On May 25th, the legendary Indianapolis jazz trombonist Phil Ranelin will turn 86 years old. For the next three weeks on Echoes of Indiana, we'll celebrate the anniversary of Ranelin's birthday by exploring his work in music. Listen to a recent interview Ranelin recorded with WFYI's Kyle Long, along with classic recordings from his discography.  Phil Ranelin was born in Indianapolis in 1939. He grew up on the city's east side in the Martindale Brightwood neighborhood and attended Arsenal Tech High School, where jazz icon Freddie Hubbard was also a student. Nearly two decades later they would record three albums together. During the 1960s, Ranelin was active on the local jazz scene, performing with Indianapolis jazz greats like Wes Montgomery, Pookie Johnson, David Young, and Freddie Hubbard.  Around 1968, Ranelin left Indianapolis for Detroit, becoming deeply involved in the city's dynamic music scene. While in Detroit he worked as a session musician and touring performer for Motown Records, appearing with artists including Stevie Wonder and The Temptations. But it was his work with Tribe jazz collective that elevated his legacy in music.  Ranelin co-founded Tribe in the early 1970s with saxophonist Wendell Harrison. Tribe started as a musical ensemble, but soon expanded into a record label, magazine and artist collective. Their work was explicitly political, advocating for Black empowerment and self-determination. Ranelin's tenure with Tribe Records produced a number of seminal albums including “The Time Is Now” and “Vibes from the Tribe.” These recordings blended traditional jazz with funk, and avant-garde techniques, helping to redefine the boundaries of the genre. Ranelin spent much of the last 40 years, living in Los Angeles, California.  But he recently returned to his hometown Indianapolis after suffering a severe stroke in 2021.  On this week's episode, hear music from Ranelin's most recent releases, including "The Found Tapes: Live in Los Angeles,” and “Tribe 2000.”

Stevie Wonder is not just a musical legend—he's also a powerful advocate for disability rights and inclusivity. Born Stevland Hardaway Judkins in 1950, Wonder lost his sight due to complications from premature birth. Despite this, he became a child prodigy, signed to Motown Records, and went on to revolutionize music with his soulful voice, innovative compositions, and socially conscious lyrics. Beyond his musical genius, Wonder has used his platform to push for legislative change, promote accessibility, and inspire millions. He played a key role in advocating for the establishment of Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a national holiday, demonstrating his commitment to civil rights and equal opportunities for marginalized communities, including people with disabilities. He was also a strong supporter of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which was signed into law in 1990, ensuring legal protections against discrimination in employment, transportation, and public accommodations. As a blind musician, Wonder has championed adaptive technology in the music industry, encouraging the development of tools that allow blind and visually impaired artists to compose and record their work. His advocacy has paved the way for greater accessibility in the arts. Perhaps most importantly, Stevie Wonder's life and career prove that disability does not define potential. Through his activism, music, and influence, he has not only transformed the entertainment industry but also advanced disability rights and awareness worldwide.

