Roy Tuscany is the Founder and CEO of the High Fives Foundation. On April 26, 2016 Roy overshot a ski jump and was paralyzed with a spinal cord injury. Six years later, and a year and a half after I was paralyzed, Roy and I connected for the first time. I had read an article about High Fives in Powder, a ski magazine and was jolted by the energetic vibe of the organization - it felt like something different. One of my closest friends also met Roy at an industry event. He immediately called me up and said you need to talk to this guy. In our first conversation, Roy told me about Tony Schmeising, a man who has been living as a quadriplegic for 40 years, and his expedition to Alaska to go Heli skiing. Roy then said, "you're next". I laughed nervously and said OK, while thinking to myself that it was a ridiculous suggestion. How was I going to do that with my recently acquired disability? Fast forward 12 years and High Fives has awarded me with grants for adaptive sports equipment, covered adaptive surf competition fees, and supported some of my earliest adaptive ski lessons with Vermont Adaptive. High Fives has also grown tremendously in that time and is now a leading organization in the catastrophic injury and disability community. At least half of our previous guests have received support from High Fives and and of course High Fives is the presenting sponsor of The Unexpected Journey. In this conversation, we skip over Roy's story of his ski accident that resulted in a spinal cord injury, paralysis, and the founding of High Fives. A quick Google search will produce dozens of podcasts and articles on both of those topics. Instead, Roy and I explore healing, leadership, parenting, taking ownership of one's life, and trauma, including sexual abuse. If you or someone you know has experience sexual abuse or you suspect they are, please know that you are not alone and that safe confidential support from a professional is immediately available at the national sexual assault telephone hotline 1-800–565–HOPE or 4673. How do you become a great instructor? No instructor or guide wants to be mediocre. Few students or guests want their instructor to deliver an average performance. This would hardly improve learning, create great stories or build positive memories. So how can instructors, coaches and guides be great? One person who has worked extremely hard to become consistently great at instructing and guiding is Cyril Shokoples. Cyril is an ACMG / IFMGA Mountain Guide and a past president of the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides. Cyril is also an EMS instructor, and an Open Water Scuba Instructor. Cyril specializes in teaching high angle rope rescue, avalanche safety, avalanche search and rescue, wilderness emergency care and mountaineering skills.Cyril has been training Canadian Forces Search and Rescue Technicians, known as SAR Techs, for over thirty-five years. He was also responsible for the creation of the Parks Emergency Responder program for national park wardens in Canada. When he is not teaching, Cyril has been working extensively in the guiding industry as a climbing and Heli-ski guide.Cyril joins Chris and Jordy to share key strategies and philosophies that can help anyone to be become better at instructing and guiding. If you work hard, Cyril's advice might even help you to become great!Key TakeawaysHow can we become great instructors and guides?Start by Aspiring to Great: If you want to be great, you have to want to be great in the first place. We generally become what we aspire to be. If your goal is to be merely average then that's likely what you will end up delivering.Prepare Like a Professional: This can sometimes require us to spend longer getting ready for what we are going to be instructing or guiding, than it is actually going to take us. Preparation should involve anticipating anything that can happen like the questions that might be asked, or anything that could go wrong.Practice With Purpose: This can involve mixing up how we do things including trying out new ways of explaining or presenting information. It also involves reflecting on how we did after the fact with the goal being to learn how we could do it even better in the future. If we keep doing the same thing without reflecting on how we can make it great, we can expect to get results that are more likely to be mediocre.Ask People for Their Advice: Don't underestimate the fact that people like to share what they know. This is a human need that most people have. When Presenting: Try to stay calm, be dynamic, engage the group you are dealing with and add fun where possible.Guest BioCyril Shokoples started his career as a scout leader over forty years ago. In the dynamic world of machining, efficiency and precision are paramount. Most of the machining allowance is removed during rough cuts. Therefore, increasing productivity at this stage is crucial for reducing the machining costs of the entire manufacturing process. Even with improved capabilities in precise forging, die-casting, injection moulding, and other workpiece production methods that allow for obtaining a workpiece very close to the part's final shape, a high metal removal rate during rough cutting continues to be an important factor in reducing total costs. ISCAR has consistently pushed the boundaries to provide solutions that meet the ever-evolving demands of manufacturing. One of ISCAR's standout innovations is the Fast Feed line of tools designed to enhance productivity while maintaining exceptional precision. Fast Feed tools by ISCAR are designed to operate at high feed rates, significantly reducing machining time and increasing productivity. The concept hinges on the principle of shallow depth of cut combined with high feed, allowing for rapid material removal without compromising surface finish or tool life. This approach is particularly beneficial in roughing operations, where the primary goal is to remove as much material as possible in the shortest time. ISCAR's Fast Feed tools are engineered with advanced geometries that optimise chip evacuation and reduce cutting forces. This results in less wear and tear on both the tool and the machine, extending