Hailey Baptiste is 24 years old and the world #42. Fresh off of a month in Australia followed by making her first semi in Abu Dhabi, she joined me from her apartment in Delray Beach, just days before she is to leave for Palm Desert. We ran thru the 5 set format with big time swagger. We discussed her surprise dismissal of her coach, the quality of her tennis to start the season, and then hit all of the hot button topics of the day- the difficulty of the schedule, the Destiny Aiava retirement memo, and the return of the Williams sisters to name a few. Hailey was extremely forthcoming and painted a fascinating picture of what her life is like on tour. Step into Palm Springs history with a conversation that feels like slipping into a poolside cabana in 1970. This episode of Big Conversations, Little Bar with Patrick Evans & Randy Florence welcomes Nelda Linsk—soon to be honored as First Lady of Modernism—for stories spanning fashion, philanthropy, architecture, and the golden era of desert social life. Nelda shares the behind-the-scenes truth of Slim Aarons' legendary “Poolside Gossip” photo shoot at the Kaufmann House: no stylists, no makeup team, just friends, champagne, and a tripod—finished in about an hour. She recalls the Racquet Club days when celebrities escaped Hollywood attention, and the parties, charity events, and fashion shows that shaped the valley's culture. The conversation also explores her friendship with Barbara Sinatra, the founding of the Barbara Sinatra Children's Center, and why firsthand memories still matter. Expect laughs, name-drops, and pure Palm Springs magic!Takeaways:Nelda Linsk will be recognized as “First Lady of Modernism,” including an updated star dedication.“Poolside Gossip” was lightly staged: Slim Aarons called ahead, asked for friends, and kept it casual. The shoot had no glam squad—just a tripod and camera—yet became globally iconic. The Kaufmann House's architecture and lifestyle helped make the image aspirational worldwide.Palm Springs' Racquet Club era offered celebrities privacy, fueling a unique social scene.Nelda and her husband restored and enhanced the Kaufmann House with major design talent.Nelda's friendship with Barbara Sinatra connected to major philanthropy, including the Children's Center. The episode highlights how Palm Springs changed as retail and tourism shifted toward Palm Desert.#BigConversationsLittleBarPodcast #PatrickEvans #RandyFlorence #SkipsLittleBar #MutualBroadcastingSystem #CoachellaValleyResidents #SkipPaige #NeldaLinsk #Modernism #PalmSprings #ModernismWeek #PoolsideGossip #SlimAarons #KaufmannHouse #MidcenturyModern #PalmSpringsHistory #DesertGlamour #BarbaraSinatra #SinatraLegacy #Philanthropy

From the coveted corner booth at Skip Paige's Little Bar in Palm Desert, Big Conversations, Little Bar with Patrick Evans & Randy Florence turns to one of Palm Springs' biggest preservation wins: reopening the Plaza Theatre as a public venue. Architect, preservationist, and former city council member J.R. Roberts recounts how a shuttered landmark nearly became a gutted nightclub, then survived COVID uncertainty and post-pandemic construction inflation. He explains how a pivotal $5 million gift—and a promise that he'd “stay to the end”—reignited the effort, why contractor bids ballooned, and how the city's support helped bridge the gap. The hosts also dig into civic life, small-town politics, and why volunteering locally can change outcomes fast. Finally, Roberts shares how Oak View Group stepped in for programming and management, setting up the theatre for a steady stream of major acts, community events, and economic impact across the Coachella Valley. Along the way, expect laughs, stories, and a candid look at what it takes to save a landmark.Takeaways:The Plaza Theatre's comeback began when a proposed nightclub “gut job” raised preservation alarms.A small early fundraising push stalled during COVID—then the project rebounded dramatically afterward.A transformative $5 million commitment came with one condition: finish the mission, no matter what.Post-COVID construction costs and competitive bids drove the restoration budget far higher than expected.City support helped bridge the financing gap, with payback tied to cash plus economic/tax impacts.Oak View Group became a key partner, bringing resources, marketing reach, and operating expertise.Roberts' path from Sausalito to Palm Springs highlights how local politics can shape a city's character. The episode underscores a simple civic lesson: you can make a difference by showing up locally.#BigConversationsLittleBarPodcast #PatrickEvans #RandyFlorence #SkipsLittleBar #MutualBroadcastingSystem #CoachellaValleyResidents #SkipPaige #McCallumTheatre #SharonLawrence #JRRoberts #PlazaTheatre #PalmSprings #PalmSpringsPlazaTheatre #ArchitecturalPreservation #HistoricPreservation #ArchitecturalRestoration #OakViewGroup #AcrisureArena #HaroldMatzner #DavidLee

