How to create a hard working team to deliver more is about creating motivating ENVIRONMENTS rather than increasing pressure. More team hours worked often does not move the “value produced” dial much UNLESS you combine it with another important action.  I share 4 approaches that motivate your team to work hard because they WANT to work hard --- ---  The goals and expectations you set for a team determine how hard they will work. It is like telling a runner they have a race the next day or telling a runner they have a 10km race the next day and they need to finish it within 45mins. Goals drive planning, which in turn drives work levels. Goals are part of the picture to persuade your team to work hard. There is a art to setting goals. Setting any arbitrary goal won't motivate and might even be de-motivating.  You want your team to WANT to work harder. Trying to force them or pressurise them to work hard rarely works on its own. If fact you often get less work i.e. it is counterproductive. A hard working team that creates a lot of value chooses to work hard.    A team will only work as hard as its manager. If you don't work hard, there is zero chance of your team working hard. What you WORK ON is just as important. Show you are working for the team rather than for you.  The leader of a team has a HUGE influence on the success of a team. The leader creates the environment, the rules and the expectations. It is like a micro-climate within a larger climate (or company culture). There is a ton of thing you can do to push your team to work harder while motivating them, keeping them very happy, and significantly increasing the value produced by the team. Finally, nothing stops a person working harder than when they feel unfairly treated. Balance is really important. Children's book author, Julia Donaldson, is under fire for the language used in her book, The Highway Rat. In it she writes ‘The highway rat grew horribly fat from eating up everyone's dinner.' This has been highlighted online by body image speaker Alex Light who says she won't be reading that line to her son, even though she loves the author. I want to know what you think. Should children's authors be more mindful about the language they use? Should we be combing through our best-loved fairy tales to make sure they're not insulting or insensitive? Or is that all a bit OTT? They are only stories after all. A Sunday morning sermon by Pastor Brett Deal.Can you imagine what it must have been like in Jerusalem when the wise men showed up? Children fetching water. Merchants selling in the market. Scribes dutifully copying the biblical scrolls for synagogues near and far. Priests serving in the Temple. Meanwhile, King Herod, is looking over his shoulder to see what family member he needs to kill next. Like a neurotic groundhog, whenever Herod saw his shadow, someone suspiciously drowned, was strangled, or ended up in a vat of honey. Maybe that day started out like any other…that is until these foreign wise men rolled into town seeking a royal audience, searching for the new king of the Jews. This sent Herod—the current king of the Jews—into a rage, and everybody in Jerusalem felt it (Matthew 2.3)!Upsetting news like this required a general assembly of the religious elites. Herod called for the chief priests and scribes to reveal through their scrolls where this Messiah was to be born (2.4). Steeped in Scripture, they unveiled the answer from Micah the prophet (Micah 5.2). They knew the promise of the Messiah, foretold to David who would reign over God's people forever (2 Samuel 7.14). He would be a Shepherd King (2 Samuel 5.2), born in Bethlehem, the little hamlet of David's own birth.How unnerving it must have been to tell the temperamental Herod the answer to his question! The stark contrast must have been unsettling to share. According to Leslie Allen, “It is within this drab frame of royal misfortune that Micah sets a glorious picture of royal majesty. The figure of failure of verse one stands as a foil to his radiant counterpart here.” The Lord was bringing a true king for His people, a Shepherd King for His sheep in Israel and among all nations (Micah 7.14-15; John 10.16). If you're Herod, or someone benefiting from his governance, this news spells disaster. But, if you are poor, seeking relief, oppressed in search of solace, if you are wise men from the East following a star, this is absolutely good news! The Advent of the Messiah is the promise of a Shepherd who cares, who brings healing with His touch and peace in His reign (Malachi 4.2; Matthew 11.28-30).
