The news of Texas covered today includes:Our Lone Star story of the day: Abbott says we'll pass school choice without the big handout, offered last time, to the ISD bureaucracies. The governor points out that when offered billions last time around the ISDs wouldn't play ball so too bad. But the real reason we should not hand more big money to the administrative machines of government school districts is the continued failure of those schools to deliver good results: Texas Students' Test Scores Shrink as Spending Grows.Meanwhile, Democrats keep talking about “billionaires” instead of parents and students. Also, they maintain their position that students in really bad schools should continue to be captive to such with no real alternative. Our Lone Star story of the day is sponsored by Allied Compliance Services providing the best service in DOT, business and personal drug and alcohol testing since 1995.Texas sales tax receipts come in much stronger than last month.Texas Secretary of State Office of Elections decertifies E-Pollbook system from ES&S.Listen on the radio, or station stream, at 5pm Central. Every year at Halloween in the United States, amidst the usual vampires, witches, wizards, and superheroes, you may see a few costumes inspired by the Mexican tradition of Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. If you aren't familiar with this tradition, you might wonder about the significance of the floral crowns and beautifully painted skulls. Although the movie Coco recently brought Día de los Muertos into the public eye, Americans who are not of Mexican descent may still be confused about the celebration. Is this just how they do Halloween in Mexico? Or is Día de los Muertos the same as All Souls' Day? On this episode of Glad You Asked, scholar and educator Mathew Sandoval talks about the origin of this colorful and evocative tradition. Sandoval is a cultural historian and performance studies scholar whose research focuses on Día de los Muertos in history and popular culture. He is an associate teaching professor at Barrett the Honors College in Downtown Phoenix, where he teaches interdisciplinary seminars on art, culture, race, history, and activism. He also has a professional career as a performing artist, storyteller, poet, and filmmaker. **Embracing the Seasons of Change: A Fresh Perspective on Nonprofit Growth with Michael Randall** In an enlightening episode of our nonprofit-focused podcast, we had the pleasure of speaking with Michael Randall, the visionary founder and director of Randall Consulting Associates. Michael, a distinguished member of the nonprofit ISD network, shared his innovative framework known as the "Seasons of Change," offering a fresh lens through which nonprofits can view growth and development. **Seasons of Growth: A Gardener's Approach to Nonprofit Expansion** Michael introduced a compelling metaphor likening nonprofit growth to the cyclical process of gardening. This approach breaks down into three key phases: Preparing, Cultivating, and Harvesting. Each stage demands specific actions and considerations, mirroring the thoughtful stewardship of a gardener tending to their land with an eye towards both present vitality and future sustainability. **Preparing Phase: Setting the Stage for Growth** In the preparing phase, organizations are encouraged to assess their current resources and readiness for expansion, much like a gardener evaluates their land before planting. This involves identifying and addressing potential obstacles and ensuring the necessary infrastructure and support systems are in place. **Cultivating Phase: Nurturing Development** During cultivation, the focus shifts to actively supporting and nurturing growth. This means not only expanding services and outreach but also strengthening internal processes, staff capabilities, and organizational culture to sustain increased scale and complexity. **Harvesting Phase: Reaping and Reflecting on Success** The final phase emphasizes consolidating gains and integrating new developments into the organization's ongoing operations. It's a time for reflection, celebration of achievements, and strategic planning for the next cycle of growth. **Challenges and Insights: Beyond Quick Fixes in Fundraising** Michael critically addressed the common pitfalls of rapid expansion, particularly the dangers of scaling up too quickly in response to sudden influxes of funding, such as those from generous donors like Mackenzie Scott. He stressed the importance of holistic growth that enhances the quality and comprehensiveness of services, rather than merely expanding for expansion's sake. **A Call to Action: Embracing a Holistic View of Growth** The conversation with Michael Randall serves as a call to action for nonprofit leaders to adopt a more nuanced and strategic approach to growth. By embracing the "Seasons of Change" framework, organizations can ensure they are not only expanding their reach but also deepening their impact and securing their sustainability for the future. **Conclusion: Nurturing Sustainable Growth in the Nonprofit Sector** Michael Randall's insights into the "Seasons of Change" offer invaluable guidance for nonprofits navigating the complexities of growth and development. By adopting a gardener's mindset, organizations can cultivate a thriving future that honors their mission and serves their communities effectively.

