This week, we're diving into Set It Off with our cousins in podcasting, Anthony and Helaine from Talkin Ish': A Podcast Amongst Friends. We check whether the film still holds up more than 20 years later, debate who in our crew would play which character, and ask the important question: Did Titi really deserve an equal cut after that first robbery? We show love to director F. Gary Gray and share our Top 5 favorite Black directors. Of course, with Jason and Anthony on the mic, you know there had to be some Drake vs. Kendrick shots—though surprisingly, neither makes our ultimate bank robbery playlist.Plus, we cast our dream 2025 remake and answer the all-important question: Was It Good Though?

EPISODE #442-- We finally get around to celebrating Black History Month with the formative SET IT OFF from 1996. Directed by F. Gary Gray and staring Vivica A. Fox, Queen Latifah, Jada Pinket, and the mean doctor from Scrubs, SET IT OFF tells the story about four black women in LA pushed to their limit, who decide to start robbing banks. It's pretty fun, I don't know. We also talk about ANUJA (2024) on Netflix, Michael Mann's THIEF (1981) and MANHUNTER (1986), SAMURAI REBELLION (1967) on the Criterion Channel, PROBLEMISTA (2023), and THE KNICK on HBO Max. It's Die Hard in a police station! This week, hosts Phil and Liam are locked into a high-stakes discussion on The Negotiator - the 1998 action-thriller starring Samuel L. Jackson and Kevin Spacey in a battle of wits, words, and tactical mind games! When he becomes inveigled in a corruption scandal involving suspected embezzlement of the Chicago P.D. pension's fund, expert hostage negotiator Danny Roman (Samuel L. Jackson) decides to turn the tables and takes hostages at the Internal Affairs bureau, in an effort to find the truth and clear his name. Sensing that he has enemies in his own midst, Roman demands that the only negotiator he will speak to be Chris Sabian (Kevin Spacey), a mysterious stranger from an entirely different district. But can Sabian be trusted? And how do you negotiate your way out when everyone assumes you are the real villain? In this tightly wound pressure-cooker thriller, we break down how The Negotiator cleverly inverts the Die Hard formula - putting the good guy in control of the siege, with a besieged skyscraper, hostages, FBI interference, and a whole lot of air shaft action! We explore the film's copious Die Hard DNA, from over-the-radio showdowns and ill-fated SWAT assaults to computer hacking, power shutdowns, and even a debate about old Western movies between the two adversaries! We also highlight the killer supporting cast, the film's “Glengarry with Guns” energy, and why F. Gary Gray deserves more love! Plus, we dig into the importance of the Chicago setting and discuss how the film channels The Fugitive with its “wrongly accused” narrative - shoutout to Andrew Davis! Chicago forever! As usual we hand out our Die Hard Oscars to worthy candidates and wrap things up with some ‘Double Jeopardy' brain teasers!THE NEGOTIATOR trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YnSk9xrOf2MAt the time of release, THE NEGOTIATOR is streaming on Amazon Prime Video in the UK. Two prominent Black filmmakers put their unique touches on the heist film genre. The early work F. Gary Gray does with Set It Off (1996) shows that you can combine character development with high action heists. The "unnicknamed" Walt Hickey and Kim Bhasin return to the podcast as we hack and fly our way through The Fate of the Furious! It's been four weeks since our last train fact, so we scratch that itch before discussing how this movie begins to show the cracks behind the scenes. We wonder where F. Walt breaks down Hobbs's soccer strategies. Joe asks about the "Tay Tay" situation. Kim shares the most wrestling moment and Walt shares the most D&D moment. We miss an opportunity to call out Dom for "daddy jacking" the movie. Does Cipher have long-term plans for Dom? Why are we seeing so much technology and hacking in movies today? Jason Teasley and Mark Radulich present their The Friday Trilogy Movie Review. Friday is a stoner comedy film franchise created by Ice Cube and DJ Pooh. The series takes place in South Central Los Angeles and follows the exploits of perpetually unemployed Craig Jones, who, along with his friends and relatives, is thrust into various issues that happen to occur on a Friday.Three films have been released. The first film, Friday (1995), was a sleeper hit and has garnered a large cult following. The film's success led to two sequels, Next Friday (2000) and Friday After Next (2002), which were also box office successes.
