Hollywood isn't performing as well at home or abroad. Is it losing its cultural dominance to China's burgeoning film industry? ‘Survive until 2025' was the mantra that got Hollywood through the past five years of lockdown, streaming wars, and franchise fatigue. And while summer films like Lilo & Stitch, Superman, and Mission Impossible: Final Reckoning made critical and box office impact… on the whole, it still doesn't compare to pre-2020 levels. And even more curious, the international box office - specifically in China - has declined over the years as well. At the same time, the highest grossing animated film of all time hit theaters this year… in China. Ne Zha 2 has dominated the global box office and with Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba and K-Pop: Demon Hunters also breaking records, Brittany had to ask: What does this say about Hollywood's global influence and how have audience appetites changed since 2020? Staff writer at The Atlantic, Shirley Li, joins the show to answer those questions and more.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

Demon Slayer is back in theaters with its second original movie after the record-breaking success of 2020's Mugen Train, and the latest installment – Part I of the planned Infinity Castle trilogy, adapting the final arc of Gotouge Koyoharu's manga – is proving every bit as popular, breaking box office records in Japan and now in America. That's for good reason: Infinity Castle is an incredible film, depicting three major battles across its 155-minute runtime, and executing on all of it at the same insanely high level we've come to expect from ufotable over the years. This is a film with some of the most jaw-dropping animated spectacle you'll ever see in a theater, but as always, its heart is with the characters, their backstories, and their interiority, and this film's focus on the villain Akaza proves to be some of the most effective material in the life of the entire series. We talk about all of it and more, including the terrific vocal performances and killer soundtrack, as Kimetsu no Yaiba truly kicks off the beginning of the end. Enjoy! Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Infinity Castle (Japanese: 劇場版「鬼滅の刃」無限城編, Hepburn: Gekijō-ban Kimetsu no Yaiba: Mugen Jō-hen) is a 2025 Japanese animated dark fantasy action film based on the "Infinity Castle" arc of the 2016–20 manga series Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba by Koyoharu Gotouge. It is a direct sequel to the fourth season of the anime television series as well as the manga fourth, fifth, and sixth adaptations, following the film Mugen Train (2020) and the feature-length compilations To the Swordsmith Village (2023) and To the Hashira Training (2024). It is directed by Haruo Sotozaki, produced by Ufotable, and written by the studio's staff members.Unlike the Swordsmith Village and Hashira Training adaptations, which are compilation films, Infinity Castle is a feature-length multi-film adaptation due to the arc's content and dramatic pacing, similarly to Mugen Train. It is the first film of a trilogy announced in June 2024, immediately following the airing of the fourth season's finale.[4]Officially titled Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Infinity Castle – Part 1: Akaza Returns, it was released in Japan on July 18, 2025, by Aniplex and Toho. It was released by Crunchyroll through Sony Pictures Releasing in select Asian countries in August, before releasing in all other territories the following month. The film broke several box office records and grossed $386 million worldwide. It became the fourth highest-grossing Japanese film worldwide, the highest-grossing film of 2025 in Japan, and the third highest-grossing film in the country's history. The film received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised its action sequences, visuals, and engaging story, although some noted pacing issues. After recovering from Kagaya Ubuyashiki's trap and subduing Tamayo, Muzan Kibutsuji retreats into his dimensional stronghold, the Infinity Castle, and traps the Demon Slayer Corps inside.[a] The Demon Slayers are separated and begin battling numerous powerful demons as they search for Muzan. Kagaya's son Kiriya and daughters Kuina and Kanata lead the operation by mapping the Infinity Castle with the Kasugai crows and locating its inhabitants, with former Hashiras Tengen Uzui and Shinjuro Rengoku standing guard.PlotPart 1: Akaza Returns

Izzy also shares stories about his truly bizarre circle of friends and the ridiculous antics that seem to follow them around. With the anime season wrapping up, he drops his short list of standouts (and begs everyone to keep watching Yaiba). Today on Too Opinionated, we chat with actress Abby Trott! After getting her start in voiceover while living in Japan, Trott has made a name for herself in the anime genre. She is perhaps best known as the English dub voice of the female lead Nezuko Kamado in the wildly popular series Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. After her family is murdered by the demon Muzan Kibutsuji and Nezuko is turned into a demon herself, her only surviving brother Tanjiro sets off on a mission to turn his sister back into a human. Throughout the journey, Nezuko's incredible strength and resilience becomes clear as she is able to resist the temptation of human blood and step out into the sunlight. Her special abilities draw the attention of Muzan, who is determined to get Nezuko and acquire her unique power for himself. The series is streaming now on Hulu, Netflix and Crunchyroll. In addition, she reprised her fan-favorite role in the box office hit film Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - The Movie: Mugen Train, which is available now on Crunchyroll. Trott can also be heard as the lead in the popular Netflix series DanDaDan. She voices Momo Ayase, a no-nonsense high schooler who meets Ken Takakura, another student at her school who is obsessed with the occult and aliens. They challenge each others' beliefs, and in the process they encounter both ghosts and aliens, awakening Momo's psychic powers and getting Ken (now nicknamed Okarun) possessed in the process which leads to some ridiculous paranormal encounters. Season 2 is set to premiere in July 2025. Other voiceover credits include: Nickelodeon's All-Star Brawl, Carmen Sandiego, X-Men ‘97, My Love Story with Yamada-kun at Lv999, Barbie Mysteries: The Great Horse Chase, Rock Paper, Scissors, Gamera: Rebirth, The Casagrandes, The Seven Deadly Sins and The Croods: Family Tree. Abby has an extensive video game resume including voicing Wonder Woman in Multiversusus, League of Legends, Marvel Rivals, Demon Slayer: Sweep the Board, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants Unleashed, Star Trek: Resurgence, LEGO Fortnite, Fire Emblem, Persona 5 Royal, Nier: Automata. The fourth and potentially final TV season of the hit anime Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba aired its fourth season this summer, adapting and expanding on the “Hashira Training Arc” of Koyoharu Gotouge's manga. We weren't able to review this season right when it finished due to work on our massive Kyoto Animation project, but now that we're between seasons we thought it was time to talk once more about one of our favorite ongoing anime. These episodes adapt a very short slice of the manga, expanding on it in really wonderful ways to give us a final stretch of in-depth character development before the chaos of the Infinity Castle Arc, which will be produced as a film trilogy in the coming years. As always, ufotable's adaptational choices are really smart and interesting to talk about, and it all builds to a season finale that's one of the best episodes in the show's history. Enjoy! We'll be going on a bit of a hiatus for now as we work on SEASON 5 of Japanimation Station, our ‘Grand Tour' through a variety of anime, which will be premiering later this winter. Weekly Suit Gundam makes its triumphant return to review the long-awaited Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM, the film sequel to the first Gundam anime of the 21st century: Gundam SEED and Gundam SEED Destiny. We are big fans of the original SEED on this podcast, and were driven slightly insane by Destiny, so seeing director Mitsuo Fukuda and the original cast and crew come back together for a final adventure, based on story material left behind by the late Chiaki Morosawa, is extremely cathartic, especially since the film they made is so astonishingly great. Now that it's finally dropped in the US on Netflix (albeit in a strange dub-only release – we would encourage listeners to, uh, *search elsewhere* for the original Japanese), we're free to talk about the film at length, diving into the incredible action, surprisingly potent storytelling, and how the movie finally does right by Kira, Lacus, Shinn, and all the other great characters left in tatters by Destiny. Enjoy, and join us next week for another bonus episode of Japanimation Station, where we'll be reviewing the Hashira Training Arc season of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba.