their lifespan. The Fast Feed tools are suitable for a wide range of materials, including steels, stainless steels, cast irons, high-temperature superalloys (HTSA), and titanium. This versatility makes the tools an attractive option for industries such as aerospace, automotive, and mould and die, where diverse materials are often encountered. By allowing for higher feed rates, Fast Feed tools significantly reduce machining time. This efficiency results in cost savings and increased throughput, which are essential in high-volume production environments. While primarily focused on roughing, ISCAR's Fast Feed tools are also designed to achieve suitable surface finishes, minimising the need for secondary operations and further enhancing productivity. The combination of advanced cutting tool materials, wear-resistant coatings, and optimised geometries ensure that Fast Feed tools have a long tool life, even under the demanding conditions of high-speed machining. Fast Feed tools are making significant impacts across various industries. In aerospace, where difficult-to-cut materials like titanium and HTSA are common, these tools help address the challenges of machining tough materials. In the automotive sector, they enable manufacturers to meet the fast-paced production demands while maintaining high quality. The mould and die industry also benefits from reduced machining times and improved surface finishes, which are crucial for producing complex shapes with high precision. ISCAR offers a comprehensive selection of advanced cutting tools, including fast-feed turning and grooving tools. These tools are designed to enhance productivity, efficiency, and precision in various machining operations. Fast Feed Turning Tools (Fig.1) l High Feed Rates: These tools enable increased feed rates, thereby reducing machining cycle times. l Durable Materials: Constructed from high-quality materials to withstand high-speed machining conditions. l Precision Cutting: Engineered for accuracy, ensuring precise cuts with minimal tool wear. l Versatility: Suitable for a variety of materials and applications, offering great flexibility. Fast Feed Grooving and Parting Tools (Fig.2) l High-Speed Performance: Designed to perform at high speeds, improving the overall efficiency of grooving operations. l Reduced Cycle Times: High feed capabilities allow for quicker material removal, reducing overall cycle times. l Enhanced Tool Life: Made from durable materials that extend the life of the tool, even under demanding conditions. l Consistent Quality: Ensures consistent performance and high-quality results in various grooving applications. ISCAR also provides an extensive range of fast feed milling tools designed to significantly increase efficiency and productivity. These tools are specifically engineered to deliver high material removal rates and reduce cycle times in various milling operations. Fast feed (FF) milling cutters are a key factor in high feed milling (HFM) techniques. The cutter geometry, designed for efficient chip thinning, must ensure the correct distribution of the cutting force. There are two principal geometrical approaches. The first design requires the cutting edge of an FF milling cutter to be an arc of a circle. Another concept is based on using one or two straight edges that are chords of the arc. In both cases, the small cutting edge angle (usually 9-17°) meets the requirements of chip thinning and decreasing the total bending load on a tool. Ensuring the geometry of solid carbide fast feed endmills and replaceable milling heads demands the specific shape of a cutting edge, while in indexable milling, it may be provided by the appropriate location of an insert of even a simple profile. Although the introduction of innovative grades and advances in chip forming rake faces have improved progress in FF milling cutters, the essential element, the geometry, remains constant. If the cutting edge of an FF milling cutter is the arc of a circle (or the chords that approximate the arc), the cutting edge angle of the cutter is not a constant value but varies depending on the axial depth of cut from 0 to the mentioned 9-17°. In milling, the chip thickness is a function of the tool's cutting edge angle. Under the same conditions, the smaller the cutting edge angle, the thinner the chip. Therefore, the programmed feed should be increased correspondingly to produce chips of the required thickness. Features of ISCAR Fast Feed Milling Tools (fig.3) l High Feed Rates: These tools are designed to operate at high feed rates, allowing for faster machining processes and reduced cycle times. l Durable Structure: Made from high-quality materials that ensure durability and long tool life, even under demanding conditions. l Precision and Stability: It is engineered to provide precise and stable cuts, minimise tool wear, and improve the quality of the finished product. l Versatile Applications: It is suitable for a wide range of materials and applications and offers great flexibility in use. l Innovative Design: It incorporates advanced geometries and coatings to enhance performance and chip evacuation, reduce heat generation, and increase tool life. Popular Product Families l HELI-6-FEED: Known for its double-sided indexable inserts, offering high feed rates and excellent performance in various milling applications. l NEOFEED: Specifically designed for high feed milling, these tools carry cost-beneficial double-sided square inserts with 8 indexable cutting edges, providing outstanding material removal rates. l MULTI-MASTER: This modular system with interchangeable heads allows for quick and easy tool changes, enhancing productivity and reducing downtime. ISCAR's Fast Feed tools exemplify the company's commitment to providing innovative solutions that address the real-world challenges faced by manufacturers. ISCAR's Fast Feed tools are a testament to the company's forward-thinking approach and dedication to enhancing machining efficiency. As industries continue to demand faster, more precise, and cost-effective solutions, ISCAR's innovations in fast feed technology are set to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of manufacturing.