Prospect Questions – Part 2Q1 – Greg K. (Patreon)1.Prospect cut-down day after FYPDs is always tricky. Any thoughts on the general makeup of your prospects? For example, do you lean a certain percentage hitter vs. pitcher? Floor vs. upside? Positional need vs. best players available? Thanks, Rich!Q2 – Bob K (Patreon)Darren Bowen was one of the prospects traded to the Twins as part of the Polanco deal. I had not heard much, if anything, about him until now. Curious as to your thoughts. Thanks!Q3 – John D (Patreon)My favorite thing on the Patreon service is your breakdown of players using baseballsavant. I've learned so much, but still have a long way to go. You've mentioned several times that if a player adds loft, they could also see an increase in their strikeout rate. Why is this? Thanks and keep up the great work.Q4 – Jon Dean (Patreon)Would like to hear a breakdown of the top college prospect, JJ Weatherholt. Is he a Gunnar Henderson type or a Bryson Stott type? West Virginia minds are inquiring. Q5 - Matt D (Patreon)1.What happened to Jacob Berry? They don't give $6M bonuses to just anyone. 2.Is D.J. Herz a closer in waiting? And should I care?Q6 - Mike H (Patreon)1.Hey rich, what would you do in dynasty with prospects who are no longer prospects. For me I have guys like Alec Burleson, Mark Vientos, Jordan Diaz and Drew Waters. These are four edge cases I have to make choices on. I can see scenarios where maybe one of them breaks out but it's so hard, especially with a competitive team. Thanks!Q7 - Dustin P (Patreon)1.How about Paul Skenes. I want him in a dynasty league but he's with the pirates and that scares me. I'm leaning towards taking Dylan Crews.Q8 - Albert C (Patreon)1.Over the next 5 years who has 1st round upside with an adjustment to their profile? You were so good in pointing out Acuna before most. Who are we etching into our wood tables?

Do we need to concede that we'll never be able to accurately measure the impact of our soft skills development solutions? If so, that's an enormous amount of spending without knowing if we're making enough of a difference. In this episode, we discuss how it is possible to plan, design and deliver for real impact and how this is already working. KEY TAKEAWAYS Tell people upfront how what they learn applies to their job. Use proprietary internal knowhow to plug content gaps. Have people practice what they learn. Improve 1st line management training. Understand outputs and how they are measured. If processes are not being followed by top performers, the processes are wrong. L&D needs to develop too, to set an example. BEST MOMENTS'We do too much one size fits all.' Sony finds itself in a pickle, or so it seems from the outside. With ever-burgeoning development costs comes the reality that new IP is an increasingly-risky endeavor. The safer and more reliable route, it could be argued, is in doubling-down on what works. And let's be real: Guerrilla-developed Horizon works. The two core games have sold 33 million units combined across PS4, PS5, and PC. The question, though, is how much does Horizon work? Could a good thing become a bad thing through simple repetition? This week, we discuss the future of Horizon (not to mention the past of Killzone) via reporting from an enlightening panel conducted with the leadership of Guerrilla, and we're forced to confront a reality where Horizon never truly disappears. Other notable news this week includes the retirement of legendary Naughty Dog co-president Evan Wells, The Last of Us' ridiculously successful run of Emmy nominations, Sony's new investments into live service, and more. Inquiries from the audience end the show, as usual. What does SEGA's unionization mean for the future of industry labor? Can 2D games simply be too difficult for some people to handle? Is D&D more nerdy than anime? If you had to stop at a gas station right now, what would be your go-to snack and drink choices? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
