Kara talks to Theo Baker, a Stanford University student journalist and the youngest-ever George Polk Award winner, about his new book, "How to Rule the World." In it, Baker unpacks his investigation into former Stanford president, Marc Tessier-Lavigne over research misconduct in labs he oversaw. He breaks down how the university reacted and what it says about power at Stanford and in the Valley Theo reveals the “Stanford inside Stanford” and the university's lucrative, no-boundaries relationship with Silicon Valley's tech entrepreneurs and venture capitalists. He and Kara discuss secret power networks, “builders” versus “wantapreneurs” and whether Stanford is a university or, as one professor put it, an “incubator with dorms.” Plus: Theo weighs in on the backlash against AI among young people. In 2025, New Jersey's favorite hideously deformed creature of superhuman size and strength returned — twice. Writer/director Macon Blair's big-budget reimagining, The Toxic Avenger (2023), finally received a wide theatrical release in August 2025. Peter Dinklage voices Winston, a terminally ill janitor at a corrupt pharmaceutical company who falls into a vat of toxic chemicals and emerges as Toxie — a mop-wielding mutant vigilante. Kevin Bacon stars as the company's scheming CEO and Elijah Wood as his security-minded brother, in a film that wraps its splatter comedy around themes of healthcare, corporate greed, and unlikely heroism. Also in 2025, Troma's own Andrew L. Miller and Adam Peltier reconstructed The Toxic Avenger Part II (1989) and Part III (1989) into the single film they were always meant to be. Titled Mr. Melvin, the 127-minute cut restores the narrative logic Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz originally intended  — following Toxie's post-heroic depression, a manipulated journey to Japan, and a Faustian deal with Apocalypse Inc. that turns him into a corporate sellout before the ultimate confrontation with the Devil himself.Mike talks with Rob St. Mary about both films, and the episode includes interviews with Troma co-founder Lloyd Kaufman and Mr. Melvin co-producer and co-editor Andrew L. Keanu Reeves stars as Kevin Lomax, a small town defense lawyer with an impressive undefeated winning streak. He's scouted by Al Pacino as John Milton, the head of an acclaimed New York City law firm, who wants to change Lomax's life by adding him to the roster. Eagle-eared viewers may recognize the name John Milton as a reference to the author of legendary Bible fanfiction Paradise Lost. This might be your first indication that Pacino's character is the devil himself, that Reeves's character is about to make a Faustian bargain, and that the legal system is about to be used as an allegory for Christian morality. This is the most 1990s trope imaginable, an era when filmmakers were obsessed with elevating the mundane by showing it as a backdrop between the battle between angels and demons. Another distinctly 1990s decadence is needing the movie to be "smart, sexy, funny" — when THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE does rarely jump the shark into groan-inducing campiness, it's when the film attempts to flatter the viewer's sense of sophistication. However it's still a welcome nostalgic departure from mainstream movies nowadays that openly market themselves as slop from a trough for the lowest bidder. But it's the smart writing and impressive production design that makes THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE's heavy handed tropes and conservative morality feel delightfully predictable instead of tediously formulaic. Andrew Adams returns to The Dark Mind Podcast to discuss his new Cemetery Dance Publications novel, Crossroads, Inc.The book is set in the dying backwoods town of Glanton, where the air is toxic, the water is undrinkable, and the people have been forgotten. When a life insurance company called Crossroads, Inc. rolls into town offering cash advances on policies repaid in severed body parts, what begins as desperation quickly becomes compliance, addiction, and the normalization of the unthinkable. At the center of the story is thirteen year old Hannah Cassady, the skeptic of her family and the one who sees the lie before the adults do.At the center of the company is Samuel Sterling, a smooth talking CEO in a purple suit with pearly white veneers who never needs to raise his voice to get what he wants.Andrew and Vincent dig into the seed of the premise, the Faustian roots of the title, and the way the novel layers body horror on top of addiction, economic collapse, and manufactured hope. They talk about Hannah as the moral compass of the story, the Cassady siblings as a single unit splintering under pressure, and the slow normalization of mutilation inside a community that has run out of options. They also get into the real world echoes behind the brew, the opiate crisis, legalized vice, and the way desperate people respond to anyone who finally acknowledges their suffering.Beyond the book, Andrew opens up about his path from welder and aerospace engineer to writing sixteen books in under four years, the grind of the indie horror world, and what it meant to land at Cemetery Dance Publications. He talks about his literary influences from Cormac McCarthy and A Clockwork Orange to Hunter S. Thompson and Ronald Malfi, his friendships with writers like Duncan Ralston, Emma E. Murray, and Jyl Glenn, and the daily reality of writing at night around a full time job and a family. This is a conversation about bodies as currency, hope as a trap, and the quiet horror of watching a town talk itself into giving up a piece of itself one finger at a time.Website: https://www.symposiumofthereaper.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/andrew_adams_author/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@andrew_adams_authorThreads: https://www.threads.net/@andrew_adams_authorGoodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/567299.Andrew_AdamsBuy Crossroads, Inc. from Cemetery Dance Publications: https://www.cemeterydance.com/CrossroadsInc.htmlCrossroads, Inc. on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0GPYZJYSL/Andrew Adams books on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=Andrew+Adams+horror&i=stripbooksAndrew Adams on Audible: https://www.audible.com/author/Andrew-Adams/B0BYD1LQXYAndrew Adams on Barnes and Noble: https://www.barnesandnoble.com/s/andrew+adams+horrorAndrew Adams on Godless: https://godless.com/products/andrew-adamsSupport The Dark Mind Podcast: https://www.patreon.com/c/thedarkmindpodcast