I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Tuesday morning, the 22nd of April, 2025, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We start in the Book of Luke 3 and I am not going to read that chapter. I would like you to read it, but that whole chapter is the family tree of our Lord Jesus Christ, starting from verse 23 - Luke 3:23. “Now Jesus Himself began His ministry at about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, the son of Heli, the son of Matthat, the son of Levi, the son of Melchi,…”Do you know that that family tree goes all the way back? You will see in verse 38: “… the son of Enosh, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God.” That is the family tree of our beloved Lord Jesus Christ. If you go to the Book of John 15:5, the Lord says Himself: “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit…” I am talking today about the family tree. Maybe you are sitting there and you are saying, “Angus, I am an orphan. I don't have any family. Maybe your family has rejected you, maybe your family has died and you feel that you have got nothing. I want to tell you that if you are a born-again Christian, you are not an orphan. You are a son or a daughter of the Living God. Family trees are important to people. I think I have told you before, my family comes from Scotland. My mother's mother was a Livingstone. Have you ever heard of David Livingstone? Of course you have. Well, she came from the West Coast of Scotland and that's where David Livingstone comes from. I would like to believe that I am related to that man who was partly responsible for abolishing the slave trade in Africa. My dad's mother was a Finney, her maiden name was Finney. Have you heard of Charles Finney, the great American revivalist who won many, many souls to Christ? That is my family. I don't know whether it is direct or not, it doesn't matter, but ultimately and more importantly, I am a child of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, my sins have been forgiven, I have got a family tree, a future that I can look forward to. What about you? Let's pray together.Dear Lord Jesus,Today, I am sorry that I think I am an orphan. I am not an orphan, I am a son of the Living God, I am a daughter of the Living God. That is my inheritance and when I get home, you are not going to say to me, “Welcome friend”, You are going to say, “Welcome home, son or daughter of the Living God.” That is something to look forward to.God bless you and goodbye.

Henry Patten and Harri Heliövaara join the podcast (and officially become re-occuring guests on this weeks show! Last year they shocked the tennis world and became the Wimbledon Doubles Champions just months after teaming up for the first time, and just one month ago they won yet another major title in Australia. The tandem recaps how they were able to come together and go another sensational run to glory, and explain what made the difference in that epic final match. Patten and Heliövaara also point out why the post match celebration in the early morning Melbourne hours was not what you would expect it to be, but still remains an iconic memory. The team with two major trophies also discuss how they attack the practice courts, their methods for processing losses & adversity, and why chasing the top ranking in doubles is on their radar. It's an honest and fun conversation with two players that have stormed onto to the tennis scene, becoming a great duo on the court and fast friends off of it. Hosted by Mitch Michals.

Heli Nehama-Ozery, an expert in leadership development and organizational design, dives into the transformative power of feedback in leadership. From strategies for giving and receiving feedback to using it as a catalyst for growth, Heli shares her insights on creating cultures that thrive on learning, reflection, and effective communication. Key Quotes from Heli Nehama-Ozery "Feedback is the most marvelous leadership tool that is usually not used enough or correctly. It elevates performance by providing an outside perspective." "The real control comes from asking questions, not from what you say. Questions let you understand where the other person is and build better communication." "When we put growth and learning as our main focus, that's where real behavioral change happens." In this episode, Heli Nehama-Ozery explores the art and science of feedback as a leadership tool. She explains how to overcome common fears around giving and receiving feedback, the importance of separating facts from interpretations, and using feedback to unlock individual and team growth. Heli also discusses actionable ways to improve communication, self-awareness, and organizational learning. Find your Catalyst at https://findmycatalyst.com 5 Key Takeaways 1. The Power of Feedback in Leadership Feedback reveals blind spots that improve individual and team performance. Fear often prevents leaders from delivering feedback; preparation can overcome this. Intentional feedback strengthens relationships when approached with empathy. 2. Receiving Feedback with Openness Focus on extracting actionable insights, even if the delivery is flawed. Use Stephen Covey's Circle of Influence to identify what's within your control. Ask clarifying questions to fully understand feedback and avoid emotional reactions. 3. Giving Feedback Effectively Prepare the recipient to avoid triggering defensive responses. Combine facts and interpretations while remaining open to discussion. Encourage reflection with specific, actionable examples to build understanding. 4. The Role of Communication in Feedback Silence is a tool; give space for the recipient to think and process. Differentiate between fact-based observations and subjective interpretations. Tailor feedback to the recipient's communication and processing style. 5. Cultivating a Growth-Oriented Feedback Culture Balance strengths and areas for improvement; aim for a 50/50 focus. Use feedback to highlight positive behaviors for team-wide learning. Leaders must model lifelong learning and embrace feedback to inspire teams. Dana Flahr wasn't born to be the big mountain slayer he worked so hard to become. Growing up in a single-mom household, things were a struggle, but one thing Dana's mom figured out was how to get him on the mountain and from there his passion took over. Moving to Whistler at 17, Dana didn't party; he skied daily, honing his big mountain skills in the winter and building his trick vocabulary in the summer. That combination got him a tryout with TGR, where he sent it harder than almost anyone in their movies then. Over the years, he's won Powder Awards, earned the respect of the best in the business, and banged out video jaw-dropping TGR segments and more each season. Eventually, burnout got the best of Dana, and he disappeared. We talk about it all and more on the podcast.
