For our fifth installment of our book club series, the #BookCast team read Transcendent Kingdom by Yaa Gyasi.  Join us for a discussion led by Garth Casbourn with co-hosts Meghan Voll, Riya Sidhu, and Scott Walters.  We dive into the complex narrative of Gifty, a young scientist getting her PhD at Stanford, attempting to discover secrets behind addictive behavior. This story is one of grief, hope, childhood trauma, conflicts between faith and science, and racism and immigration in North America. We'll cover many of the books themes and writing devices, its approach at describing science and graduate student life, and talk about the challenges faced by the protagonist both in the lab and her difficult past. ADVISORY: This book has themes of addiction and overdose that are central to the story. In the second part of our conversation, we dive into these topics. Some listeners may wish to either avoid or prepare for this portion of our episode. Airing October 31th at 11 AM on Radio Western. Writer and broadcaster Gyles Brandreth has chosen EF Benson's entertaining tale of competitive snobbery in the 1920s, Mapp and Lucia. In a contrasting choice, neuroscientist Hannah Critchlow advocates for Transcendent Kingdom by Yaa Gyasi, a story of a Ghanaian family transplanted to Alabama which takes in neuroscience and opiate addiction. Harriett has gone for a real crowd-pleaser in E. Nesbit's The Railway Children and all three enjoy a bit of nostalgia for the times when children could run free having adventures around the railway. Produced for BBC Audio Bristol by Sally Heaven.

Some of her fondest childhood memories involve long afternoons at the library and then reading late into the night. More than ten years ago, she began journaling about the books she read and turned that passion into writing about books. Her first forays were as a guest reviewer on a friend's blog, but she soon realized she wanted to be reviewing and talking about books on a blog of her own. From there, Novel Visits was born. That was in 2016 and, though the learning curve was steep, she loves being a part of the book community. Novel Visits focuses on new novel reviews (print and audio), previews of upcoming releases, and musings on all things bookish.

It's the last book club for 2020, friends! This month, we read Transcendent Kingdom by Yaa Gyasi - a novel that centres around Gifty, a neuroscientist at Stanford who studies addiction and depression neural circuits through experimenting with mice. This, we come to learn, is no coincidence. Transcendent Kingdom deals with grief, mental illness, and religion, and also takes us back through Gifty's life: From her brother's opioid addiction to a disappearing father to being sent to Ghana to live with her Aunt while her mother battles depression at home. Transcendent Kingdom was a NYT bestseller and is Yaa Jessie's second published work. Mich sat down for an interview with Yaa about her novel, which we will play in the second half of this episode. You can add a blender ball to help create the frothy foam you are trying to achieve with the egg white.Add ice, remove blender ball (if using), and shake again 3-5 seconds, until the shaker starts to get cold. Do not over shake, as the foam will break and fall flat.Strain into your glass of choice. Immediately before drinking, add the lemon juice to the drink for the “ghostly apparition” to appear. For the honey simple syrup: heat ½ cup honey, ½ cup sugar, and 1 cup water and bring to a simmer. Let cook until desired thickness. Note: it will appear thin and runny in the pan, but when cooled, it will have a thicker syrup consistency.

Encuentros Latinx posts monthly, short reflections for spiritual contemplation, so go check them out if devotional reading is part of your spiritual practice.   I've got a book recommendation for you today: Transcendent Kingdom by Yaa Gyasi. It's about a woman named Gifty who's the daughter of Ghanain immigrants and is currently a neuroscience PhD candidate. But she comes from a strong Pentecostal background, a mother struggling with mental health issues, and a family tragedy that, over time, upended Gifty's absolute faith in God. Gifty is forced to confront all of this when her mother enters into her worst spell with her mental health issues in many, many years. This is a phenomenal novel and Gifty's story reminds me so much of the faith journeys that many of my guests have shared on this podcast.   Speaking of guests, today you'll hear my conversation with RJ Robles, which spans from an incident with biting ants in Puerto Rico to an expansion and weaving together of multiple spiritualities. It's quite a ride challenging every barrier of faith and gender, so let's get right into this encuentro.   Encuentros Latinx reflection piece by La Muna: https://www.ucc.org/5-loaves-of-bread-and-2-fish/   RJ's social media Instagram: @boiricanjoy  Facebook: RJ Robles

How can we turn our anxiety about the upcoming election into productive action? In this episode we talk to Francoise Stovall about what it would mean to have a true democracy and why there are reasons to be hopeful. She offers ways for busy moms to help invite more people into the process and inspires us to take action beyond voting. Feminist CrushesAs people suggest that Supreme Court nominee, Amy Coney Barrett, is a feminist, this quote from Bell Hooks' book, Feminism is for Everybody: “Lifestyle feminism ushered in the notion that there could be as many versions of feminism as there were women. Suddenly the politics was being slowly removed from feminism. And the assumption prevailed that no matter what a woman's politics, be she conservative or liberal, she too could fit feminism into her existing lifestyle. Obviously this way of thinking has made feminism more acceptable because its underlying assumption is that women can be feminists without fundamentally challenging and changing themselves or the culture.” https://rep.club/collections/books/products/transcendent-kingdom (Transcendent Kingdom by Yaa Gyasi) https://thejunecup.com/collections/frontpage/products/the-june-cup-regular?gclid=CjwKCAjw8MD7BRArEiwAGZsrBWfqxRh7PNsZoTVfow3lxSw9h3pwjH7fh61N6TeKO749XPsbL4YSLBoCltcQAvD_BwE (June Menstrual Cup) Mentions:https://votolatino.org/ (Voto Latino) https://www.indiebound.org/book/9781580050753 (Cunt) by Inga Muscio https://swingleft.org/ (Swing Left) https://indivisible.org/ (Indivisible) https://front.moveon.org/ (Move On) https://colorofchange.org/ (Color of Change) https://www.citizen.org/ (Public Citizen) https://www.commoncause.org/ (Common Cause) https://workingfamilies.org/ (Working Families Party) https://iowansfordcstatehood.com/ (Iowans for DC Statehood) https://rep.club/products/hood-feminism?_pos=1and_sid=ef5072fc4and_ss=r (Hood Feminism) by MIkki Kendall About Francoise StovallFrancoise has dedicated her career to working for inclusive and accountable democracy, both at home and around the world.
