What Wine Can Teach Us About Parenting, Pressure & Letting Go with Danielle Frank

What do wine and parenting have in common? More than you think. In this insightful and surprisingly funny conversation, Lisa sits down with luxury wine expert and author Danielle Frank to explore how the language of wine can help us rethink how we raise humans. From control and expectations to identity, independence, and imperfection—this episode challenges modern parenting norms and reminds us that growth isn't about perfection… it's about becoming. What We Explore: Why kids (like wine) need space to breathe The hidden pressure of “perfect parenting” How expectations can quietly damage relationships Why community—not control—raises healthy humans The power of letting go and trusting the process What “faults” teach us about identity and resilience Standout Moments: “The majority of your relationship with your child will be with them as an adult.” “Sometimes the best thing you can do… is step back and let it breathe.” “We teach kids how to behave—but also what to expect from others.” “It's not failure. It's evolution.” “Imperfection doesn't ruin the bottle—it makes it unique.” About Danielle: Danielle Frank is a luxury wine and spirits expert with over 20 years of experience, including leadership roles at Moët Hennessy and Bacardi. She is the author of A Wine Lover's Guide to Parenting—a witty, insightful book that blends wine terminology with real-life parenting wisdom.

Send us Fan MailA toxic job can teach you more in three months than a “dream role” can teach you in six years. Danielle Frank knows that firsthand. She started as a Miramax Films PR insider traveling the world for premieres and festivals, then moved to Los Angeles and walked straight into an agency culture that made her body scream “nope.” That moment becomes the spark for a bigger conversation about listening to yourself even when your career looks successful from the outside, and how “embracing the pivot” can lead you to the work you were meant to do.Danielle takes us from Bacardi to Moët Hennessy and into the heart of wine storytelling: the romance, the memories, and the history that shows up in every glass. We also geek out on what makes wine feel intimidating and how she tries to make wine knowledge simple and accessible, including a great detour into the legacy behind Veuve Clicquot and why story is sometimes the best pairing. Then we get into her book, A Wine Lover's Guide to Parenting, a humor-forward read that uses wine terms to deliver real lessons about raising decent humans. We talk manners, consistency, tough love, and the hard truth that sometimes your kid might be the one causing harm outside the home. We also explore what it means to be a nurturing adult even if you are not a parent, plus the idea of productive struggle and why letting kids fall safely can build confidence over time.If you like honest parenting talk with a sharp sense of humor and you want a fresh take on wine culture and connection, hit play, share this with a fellow parent or wine lover, and subscribe so you do not miss what we do next. "Just because the path of motherhood might not happen for me, it doesn't mean the nurturing goes away. I still want a seat at the table for how kids are raised." — Danielle Frank About This Episode Danielle Frank traded Hollywood red carpets for red wine — and now she's poured both passions into her debut book. After launching her career in entertainment publicity at Miramax International, where she worked on global film campaigns and rubbed elbows with A-listers at Cannes, Venice, and Berlin, Danielle pivoted into the luxury wine and spirits industry, spending 22+ years at Bacardi and Moët Hennessy. Her book, A Wine Lover's Guide to Parenting: The Fine Art of Wine & Whine Management, is a satirical, adults-only survival guide written in rhyme that blends wine terminology with parenting wisdom. Despite not being a parent herself, Danielle — a self-described "auntie extraordinaire" — brings a sharp, loving outsider's perspective to the comedy of raising kids. Mike and Danielle talk career pivots, the storytelling parallels between film and wine, game show obsessions, Billy Joel, and why you should never let your kid ferment. Key Takeaways 1. It's all storytelling. Whether selling a film at Cannes or a bottle of wine at dinner, Danielle sees the through-line: you're creating a narrative that evokes feeling. That insight carried her from Miramax to Moët Hennessy. 2. You don't have to be a parent to care about parenting. Danielle wrote the book as a proud aunt and keen observer. Her "outsider with a front-row seat" perspective gives the humor its edge — she witnesses the triumphs and tantrums, glass in hand, no carpool duty required. 3. The book sat in a drawer for 14 years. Danielle wrote it over a decade ago but only published it last year. Her motivation: "If I go on my deathbed and I've done nothing with it, it's going to plague me." 4. Wine doesn't have to be intimidating. Every chapter uses real wine terminology — fermentation, varietal, mulled wine — and gives the definition in a fun, accessible way. It's wine education wrapped in comedy. 5. Don't let your kid ferment. Fermentation turns sugar into alcohol — something sweet into something harsh. The parallel to raising kids with manners writes itself, and Danielle's rhyming chapter on the topic is a showstopper. 6. Don't leave anything on the table. Danielle's life advice: you have one life to live, so go after things. She quit a toxic PR job without a backup plan, pivoted industries, and finally published the book she'd been sitting on — all by trusting the leap. Have you ever poured your heart into a project—only to be left unpaid in the end? Rich Wright, Artist, Designer, and Podcast Host, shares a Client Horror Story that left a lasting mark on his career. At the time, Rich had already begun building a strong reputation, even doing design work for Bacardi. Through those connections, he was introduced to a well-known musical act. The band was big, successful, and looking for someone to design their stage outfits for an upcoming event—and they wanted Rich. Thrilled by the opportunity, Rich presented his ideas, showcased his portfolio, and signed an agreement to begin the work. But something about the situation made him uneasy from the start. Trusting his instincts, he arranged to be paid in three installments. After pouring his creativity and effort into the project, Rich personally delivered the final piece of the costume directly to the band's dressing room. That's when everything went sideways. Instead of paying the remaining balance, the band refused—and even handed the situation over to their attorney. And believe it or not, the story only gets stranger from there. Tune in to hear how Rich navigated the chaos and ultimately fought to claim the payment he rightfully earned. Morgan FriedmanRich's WebsiteRich's LinkedInRich's InstagramRich's TikTokRich's X/TwitterRich's FacebookRich's YouTube Channel