“More Leaks,” the fourth compilation album by Baton Rouge rapper YoungBoy Never Broke Again (Kentrell Gaulden), dropped on March 7, 2025, via Never Broke Again and Motown Records, serving as a gritty send-off before his anticipated prison release later that summer. Clocking in at 48 minutes across 16 tracks, this project arrived while YoungBoy was still incarcerated, serving a 23-month sentence for federal gun charges stemming from a 2020 arrest in Louisiana, with additional legal woes tied to prescription drug fraud in Utah. Billed by his team as his “last project” before freedom, “More Leaks” compiles previously teased snippets and unreleased cuts, offering fans a raw, unfiltered glimpse into his relentless creative output despite confinement. The album kicks off with “Trapped Out,” a menacing opener that sets the tone with booming 808s and YoungBoy's signature raspy aggression, reflecting the claustrophobia of his legal battles. Tracks like “Rich Junkie” and “Cut Throat” maintain this high-octane energy, driven by producers like D-Roc and Jason “Cheese” Goldberg, who amplify the trap-heavy sound YoungBoy's built his empire on. The lead single, “5 Night,” released February 28, 2025, pairs a hypnotic beat with visuals of YoungBoy dancing beside a G-Wagon, a stark contrast to his prison reality. Posts on X from fans like @YoungboySnippet highlight the vault's depth, with one noting, “Shows how crazy his vault is man, stuff [has] been getting leaked for months and still has songs which are very good.” Indeed, the title “More Leaks” nods to this chaotic rollout, embracing the flood of unofficial releases that have kept his name buzzing. While “More Leaks” lacks the polish of albums like “Sincerely, Kentrell” (2021), it compensates with raw intensity. Tracks like “Never Stopping” and “Meet the Reaper,” briefly available before being yanked from Spotify post-leak, resurface here, satisfying diehards who've tracked his every move. The production leans minimalist—think distorted bass and eerie synths—mirroring his isolated mindset, though some criticize its lack of variety. HotNewHipHop called it a “love-it-or-hate-it album,” noting its appeal to fans craving aggression over evolution. Features are sparse, with only a rumored Lil Baby verse on “Lost Soul” making the cut, keeping the focus squarely on YoungBoy's unapologetic delivery.Thematically, “More Leaks” wrestles with fame's weight and street loyalty, though introspection takes a backseat to bravado. Lines like “I'm still thuggin' ‘til I'm gone” from “Cut Throat” underscore his defiance, a sentiment echoed in his legal saga—pleading guilty yet dodging harsher penalties via a global settlement. Billboard reported its debut at #3 on the Top Rap Albums chart, a testament to his loyal fanbase, even as critics argue it's more a stopgap than a statement. Recorded partly before his December 2024 sentencing, the album's sound quality impressed peers like engineer Jason Goldberg, who lauded similar prison-recorded efforts on the “Ray Daniels Presents” show.As of March 27, 2025, with YoungBoy reportedly released early on March 24 from Talladega, Alabama, per HipHopDX, “More Leaks” bridges his incarceration and freedom. It's not his strongest work—lacking the cohesion of “Top” (2020)—but its chaotic energy mirrors his life, making it a fitting cap to a turbulent chapter.

The Spinners' story is one of perseverance, evolution, and timeless music that continues to resonate with fans of Motown, Philly Soul, funk, and classic R&B. Their smooth harmonies, intricate vocal arrangements, and signature choreography have made them one of the most enduring groups in soul music history. From their early days in Detroit with Motown to their meteoric rise with Atlantic Records, The Spinners are true legends of the genre.Formed in the '50s in Michigan, The Spinners came together as a vocal group determined to make their mark in the burgeoning R&B scene. They found themselves signed to Motown Records in the '60s, a label that was home to acts like The Temptations, The Supremes, and Marvin Gaye. But The Spinners never quite achieved the same success as their labelmates during their time there. They struggled to break through in a roster filled with some of the biggest names in soul music.Their fate changed in the early '70s when they made a decision that would define their career. Leaving Motown, the band joined Atlantic, under the guidance of producer Thom Bell. With Bell at the helm, The Spinners recorded a string of hits that defined an era. Songs like I'll Be Around, Could It Be I'm Falling in Love, One of a Kind (Love Affair), Mighty Love, and Then Came You—their duet with Dionne Warwick—all became massive hits. Their run of success continued throughout the '70s, with classic tracks like Games People Play and Rubberband Man. The group became known not only for their vocal prowess but also for their stage presence. Their synchronized dance moves and sharp suits