ew year, same tardy nonsense—we recorded a few weeks ago, but life and technical issues got in the way of the production process, and for that, we sincerely apologize to y’all. Before we get into the Golden Zonkies’ class of 2024, however, we wanted to have an old-school “PPR-ass PPR” round robin on a featured topic, and what better subject than the art and science behind video game box art? Join George, Ed, and Andrew as they discuss the history, culture, and legacy of box art, such as the ever-changing motifs of design and the artists who famously brought them to life on shelves like George Opperman, Greg Martin, Bob Wakelin, Yoshitaka Amano, Tom DuBois, Ken Sugimori, Yoji Shinkawa, and more. Hell, have you ever thought about what the box of your favorite video game may have looked like in a different country? Raccoon Mario soaring against a yellow backdrop may be a Mount Rushmore type of pastiche here, but in Japan, the giant ensemble piece of characters against a teal palate is what tickles the nostalgia bone in that corner of the world, and that’s so weirdly fascinating don’t you think? Every year that passes is another year closer to a fully digital media landscape, and while that can have huge ramifications on the preservation of software, something as innocuous as box art can sometimes be the little dumb thing that makes physical media truly that much more special. We hope you enjoy the latest episode of Press Pause Radio—and don’t forget to check out the next one, because we’ll be doing the Golden Zonkies for 2024 next! Mail us at our new email Mailbag@presspauseradio.com, leave a voicemail at 469-PPR-TALK, and be sure to stop by at our Forums if you haven’t already registered and post your thoughts about the show. Mokuhanga has the ability to take the artist or craftsperson anywhere they would like to be. From the subject matter in their studio to physical movement around the world, teaching, exploring, and discovering. Wonder and beauty is what makes mokuhanga so special. In this episode of The Unfinished Print, I speak with printmaker Jacqueline Gribbin, who has spent years honing her craft in mokuhanga and other printmaking techniques across Japan, Southeast Asia, and Australia. We discuss her deep connection with Indigenous communities, collaborating with the late Ralph Kiggell, and exploring the nuances of water-based and oil-based mokuhanga. Jaqueline explains her experiences traveling to isolated communities, conducting workshops, and sharing her passion for printmaking. We'll explore her teaching methods, the importance of community in her work, and how she balances creating and selling her prints. Please follow The Unfinished Print and my own mokuhanga work on Instagram @andrezadoroznyprints or email me at theunfinishedprint@gmail.com Notes: may contain a hyperlink. Jacqueline Gribbin - website Shifting Tides (2022) Nagasawa Art Park (MI Lab) Awaji City - Nagasawa Art Park was an artist-in-residence program located in Awaji City, Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan. It was open for 12 years before evolving into MI Lab in 2012. More info, here. Toru Ueba - was a print instructor at Nagasawa Art Park, and was one of Yoonmi's instructors in 2004. Ralph Kiggell (1960-2022) - was one of the most important mokuhanga practitioners. Originally from England, Ralph lived and worked in Thailand. Ralph pushed the boundaries of mokuhanga with extremely large pieces, jigsaw carving, and by using fantastic colour. He also worked with the International Mokuhanga Conference to promote mokuhanga around the world. He will be greatly missed. Ralph's work can be found, here. His obituary in The Guardian can be found, here. His interview with The Unfinished Print can be found, here. Orange Flower On Blue Hiroki Satake - is a mokuhanga printmaker, and instructor based in Japan. He has taught at MI Lab, as well as given demonstrations regarding tool sharpening, around the world. Instagram 赤絵(アンドレ・マルティ「狼よ!」より) (2022) 34.7cm×28.4cm registration - there are several registration methods in mokuhanga. The traditional method is called the kentō registration, where you carve two notches, straight another an "L." There is also a "floating kentō," which is where the notches are cut in a piece of "L" shaped wood and not on the wood where you are cutting your image, hence "floating." Lastly, there are removable "pins," such as ones made by Ternes Burton. bokashi - is a mokuhanga technique, where the pigment fades from a heavy colour to a softer, broad colour. Made famous by prints designed by Hokusai and Hiroshige, this technique is, for me, the most popular technique utilized by mokuhanga printmakers. There are various types: Ichimoji-bokashi or straight line graduation, used in the above mentioned Hiroshige and Hokusai prints. Ichimoji-mura-bokashi or straight line gradation with uneven edge. Ō-bokashi or wide gradation, Ate-nashi-bokashi or gradation without definition. Futa-iro-bokashi or two tone gradation, and ita-bokashi or softer-edge gradation, where the block is cut in a specific way to achieve this style of gradation. All of these styles of bokashi technique take practice and skill but are very much doable. Below is a fine example of bokashi by Paul Binnie: The Torii Gate at Miyajima (2009) 37.5 x 26cm sizing paper - at times mokuhanga printmakers will size their paper. Size is made from water, animal glue (rabbit, horse), and alum. What the size does is keep the pigments