like it! Show notes and links after the break. DIRECT DOWNLOAD – RSS Feed – iTunes – Send us Feedback! – More episodes (Runtime: 47 minutes) [0:00:00] Syncing with a clap is pretty meaningless when you’re in the same room. [0:00:15] Intro: “Kill Me” by Lame Drivers [0:00:33] Welcome! Our hosts are Ani-Gamers bloggers Evan Minto and David Estrella! [0:01:27] We partnered with Crunchyroll News to cross-post our content. Cool stuff. [0:03:52] “What’cha Been Doing?” Evan starts with his self-education in shojo manga via Magic Knight Rayearth and Fruits Basket. Also Evan keeps talking about how much he loves Mars. [0:13:55] David hasn’t been watching anime from the Summer 2012 season. What this really means is he’s been “barely” watching anime. Evan is the true master of actually not watching anything. Series include Joshiraku and Hyouka. David also hates on Kids on the Slope. [0:20:14] Evan’s watching Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt. [0:28:06] Evan and David are both watching Darker Than Black (David’s already seen it). [0:31:33] Evan is playing Batman: Arkham Asylum, which is pretty OK. [0:33:37] Superhero Comics? Huh? Evan read Avengers: Disassembled in an attempt to introduce himself to Avengers comics. It was… kinda lame and confusing. David read a Hawkeye comic that was extremely purple and also pretty good. Both bought from Aquilonia Comics. [0:36:58] News: The Rose of Versailles anime got licensed! [0:38:42] News: The Wii U has a release date and a bunch of super-weak launch games. Get your Nintendo goggles on! [0:42:01] David bought a Neo Geo Pocket Color from Pastime Legends, which is pretty rad. [0:44:45] News: Genericon dates are out! March 1-3 in Troy, NY! For years we have languished under the oppression of our ANNCast overlords, who refuse to even record a podcast at the East Coast’s largest anime convention, Otakon. So, with the help of our fearless captain Ed Sizemore, an intrepid team of Otakon pirate podcasters — including yours truly — have hijacked the Anime News Network‘s popular podcast to talk about Otakon 2012. Unfortunately the audio recording is one iteration away from Alvin Lucier’s “I am sitting in a room,” but I guess it’s in keeping with the pirate theme. Show notes and links after the break. DIRECT DOWNLOAD – RSS Feed – iTunes – Send us Feedback! – More episodes (Runtime: 43 minutes) [0:00:00] Intro: “Yo Ho (A Pirate’s Life for Me)” [0:00:16] Everybody introduces themselves. First off is Justin Sevakis (@worldofcrap), our captive ANNCast host and the founder of Anime News Network. Then there’s Michael Camacho (@GNitro) and Scott Spaziani (@ScottSpaziani) from Otaku in Review, The Big N (@TheBigN) from Drastic My Anime Blog, Alain Mendez (@hisuiRT) from the Reverse Thieves, Ani-Gamers’ own Evan Minto (@VamptVo), and Daniel Briscoe (@DanielBriscoe) from Eastern Image. Ed Sizemore (@edsizemore) from the Manga Out Loud podcast forgot to introduce himself, but he’s hosting. [0:18:12] We discuss the city of Baltimore and the weather (seriously). [0:21:33] Otakon culture! The infamous Ice Cold Water guy! Memes! [0:30:32] How safe is Baltimore? It has a reputation as a pretty dangerous city. [0:34:44] We talk about nearby restaurants, the huge number of attendees at Otakon, and their effect on the Baltimore economy. [0:41:05] Justin drops some final comments about the con before we close out the show. [0:43:25] Outro: “Yo Ho (A Pirate’s Life for Me)”
Just in time for Otakon 2012, we’ve got a quick little podcast check-in from David Estrella and I. We talk about our Otakon plans as well as what we’ve been watching/reading/playing. This includes the Muv-Luv visual novels, Black Jack (manga), Mars (manga), Bodacious Space Pirates, Spelunky, and The Dark Knight Rises (yeah it’s not anime, manga, or games, but we keep the discussion of it to a minimum). No show notes this time, since I need to pack for Otakon. (Also I apologize in advance for any audio problems I might have missed in my lightning editing session.) Hopefully we’ll see some of our listeners this weekend! DIRECT DOWNLOAD – RSS Feed – iTunes – Send us Feedback! – More episodes(Runtime: 45 minutes)