made them one of the most exciting live acts of the era.As time passed, The Spinners underwent several lineup changes. They continued to tour and perform, keeping their music fresh for new generations of fans. Even as the music industry evolved, The Spinners remained a staple of classic soul, their songs continuing to be played on R&B stations and featured in movies, commercials, and TV shows.Amidst the transitions, one of the most significant moments in the group's more recent history was the inclusion of Jessie Peck. A longtime fan of The Spinners, Jessie grew up admiring them as a child, wishing one day to be a part of their act. Before joining the group, Jessie had already made a name for himself as a talented vocalist with a deep appreciation for classic R&B. His rich baritone and smooth delivery made him a natural fit for The Spinners' sound, and when the opportunity arose for him to join the legendary group, it was a dream come true.Jessie's arrival injected new energy into the group while maintaining the signature style that fans had come to love. He stepped into his role with the utmost respect for the foundation laid by those who came before him. His passion for the music, combined with his natural talent and stage presence, made him a seamless addition to the lineup. As a performer, Jessie embraced The Spinners' commitment to delivering not just great music but an unforgettable show. The Spinners have always been about more than just singing—they're entertainers in the truest sense, combining tight harmonies with choreographed moves that keep audiences engaged from the first note to the last.Even after decades in the industry, The Spinners continue to thrive, bringing their soulful sound to audiences around the world. Their influence can be heard in countless artists who followed in their footsteps, and their ability to bridge generations of music lovers is a testament to the timeless nature of their songs. Jessie Peck's presence in the group is a reflection of their commitment to excellence, ensuring that The Spinners remain not just a nostalgic act but a living, breathing force in the world of soul, R&B, and classic funk.Jessie Peck joins us this week to share some amazing stories about The Spinners.#classichits #r&b #musiclegends

Laughing My Freaking Ass Off, or LMFAO as they were more commonly known - were one of the most enigmatic duos in pop music history. Formed in 2006 by Motown Records’ founder Berry Gordy’s youngest son Stefan Kendal Gordy - AKA Redfoo, and Redfoo’s half-nephew Skyler Austen Gordy - or Sky Blu (with no e, of course)... I would hazard a guess that these hyperactive nepo-babies are the single most successful Uncle-Nephew duo in all of music. As was the style at the time - Foo and Blu’s club bangers included tracks with influences from contemporary pop, hip hop, synthpop, paving the way for a somewhat mindless wave of EDM that focused on the carefree vibes of nightlife, partying, drinking, and just having a good time. After gaining a bit of a following and laying down some demos that truly distilled their party-rocking sound, Redfoo decided to show his demos off to his best friend to get his thoughts on the songs. Now, You may not be surprised to find out that Redfoo’s best friend LOVED the demos; you could even say he had a feelin’ that LMFAO were ready for the big time. Of course, I’m burying the lede here. It PROBABLY didn’t hurt that this ‘best friend’ in question, was none other than Will. I . Am. This is the story of LMFAO's 'Party Rock Anthem' with newly unearthed audio from the group.

Sticky Fingers is considered by many to be the greatest studio album the Rolling Stones ever created.  This ninth studio album represented a return to a more basic sound for the Stones after several albums with less conventional instrumentation.  It was also known for its cover artwork from Andy Warhol which featured a man in jeans with a working zipper.  The album won a Grammy for “Best Album Cover” for this innovative design. This was the first album that was released on their own label, Rolling Stones Records.  It was also the first album the group produced without Brian Jones, who had died two years earlier.  The members of the band were Charlie Watts on drums, Bill Wyman on bass, Mick Taylor on guitar, Keith Richards on guitar and backing vocals, and Mick Jagger on lead vocals and some guitar and percussion.  There were a number of session musicians and frequent collaborators involved in the album, including Bobby Keys on sax, and Billy Preston and Ian Stewart on keyboards.Sticky Fingers was the band's first album to reach number 1 on album charts in both the US and the UK.  It has since reached triple platinum status, and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999.    