What would you trade for the perfect life? Fame? Love? Power? And more importantly… who's writing the contract? This week on Code Noir, CJ and Jamaal dive into Bedazzled (2000) — the glossy, chaotic, and surprisingly philosophical remake of the 1967 British cult classic. Starring Brendan Fraser and Elizabeth Hurley as a devil who knows exactly what you want before you do, the film takes the classic Faustian bargain and drags it straight into the early internet age.We break down the seven wishes, the twisted outcomes, and what they reveal about ego, identity, and the illusion of control in a world obsessed with self-reinvention. From its roots in Swinging London satire to its Y2K transformation into a slick Hollywood morality tale, Bedazzled becomes more than just a comedy — it's a mirror of a culture learning to sell itself.Along the way, we explore:The evolution of the Devil from sardonic trickster to seductive brandWhy every wish fails (and what that says about us)Early 2000s obsession with image, success, and “having it all”Whether Elliot is the problem… or just the symptomBecause in the end, Bedazzled isn't really about the Devil. It's about us — and the deals we keep making with ourselves. No pitchfork required.

Fantasy has been tied up in the right from the start, in the LOTR we see a Catholic Spenglerian world in constant decline from the days of yore, with the desire to innovate and the Faustian impulse seen as the essence of evil. It's a nostalgic backwards looking genre, and it's enduring popularity on the right is hardly a surprise, as we can see in the naming of various flashy new corporations of the evil empire. Fantasy has now largely gone woke, as essentially all fiction has, but right wing fandoms of liberal works of fantasy are also very common. Stefan, Kuba and Quinn discuss this and more. On the Evolving Wellness Podcast, host Sarah interviews board-certified psychiatrist Dr. Josef Dering, who previously worked in the pharmaceutical industry and as an FDA medical officer in psychiatry drug safety. He explains why he now believes psychiatric medications don't work for most conditions and describes how time-pressured, checklist-based care and “chemical imbalance” narratives lead to escalating drug cocktails without addressing root causes. He warns that benzodiazepines may help short term but can worsen anxiety over time, cause interdose withdrawal, degrade sleep architecture, and impair concentration, making them a “Faustian bargain,” and stresses slow, supervised tapering due to difficult withdrawal. Dering outlines non-drug approaches targeting body, mind, and “soul” (health behaviors, skills-based therapies, relationships, and meaning). He also argues high-potency THC cannabis increases psychosis risk and may lead to long recoveries and misdiagnosis.Connect withj Dr Josef - https://www.youtube.com/@taperclinichttps://www.instagram.com/drjosefwittdoerring/ _________Sponsored By:→ Bon Charge | Go to https://boncharge.com/products/demi-red-light-device?rfsn=8108115.26608d & use code SARAHKLEINER for 15% off storewide.→ VivaRays | This episode is sponsored by VivaRays - VivaRays Blue - code YOGI https://vivarays.com/ → Organifi | For an exclusive offer, go to https://www.organifi.com/SARAHK for 20% off your order._________Timestamp:00:00 Benzos Quick Relief00:55 Episode Setup Disclaimer02:29 Podcast Intro Housekeeping03:42 Meet Dr Dering04:30 Why He Questions Meds07:19 FDA Safety Reality Check08:44 Host Story Benzos12:16 Sponsor Red Light14:29 Benzos Faustian Bargain15:48 Body Mind Soul Framework21:42 Sponsor Blue Blockers23:09 Motivation Rock Bottom26:30 Medical Trust Broken29:12 Suicidality on Med Cocktails31:23 Withdrawal Trap and Tapering34:20 PR Narrative Around Antidepressants36:22 Meds and Mass Violence Debate39:27 Gender Ideology in Schools42:57 Cannabis Mental Health Risks44:26 THC Potency and Psychosis Data48:54 Paranoia as Warning Sign51:34 Safe Tapering and Final Advice——— This video is not medical advice & as a supporter to you and your health journey - I encourage you to monitor your labs and work with a professional!________________________________________Get all my free guides and product recommendations to get started on your journey!https://www.sarahkleinerwellness.com/all-free-resourcesCheck out all my courses to understand how to improve your mitochondrial health & experience long lasting health! Somewhere in the shadows, someone is keeping records. And when the bill comes due, it won't be paid in dollars. In this chilling tale of Faustian horror from Michael Marks, the line between healer and harvester begins to blur. Debt collectors speak in pleasant tones. Physicians abide by rules you were never meant to understand. And the phrase “First do no harm” takes on a meaning far more unsettling than you'd expect. Second Breakfast with Cam & Maggie

