Superficial Sci-Fi: Rupert Sanders' Ghost in the Shell On this week's episode of WatchThis W/RickRamos, Ibrahim & I dive into Rupert Sanders' 2017 live-action re-imagining of Mamoru Oshii's 1995 Anime-Classic, Ghost in the Shell.  There are so many things that can go wrong with an adaptation and Sanders manages to check many of those boxes. From casting Scarlett Johansson  in the lead role through a amateurish handling of theme and purpose - the film is - certainly - beautiful to look at, however it misses out on so much that made the oringal anime both special and important. In an attempt to be all things to all audiences, the film fails to capture the existential ideas and philosophical statements of the original material (manga and anime film). We may be wrong, but you'd have to mount an argument against what we have to say. Feel free to let us know what you think . . . gondoramos@yahoo.com - Many Thanks.  For those of you who would like to donate to this undying labor of love, you can do so with a contribution at https://www.buymeacoffee.com/watchrickramos - Anything and Everything is appreciated, You Cheap Bastards.

Cyborg Awakening: Mamoru Oshii's Ghost in the Shell From time to time this podcast allows Mr. Chavez & Myself the opportunity to explore new genre's. With the encouragement and recommendations of WatchThis listeners, we have had the opportunity to engage in new experiences a number of times. Some of these new viewings have been from The World of Japanese Anime (Thank You, Mr. Burroughs!). This week we dive into one of the very best, Mamoru Oshii's 1995 dystopian masterpiece Ghost in the Shell. It is rare that a film is able to deliver on so many different levels (entertaining/exciting - insightful/thought-provoking), but this is precisely what Oshii's film does. What could have been a simple and obvious look into a bleak and misery-infused Science-Fiction future is, rather, an insightful and compelling examination of Artificial Intelligence, The Soul . . . its relation to the species and culture, and intellectual and emotional awareness. This is an incredible film that mixes Fritz Lang, Blade Runner, martial-arts & gun-play, and the police procedural to examine grand existential questions. Take a listen as we continue diving deeper and deeper into the world of AI and its promises, hopes, and threats for the future. As always, we can be reached at gondoramos@yahoo.com - Many Thanks.  For those of you who would like to donate to this undying labor of love, you can do so with a contribution at https://www.buymeacoffee.com/watchrickramos - Anything and Everything is appreciated, You Cheap Bastards.

Talking About Kenji Mizoguchi's Ugetsu with our guest, production designer Yôhei TanedaIn this episode of Movies We Like, we are thrilled to have production designer Yôhei Taneda join us to discuss his fascinating career and one of his favorite films, Kenji Mizoguchi's 1953 classic, Ugetsu. Taneda shares his journey into the world of production design, from his early days as an art student to his experiences working on both Japanese and American films, such as Kill Bill: Volume 1, The Hateful Eight, the Monster Hunt films, The Flowers of War, and When Marnie Was There.Throughout the episode, Taneda offers unique insights into the art of production design, discussing the intricacies of creating immersive worlds for both live-action and animated films. He delves into the challenges of balancing the director's vision with his own artistic sensibilities, and the importance of collaborating with other departments to create a cohesive visual experience. As the conversation turns to Ugetsu, Taneda explores the film's haunting aesthetic and the ways in which Mizoguchi's use of space and design elements contribute to its ghostly atmosphere. He draws comparisons between Ugetsu and other Japanese films of the era, highlighting the symbolic significance of water and the influence of Noh theater on the film's visual style.Ugetsu remains a timeless masterpiece, a testament to Mizoguchi's artistic vision and the power of cinema to transport audiences to otherworldly realms. Pull on your mirrorshades, jack into the matrix, and start your run with us today!Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence retains the setting and characters of its predecessor, but Mamoru Oshii's sequel film is in every way an intensification of the first film. Where Ghost in the Shell balanced its philosophical introspection with decisive bursts of action, Innocence wends its way through ontology, Eastern philosophy, ecclesiastical blank verse, and Buddhist poetry before it reaches its kinetic and ambivalent conclusion. With the Major having transcended her life at Section 9, Batou is left to clean up the messes of the transgressive elite in New Port City. A cyborg policewoman and her partner hunt a mysterious and powerful hacker called the Puppet Master. This is the first anime movie I ever saw as a teenager and it blew my mind. Unlike Akira, which has some thematic elements of cyberpunk, Ghost in the Shell bleeds the cyber and the punk in every goddamn frame. It is a glorious representation of the sub-genre and it belongs among the very top of the cyberpunk catalog. So, do me a favor – it's time to access your cranial jacks, boot up your Ono-Sendai Cyberspace 7, and slap on your damn mirror-shades. You know what time it is! "Ghost in the Shell," an iconic tale of cybernetic evolution and identity, first materialized as a groundbreaking 1995 animated film, directed by Mamoru Oshii. Adapted from Masamune Shirow's manga, the film is a Japanese-British international co-production, visually melding traditional cel animation with CGI. Its narrative unfolds in 2029 Japan, focusing on Major Motoko Kusanagi, a cyborg public-security agent on the hunt for an enigmatic hacker known as the Puppet Master. The film interweaves profound philosophical themes about self-identity in an age where technology blurs the lines between human and machine.

While Ghost in the Shell began its life as a manga in the late '80s, the 1995 animated feature film that interpreted its story is what most people are familiar with. Created by renowned artist and writer Masamune Shirow and brought to the big screen by Mamoru Oshii, Ghost in the Shell deals with surprisingly heady subject matter: Science, politics, philosophy, and morality, amongst many other themes. The future world of cyborgs and humans envisioned in this work isn't too far off the mark, either, particularly when compared to other works of cyberpunk that are much more fanciful and overtly fictional in their approach. Overall, this is perhaps what makes Ghost in the Shell so notable to so many. It feels alive and true-to-form. And it's certainly worth a deep dive right here on KnockBack.
