My favorite novel of 2017 was Liska Jacobs's Catalina and I've been anticipating her second novel ever since. The Worst Kind of Want was recently released by MCD Books and I was not disappointed.  Liska's  books can be read at a fast clip but they are the furthest thing from a  "beach read."