the artist uses from “bleeding” into the outer edges of the paper. There are many recipes of size, here is one that artist Walter J. Phillips used. intaglio printing - is a printing method, also called etching, using metal plates such as zinc, and copper, creating “recessed” areas which are printed with ink on the surface of these "recesses.” More info, here. Leading the Conservative Party, Thatcher implemented a series of economic policies known as "Thatcherism," which emphasized deregulation, privatization of state-owned industries, and reducing the power and influence of trade unions. Her tenure was marked by significant economic transformation, as well as controversial measures that sparked widespread debate and protest. Tamarind Institute - was originally founded in Los Angeles in 1960 by June Wayne, and is a world renowned center for fine art lithography. Established to revive and sustain the art of lithography, which was in decline in the United States, Tamarind quickly became a leader in the education and promotion of lithographic techniques. In 1970, the institute moved to the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, where it continues to thrive as a key institution in the printmaking world. Dedicated to advancing the lithographic arts through rigorous education, collaborative projects, and the production of high-quality prints, the Tamarind Institute's influence extends globally, contributing significantly to the development and appreciation of lithography as a vibrant art form. Subscribers! Be sure to go to the blog to read the description easier & check out links for this episode! This month's episode is another short ReView! What is a “ReView” episode, you might ask? Well, it's my highly-clever (ok not really) name for episodes where I go back and revisit an older title I haven't seen in a long time, and see if what I remember (and what my opinions on it) are still the same now that some time's gone by. This month, I dig into a dark 80s fantasy OVA film with character designs by Yoshitaka Amano! No, it's NOT that vampire one you're thinking of–it's the much lesser-known Amon Saga! TikTok/Instagram: @ouranimeshow & Email ouranimeshow@gmail.comSpoilers: Major Plot points of Akira and Angels EggAs we talk about these films will be riddles with spoilers here are the two films:Akira 1988 Akira is a 1988 Japanese animated cyberpunk action film directed by Katsuhiro Otomo, produced by Ryōhei Suzuki and Shunzō Katō, and written by Otomo and Izo Hashimoto, based on Otomo's 1982 manga of the same nameA secret military project endangers Neo-Tokyo when it turns a biker gang member into a rampaging psychic psychopath who can only be stopped by a teenager, his gang of biker friends and a group of psychics.Angel's EggAngel's Egg is a Japanese art film original video animation written and directed by Mamoru Oshii. Released by Tokuma Shoten on 15 December 1985, the film was a collaboration between artist Yoshitaka Amano and Oshii. It features very little spoken dialogueA mysterious young girl wanders a desolate, otherworldly landscape, carrying a large egg.
This sci-fi vignette sets the stage for one of the most original tales we've seen from the genre in some time. It's straight from the pages of your favorite classic science fiction dime store novel, and it revels in its weirdness. Just when you think you know what's going to happen, it blindsides you with something you weren't expecting. For instance, it's easy to assume that the ship's crew was recreated because the original humans died, but the additional wrinkle that their real selves are alive has disturbing implications. Are these living, breathing people going to die when the migrant ship arrives at their intended new planet? What is life and who is allowed to decide where a clone may live? These are heady questions that Exception introduces, but doesn't force on the audience – they will be in the back of your mind as it progresses, however.Further, Exception is a visually arresting feast. It may not look anything like what you're used to from the anime world, but it's a treat for the eyes and steeped in nontraditional design. Everything about Exception is otherworldly, from top to bottom. Most of that is due to legendary character designer Yoshitaka Amano, who was responsible for bringing the cast to life, but there's an unsettling eerieness that permeates just about every part of the series. It's a fun kind of weird that we don't see enough of in Western or anime series, and I'm thrilled to see that no punches were pulled bringing this story to fruition. In the distant future, humanity has been forced out of its home on Earth. The entire population must move to a different star system, one where there's a planet suitable for terraforming. The crew has been recreated from what were apparently living, breathing human beings prior to their journey through space.Their new bodies, created using a biological 3D printer called The Womb, retain the memories and DNA of their former selves, but neither Nina (Ali Hillis) nor Mack (Robbie Daymond) are under the delusion that they're the “same” people they were when their memories were backed up, only recreations. The similarities are impeccable though, and crewmate Oscar (Eugene Byrd) is especially impressed with his new body as his cavities are gone. The crew is headed to Planet X-10 on a journey that's taken about a week to get started, but it will end up taking much more time to complete the overall mission. Interestingly enough, the crew's “real selves” are traveling on a migrant vessel from Earth in cryosleep while their copies work away on the spaceship. One by one, the crew members are recreated: Nina, Mack, Oscar, Patty (Nadine Nicole), and then Lewis (Nolan North). While Lewis is in the middle of being printed, the ship runs into a devastating solar flare that interrupts the printing process and causes a few problems. When everything is all said and done, it's revealed that the system malfunction has caused the final member, Lewis, to come out disfigured. The crew must decide whether to euthanize him and start over for the good of the mission, or cultivate new cells and contend with Lewis the way he is…until things go south. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

In our unending quest to understand fuckability, the Hard Choices crew plucked out a list of notable characters from the Nintendo masterpiece Final Fantasy VI and got down to some fantasizing of our own. Claire Mulkerin, Dan Mulkerin, Alex Roberts, and MeganBob explore an entire floating continent's worth of boners in our search for the median of fuckability in the FFVI universe. We found an indisputable median, but along the way we also delved into blunt himbos, the outfit Kefka makes you wear, and the FFVI character who is most desperate to be pegged. We fuck monsters, ghosts, old guys, banana-looking motherfuckers, and a murder clown, all in the name of bringing you the kind of experience that the fanfiction-producing internet of 1994 simply was not ready for. Hit download, pull up the Yoshitaka Amano concept art, and climb aboard this sexy airship bound for the throbbing heart of horniness. By the way, we have a Patreon!

Uncanny Japan - Exploring Japanese Myths, Folktales, Superstitions, History and Language
The baku (獏) is a Japanese mythical creature that, when invited, slips into your room at night to gobble up your nightmares. Below is an example of the Takarabune (宝船) image with the old character for baku (獏) on the sail. Tuck this under your pillow on New Year's Eve for some extra lucky dreams. You bolt awake, your chest tight, and you’re panting, terrified. You’ve just had the most awful nightmare. You look around the room. There’s a dim light, either from your cell phone charger, a soft night light, or the flickering glow of an oil lamp behind thick washi paper. It’s enough for you see by, at least a little bit. After checking all the corners of your room, the foot of your bed, and that half open closet and finding no one there, you relax just a little. Take a few deep breaths. Tell yourself, it was just a nightmare. Not real. But it’s a nightmare you’ve had before. Several times in fact. You wish you’d stop having it. Just then there is a noise. The sound of your window sliding open. You pull the covers up to your chin and watch horrified as the most freaky looking creature you’ve ever seen climbs into your room. Believe it or not, today’s show isn’t a scary one. It’s a sweet one. An endearing one. A downright cute one, if you will. On today’s Uncanny Japan I’m going to tell you about a Japanese mythical creature, often said to be a youkai, although I’ve seen some debate about that. It’s called a baku. And it’s really here to help you. I promise. Real Intro: What is an Baku? So what exactly is that creature making its way across the floor toward you? Let’s take a closer look. That creature is called a baku and has a long nose like an elephant, four feet that look like they belong on a tiger. It’s body resembles a bear. Its eyes? That of a rhino. It sports two tusks, and on its backend flicks the tail of an ox. But keep in mind there are several different varieties. Why such a patchwork beast? Well, one explanation is that when the gods were done creating all the animals, they looked around, gathered up all the scraps and cobbled together the baku. Which is a legendary creature that made its way from China to Japan at about the same time as Buddhism did. The China version is a little different, actually protecting a person from pestilence and evil, while once in Japan the baku’s soul purpose seems to be to eat your dreams, or better, your nightmares. It needs them to survive. It’s said that back in the day, children who woke from a nightmare would know to repeat three times, “Baku-san, come eat my dream.” I’ve seen a couple different versions in Japanese, one being “Kono yume, baku ni agemasu.” Literally, “I give this dream to the baku.” Either way, after repeating three times one of these lines, or something similar, the baku will enter the room, make its way over, and gobble up the bad dream. The dreamer will never have that particular nightmare again. So that’s what a bizarre looking baku does. It spends the night hoping from rooftop to rooftop, listening for someone to yell out, so it can hurry over and feast on their bad dreams. I read in a couple places that you have to be careful. If you call a baku too often it will get greedy and won’t stop at your nightmares. It will proceed to devour all your hopes and dreams and aspirations, leaving you with an entirely meaningless life. But I couldn’t find that exact sentiment written in Japanese. There’s no way I can read everything about this adorable little guy, so maybe I missed it. There was one thing I did find, though, and that is that, sadly, in recent times, some stories about the baku have flipped