We’re excited to introduce you to a show we know you’ll love: Talk Easy. Hosted by Sam Fragoso, Talk Easy is a weekly series of intimate conversations with artists, activists, and politicians—where people sound like people. Writer Jia Tolentino (The New Yorker) became a literary sensation in 2019 upon the release of her best-selling essay collection, Trick Mirror: Reflections on Self-Delusion. She joins us this week to ring in 2025. We start by discussing the erosion of privacy online, the potentially forthcoming TikTok ban, and how she circumvented self-surveillance technology in her Hidden Pregnancy Experiment for The New Yorker. Then, we unpack how data is monetized online, as depicted in an unsettling scene from Succession, the harmful effects of screen time on children, and her writerly upbringing in Houston. On the back-half, Jia recounts a formative summer in Venice, her subsequent decade working at The Hairpin and Jezebel, the trad wife phenomenon, how she swings between pessimism and optimism, and why writing still retains the power to liberate. “I didn't ask my dad many questions, and now I'll never know. And I could call my mom up right now, but I'm not going to do that because - ‘the culture' - we don't really ask each other personal questions.” Kathy MacLeod is an illustrator and cartoonist - the author of CONTINENTAL DRIFTER, her debut graphic novel - a memoir about a youth split between growing up in Bangkok, and her first summer camp experience in Maine. CONTINENTAL DRIFTER is a coming of age story about a girl caught between two worlds - her home of Thailand, where her mom is from, and her discovery - and reconciliation with reality of - the  exotic, idyllic America of her father. Kathy's work was an accidental discovery (and a happy surprise) - a classic childhood story of seeking belonging, but not being sure where we can find it. While it's a fun graphic novel geared for kids, at times it can be a heavy drama of understanding for all of us. It's really tender, and it has a lot of heart. Kathy's work has appeared in The Believer, Catapult, The Hairpin, and Lucky Peach. After spending most of her life in Bangkok, Thailand (with a four-year interlude at Wesleyan University), Kathy is currently living in Berlin, Germany. While our chat didn't cover much about her work, we covered a lot about the stories we each carry with us about the relationships we have with our families.  LEARN MORE instagram.com/kathy_macleod BOOK: Continental Drifter - goodreads.com/book/show/111672623-continental-drifter MENTIONS BOOK: Blankets (Craig Thompson): goodreads.com/book/show/25179.Blankets BOOK: Ducks (Kate Beaton): goodreads.com/en/book/show/59069071-ducks SHOW: Felicity: imdb.com/title/tt0134247/ BOOKS: Ramona Quimby (Beverly Cleary): goodreads.com/series/40341-ramona-quimby PERSON: Chanel Miller - wikipedia.org/wiki/Chanel_Miller Learn more about your ad choices. Going beyond a trauma-informed approach to help students heal

We all know that school is supposed to be a place to focus on learning. But for many students, learning can be disrupted by the realities of their lives, including and especially trauma. Map Academy was designed to serve students who are dealing with challenging lived experiences—like substance misuse, housing insecurity, and mental health struggles—that can lead to trauma. Beyond just recognizing how these experiences have caused their students to become disengaged, Map helps them better understand the impacts of trauma and gives them tools to help them heal from it. In this episode, hear from Map leadership and staff about their “healing-centered” approach to learning, teaching, and youth development—how they connect students to holistic support and resources, help them build meaningful connections, and give them the time and space they need to heal (and re-engage with learning) at their own pace. --- Explore more stories at educationdisruption.org Education Disruption is a podcast by Map Academy—a free, charter public high school open to all Massachusetts students up to age 24 This podcast is a Hairpin production: hairpin.org