The album was also the first album to utilize the now-iconic “mouth”  for which the group would be known.Friend of the show Mike Fernandez joins us in Bruce's absence, while Rob brings us this amazing album from one of the giants of the rock world in this week's podcast. Wild HorsesThis softer song with a country bent was first released in 1970 by the Flying Burrito Brothers, and subsequently recorded by the Stones after originally thinking the demo wasn't worth recording.  It was originally recorded over a three-day period at Muscle Shoals Studio in Alabama in 1969.  The lyrics are about being on the road, and not being where you really want to be.Brown SugarThe opening track to the album was also the lead single, and reached the top of the charts in the US and Canada, while reaching number 2 on the UK singles chart.  The song sounds like a strong rocking one, but the lyrics discuss slavery and rape, a much more serious topic than most realized the lyrics covered.BitchThis track which leads off side two of the album was the B-side to the single “Brown Sugar.”  It has a strong brass section — the song originated in a jam, and features Bobby Keys on sax and Jim Price on trumpet.  The lyrics are describing love as a bitch but the title probably didn't help the band in its problems with women's groups.  Can't You Hear Me KnockingThis is the longest song on the album, clocking in at over seven minutes.  The central part of the song lasts for 2:43, with an extended jam following.  The entire track was captured in one take, and the band continued with the jam, thinking that the recording was complete.   ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:One Tin Soldier (from the motion picture “Billy Jack”)This counterculture song was a prominent part of the soundtrack to the action drama "Billy Jack" a part Navajo Green Beret and Vietnam War veteran defending his Freedom School students from angry townspeople. STAFF PICKS:Get It On by ChaseWayne starts out the staff picks with a high energy song from an artist known for his jazz trumpet.  Bill Chase brought together a band including three other trumpet players, a rock rhythm section, and front man Terry Richards on lead vocals.  This jazz fusion rock piece peaked at number 24 on the Billboard Hot 100.Let's Get It On by Marvin GayeLynch brings us a track that has taken on a life of its own as the ultimate romance song.  Backed by the Funk Brothers, it is the most successful song Gaye produced on Motown Records.  It reached number 1 on both the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart and the US Hot Soul Singles chart.Love Her Madly by the DoorsMike features the first single from the album “L.A. Woman,” the sixth studio album from the Doors, and the final album with Jim Morrison before his untimely death.  Guitarist Robby Krieger wrote this song while experimenting with a 12-string guitar.  It Don't Come Easy by Ringo Starr Rob finishes the staff picks with a non-album single from the drummer of the recently-disbanded Beatles.  Fellow Beatle George Harrison produced the single and helped Starr write the song which peaked at number 4 on the US and UK singles charts. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Main Theme from the motion picture “The Summer of 42”We exit this week's podcast with the signature song from this Academy Award nominee and coming-of-age movie in the theaters in April 1971. Guest: Bobby Kotick, former CEO of Activision Blizzard; and Bing Gordon, general partner at Kleiner PerkinsIn 2020, when President Trump signed the executive order that would ban TikTok in the U.S., Bobby Kotick called his old friend Steven Mnuchin. The former Secretary of the Treasury told him that, if TikTok's U.S. operations were to be sold to an American company, Microsoft would be the only bidder.A couple calls later, he reached ByteDance founder and CEO Zhang Yiming, who said he'd rather sell to Bobby than Microsoft. Concerned about his ability to get the deal done solo, Bobby called Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and offered to make a joint bid. Nadella declined, but added, “ if the deal doesn't get done, we should sit down and talk about us buying Activision.” TikTok currently remains Chinese-owned, but three years later, Microsoft paid $75 billion for Activision Blizzard.Chapters:Mentioned in this episode: Harvard-Westlake School, Alison Ressler, Vivendi, Berkshire Hathaway, Bruce Hack and Arnaud de Puyfontaine, John Riccitiello and EA, Call of Duty, Bizarre Creations, Atari, Apple II, Commodore 64, Jean-Louis Gassée, Apple Lisa, Howard Lincoln, Philips, Magnavox Odyssey, Sutter Hill Ventures, Infocom and Zork, Toys-R-Us, Howard Hughes, E. Defendants UMG Recordings, Inc., Motown Records, and Sir Lucian Grainge (collectively, the "UMG Defendants") submitted this letter in opposition to Plaintiff's March 28, 2024, letter motion filed by counsel Tyrone Blackburn. The motion seeks the Court's approval to amend the First Amended Complaint (FAC) and file a Second Amended Complaint (SAC) in the case Jones v. Combs, et al.. The UMG Defendants argue that the proposed amendment is improper and should not be permitted. The UMG Defendants assert that the Plaintiff's attempt to amend the FAC fails to meet the procedural and substantive requirements for such amendments. They contend that the Plaintiff's shifting legal theories and delays in pursuing claims have caused unnecessary procedural complications and wasted resources. As a result, the UMG Defendants respectfully request that the Court deny the Plaintiff's motion to amend the FAC and proceed with dismissing the Action based on the deficiencies outlined in prior filings.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:gov.uscourts.nysd.616406.31.0.pdf