the mythology. Instead of eating only your nightmares, it does eat all your dreams. And I guess this could include your hopes and goals, which turns this adorable little weird beastie into a bad guy. But he isn’t, no matter how bizarre he looks and how he might be sneaking into your window late at night. Speaking of that, this month on Patreon I read a Lafcadio Hearn story about the baku. And in it, the baku after being called, actually refuses to eat a lucky dream. Here’s something interesting: If you live in Japan or are planning to visit, you can sometimes still see depictions of the baku at old shrines or temples. Look up. You know how in the corners of those fancy curved roofs where you can sometimes find carvings of lucky mythical creatures, well, at some temples they’ll also have a baku or two looking down at you. Easily identifiable by that long nose. The Baku in History: Okay, let’s look at the baku through the ages. In the late Muromachi Period (around the 1500s) both the image and the character of the baku were used as good luck charms. For example, — and this is something you can try next month, if you’d like, — if you want your first dreams in the New Year to be pleasant and auspicious you can get or make a drawing of a takarabune or treasure boat, that’s the boat the seven lucky gods sail on and slip it under your pillow. To further up your sweet dreams potential, you should write the character for baku on the sail of the boat. Okay, back to the Muromachi Era, I also read that people who were on their deathbeds would be given an image of the baku to hold as protection against evil spirits. More recently, in the Edo era, I found that some people used baku-shaped pillows to fend off bad dreams. And by pillows, I’m not talking about the soft, down-filled things we use today. Pillows back then were made of wood or ceramic with a small cloth tube filled with something like soba husks tied to the top. It’s said that even in the 1910s, Japanese children kept baku talisman by their bedsides. When researching the baku you discover right away that the word baku and the kanji also refer to the Asian tapir, an animal that is also a little funky looking with its long nose and stripped body. I found two lines of thought. One that the mythical baku came first, then when the tapir was seen, because it resembled the dream eater, it was given the same name. But another theory is that there used to be a kind of tapir that lived in China long, long ago, but is now extinct. We don’t really know what it looked like but perhaps the nightmare-devouring creature we have now might have been based on that animal. When reading around, I was pleasantly surprised to find the baku even now hanging out in popular culture. The Baku in Popular Culture: One I already new about was the pokemon Drowzee in English or Suleepu in Japanese. It’s special ability is to put people to sleep and eat their dreams. It tends to like good dreams though. See what I said about turning the myth backwards. Another is author Neil Gaiman’s Sandman, The Dream Hunters (illustrated by Yoshitaka Amano). I’ve got the big hunkin’ The Absolute Sandman — which I had signed by Neil himself when he came to Tokyo so many years ago — but it didn’t have this story in it. Boo~. It seems The Dream Hunters is in Absolute Sandman volume five. It’s a story about a monk, a fox spirit, a tanuki, and a baku. And I even saw that there was an episode of Supernatural that mentioned the baku. I’m sure the little guy is out there in other places as well. Let me know if you know any others. So I’ll finish up with: remember next time you wake up from a bad dream, clutch your blanket tight and say three times, “Kono yume, baku ni agemasu!” / "この夢獏にあげます" or “I give this dream to the baku!” And then don’t be surprised if your window slides open and a freaky little creature lumbers in. Or if you’d prefer you could preemptively stop those nightmares and encourage good sleep, by keeping an image of the baku nearby: a talisman, a drawing under your pillow, or one stitched onto your pillowcase perhaps. Thank you for Listening Thank you all for listening. And if you want to hear me read Lafcadio Hearn’s story “The Eater of Dreams” it’s this month’s Bedtime Story over on Patreon. For only $5 support you can hear that and like over thirty other folktales and stories. We’re a two-person show and your support really helps a lot. As a matter of fact, the microphone I’ve been using for the past year decided to crap out on me about a month ago and Richpav and I were making due with old mics and his sound savvy. But because of my gracious patrons I was able to level up and get a Shure SM7B, which is dreamy. Everyone take care, stay healthy, make sure you’re not calcium deficient, and I’ll talk to you again in two weeks. Bye Bye.

It's once again time for Anime August here at Catching Up On Cinema! This week, Trevor forces Kyle to sit through Yoshiaki Kawajiri's Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (2000)! With character designs by Yoshitaka Amano, and featuring fluid, gorgeously rendered animation and background paintings, the film is a Gothic sci-fi actioner that unfortunately suffers from poor pacing and a bloated runtime. Undeniably stunning in terms of production design and action choreography, the film's technical brilliance is unfortunately only allowed to be appreciated in fits and spurts, making for a frustrating, and somewhat tepid experience.

