(Producer's note: this episode is late due to a very busy week. Apologies for the delay.) Have you all heard about the smash hit new shonen series Kagurabachi? It's gotten three anime seasons, two movies, and has sold one trillion copies of its manga - it's the new MORBIUS SWEEP... okay, jokes and memes aside, sometimes Morbius-meme-ing a series can work, but we'll see in the coming weeks and months if Kagurabachi has the legs to live on in the pages of Jump. And along with talking about that, there is good news for the future of One Piece on Netflix, a rundown of everything from the Aniplex Online Fest event, Demon Slayer and SPY x FAMILY getting Switch games that may or may not be deemed shovelware, and a rundown of Crunchyroll's fall simulcast slate... MOST of it, rather. P.S. next time we'll be going hard on the Rightstuf news. Summary: A creature named Kyubey offers Madoka and Sayaka a wish if they agree to become 'magical girls' and fight abstract beings called “witches.” However, a magical girl named Homura is, for uncertain reasons, determined to stop this agreement.
Time for episode 93! And we returned to the world of Madoka Magica! Unfortunately, not with the 4th movie, but with the 2nd and 3rd seasons of Magia Record. And while we though season 1 was solid but fell short of the original, seasons 2 and 3 are kind of a mess. For various reasons. You can check them out on Crunchyroll. This week, we are welcoming special guest Leeci, student of Gnosticism and devotee of St. Mary Magdalene, to talk about one of my favorite things in the whole world, Anime! Those of you who grew up with a little bit of weeb in you probably know that Anime has a history of bringing up occult and esoteric issues within the narrative. In fact, both Leeci and I probably wouldn't have picked paths that emphasized magic or mysticism without the introduction via anime as kids. So with this in mind, we decided to explore three different series and talk about how they are, or are not, related to the mysteries they are attempting to discuss. What makes the self? Why is it important to find the you inside the heart of others? How can we transcend our suffering? What does it mean to be interdependent with the Beloved? How does one find their own personal Gnosis? We discuss Ergo Proxy, NGE, and, if you hop on over to the extended episode found on Patreon, we talk Madoka Magica too! All this and more, on today's episode of SaturnVox. To find out more on Leeci, check out their instagram @luminousleeci To find more on SaturnVox, check out their instagram and twitter @saturnvox, or, visit their website saturnvox.com. If you want to support the show towards goals of better equipment, merch, and bonus material, please check out the Patreon at www.patreon.com/saturnvox where you can also find the extended version of this episode. Episode 237. We watched the 2011 anime series Puella Magi Madoka Magica, a deconstruction of the magical girl genre. Madoka and her friends fantasize about being magical girls, but when they meet a classmate who really has this secret identity, they learn about the dark bargain you have to make to gain that power. A cute alien creature asks you to sign a contract, granting you any wish, in exchange for your services battling evil witches. There's no way out of the contract, and you'll almost certainly become corrupted and turn into a witch yourself. But when you can have your heart's desire, and protect your community and your closest friends from danger, is the sacrifice worth it?00:00:00 - Intro 00:00:06 - Welcome and banter 00:01:20 - Spoiler free thoughts: Madoka Magica 00:15:01 - Housekeeping 00:19:42 - Spoilers!! This week we have LindaMarie who is a crafter, cosplayer, and fursuiter who relocated to Athens, Georgia right before the 2020 quarantine. LindaMarie has been making her own costumes for seven years, and recently leveled up her sewing skills into making fursuit partials. She has a special affinity for darker magical girl anime such as Madoka Magica and shows off her Kyoko Sakura cosplay (pictured in part here) whenever she gets a chance. LindaMarie has also roped her friends, family, and partner into cosplay groups and attending furry conventions. She deeply appreciates their enthusiasm and encouragement of her hobbies, along with their willingness to act as human action figures when called upon. LindaMarie currently works in the computer lab at the Athens Clarke County Library where she spends her time helping patrons and daydreaming about her latest projects.
A depressed Psychology Bachelors gives some takes and reviews the artistic awesomeness that is Madoka Magica with a focus on Sayaka, who seems to be the most relatable character (for me). I created the backing music. You can listen to those tracks free at the links below. This goes pretty deep into my own backstory, hitting some intense topics. Prepare yourself for the journey! Good luck. I think I speak for majority of us when I say you really have no idea what you're getting yourself into with this anime. Madoka Magica gives the appearance of the typical cutesy magical girl anime, but the storyline and fights are shonen-like. Join us as we discuss Aundrea's pick for what she considers an underrated anime! Do you think it's underrated? Did it fuck with your mind? Do you think the “villain” is actually a villain? Would your one wish be just as fucked up as ours? Can you pronounce the full actual name of the anime? Would Alex make a cute magical girl?
After a long hiatus, the gang is back with more anime watched, more trash, and more hot takes. On Episode 36, we tackle the currently airing anime, with commentary on the latest Isekais. Connor, Niamh, and Honorary Third Ghost Diver Autumn are back again to discuss the second half of the first season of Magic Knight Rayearth. It's a mech show now? We get into the gradual tonal shift as the series progresses and grows darker; the color coding of characters around red, blue, green, white, and purple/black; Caldina's character as another mode of femininity and as a person swayed by the love of the Magic Knights; Hikaru and blood and its thematic resonance for the show as a whole; the recurring themes around free will, possession, and mind control; the themes of love and the limits of love to protect you from harm; the queer-coding of Inouva; Connor's attempt to stop being so mean to Niamh's beloved dumb bishie, Ferio; the metaphorical usage of the Pillar system of Cephiro to talk about gendered expectations in patriarchal cisheteronormativity; and the tragedy of Princess Emeraude and Lord Zagato and how it ties together all the themes so far and also leaves open the door for far, far more in need of exploration in season 2. Join us next time, for the first ten episodes of season 2 of Magic Knight Rayearth, episodes 21–30! As a note, the post-ED backmatter for this podcast episode includes some Madoka Magica spoilers.
