In this special solo episode, adapted from a recent live training, Paul F. Austin explores one of the most important and often overlooked realities of microdosing: different substances create different outcomes. Find full show notes and links here: https://thethirdwave.co/podcast/episode-359/?ref=278 Drawing on more than a decade of experience in psychedelic education and coaching, Paul compares psilocybin, LSD, huachuma (San Pedro), ketamine, and iboga through the lens of client goals, nervous system regulation, emotional processing, cognitive performance, and contraindications. Paul explains why generic microdosing protocols often fall short, how practitioners can better match substances to individual needs, and why context, preparation, and integration matter far more than any single medicine. He also shares why huachuma has become the foundation of the Psychedelic Coaching Institute's microdosing methodology and offers guidance for practitioners looking to support clients with greater precision and care. Highlights: Why generic microdosing protocols can fall short How psilocybin supports emotional processing and inner work LSD's role in focus, creativity, and physiological performance Why huachuma may be especially useful for nervous system regulation Ketamine's role in SSRI tapering and clinical support Iboga's potential for neurodegenerative conditions and brain injury How to match substances to a client's goals and baseline state Why contraindications and clinical-grade intake matter How microdosing can support post-journey integration Why "more medicine" is not always the answer Episode Links: Paul on Instagram The Psychedelic Podcast The Psychedelic Coaching Institute Episode Sponsors: The Practitioner Certification Program by Third Wave's Psychedelic Coaching Institute. In mid-April, President Trump issued an executive order to set aside funding and loosen the bureaucratic process at the FDA to fast-track psychedelic therapy research. One obscure psychedelic got a particularly bright spotlight: ibogaine. Originating from the root bark of the iboga plant of central Africa, the psychedelic has shown promise for curbing opioid addiction and treating PTSD. But it also can be risky to take, and hasn't made it to the medical mainstream like psilocybin or ketamine. So what's the story with this drug? Joining Host Flora Lichtman to talk about its history is neurologist and pharmacologist Deborah Mash, who secured the first FDA approval for clinical trials involving ibogaine in the 1990s. And to tell us how it fits in with the growing interest in medical psychedelics is Jane Hu, journalist for The Microdose newsletter. (Disclosure: Deborah Mash is founder and CEO of a company that's developing a therapeutic drug based on ibogaine.) Guests: Jane C. Hu is a journalist for the psychedelic science newsletter The Microdose, based in Seattle, WA. Microdosing GLP-1 agonists can create powerful shifts in your body—when they're used the right way. The problem? Most people (and even many doctors) are using them as a quick-fix weight loss tool. And when that's the approach, of course you see burnout, terrible side effects, and rebound weight gain. But that doesn't mean these compounds are the problem. It means the strategy is. When used in a microdosing approach, GLP-1 agonists can support your body on a much deeper level—helping improve insulin sensitivity, reduce inflammation, and calm an overworked nervous system. Especially if your body has been stuck in chronic stress or survival mode, this can be the missing piece that allows your system to finally feel safe enough to function differently. This isn't about forcing weight loss. It's about creating the internal environment where your body can release it. You don't have to stay on these forever. You don't have to suffer through harsh side effects. But you do need a more intentional, supportive approach. In this episode, I'll show you what that actually looks like. When you're ready to release the extra weight for good—and finally support your nervous system, metabolism, and relationship with food—it's time to have a conversation. Before the whisper, it looked like a life of meaning—until a subconscious message exposed everything underneath.Ben Katt shares the moment that forced him to confront a truth most people avoid: you can build a life that looks meaningful on the outside—and still feel completely disconnected on the inside. After years as a pastor serving others, Ben hit a breaking point that exposed how much of his identity was built on achievement, expectation, and performance. What followed was a journey into the unknown—through burnout, self-inquiry, and ultimately a radical redefinition of who he was. This episode explores the uncomfortable but necessary path of shedding old identities, sitting in uncertainty, and learning how to reconnect with something deeper.Show Partners:Get your MENTAL FITNESS BLUEPRINT here! Do you find yourself avoiding negative emotions at all costs, distracting yourself with food, Netflix, or your phone? What if you could build the capacity to feel any emotion, no matter how uncomfortable, and still keep moving forward? In this episode, I'm diving into the concept of microdosing negative emotions and why this practice is the key to becoming unstoppable.Instead of pushing away the discomfort, we need to practice building safety around it, which is exactly what microdosing does. I'm walking you through how the microdosing approach helps you tolerate your emotions in manageable doses, so you can stop avoiding them and actually feel them as they pass.Get full show notes, transcript, and more information here: schoolofnewfeministthought.com/468Follow along on Instagram: instagram.com/karaloewentheil/Mentioned in this episode:You're Invited: Tea at the Ritz Join me on Saturday, March 28, 2026 from 3:30-5:30pm for Tea at the Ritz in Paris. Three years ago I interviewed my friend and occasional ACL contributor Gabe Bogart for Episode 29, our anniversary episode. We had such a good time we talked about doing a podcast called SLEPT ON IT, and so I sat on this episode for years, waiting for us to get off our asses and make it happen. No one ever asked why episode 30 was missing, so it feels right for an episode with this title to turn up years later. We discuss adventurous listening, the dangers of nostalgia, the hip hop renaissance of the 2020s, and much more. Where are you listening from? The best cannabis stories rarely start perfect. Wayne's first brownie was straight ground flower in batter, woody and weak, made in a tiny farm town with zero guidance. Today, his routine is dialed: jar-decarbed flower for richer terpenes, tiny eight-gram cookies for precise microdosing, and a simple rule that keeps him sharp, minimum effective dose, maximum benefit. We go deep on how edibles can replace alcohol without sacrificing fun or focus, dismantle the lazy stoner myth with real habits and talk community, access, and why walking into a dispensary is less urgent when your kitchen and garden already deliver what you need.If you're chasing smoother pain relief, clearer focus, or a social swap for booze, this conversation gives you tools, not hype.