Who knew that when we surveyed our fans they would be so passionate about anime? We had no idea we would ever do an anime movie review and yet, in this episode we review two! The films are Vampire Hunter D and Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust. The films are based on a lonstanding series of Japanese novels written by Hideyuki Kikuchi and illustrated by Yoshitaka Amano. The first film was released in 1985 and directed by Toyoo Ashida. The second film, released in 2000, was directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri. The English dub on the films features some renowned voice actor, including most notably, John DiMaggio (Chowder, Futurama, Adventure Time). Both films center around a half-vampire, half-human hybrid, known only as D. This cloaked stranger has an odd, wisecracking face in his palm, which has all sorts of unexplained powers and is referred to either as a parasite or a symbiote. In the 1985 feature, he is avenging a young woman who was bitten by a powerful vampire noble. In the 2000 feature, our hero is tracking a vampire who has seemingly kidnapped a beautiful woman, only to find that blah blah something about love. This week's "Hidden Track" is by GORE. Their song Ashtray / Libido can be found here: https://borehardcore.bandcamp.com/album/bore. The band has a thriving instagram and facebook account, which you should probably like. K and Danny had an amazing time at Kumoricon 2018 and sat down the next day to record their thoughts! We have a conversation about what it was like watching Yoshitaka Amano paint, and why his entire philosophy of art and artistry made us so excited about what we do. His rare perspective got us talking between ourselves about the value of art and about career artists overcoming the limitations of their industry, so we recorded a bonus episode of our experiences. We also share convention highlights and how this con reminded us of the reasons we podcast, and why art is so awesome. Your favorite anime podcast crossover is back! We team up again with the Warui Deshou podcast to dissect and gush over Mamoru Oshii and Yoshitaka Amano’s 1985 masterpiece art film, Angel’s Egg. CONTENT WARNING: Discussion of stillbirth, miscarriage, possible anxiety-inducing subjects such as loss of faith. ***The first half is spoiler-free, see timecodes below*** (This episode follows Warui Deshou's format, which uses more clips and sketch segments than we do, so be prepared for intermittent wackiness) ——— We discuss the film’s gorgeous aesthetics, the lives and other works of the principle creatives, their personal relationships to Catholicism and/or faith in general, and try to interpret what is perhaps the most inscrutable anime film ever made. Interpretations provided are our own, and we don’t claim them to be definitive, exclusionary or authoritative in any way. This episode is very personal, we spend a good deal of time talking about our personal histories and feelings about things beyond (but not unrelated) to the anime itself. We also tried to mix it with moments of laughter and some funnier discussions throughout, but we feel the insights and personal discussions in relation to the film proved very worthwhile. This is a long podcast that covers a lot of topics, so please use the timecodes below to jump around in case, say, you already know all about Oshii or haven’t seen Angel’s Egg and don’t want to be spoiled. In 1985, Mamoru Oshii and Yoshitaka Amano, with the help of a seemingly infinite budget, made a haunting and singular video animation feature called ANGEL'S EGG, and this week I made former animephobe Molly Lambert (MTV News) watch it and talk about it with me. Good news: she's not scared of anime anymore! Bad news: We can't really tell you what happens in this film. But that's not really a bad thing — it may or may not be Oshii's meditation on losing the Christian faith, and as such is a bramble of amazing dreamlike imagery and nihilism. In the second half of the episode, Eric Thurm (Drunk T*D Talks) and I continue down the Madoka sinkhole, into That Episode and more. There was so much to discuss, from income inequality in Mitakihara City, how to make a cat cosplay as Kyubey, and crushing loneliness. In completely predictable news, Madoka Magica is proving to be too thematically dense for one podcast! I'll be releasing some bonus content from this week's discussion with Eric on the Patreon, so stay tuned for that. Also be sure to leave a review of the podcast on iTunes to enter to win a fancy-schmancy GHOST IN THE SHELL Blu-Ray ... details in the first 2 minutes of this episode. Nasir Gebelli By Kaleb Schweiss Nasir Gebelli was a programmer for Square Enix. He was part of Square’s A-Team, along with Nobou Uematsu and Yoshitaka Amano to create Final Fantasy. But that’s not the first project Nasir took on at Square, nor was it his first programming job. Nasir was born in Iran, and later moved to the US to study computer science. In 1980, he started a company called Sirius Software with a guy named Jerry Jewell. Gebelli made numerous strides within Sirius, including creating advanced graphics techniques for the Apple II. His first project was a program called EasyDraw; a logo and character creation program that he would use for his later games. It was with Sirius that Gibelli developed a reputation for quickly producing games. He would program as many as twelve games a year. One in particular, Gorgo, ended up selling around 23,000 copies; making it one of the best selling computer games in the early 80’s. In 1981, Gebelli left