Send us a textAlongside Boone, John Seeley (bass), Alex Wells (guitar), and Dale Myers (drums), these tight-knit guys stay connected to their homegrown roots having been around traditional instruments from a young age in piano, fiddle, and guitar instilling in them an appreciation of country-rock, bluegrass, blues, soul, and folk music. The band blends roots, blues, classic rock, soul, and, of course, Southern rock and has created an original sound reminiscent of some of the great blues-rock/Southern rock bands like the Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top and Wet Willie. They also draw inspiration from some of the all-time blues/soul greats like Muddy Waters, Leadbelly and various artists from back in the classic heyday of Motown Records.OTIS is new musical blood for a new day with heavy, melodic blues-rock riffs, soaring guitar work, a pounding rhythm section, and raw, soulful vocals from Mr. Froggett. The band embraces Southern rock's hallowed past while charting their own future.  With some of the legendary Southern rock bands winding it down or no longer in existence, OTIS is a proud, new torchbearer of the Southern rock/blues-rock heritage. The band's debut album, 2014's Tough Times:  A Tribute to John Brim, is a raw, groove-oriented, blues drenched masterpiece that got rave reviews and was a blueprint for things to come for the band. The blistering Eyes of the Sun was released in 2018 on Cleopatra Records and more than lived up to the promise of the band's debut album.  Executive produced by Grammy-winning producer Paul Nelson, who earned his stripes by playing and performing with Johnny Winter and helping Johnny win a Grammy for his highly acclaimed album, Step Back, the album solidified the band's influences into a boiling stew of rootsy, kickass, take-no-prisoners, blues-rock goodness kicked up with a bit of soul and funk spiciness.  Good musical eats to say the least. And now comes Last Fool in the Line, which is a precursor to a full album that will be released sometime hopefully sooner than later (good things take time!)  To learn more about the band, connect at https://theotisband.com/ Visit the Self-Care Institute at https://www.selfcareinstitute.com/ Support the showVisit www.creativepeacemeal.com to leave a review, fan voicemail, and more!Insta @creative_peacemeal_podcastFB @creativepeacemealpodBonfire https://www.bonfire.com/store/creative-peacemeal/Redbubble CPPodcast.redbubble.comCreative Peacemeal READING list here Donate to AhHa!Broadway here! Leslie Uggams' long-standing place in American pop culture matches that of any pop diva of similar longevity, going back all the way to her days as a child star on 1950s television variety and game shows. She won a Tony in 1967 for her performance in the musical Hallelujah, Baby, and she was the first African American woman to host her own variety show, the short-lived Leslie Uggams Show, which I, as a little homo-in-training, soaked up like a sponge! These days she's also celebrated for her participation in the Deadpool franchise and other high-profile projects. Today I've decided to shed some light on her status as a pop icon in the late 1960s, focusing on her three albums for Atlantic Records and subsequent releases in the 1970s on Dionne Warwick's Sonday Records label and Motown Records, in other words, the period from just before Hallelujah, Baby leading up to just before her starring role in the earth-shattering 1977 miniseries Roots. Uggams reveals herself to be a versatile entertainer of the first order, performing songs by everyone from Holland-Dozier-Holland to Burt Bacharach, from Jimmy Webb to Waylon Jennings, from Jon Hendricks to Jackie DeShannon, including the very first official commercial release of the Leiber and Stoller song “Is That All There Is,” a year before it became a massive hit for Peggy Lee. The episode ends with a pair of protest songs recorded in 1968. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. Guest Bio:Patrick McAndrew is the founder of Hara, a high-impact community focused on self-mastery for the self-made. He began his career as a speed-reading instructor and has since become a leading voice in attention and mental performance. Patrick's work centers on helping leaders go beyond linear learning to develop practices that strengthen focus, resilience, and intentionality. His methodologies bridge the gap between cognitive science and human-centered leadership, equipping professionals with the tools to cultivate their best selves while achieving organizational impact.Core Topics:Rethinking Productivity: Moving Beyond Willpower and Motivation: Patrick shares how traditional approaches to productivity often miss the mark by focusing on external solutions like willpower and motivation. Instead, he reveals how the real struggle is internal fragmentation—our inability to organize thoughts, emotions, and energy. His focus is on creating systems that address the root cause rather than treating the symptoms of distraction.Linear vs. Nonlinear Learning: Designing for the Modern Workforce: Through his experiences running Momentum Mind, Patrick highlights why linear learning models fail to resonate in today's fast-paced environments. He discusses how a nonlinear mentorship approach, with adaptive content and context-based problem-solving, can meet people where they are and help them address deeper challenges beyond simple skill-building.Self-Mastery for the Self-Made: Aligning Business and Personal Growth: Patrick explains why he launched Hara and the philosophy behind it: mastering the inner game of life and business simultaneously. He emphasizes that success is not just about professional achievements but aligning personal growth with business impact. Hara is designed as a community where leaders refine both their business acumen and personal mastery through shared experiences, deep mentorship, and continuous refinement. The True Value of Thought Leadership: From Information to Wisdom: In a world of information overload, Patrick argues that value no longer lies in mere data or knowledge. Instead, the focus should be on transforming that information into actionable wisdom. He shares how thought leaders can elevate their impact by cutting through noise, offering clarity, and developing insights that resonate on a deeper, more human level.Resources:Learn more about Patrick McAndrew:WebsiteLinkedInYouTubeLearn more about Josh Linkner:WebsiteYouTubeLinkedInInstagramXFacebookABOUT MIC DROP:Hear from the world's top thought leaders and experts, sharing tipping point moments, strategies, and approaches that led to their speaking career success. According to the lawsuit, Diddy threatened her and eventually lured her to a private residence, where he allegedly assaulted her physically and sexually. Parham states that he held a knife to her face, threatened her with a "Glasgow smile," and humiliated her in front of others.Further details in the lawsuit describe how Diddy, along with his associates, sexually assaulted Parham using various objects, all while threatening her life. She recounts waking up from the ordeal, grabbing a knife, and confronting Diddy in a desperate attempt to escape. Parham alleges that Diddy begged for his life during the confrontation and that she narrowly escaped after grazing him with the knife. Despite reporting the assault to local police, Parham claims that no investigation was opened, intensifying her allegations against Diddy and his associates.(commercial at 12:47)to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:Diddy is accused of raping woman as 'payback' for claiming he ordered Tupac's murder | Daily Mail OnlineIn the lawsuit filed by Rodney "Lil Rod" Jones against Diddy and associated entities, Universal Music Group (UMG) and its representatives, including Martha Brathwaite, have made significant moves to distance the label from the allegations. Jones accuses Diddy of various forms of misconduct, including an alleged shooting incident at a 2022 writing camp. In response, UMG's legal team, supported by Brathwaite's declaration, asserts that UMG and Motown Records were not responsible for organizing or providing security for the camp where the alleged shooting took place.Brathwaite's declaration clarifies that Diddy's Love Records, not UMG or Motown, oversaw and financed the camp, arguing that UMG should not be held accountable for any security failures or incidents that occurred. The case exemplifies how UMG and other corporate entities named in the lawsuit are seeking to limit their exposure and sever any implied connections to Diddy's alleged misconduct during these events. Guest Bios:Shelley Paxton: Former CMO of Harley-Davidson, Shelley left her high-powered corporate career to pursue a more meaningful path, coining the term Soulbbatical. As an author, keynote speaker, and guide, Shelley helps others redefine success on their own terms, inspiring leaders to build bold, brave, and authentic lives. Shelley's signature message—“I Quit So You Don't Have To”—is the core of her keynote and forthcoming book.Chris Schembra: Founder of the 7:47 Gratitude Experience, Chris has made a career out of helping people connect more deeply through shared experiences. From hosting intimate dinners to delivering workshops and