The Lady Dame returns to the show this week to watch one of the greatest musicals ever made, specifically because it's an anti-musical. Of course, a film that wins a Palme d'Or doesn't really need us to gush over it, but upon first seeing this, it's so against every musical trope you've ever known that it might turn you off entirely. If you hang with it, though, this movie will unfold as a sweet, thoughtful, mature story told entirely (and we mean entirely) through music. The French New Wave was known for breaking rules, but the subtle subversion of tropes in this film is so potent as to do something nearly impossible - make a movie musical that might be better on screen than on the stage. Jordan aka The Lady Dame joins us for a truly outstanding finale to this series, probably the single most “80's Ladies” movie out of all the ones we've watched. After all, it stars 3 of the ladies we've already talked about, two we've talked about in other iconic 80's roles, and one who is surely one of the greatest actresses of her generation. We've seen this before, though - just because the star power is good, it doesn't mean the story can hold up. So thank Ouiser for Robert Harling's play and script, because he channeled a terribly tragic story into the absolute epitome of tragicomedy. This script is just about perfect, and the cast is perfectly balanced; even a (justifiably) grumpy and miserable Herbert Ross still brought a level of care and detail to this film that only helped it. So prepare yourselves, especially for the single most emotional trivia segment we've ever had on this show. We're finishing up our 80's Ladies series with Steel Magnolias this week on Macintosh & Maud Haven't Seen What?! This week we sat down with two promising artists from the DMV music scene. Singer/Songwriter, Jae Alexander, and rapper/singer, Lady Dame, stopped by to chop it up about everything from there new releases ( Alexander The Great x DameVille ) down to the Democratic Party debates and the upcoming election. On the heels of the Kobe Bryant memorial service and the murder of Brooklyn rapper, Pop Smoke, we talked about the new found focus on legacy, black men and processing pain, and the over saturation of artist in their respective genres. Is D.Wade losing his mind? Is there a gay agenda being forced on society ? We touched on it all. Great show that you won’t want to miss. Tune in. Be back next week. Car, Gwyn, and Ode sit down for a conversation at Convocation with Lady Dame to discuss storytelling, family, and feasts.
This Monday as the nation mourns the loss of this countries 41st president, we here at Floyd 1:18 was having none of that. We had to break down the impact that George Bush and his decisions had on communities of color world round. We cleared up any miseducation promoted by mainstream media over one of the worst figures in American History. Next we chopped it up with independent artist, Davmoe and Lady Dame. Dame got into her rise from the fashion industry over into music while Davmoe discussed his decision to push full length projects back to back in a climate that supports the singles platform. Over two bottles (Dom P x Belair) of champagne and Patron shots, you already know this episode won’t disappoint. Tune in and follow these guests on social media; @davmoe x @ladydameofficial. Be back next week.
There were a variety of new topics this week to discuss. Unfortunately, we sadly reported that another YOUNG life was lost in the Hip-Hop community. The 20-year-old rapper "XXXTentacion", whose real name was Jahseh Onfroy, was gunned down in an apparent robbery in Broward County, Florida. Authorities said he was leaving a motorsports store shortly before 4 p.m. when two men in a dark SUV shot and killed him. XXXTentacion spoke on his death before he was killed Monday. Check out what specifically he said and what the crew had to say - R.I.P.! In lighter news, Dr. Dre will be developing the Marvin Gaye movie. The film project is said to be in the early stages of planning, but the former N.W.A. star has secured the rights to Gaye's music. A number of stars, including directors F. Gary Gray and Cameron Crowe, and rocker Lenny Kravitz, have tried to develop films about the late singer in the past, but the projects never came to fruition. DRE always makin moves! Leave it to Beyoncé and Jay-Z to redefine what “pulling a Beyoncé” can be. Last Saturday, the pair headlined London Stadium as part of their joint On the Run II Tour, and at the end of their career-spanning set a message flashed on the screens: “ALBUM OUT NOW.” Everything Is Love, credited to The Carters, an exquisitely produced happy ending to the cheating-heart narrative that unspooled on Beyoncé’s gravity-defying 2016 album Lemonade and Jay-Z’s terse yet personal 2017 release 4:44. We were also graced, once again with the presence of female phenome from the DMV, Lady Dame. She was in studio updating us on her new ventures and record deal. Check her out everywhere @ladydameofficial! We got you...until next Wednesday - See What I'm Sayin!
We sit down with Austin from the band Lady Dame and The Black Boot Brothers as we get all nerdy on the best and worst scenes in the Star Wars Saga, as well as get into some spoiler territory about the new Alien movie.Continue reading
The clock is ticking on some various matters in the news this week. The first one that's that most important on the docket is the final Presidential debate. Donald Trump is bringing President Barack Obama's Kenyan-born half-brother, Malik, to Wednesday's third and final presidential debate. For 2017, Tupac "2Pac" Shakur, Janet Jackson, Pearl Jam, Chaka Khan, Chic, Jane's Addiction, and Joan Baez are being nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. If 2Pac is chosen as a member of the '17 Class, he would join N.W.A, Run-D.M.C., Public Enemy, Beastie Boys, and Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five as the only Hip-Hop acts to be enshrined. The clock is seriously ticking for Dr. Dre as singer Michel'e's Surviving Compton biopic was one of the most talked about television events of the weekend. The Lifetime movie depicted Dr. Dre as a drunken, abusive boyfriend. We also replayed our interview with Reginald "Bruh Man" Ballard @bruhman_5flo, as he discussed the passing of Tommy Ford of the MARTIN show; very emotional. Also in studio, we had local DC artist, "Lady Dame" @ladydameofficial. Check back with us to get all the latest - see what I'm sayin!
Today we had the opportunity to interview Lil Dee, an up and coming artist who gave up the street life to follow his dreams and be a great father. In our second hour we had the charismatic Lady Dame as our co-host and we talked about her career as an artist and model and the significance of "culture vultures"