Sirius to establish his own software company named Gebelli Software. He released a few successful games, but by 1983, his games were becoming notoriously bad according to Softalk, a magazine focusing on computers and games. The Video Game Crash of 1983 would lead Gebelli’s company in shambles, and he closed his doors. After Gebelli Software went belly up, Nasir did what any sensible businessman would do. He traveled the world for a few years. He would eventually resurface in 1986 when he went to visit a friend, Doug Carlston who owns Broderbund. This was the company who originally did the Carmen Sandiego games. Calrlston told Gebelli about the rising power of the NES, and suggested that Nasir should program for it. Gebelli was interested, and travelled with Doug to Japan; where he would meet with Nintendo and Square. Nintendo would ultimately be uninterested in Gebelli, but Square, and especially The Gutch, were aware of his reputation and excited to have him join the team. His joining of Square eventually let to the separation of Square from the parent company Denyuusha. Gebelli’s first game with Square would be 3-D WorldRunner for the NES. THis was a forward scrolling third person action game. It was one of the first stereoscopic 3D games, which gives the game a more 3D feel. Gibelli would then program Rad Racer, and it’s sequel later in 1990. And now, now that he has a few games under his belt, Gebelli, Sakaguchi, Uematsu, and Amano began to produce Final Fantasy, which would later be released in 1987. Final Fantasy featured numerous unique features such as the character creation system, classes, and the ever famous battle system. Gebelli and team didn’t miss a beat, and went on to create Final Fantasy II. This game introduced emotional story lines, and much more tragic events. The game also replaced traditional leveling with the activity based progression system, which would later go on to influence the SaGa and Grandia series, FF IV, and The Elder Scrolls series. Final Fantasy II also introduced an innovative dialogue system where key words would be memorized and used during conversations with NPC’s. Next comes Final Fantasy III, which came out in 1990. This game introduced the ever beloved job class system. Midway through the development of both Final Fantasy II and Final Fantasy III, Gebelli was forced to return to Sacramento, California due to an expired work visa. The rest of the staff followed him to Sacramento to finish producing the games. Gibelli would take another long break before returning to work on Secret of Mana, which is the second in the Mana series, released in 1993. Secret of Mana was more of an action role playing game, and included a cooperative multiplayer mode. The game was initially going to be one of the launching titles on the SNES CD, but was later altered to a cartridge due to the SNES CD being dropped. This game received critical acclaim, mainly for its real time battle system, innovative co op gameplay, in which second and third players could join in and drop out of the game at any time, and the customizable AI settings for computer controlled allies…. GAMBITS!!!! After Secret of Mana, Gibelli basically retired from royalties from Square and, you guessed it, traveled the world. He would later attend John Romero’s, co founder of ID Software, Apple II reunion in Dallas. Romero credited Gebelli as a major influence on his career. Gebelli lives in Sacramento, and remains good friends with Hironobu Sakaguchi. REMIX: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uarsKpKN68A

Final Fantasy IX began development shortly before the release of Final Fantasy VIII. A small glimpse into the early process of the game was revealed on the internet by Sakaguchi in 2010. On Mistwalker’s blog (Sakaguchi’s company), Sakaguchi posted early notes for the opening of Final Fantasy IX. Although the blog post is now impossible to find, an amature translation was jotted down in a forum deep inside the internet: This is probably the biggest glimpse we’ll ever get into the process of the making of any of these games: The game’s title and then fade to black. -Movie 1- Light emerges as the camera glides over an ocean following a landscape of trees, rivers, and fountains. The sky nears sunset as the camera moves onto the surface of a light fog and behind an airship called the Utsutsu. A large shadow approaches from behind revealing the Theatre ship. -Darkness- Loud rings of machinery fill the area. A dark figure walks forward curiously. The player makes an input for the character’s name. The default name is Zidane. *Scratch* The protagonist Zidane lights a match brightening the room with a dim glow. (The match can be moved without the risk of the flame extinguishing, but it will go out in a short period of time. Ignite the match quickly and light the lamp at the center of the room.) The lamp brightens the room completely revealing an arrangement of strangely shaped vases and boxes crawling on the pipe wall at the end of the room. This is the cargo bay area of an airship. “Don!” Three thieves walk in when the player opens the door. One of them jokingly asks Zidane for an autograph. The player can respond to it. Thieves: “Zidane, a Hayakatta.” Zidane: “What happened to the boss?” At that moment, footsteps sound from the ascending staircase. Zidane and the thieves turn towards the interruption. “Achoo!” The sneeze sounds boss lol. Thieves: “Boss!” A tall rotund man with a thick beard steps down from the staircase. He runs toward the gang of thieves and the battle transitions to the battle