Check out Cam's latest novel / audio drama here! Iron Lung is a staggering work of indie horror, but we would argue that it's also an unconventional and hyper ambitious Faust fable, restaging the whole drama of Marlowe's classic deal-with-the-devil play inside a claustrophobic submarine stained with blood. In this episode, we're mapping Marlowe's characters onto Markiplier's minimalistic ensemble, laying out the terms of Simon's remixed Faustian bargain, and hunting for his oft-conjured but seldom seen Mephistopheles. It's Lynchian! It's Lovecraftian! It's positively Faustian! And here's the kicker, the film's ending takes on a whole new level of meaning and symbolism when interpreted through this lens! Let's dive into it! LINKS: Patreon, YouTube, Spotify, Instagram Feedback & Theories: secondbreakfastpod@gmail.com

Hello! And welcome to season 15 of the Dana Gould Hour Podcast. Fasten your enthusiasm harness, we are blasting off again. Mark Malkoff has a new book entitled Love, Johnny Carson: One Obsessive Fan's Journey To Find The Genius Behind The Legend. Johnny Carson is so larger than life now it's important to sometimes take a step back and appreciate his accomplishment. Unlike today, when there are 8,000 channels, and three network late night talk shows. Johnny Carson hosted The Tonight Show when there were around ten channels total and one, count 'em, one late night talk show, which he hosted for 30 years. He interviewed over 25,000 guests, navigated America's cultural conversation from President Kennedy through President Clinton. Mark's book covers the debuts of then-unknown comedians who are now household names. He talks about Johnny's feuds, and he had some. There were periods of time when William Shatner and Orson Welles were banned from the show. But Mark's book is very affectionate. It's honest without being exploitive. It dishes a lot of dirt but it's never bitchy, I can't recommend it enough. Mark Malkoff. Right here. In the human flesh.  The second interview is with two dudes who have written extensively about two films from a very special time in American cinema-going. Back in the 70's, you see, before cable and VHS tapes and streaming, if you wanted to see a movie, you had to wait and catch it on television. And if you wanted to see it uncut, you had to find it playing in a movie theater. And that's it. Because of this, more people went to more movies more often. And, since this was before multiplexes, movie theaters were more random. You didn't have 16 screens in one building. You had sixteen different movie theaters scattered around town.  John Gaspar has written a book about a very strange event at one such theater in one of my favorite cities in the goddamn world, and yours too, Minneapolis, Minnesota. The book is called Held Over: Harold And Maude At The Westgate Theater and it tells the story of Hal Ashby's 1971 black comedy Harold and Maude, that starred Ruth Gordon and Bud Cort, that ran for two years at the Westgate in the Minneapolis suburb of Edina. The film ran for so long, the neighbors protested, demanding a new movie! It's a terrific book about what movie going in America used to be like, before the multiplexes took over. John and I are joined by Ari Kahan, who is the archivist of The Swan Archives, which is I can best describe as a labyrinthine database covering all things pertaining to 1974's Brian DePalma cult classic, Phantom Of The Paradise. Don't know too much about Phantom Of The Paradise you say? No worries, you will by the time we get there, True Tales From Weirdsville takes us on a deep dive inside that mid 70's glam-rock Faustian gem, Phantom Of The Paradise.