He's a protégé of the legendary Les Brown — and in this conversation, he makes a compelling case that storytelling isn't a soft skill; it's the most underutilized negotiation weapon you already own. Chapter 5 has us going back in time to share Desi Arnaz' road to Hollywood;  which, if you don't know, is more than a little surprising.  And scary.  And sad.  And then more than a little hopeful as “picking oneself up by the bootstraps” is an understatement.  From growing up in Cuba, surviving the 1933 Revolution, playing in rumba bands including with Xavier Cugat, drinking Bacardi rum with Bing Crosby, introducing the conga to Miami and New York, rubbing elbows with debutantes and Al Capone, to playing THE Latin footballer in Rodgers' and Hart's ‘Too Many Girls,' that Broadway hit becoming an RKO movie, Desi Arnaz proves his precursors to ‘I Love Lucy' are also well worth chatting about.  Please chime in here and/or on Instagram @fromoutofthepastpodcast with your questions & comments, or just sharing your love of Lucille Ball and her road to ‘I Love Lucy!'  Thanks for listening ...

Information Grit Schwarzenburg Das Buch der kuriosen Orte in Berlin Bruckmann-Verlag, München € 22,99 ISBN: 978-3-7343-3180-0 Boulevard mit “Gold Else” – Foto: Rüdiger Edelmann / ttb-media TON-TEXT-BILDThe post Podcast 310 – ITB-Talk & Buchtipp: Kuriose Orte in Berlin first appeared on Deutsches Reiseradio (German Travelradio).

Building a real brand isn't about playing it safe — it's about testing, failing, learning, and trusting your instincts. In this episode of Right About Now, Ryan Alford sits down with Brett Berish, CEO of Sovereign Brands, to unpack how he built global spirits brands like Bumbu, Deacon Whiskey, Bel-Air Rosé, and McQueen Gin by doing the opposite of what the industry expected. Brett explains why he stopped trying to compete with giants like Bacardi or Jack Daniels and instead leaned into authenticity, taste-first product development, and bold packaging. He compares building businesses to comedians refining jokes — constantly reacting to audiences, tweaking the approach, and evolving until something truly lands From navigating America's rigid three-tier alcohol system to building brands in over 80 countries, Brett shares hard-earned lessons about flexibility, leadership, and believing in products before the market catches up. This episode covers: • Why no one believed in Brett's brands at launch • How taste matters more than celebrity endorsements • Why packaging is part of the brand experience • How failure shaped his leadership style • Building teams of self-starters, not followers • Why letting products “breathe” unlocked global growth • Turning personal struggle into purpose If you're building anything — a company, a product, or a personal brand — this conversation offers a masterclass in resilience, creativity, and trusting what makes you different. This isn't guesswork. Bacardi builds this report using global ambassador insight, consumer research across multiple countries, and real operator behavior. The result is a clearer picture of where beverage demand is heading and how hotel bars can respond. What stood out most to me is how timing, intentional drinking, and experience now matter as much as what's in the glass. Afternoon drinking is rising, cocktails are getting lighter and more deliberate, and guests expect bars to deliver something worth remembering — not just something strong. What we cover:

Robert's a swashbuckling figure even by liquor biz standards: son of a fighter pilot, he grew up in England, set up a chain of radio stations across Europe in his youth, ran an agency, then slipped sideways into the liquor biz (armed only with a degree in languages) and climbed the greasy pole at Bacardi for 26 years, ending up as CEO of North America, after stints running the business in Moscow and Asia, among others. In 2015, with another Bacardi refugee, Juan Rovira, RFR founded Samson & Surrey, a craft brand incubator which acquired Tequila Ocho, Mezcal Vago, Bluecoat Gin, Widow Jane whiskey, FEW whiskey and Brenne whisky and then applied RFR & Juan's expertise to grow the brands, before Samson & Surrey was itself acquired by Heaven Hill in 2022. (Full disclosure: RFR & Juan were both still running Samson & Surrey in May 2023, when they hired Mrs Duff to be their head of advocacy). We've had a quick drink together here and there but I've wanted to have a longer chat for ages, and we finally managed to plan it in - not easily, as, by his own admission, RFR sucks at being retired and is working harder than ever, helping (among other things) Filthy Foods grow. We chatted about marketing, NPDs, what's changed in the liquor biz, the fallacy of research, Dick Bradsell's branding genius, why packaging rules, and a whole lot more. Welcome back!  In this inspiring episode of So Ambitious, we sit down with Ingrid Best, founder of IBest Wines, to unpack her bold journey from corporate spirits executive to visionary wine entrepreneur. Ingrid reveals how her time in South Africa unlocked her creative superpower, why she walked away at the height of her career to launch her own brand, and how she's rewriting the rules of storytelling, brand-building, and legacy creation. From the messy middle of entrepreneurship to navigating naysayers, fundraising challenges, and staying true to her love for wine, Ingrid shares the lessons that keep her grounded, ambitious, and committed to lifting others along the way. Whether you're a creative, a founder, or someone daring to take a big leap, this conversation will fuel your courage to bet on yourself. KEY POINTS - South Africa unlocked Ingrid's creative superpower and fueled her vision for IBest Wines - Lessons from working with global giants like Diageo, Bacardi, and Moët Hennessy shaped her brand approach - How storytelling and showing the “messy middle” are essential for building authentic brands - Walking away from a top corporate role was the bold step toward her true passion - How naysayers pushed her to focus, stay quiet, and trust her vision - Focus is a discipline; mentorship, walking, and long flights became part of her process - Mentorship revealed confidence as the key barrier holding young women back - Building IBest Wines with personal capital, then raised support from trusted Black women investors - Transparency with investors and the community builds resilience during challenges - Ingrid: Legacy is about self-belief, equity for women, and creating generational wealth QUOTABLES  “I'm a 20-year overnight success. Everything I know came from working with the biggest brands in the world.” – Ingrid Best “People don't just want to see the perfect ad. They want to see the messy middle.” – Ingrid Best “I walked away from the height of my career because I finally had the faith, courage, and ambition to bet on myself.” – Ingrid Best “Legacy for me is equity, global storytelling, and proving that big acquisitions can close the wealth gap.” – Ingrid Best RESOURCES Ingrid Best  IG | @Ms_Ibest Ibest Wines  IG | @ibestwines/  Felecia Hatcher IG | @feleciahatcher Black Ambition IG | @blackambitionprize So Ambitious is produced by EPYC Media