screen. -Boss Battle- Boss Sometime during the fight; “Oh, you guys are pretty good,” “I like it!” says the Boss. After a certain amount of damage is dealt, Boss leans over weak and says “That’s enough for today.” (Toitaro???) Inside the airship (continued) Boss: “Ha ha ha,… Nice shot as usual.” (“I’ll ask today.” Almost loud, Zidane nodded???) “Everyone, gather around!” The screen fades and transitions to Zidane and the thieves gathered around a table with a map spread across it. Boss sitting at the head of the table, initiates the meeting revealing a plan to kidnap a princess during a play held on a theatre ship. The screens transitions to the play. The first act has just ended at a pulling scene and the audience stands up with applause as the lights dim and the curtain closes. The stage director steps forward and informs the audience that there will be a short intermission before the second act begins. At the balcony sits the queen and her daughter Princess Garnet. The knight standing beside Garnet, asks her and the queen if they would like some more tea. The queen answers yes and insists her daughter to have some. The knight fixes the tea and slips a drug into Garnet’s cup. He hands the cups to them and watches carefully when Garnet takes a sip. She yawns a couple of minutes later after a few more sips. About a minute later another knight walks in from behind carrying a present. The knight that fixed the tea takes the package and presents it to the queen. “A gift to you, from the theatre,” he says. The queen hurries to open the lid and a dozen of oglops jump out. The queen jumps out of her seat panicking. The other guards hurry to her aid. With this distraction no notices that Garnet has fallen asleep and that the knight has run off with her. Inside the airship (continued) Boss: “Hmm, perfect.” Thief: “It’s a brilliant plan.” Thief 2: “This is very rich--!” (or maybe “This will make us rich!” ???) (Pose to pose a big jump in one of the robbers. Vibration, the model falls theater airships. Sakaguchi’s notes for movie 4: Close up of Princess Garnet Close up of her breasts. View of her breasts inside the clothes (a little). Also a view of her pendant of royalty.... -Hallway- She rushes away from the hallway. Two stare at each other. Zidane: “Hey, was that..” Thief: “Her breasts look comfortable..” Zidane: “No, no, she was wearing the pendant of the summons permitted by only royalty.” Thief: “I fell in Love at first sight..” Zidane: “Deep blue stone… “The Legend of Leviathan”, was it Princess Garnet?” Thief: “What are you talking about?” Zidane: “Never mind, change of plan, let’s follow after her”. Final Fantasy IX would be the last Final Fantasy on the Playstation, and as the series planned to move on into the next generation, it was 9 that was left to fittingly end the single-digit series of Final Fantasy games. Here’s a little excerpt form a Famitsu interview with The Gutch. Sakaguchi: I was thinking [of] it as an end. FF10 and FF11 are going to be on PS2 as well as PlayOnline. So with those, we were wanting to concentrate less on the feel of a world but more to use visuals which would push the hardware's ability. In that sense, because FF9 is the third in the series on PlayStation, instead of making it by pushing the abilities of the present hardware, we thought of making the feel of a Final Fantasy world once more... Interviewer: In the previous interview, it was explained that it [FF] was going back to its roots. And when you look at the logo, the crystal is there. It really is going back to the roots of the FF series. Why is that? Sakaguchi: Well, I wanted to try it out. (laughs) I said that it was because it was the last single numbered FF, but, yes, I like the number 9...(laughs) Sakaguchi served as producer of the game (with Shinji Hashimoto), and was the scenario writer for this “send-off”. It was not originally planned to be a main line final fantasy game, and had been given the title “Final Fantasy Gaiden” during the conceptual stages of the game. It wasn’t officially announced as Final Fantasy IX until late in 1999 when Final Fantasy IX, X, and XI were announced simultaneously. As a return to the fantasy genre that began the series, Final Fantasy 9 may not seem like the natural sequel to FF6, 7, or 8. The most notable difference is of course the controversial design and look of the game. Anime, realism, and steampunk gave way to old castles and more of a western fantasy approach. Hiroyuki Ito stated that they pulled from Norse and Nothern European Mythology, and to cap off the retro feel, there were some nice deformed character models to match the pre-FF8 Final Fantasy games. Hideo Minaba: Art Director:As this is the last single-digit Final Fantasy, we wanted to give the feeling of a series watershed, a sort of grand collection of what has come before. This old fantasy feel, not only affected the look of the game, but also the soundtrack as scored by Nobuo Uematsu. “I was shooting for subtle, classical-sounding tunes that fit the general setting and feel of the game…” he states, although he did start to steer clear of that feel. This departure and “boredom” with the sound he was originally going for may have to do with the 160 tracks he recorded for the game. The game ended up using around 140, including some remixes of other FF Soundtracks. Uematsu: I wanted to remix some of the older songs. Some of the character and location names were the same, so I thought that it would cool to use something from the past series. Some staff for Final Fantasy IX were returning from other Final