A Friday hang that took a turn. Tomer Strolight, Suze, Swan Private's Alec and Matt, then Brandon Quittem and Dirty Coin director Alana. The surprise came from the audience: an anonymous 40-year IMF and central-bank veteran, @UnseenFinance.Brady opened on a viral Instagram video, described on air and unverified at air time: Meta AI's suggested questions on a mother's post surfaced her child's name, her location and a deleted photo. "Breadcrumbs for stalkers laid out nice and neat."Tomer called it the new reality and a double-edged sword: the panopticon that erodes privacy also finds a missing child after an Amber Alert. Every recorded word now has "perfect recall," which he called "a metaphysical change in how reality works."Brady's frame: decades of data on a public network, then phones with microphones and cameras, then AI to stitch it together. "Orwell was right. Maybe it didn't play out exactly the same way, but we all opted into it."Suze went further: worse than Orwell, who never predicted programmable money. Her point was aggregation, a phone number, an employer, a public record: "once data gets copied, leaked, sold and ends up on the dark web, it is impossible to claw back."⭐ The surprise guest: 40 years across the IMF, development banks and central banks, "what often Bitcoiners call the enemy." KYC scope creep brought him to Bitcoin: rules for big criminals now "attacking single mothers. How dare you brought in $300?"Alana argued most people don't value privacy. Her rule, from a Spanish saying: closed mouths, flies don't fly in. Her forecast: "it's going to get worse before it gets worse," then regulation arrives "for the safety of the children."⭐ Tomer pushed back on the doom: technology is unstoppable, so use it morally and defend yourself with it. Embracing coal led to gas and electricity; fearing nuclear for 70 to 80 years left the world with worse energy and worse governments.⭐⭐ Suze asked the ex-IMF guest whether institutions understand the surveillance they build. His answer: the people at the top are excellent and well-intentioned; the damage happens in the "telephone game" downward, ending with a bank clerk blocking a payment from fear.Suze quoted Carstens on CBDC control; the guest said central banks "100%" believe CBDCs expand access and reduce poverty. Brady disagreed: security, poverty and children are window dressing; the Patriot Act and KYC/AML show how narrow mandates become mass surveillance.Brady's hope story: Snowden broke his faith in government; Bitcoin and the cypherpunks restored it. His ask now: Bitcoiners should learn open-weight AI models the way they learned nodes and wallets, as personal defence against deep fakes and scrapers.⭐ Brandon brought Kevin Kelly's What Technology Wants: technology is an extension of evolution and every technology carries a bias. A CBDC wants control and reduced privacy; Bitcoin wants individual sovereignty. One panelist's summary: Promethean versus Faustian technology.Brandon raised Gladstein's structural-adjustment critique. From the inside, the guest said, "that's not true": governments come to the IMF, then blame it for the conditions while "the IMF sits back and takes that black eye." Brandon: bad outcomes, bad program.Tomer's reconciliation: there is no parallel universe to test the counterfactual, so fallible people with incentives argue over outcomes. Technology's biases compound objectively; human biases compound with incentives. Tomorrow, America will celebrate its birth. But the decisive moment, even the real birth of modern America, argues Alexander Mikaberidze in his new book The Louisiana Purchase: The Grand Bargain and the Making of America, may not have been 1776 at all. It was 1803, the year of the Louisiana Purchase. The year Thomas Jefferson bought the future from Napoleon Bonaparte. This was the moment the young American republic doubled its size in a single transaction, absorbed the heart of a continent and set itself on the path to becoming a global superpower. The numbers associated with the Louisiana Purchase are staggering. 828,000 square miles. Thirteen states. Fifteen million dollars — four cents an acre, so the mythology tells us. But Mikaberidze reminds us that the deal Jefferson signed did not actually grant the United States the land. Instead, it merely authorised the republic to negotiate the acquisition of land still owned by Native Americans. So it became the founding event of the US-Indian Treaty System that produced over 200 Native American cessions between 1804 and 1970, and cost the Republic billions of dollars. The Louisiana Purchase was America's grand Faustian bargain. It was a deal that not only enabled America's eventual rise as a 20th century superpower, but also the expansion of slavery, the destruction of Native peoples, and the 19th century imperial reach of the Monroe Doctrine. So forget 1776 and save the fireworks to remember 1803. And celebrate with croissants rather than hot dogs. Without Napoleon Bonaparte's generosity, the United States might be just another regional power like France. Five Takeaways • The Louisiana Purchase: Arguably the Decisive Moment in American History: Mikaberidze's opening argument: if you had to pick the single most important moment in American history, 1803 has a stronger claim than 1776. Independence established the republic. The Louisiana Purchase made it a continental power. 