How do you envision the second coming of Christ? The Revelation of Scripture envisions a day when Christ Jesus will come again - as he came before. He will bring heaven to earth. He will establish the reign of our good and gracious Lord. He will heal us and the whole broken and beautiful creation. This is not a future to fear. This is a future to celebrate!Join us In-Person or Online for Worship Sundays at 9:15am and 11:15am.Find out more about upcoming events and ways to serve our community by joining our mailing list. In this quietly powerful talk, Jokai Blackwell reflects on how Zen practice invites us into a deeper intimacy with life — not by escaping discomfort, but by softening our resistance to it. He shares personal stories and teachings from Zen and early Buddhism that reveal how clinging to control or certainty only increases suffering.Instead, Jokai encourages listeners to cultivate a practice of surrender: of returning, again and again, to the grounded experience of the body, breath, and present moment. This embodied awareness becomes a gateway to wholeness — not a fixed state, but a dynamic unfolding that includes everything, even the messy and uncertain. He outlines several key teachings to support this shift toward presence:Wholeness is not perfection: It's the capacity to include and be with whatever arises.Grasping and aversion fragment our experience: They reinforce the illusion of separation. The body is a reliable refuge: Returning to bodily sensations helps us drop into direct experience.Letting go is active, not passive: It's a courageous practice of turning toward, not away.Practice is relational: Awakening unfolds in connection — with self, others, and life itself.Jokai's words are both spacious and grounded, inviting listeners into a felt sense of trust — not in outcomes, but in the wisdom of showing up fully to the life that's already here.______________Jokai moved to Southern California from the UK in 2000 to study residentially at Yokoji Zen Mountain Center. During his formal training, Jokai completed the full Zen koan curriculum. In 2014, he received Dharma Transmission (authorization to teach) in the White Plum lineage of Zen Buddhism from Charles Tenshin Fletcher Roshi, and Inka (final approval) in 2022.Jokai emphasizes the direct experience of awakening using contemporary language and time-honored methods. He is the Guiding Teacher for Long Beach Meditation, and serves as a member of Insight Community of the Desert's Guiding Council. After completing 20 years of residency at Yokoji Zen Mountain Center, he now lives in Palm Desert with his family. ______________ To support our efforts to share these talks with LGBTQIA audiences worldwide, please visit https://gaybuddhist.org/There you can: Donate Learn how to participate live Find our schedule of upcoming speakers Join our mailing list or discussion forum Enjoy many hundreds of these recorded talks dating back to 1996 CREDITSAudio Engineer: George HubbardProducer: Tom BrueinMusic/Logo/Artwork: Derek Lassiter

Some Sadducees have a question for Jesus about the resurrection. However, their ulterior motive is to trap Jesus with his answer. Jesus responds by upending an understanding of the resurrection itself. For as we can see throughout the bible to our current day and in the future promise, when we see God everything changes.Join us In-Person or Online for Worship Sundays at 9:15am and 11:15am.Find out more about upcoming events and ways to serve our community by joining our mailing list. “Saint” in Scripture is not used to single out extraordinary individuals or exclusively for the faithful departed. Saint describes each and every follower of Jesus Christ. And so “sainthood” is not something we achieve or something we only await. Sainthood is our present reality and our future hope. Legendary maître d' Brian Ellis pulls back the velvet rope on five decades at Melvyn's and the Ingleside Inn, where stars, moguls, and locals mixed like martinis as he opens up on this episode of Big Conversations, Little Bar with Patrick Evans and Randy Florence from the corner booth at Skip Paige's Little Bar in Palm Desert.. From overbooked New Year's Eves to Sinatra's rehearsal dinner, Ellis recounts how front-of-house finesse, unflappable charm, and a well-timed “wave” could turn chaos into magic. He remembers iconic entertainers like Nino Fontana, explains why the Sunday Jam became a civic ritual, and shares why Mel Haber's old-school rules kept the lights glowing and the legends returning. Ellis also reveals the craft behind saying yes to special requests, the rare moments that warranted an 86, and the human kindness that happened off the record. Finally, he updates us on life at Hotel Paseo and his forthcoming memoir packed with signatures, photos, and jaw-dropping tales. It's a sparkling masterclass in hospitality, Palm Springs history, and the art of making every guest feel like a headliner.Takeaways:Five decades at Melvyn's made Ellis the ultimate Palm Springs gatekeeper.Sinatra's rehearsal dinner at Melvyn's put the venue on the map.Sunday Jam crowds became a valley ritual requiring deft crowd management.Mel Haber's “say yes” ethos—and selective 86ing—shaped service culture.Nino Fontana's showmanship (and breaks!) inspired unforgettable lounge lore.Quiet philanthropy surfaced in stories of kindness from famous patrons.Classic tableside dishes and upselling sustained quality and profitability.Ellis now brings that front-of-house magic to Hotel Paseo—and to his memoir.#BigConversationsLittleBarPodcast #PatrickEvans #RandyFlorence #SkipsLittleBar #MutualBroadcastingSystem #CoachellaValleyResidents #SkipPaige #BrianEllis #MelvynsPalmSprings #InglesideInn #PalmSprings #MelHaber #FrankSinatra #NinoFontana #SundayJam #HotelPaseo #McCallumTheatre #CelebrityStories #RestaurantLife #MaitreD