Fantasy games. However as Yoshinori Kitase (Dir. FF7 and FF8), was moving onto FFX, the directing duties, as well as battle design duties, were put onto the shoulders of Hiroyuki Ito. Ito took much of the staff of Final Fantasy Tactics to work on the game. And as the game was mostly created in Hawaii (possibly due to Sakaguchi’s involvement with both FF9 and Spirits Within), many of the staff members were not Japanese. Yet another reason the game has more of a “western” sensibility. Many take umbridge in the speed of the battle system of Final Fantasy IX: At one time designed to be the fastest battle system in the series, yet turned out to be the slowest. The reason for this, apparently (according to a superfan, Alex Donaldson, that was interviewed on the podcast “My Favourite Game”), was that the system couldn’t handle the battle system, and the framerate wouldn’t be acceptable at that speed. Sakaguchi said, with the speed down, the game almost feels like turned based. *personally, I think he’s talking out of his ass. Despite the slow system, which we’ll talk about plenty in this episode, Final Fantasy IX was still a success. Delayed to avoid conflict with the release of Enix’s Dragon Quest, the game was released on July 7th, 2000 in Japan, and made it to North America on November 13th. A couple months later, Europe got it February 2001. The game didn’t sell as well as the previous 2 entries in the series, but it was still a hit. ultimately selling 5.3 Million copies by 2003. Its legacy now is a quiet one. It’s never had a sequel, it was the smallest release on the Playstation, and was released when the PS2 had already arrived on store shelves. Many gamers, perhaps unfamiliar with the roots of the series, were turned off by the art design. Perhaps something as simple as a logo not designed by Yoshitaka Amano could throw someone off. But alas, the game was still critically acclaimed, receiving many accolades at the playstation awards, and having very positive reviews from multiple gaming publications. As it now stands, Final Fantasy IX has the highest Metacritic score of any Final Fantasy. If anything, there’s at least one person who thinks the game a bigger success than 7 or 8.... IGN interview with The Gutch: Sakaguchi: The upcoming Final Fantasy IX. This title (currently under development) is based on a reflection of all the previous works in the series. The coming installment is my "favorite," it's closest to my ideal view of what Final Fantasy should be. Final Fantasy VIII Final Fantasy VIII was released for the PlayStation in 1999; February 11th in Japan, September 9th for North America, and October 27th for Europe. The game arrived on PC for Windows in 2000. It has also been available in the PlayStation Network since 2009. The game was developed and published by Square. Final Fantasy VIII’s development began in 1997, while Square was working on the English localization of Final Fantasy VII. The beloved and treasured Hironobu “The Gutch” Sakaguchi served as the games executive producer, while primarily working on his own demise; which takes the form of 2001’s Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. This lent the position of director for the game to Yoshinori Kitase. The battle system for Final Fantasy VIII was designed by Kitase and none other than Hiroyuki Ito. For the visual design, Kitase knew he wanted a combination of fantasy and realism. He aimed to create a cast of characters who appeared to be ordinary people. Tetsuya Nomura and art director Yusuke Naora worked tirelessly to achieve this feel by creating realistically proportioned characters. Naora also attempted to enhance realism by bright lighting effects while creating appropriate shadows. They also used motion capture technology to give the games characters more lifelike movements in the FMV sequences. The designers felt compelled to invert the atmosphere of the previous games, which were themed as light emerging from darkness. This decision was easy for the team, since they almost all worked on Final Fantasy VII, and felt a new direction was a good idea. The world designs were improved from the last title, due to the experience the team had working within their graphical boundaries. Another part of the “realism” theme that Kitase so desired, was noted with the realistically inspired architecture for the areas. This is noted with the Ancient Egyptian and Greek architecture. We also see a nod to Paris, while throwing a super high tech city in the mix to give it a different, futuristic feeling as well. In an attempt to maintain a foreign atmosphere, the characters designs were predominantly European in appearance. The first Final Fantasy VIII character to be developed was Squall. Nomura gave squall a fur jacket as a challenge to the games FMV designers. Thankfully, they accepted the challenge, and the jacket looks super realistic. Even if it seems slightly out of place… Nomura also found a place for some previously designed characters, such as Edea, Fujin, and Raijin. Nomura designed Edea based on the style of Yoshitaka Amano. Final Fantasy VIII also featured the series’ first lyrics based song. This took the form of Eyes on Me, by Faye Wong. The game received positive reviews, and was also commercially successful. In just two days after the North American release, Final Fantasy VIII became the top selling video game in the US, and would remain in that spot for over two weeks. As of March 31, 2003 the game had shipped 8.15 million copies worldwide. This was the fastest selling Final Fantasy title at the time.