keynotes, Chris focuses on fostering vulnerability and gratitude, encouraging organizations to build a culture of empathy and inclusion. His latest book, Gratitude Through Hard Times, delves into the transformative power of appreciation.Core Topics:Liberating Yourself from “Success-Empty” to “Success-Full”: Shelley advocates for a fundamental redefinition of success that goes beyond external accolades. Through her concept of Soulbbatical, she explores how true fulfillment comes from listening to your own voice, not society's expectations. Shelley's goal is to help professionals escape the trap of “success-empty”—having material success but feeling unfulfilled—and embrace a richer, more meaningful version of success by aligning with their core values and passions.Fostering Human Connection as a Business Strategy: Chris emphasizes that human connection should be at the heart of every business strategy. By using gratitude as a tool for fostering genuine relationships, he challenges companies to build deeper bonds between employees and clients. His 7:47 Gratitude Experience—a shared meal centered around expressing thanks—demonstrates that something as simple as asking the right question can dismantle barriers, create a sense of belonging, and ultimately drive better business outcomes. The Courage to Say “No”: One of the hardest, yet most powerful strategies for growth is learning to say no. Whether it's declining opportunities that don't align with your values or setting boundaries that protect your energy, they argue that success comes not from chasing every option, but from focusing on what truly matters. For Shelley, this principle shows up in her ability to pass on engagements that don't resonate with her core message. For Chris, it's about maintaining focus on his passion for creating meaningful connections, rather than chasing every possible business avenue. The Impact of Living Your Values Daily: A key theme in both Shelley's and Chris's stories is the importance of living authentically. From Shelley's tattoo of “Authenticity” to Chris's “Focus Equals Growth” mantra, both speakers emphasize that true success comes from daily decisions that reinforce personal values. Whether it's through their keynote messages or personal interactions, they model how consistently honoring one's principles can lead to professional success and personal satisfaction. Resources:Learn more about Shelley Paxton:WebsiteLinkedInInstagramTikTokLearn more about Chris Schembra:WebsiteLinkedInInstagramFacebookLearn more about Josh Linkner:WebsiteYouTubeLinkedInInstagramXFacebookABOUT MIC DROP:Hear from the world's top thought leaders and experts, sharing tipping point moments, strategies, and approaches that led to their speaking career success. Guest Bio:Carla Johnson is a world-renowned keynote speaker, author of ten books, and a master of connecting the dots between creative problem-solving, strategy, and customer experience. She is best known for helping leaders and organizations cultivate innovative thinking and apply it to everyday business challenges. Carla's innovative approach earned her the title of the world's leading innovation architect, working with Fortune 500 brands, startups, and associations to rethink how they innovate and achieve breakthrough results. Her latest book, Rethink Innovation, provides a roadmap for unlocking creativity and achieving bottom-line impact.Core Topics:Defining and Conquering Your "Three-Story Limit": Carla's concept of the "Three-Story Limit" is a powerful metaphor for the boundaries we often unknowingly impose on ourselves. Just as early architects believed buildings couldn't exceed three stories, people often set limits on their potential. By identifying these hidden barriers and confronting them directly, leaders and innovators can break through constraints and reach new heights, just as William LeBaron Jenney did with the world's first skyscraper.Cultivating Curiosity as a Strategic Advantage: Curiosity, according to Carla, is the foundational skill that drives all forms of creative thinking and problem-solving. By intentionally pausing to understand a problem fully and resisting the urge to jump to quick solutions, professionals can uncover unconventional insights. Carla suggests applying curiosity in structured ways, such as reframing problems, examining them from multiple perspectives, and exploring ideas to their extreme possibilities.Exposing the Hidden Costs of the Status Quo: Carla argues that maintaining the status quo often carries a hidden cost—stagnation and loss of relevance. She challenges organizations and individuals to evaluate whether their “safest” path is actually putting them at risk of obsolescence. By constantly questioning accepted norms and pushing for bold experimentation, people can unlock new growth opportunities and avoid the trap of complacency.Applying the Concept of "Expiration Dates" to Drive Continuous Reinvention: To prevent content and