The founders of 42 Below Vodka, Justine and Geoff Ross are a controversial pair within the farming world.  In 2017, the pair sold their company and bought a farm, aiming to change the model and confront the climate crisis, establishing Australasia's only climate positive farm.  Geoff told Newstalk ZB's Mike Hosking that despite the controversy, most of what they saw and felt was positive.  “We got huge numbers of messages of support from pretty much every agricultural company in the country,” he said.  “A huge number of farmers wanting to visit and exchange knowledge.”   Their South Island farm is 6,500 hectares, holding 10,000 merino sheep and 280 angus beef cattle.  “We were naïve,” Justine told Hosking with a laugh.  “Although we come from farming backgrounds, we'd never, we don't know anything about sheep and beef farming.”  The pair fell in love with the property, realising that it provided the opportunity for them to pursue their goal in farming in a climate positive way.  “We emit two-and-a-half thousand tons of greenhouse equivalent and we sequester, we remove five-and-a-half thousand tons.”   Justine and Geoff detail their experiences in their new book “Meet You At The Main Divide.”  “If you read the book,” Justine told Hosking. “You will see that there was a bumpy road.”  “It hasn't been easy.”  LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Tell Me What I Am by Una Mannion: Deena Garvey is a loving mother to her daughter Ruby until she suddenly goes missing. Her relationship was difficult and her sister is convinced that Lucas, Deena's former partner, is to blame – but he has a cast iron alibi and nobody will listen. He takes Ruby far away and deliberately alienates her from her mother's family until one day, years later, she unexpectedly receives a package which forces her to question everything and sets events in motion which finally reveal some answers. It's a beautifully nuanced mystery, carefully unspooled, and I loved it.  Meet You at the Main Divide by Justine Ross with Geoff Ross: Justine and Geoff are the entrepreneurs who started the vodka company 42 Below and then I think also Ecoya candles. In 2017 they left their comfortable Herne Bay existence behind and bought Lake Hawea Station, with a huge sense of purpose about how they wanted to engage with the land, and to figure out whether it's possible to farm sustainably and make a profit. They took on 6500 hectares of high country land and are running 10,000 merino sheep; and in addition to the farming have developed a significant tourism business. It's a fascinating insight into some clever people who genuinely wanted to try and do things differently from the traditional ways of farming - and got a lot of flak for it from both neighbours in the area and the wider farming community. Much of this is really inspiring.  LISTEN ABOVE  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

He's completing a PhD on seaweed carbon sequestration, he's also co-founder of CarbonZ, a company offering voluntary carbon credits based on the restoration and planting of native trees on New Zealand farmland. He's the son of entrepreneurs Geoff and Justine Ross, owners of Lake Hawea Station, New Zealand's first carbon positive farm. Kathryn meets the founders of a new organisation of young people from the food and fibre industry who want radical change in the farming sector. Future Farmers is co-founded by Finn Ross and Aimee Blake, two young farmers, academics and activists who have drawn together a group of like-minded young people from across the political spectrum to create a manifesto for the issues they wish to see addressed. Issues like agricultural emissions, climate mitigation, species loss, a struggling strong wood sector, high levels of farmer suicide and unswimmable rivers. Finn Ross is the founder of Carbon NZ - a carbon credit trading network, he's a Deakin University PhD candidate, investigating seaweed as a natural climate solution and lives on Lake Hawea Station - the first certified carbon zero farm in Australasia. Aimee Blake is completing her second master's degree at Lincoln University, specialising in agribusiness and researching sustainable food system transformation. She has a background in food marketing and is the sixth generation on her familys small farm in Waiau Pa, south of Auckland. It was during a Climate lecture at a US University where he first had the realisation of climate anxiety, to realise that its not one of the issues of the century it's the issue of now! When we unpacked the topic of robust family conversations and debates over the dinner table, Finn shared that there have been quite a mix as of late including cultural debates, farm debates, the use of land at Lake Hawea Station and future regen projects. Finn has some strong calls for action from our community to understand climate change and the intergenerational impact.