Everyone is trying to "manifest" their dream life, but few realize they are playing with a dangerous, satanic inversion of the truth. While the spiritual mechanisms behind manifestation are real, using them to shape reality to your own will is a Faustian bargain. In this message, we uncover why the New Age "Law of Attraction" fails and how to move into the authentic power of Biblical Meditation. The Truth: The Enemy wants you to believe you are the source of your own reality. But true "manifestation" isn't about getting what you want—it's about conceiving what God has already said into your physical experience. It is the difference between having the medicine in the cabinet and actually getting it into your bloodstream. In this message, we dive into: The Satanic Inversion: Why the New Age hijacks universal spiritual laws and the price you pay for using them outside of God's authority. The Mechanics of the Spirit: How "Hagah" (Biblical Meditation) moves the Word from your head to your heart. Holy Imagination vs. Fantasy: Using "Hope" as a spiritual blueprint to see your promise before it arrives. Identity Shift: Why God called Gideon a "Mighty Man of Valor" while he was still hiding in a winepress (Judges 6). The Abraham Method: Learning to "call those things which be not as though they were" (Romans 4:17). Scripture References: Joshua 1:8 – The key to true prosperity and success. Romans 12:2 – Do not be conformed to this world (or its customs), but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Isaiah 26:3 – Keeping your mind stayed on Him for perfect peace. Romans 4:17 – Calling into existence the promises God has already spoken. Proverbs 4:20-22 – God's Word as life and health (medicine) to all our flesh. When the "day of adversity" comes and your boat feels like it's sinking, a "vibration" won't save you. Only the Word of God hidden in your heart will give you the victory.

In Episode 147 of Badlands Story Hour, Chris Paul and Burning Bright unpack Multiplicity, the Harold Ramis–directed film starring Michael Keaton, through a philosophical and cultural lens. The conversation explores identity, fractured priorities, and the illusion that productivity and time can solve deeper internal disorder. Using the film's cloning premise as a metaphor, the hosts examine modern rat-race culture, false solutions offered by technology, and the temptation to outsource responsibility, purpose, and even selfhood. Themes of Faustian bargains, artificial intelligence, autonomy, and the spiritual cost of chasing efficiency over meaning are woven throughout the discussion, alongside reflections on masculinity, family, work, and personal sovereignty. The episode connects the film's humor to serious questions about control, self mastery, and the danger of multiplying outward solutions without addressing the core of who we are.

After nearly a decade away from writing novels, Joe Hill returned this year with King Sorrow, a bold, ferocious, genre-blurring epic that fuses horror, high fantasy, dark academia, rare books, and a Faustian bargain with devastating consequences. In this conversation, Joe joins David Headley to talk about writing a 900-page novel that never lets up, why big books have to move fast, and how six friends summoning a dragon becomes a story about power, complicity, and the stories we choose to live with. Along the way, they explore books bound in human skin, libraries as battlegrounds, the moral cost of comfort, and why genre labels matter far less than telling a great story. Plus, Joe reveals a major exclusive… only on Confessions of a Book Collector.