strategies from becoming stale, Carla introduces the idea of assigning “expiration dates” to everything from keynotes and speaker reels to messaging and business strategies. This practice encourages regular re-evaluation, keeping ideas fresh and compelling. It's not about change for the sake of change but rather about embracing a mindset of continuous renewal to remain relevant and impactful in a rapidly evolving world.Resources:Learn more about Carla Johnson:WebsiteLinkedInInstagramXLearn more about Josh Linkner:WebsiteYouTubeLinkedInInstagramXFacebookABOUT MIC DROP:Hear from the world's top thought leaders and experts, sharing tipping point moments, strategies, and approaches that led to their speaking career success. The label's legal filings aim to have UMG dismissed from the case, contending that Jones is inappropriately attempting to involve the label despite its lack of operational control or direct involvement in the events under dispute.Additionally, the legal strategy seeks to prevent the lawsuit from being amended further, with UMG lawyers arguing that any additional claims would be futile. The case exemplifies how UMG and other corporate entities named in the lawsuit are seeking to limit their exposure and sever any implied connections to Diddy's alleged misconduct during these events. Tito Jackson, born Toriano Adaryll Jackson on October 15, 1953, in Gary, Indiana, was a pioneering musician, singer, songwriter, and guitarist, most famous for his role as a founding member of the legendary Jackson 5. Growing up in a musical family, Tito's talent became apparent at a young age. He was the one who introduced the guitar to the Jackson family's sound, which soon became an essential element of their style. Alongside his brothers Jackie, Jermaine, Marlon, and Michael, Tito helped the Jackson 5 skyrocket to fame with their groundbreaking blend of pop, soul, funk, and R&B. The Jackson 5's rise to international stardom began with their signing to Motown Records in 1969, leading to a string of chart-topping hits like "I Want You Back," "ABC," "The Love You Save," and "I'll Be There." Tito's guitar work, combined with the group's tight harmonies and Michael's magnetic lead vocals, played a key role in defining their unique sound. The band's infectious energy and innovative performances broke racial barriers in the music industry and laid the groundwork for future generations of artists. When the Jackson 5 left Motown for Epic Records in 1975, they reinvented themselves as The Jacksons, allowing more creative control and deeper involvement in the songwriting and production process. Tito contributed significantly to this new phase, co-writing songs like "Torture" and "Body," which showcased his evolving artistry. The Jacksons continued their success with hit albums and world tours, solidifying their place as one of the most influential musical acts of all time. Tito Jackson's journey as a solo artist officially began in the 2000s, as he explored his passion for blues, a genre that had always resonated with him. His debut solo album, "Tito Time," released in 2016, marked his return to the spotlight, blending contemporary R&B, soul, and blues with tracks like "Get It Baby" featuring Big Daddy Kane. This album highlighted Tito's smooth vocal delivery, skilled guitar playing, and his ability to adapt his style to modern music trends while staying true to his roots. His last solo album in 2021 "Under Your Spell" was a return to his blues roots and was many years in the making. Outside of his musical pursuits, Tito Jackson became a respected figure in the music industry, mentoring aspiring musicians and producing records for other artists. He also participated in reality TV and charity events, using his platform to give back to the community and raise awareness for various causes. His dedication to philanthropy and music earned him widespread respect and admiration beyond his family's legacy. Until Tito passed away at the age of 70, in 2024, he had continued to perform live, captivating audiences both as a solo act and with his brothers in The Jacksons. His energetic stage presence and infectious charisma reminded fans of the timeless appeal of the Jackson sound. He remained a vital link to the past while continuously evolving, influencing both contemporary and classic genres. Tito Jackson's journey from the Jackson 5's soulful beginnings to his solo achievements stands as a testament to his enduring talent, adaptability, and passion for music. His legacy is not just as a member of a legendary family but as a groundbreaking artist in his own right. Through his work with The Jackson 5 and as a solo artist, Tito's songs and brilliant performances will never be forgotten. This week we pay homage to the late Tito Jackson. I spoke with him recently and in this podcast, he shares stories from his fabulous career. I hope you enjoy the episode. If you feel like reaching out to me, I'd love to hear from you.