What? Huh? What’s a podcast? I’m not even sure anymore. But luckily David Estrella is here to help re-discover the true meaning of podcasting in the latest episode of the Ani-Gamers Podcast. Unfortunately, he doesn’t help me remember to introduce myself. Whoops! In this episode, we talk about crying anime girls, genre deconstructions, and spurious voice acting performances as we tackle the hugely popular magical girl anime Puella Magi Madoka Magica. Don’t worry if you haven’t seen the show — we’ve separated our spoiler talk into a separate section of the podcast after the outro song. Everything in the main section is free of Madoka spoilers (though we might slip in some spoilers for older series on occasion). DIRECT DOWNLOAD – RSS Feed – iTunes – Send us Feedback! – More episodes (Runtime: 1 hour, 36 minutes) [0:00:00] Intro: “Kill Me” by Lame Drivers [0:00:17] Podcast-related news and introductions! (Host Evan Minto forgot to introduce himself, like an idiot.) We also talk about iDOLM@STER for a bit since David reviewed it on the site. [0:05:14] Madoka review starts. We decide on not spoiling the series until the end of the show (separated into a post-outro section). [0:09:58] The fan culture around Madoka is incredibly important to an understanding of the show, so we take a good look at the zeitgeist. [0:19:52] There’s a lot of suffering and sadness in Madoka. Which parts worked, and which ones didn’t? [0:23:53] The English dub has some spectacular hits and embarrassing misses. We also describe the fictional life story of Christina Vee. [0:32:35] Madoka is undoubtedly a deconstruction of the magical girl genre, but what does that mean? Does it help or hurt the show? Evan says the word “deconstruction” over and over without really explaining what he’s talking about, so, uh… sorry about that. In this case he’s basically talking about examining and taking apart a genre by looking at the consequences of the fantasies inherent therein. [0:43:04] Shaft and Akiyuki Shinbo are known for their quirky art style. Is it appropriate for Madoka’s ambitious narrative? [1:02:44] We lay down some final thoughts on Puella Magi Madoka Magica. [1:05:35] Leave us a comment! Review us on iTunes! Follow us on Twitter (@AniGamers, @VamptVo, @QX_20XX)! [1:09:38] Outro: “Kill Me” by Lame Drivers [1:09:59] David and Evan spoil the heck out of Madoka Magica as they continue their discussion of the series. Don’t listen past the end of the outro song unless you’ve already seen Madoka or are OK with having major plot twists spoiled. Also, uh, we kinda spoil some stuff from Gurren Lagann and Serial Experiments Lain. Sorry!
I was recently on an episode of the Anime World Order podcast, chatting with Daryl, Gerald, and Clarissa about the big lawsuit between FUNimation and ADV as well as the fine piece of Japanese animation known as Sword for Truth. It was a really fun show, and I want to thank the hosts for having me on. I’ve reposted the episode to our podcast feed, and I plan to continue doing this from now on when our bloggers are guest hosts on podcasts. (I’ve been neglecting to repost guest spots for about two years now…) Of course, if you’re not already listening to the Anime World Order podcast, get on it! They’re a veritable treasure trove of information about anime and manga, and they’re funny to boot. What’s that? SIX MONTHS? Well, if you listen to the Ani-Gamers Podcast, I guess you’re probably used to super-long waits by now. Anyway, we’re back, and we’re starting off the year 2012 with something very timely and totally not recorded in the spring of last year: a review of the 2008 Spice & Wolf anime with Evan, Ink, and THEM Anime Reviews‘ very own Bradley C. Meek. Prepare for economics, wolf girls, and infuriating moé shepherds. That, plus a few mild spoilers, but there honestly isn’t much worth spoiling in this show. (Check the show notes for timecodes if you’re really spoiler-phobic.) We’re also trying out some new intro and outro music, so we would appreciate some feedback on those from our listeners. DIRECT DOWNLOAD – RSS Feed – iTunes – Send us Feedback! – More episodes (Runtime: 52 minutes) [00:00] Evan introduces this super-old podcast. [01:08] Intro: “Kill Me” by Lame Drivers [01:23] Let’s meet our guests! [01:53] The review begins with a summary of the setting and characters of Spice & Wolf, and some of our general impressions. [11:17] We start by talking about the sly wolf goddess Holo. [16:27] Next up is our straight-man protagonist, the trader Kraft Craft Lawrence. [29:35] Evan gets super-angry about Nora, the shy shepherd girl. [30:22] Season one spoilers start here. [31:27] Evan likes to see people die. Also, more spoilers. [37:27] Incredibly mild spoilers about the final scene in season one. [37:24] The spoilers are over now. You can uncover your ears, you babies. [39:16] We talk about the animation, background art, and some of the music in Spice & Wolf. [44:09] Final thoughts [48:08] “The awkward ending.” Twitter: @AniGamers, @VamptVo, @AnimatedInk (Ink has split his accounts between poetry and anime since this podcast was recorded), and @BradleyCMeek. [51:10] Outro: “Kill Me” by Lame Drivers [51:37] We read food nicknames from Parks & Recreation‘s Tom Haverford.