828,000 square miles. Thirteen states. The heart of the continent. Securing the Mississippi for American commerce. Laying the groundwork for the Monroe Doctrine, Manifest Destiny, and America's eventual emergence as a global superpower. The revolution created the nation. The purchase created its destiny. • Four Cents an Acre? The Real Price Was Billions: The famous number: $15 million, or four cents an acre. The less famous fact: the agreement Jefferson signed did not grant the United States the land. It merely authorised the republic to negotiate the acquisition of the land, which was still owned by Native Americans. The Louisiana Purchase was the founding event of the US-Indian Treaty System — which produced over 200 Native American cessions between 1804 and 1970, and cost the United States not $15 million but billions of dollars. What appeared to be the greatest real estate deal in history was actually an authorisation to conduct the most expensive series of land negotiations in history. • The Grand Faustian Bargain: Slavery, Native Peoples, and the Monroe Doctrine: Andrew's formulation — the Grand Faustian Bargain, the deal with the devil — is one Mikaberidze accepts. The purchase did three things simultaneously: it made America a continental power and a future superpower; it enabled the expansion of slavery into the vast new territory (the Missouri crisis of 1820 was a direct consequence); and it set in motion the dispossession of Native peoples at a scale and speed that would otherwise have been impossible. The Monroe Doctrine — America's declaration that the Western Hemisphere was its sphere of influence — would not have been conceivable without the continental reach the purchase provided. • Napoleon's Bad Weather: The Contingency That Made America: The counterfactual at the heart of Mikaberidze's book: in October 1802, Napoleon had 4,000 veteran French troops ready to sail for New Orleans. The bad weather delayed them. Then it was too late — war with Britain was coming, and Napoleon decided to sell. If those troops had arrived, Mikaberidze argues, France might have retained effective control of southern Louisiana, cultivated alliances with Native nations (as it historically had), and used those alliances to constrain American expansion inland. Without the Louisiana hinterland, the American republic might have been a prosperous but regionally limited power, strong in New England and the Northeast but denied the continental reach that made it a superpower. • Croissants in Kansas, Tacos in Oklahoma: The Counterfactual Continents: Andrew's closing question: what would July 4 look like in Kansas and Oklahoma if the purchase hadn't happened? Mikaberidze's answer: French Louisiana, Spanish Texas, and Native-controlled hinterlands are all in play. The people of Kansas might indeed be celebrating with croissants rather than hot dogs. Mikaberidze adds: or tacos. Almost certainly more tacos and moles, given the Spanish and ultimately Mexican influence that would have prevailed across most of the continent. The American empire of liberty, in this alternative timeline, stops somewhere in the middle of what is now Missouri. Keanu Reeves stars as Kevin Lomax, a small town defense lawyer with an impressive undefeated winning streak. He's scouted by Al Pacino as John Milton, the head of an acclaimed New York City law firm, who wants to change Lomax's life by adding him to the roster. Eagle-eared viewers may recognize the name John Milton as a reference to the author of legendary Bible fanfiction Paradise Lost. This might be your first indication that Pacino's character is the devil himself, that Reeves's character is about to make a Faustian bargain, and that the legal system is about to be used as an allegory for Christian morality. This is the most 1990s trope imaginable, an era when filmmakers were obsessed with elevating the mundane by showing it as a backdrop between the battle between angels and demons. Another distinctly 1990s decadence is needing the movie to be "smart, sexy, funny" — when THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE does rarely jump the shark into groan-inducing campiness, it's when the film attempts to flatter the viewer's sense of sophistication. However it's still a welcome nostalgic departure from mainstream movies nowadays that openly market themselves as slop from a trough for the lowest bidder. But it's the smart writing and impressive production design that makes THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE's heavy handed tropes and conservative morality feel delightfully predictable instead of tediously formulaic. Mark Malkoff has a new book entitled Love, Johnny Carson: One Obsessive Fan's Journey To Find The Genius Behind The Legend. Johnny Carson is so larger than life now it's important to sometimes take a step back and appreciate his accomplishment. Unlike today, when there are 8,000 channels, and three network late night talk shows. Johnny Carson hosted The Tonight Show when there were around ten channels total and one, count 'em, one late night talk show, which he hosted for 30 years. He interviewed over 25,000 guests, navigated America's cultural conversation from President Kennedy through President Clinton. Mark's book covers the debuts of then-unknown comedians who are now household names. He talks about Johnny's feuds, and he had some. There were periods of time when William Shatner and Orson Welles were banned from the show. But Mark's book is very affectionate. It's honest without being exploitive. It dishes a lot of dirt but it's never bitchy, I can't recommend it enough. Mark Malkoff. Right here. In the human flesh. The second interview is with two dudes who have written extensively about two films from a very special time in American cinema-going. Back in the 70's, you see, before cable and VHS tapes and streaming, if you wanted to see a movie, you had to wait and catch it on television. And if you wanted to see it uncut, you had to find it playing in a movie theater. And that's it. Because of this, more people went to more movies more often. And, since this was before multiplexes, movie theaters were more random. You didn't have 16 screens in one building. You had sixteen different movie theaters scattered around town. John Gaspar has written a book about a very strange event at one such theater in one of my favorite cities in the goddamn world, and yours too, Minneapolis, Minnesota. The book is called Held Over: Harold And Maude At The Westgate Theater and it tells the story of Hal Ashby's 1971 black comedy Harold and Maude, that starred Ruth Gordon and Bud Cort, that ran for two years at the Westgate in the Minneapolis suburb of Edina. The film ran for so long, the neighbors protested, demanding a new movie! It's a terrific book about what movie going in America used to be like, before the multiplexes took over. John and I are joined by Ari Kahan, who is the archivist of The Swan Archives, which is I can best describe as a labyrinthine database covering all things pertaining to 1974's Brian DePalma cult classic, Phantom Of The Paradise.