Increasingly, we're hearing from teachers that student morale and engagement are concerningly low while behavioral issues are on the rise. But are the typical approaches to classroom management actually making student engagement and behavior worse? What happens when a teacher is expected to confront a student about their behavior in front of their peers, give them a failing grade due to absences, or confiscate their phone? These sorts of interventions can reinforce toxic power struggles between students and staff, ultimately creating more barriers to learning. But there is an alternative approach—instead of policing and punishing student behaviors, the team at Map Academy intentionally doesn't escalate situations that can lead to disconnected, dysregulated, or disempowered students. In this episode, hear from Map teachers and leadership about how they manage student disengagement and (mis)behavior while promoting a non-hierarchical power dynamic—all with a nuanced understanding of how defiant and apathetic classroom behaviors often stem from existing personal struggles. In traditional high schools, students are expected to adhere to strict schedules, standards, and benchmarks, all of which can be unrealistic for learners whose educations have been disrupted by their life circumstances. And when students fail to conform to expectations, it can be easy to fall off track, with many being driven to drop out altogether. That's why students at Map Academy always have a say in how they will progress through their high school journeys. In this episode, recent graduate Anthony shares how he knew Map was different from the systems that had failed him before, and staff discuss radical student autonomy—what it looks like in practice and how it helps prepare learners for the independence and responsibility that comes with life after high school. --- Explore more stories at educationdisruption.org Education Disruption is a podcast by Map Academy—a free, charter public high school open to all Massachusetts students up to age 24 This podcast is a Hairpin production: hairpin.org

Amanda is also a screenwriter and no, nothing you may have seen.   BOOK DESCRIPTION: In her book, British comedy writer Amanda Rosenberg breaks down myths and misconceptions about what it means to live, laugh, love with bipolar II in a darkly funny, but familiar way. That's Mental dives head-first into the overlooked and offbeat issues of mental illness, it shines a harsh, fitting room light on thoughts and ideas that are often avoided, because they're uncomfortable or just downright embarrassing.  These pages move through the everyday realities of mental illness, covering everything from, how reaching out for help is a fucking nightmare, to dealing with people who suggest “cures” for your depression, to making up excuses to miss work just so you can take a mental health day. That's Mental is an uproarious and brutally honest collection of confessions from someone who's been there, done that, and still has no idea what she's doing.

My guest on this episode of the podcast is Kevin LaTorre, a poet and writer living with his family in North Carolina. His work has appeared in The Blotter, Echo Literary Magazine, Walter Magazine, Ad Fontes, and the Front Porch Republic. He writes about poetry, Christianity, and literature at A Stylist Submits.I asked Kevin to pick one text, idea, person, encounter that he thought captured something about where things are today, and his choice was What to Do with Climate Emotions, by Jia Tolentino, in the New Yorker.Kevin also suggested we have a number of other essays present in the background of our conversation about climate change, catastrophism, pro- and anti-natalism, Tolentino, environmentalism, Christianity, etc. His notes on the background reading:* "Is Abortion Sacred?" by Tolentino in TNY: This 2022 piece discusses the birth of children with a similar ecological pessimism as "Climate Emotions" (arguably to a stronger extent, and again in religious/Christian terms)* "Ha ha! Ha ha!" by Lauren Oyler in The London Review of Books: the premier takedown of Tolentino in polite literary circles - the piece is itself questionable and deeply rude but charges Tolentino as one of the "hysterical critics" who makes everything about her and her own "shoddy mode of [narcissistic] thinking" (I don't know if I fully agree, but the self-centeredness charge is interesting for discussing "Climate Emotions" and how Tolentino seemingly echoes her sources)* Your [i.e. my] piece on The New Yorker: the idea that The New Yorker must "artfully neutralize the cognitive dissonance of liberals" can help us describe Tolentino's development as the aspirational female writer of the 2010s (from Hairpin and Jezebel to TNY staff writer in 2016, fortuitous for her career but possibly at the cost of her teeth and devilish humor?)* "Is It OK to Have a Child?" by Meehan Crist in The London Review of Books: defines pretty well the intellectuals' ecological anti-natalism/pessimism towards birth that Tolentino very much flirts with* Ecological anti-natalism as a philosophy present in environmental activism: there's a long history of this pretty anti-human belief system, and its current iteration that very much simulates the Christian concept of original sin (again, something Tolentino seems to accord with given her evangelical background)Eminent Americans is a reader-supported publication. Domain names have value, even when the websites that were once hosted there are shut down or abandoned. Prospectors will often swoop in and snatch up an unused domain, then erect a new website filled with clickbait articles. If the domain name used to rank highly in search results, the new clickbait articles will also rank highly, guaranteeing the prospector a steady stream of visitors searching the web for common phrases. These zombie sites are all over the web; you've probably landed on them many times yourself. But this shady market is poised to grow exponentially thanks to the proliferation of generative AI tools. Text generators like ChatGPT make it easier for prospectors to crank out clickbait articles at greater speed, feeding an already raging river of pablum. This week, Kate Knibbs tells us about her WIRED story on one of these entrepreneurs in the world of AI-generated clickbait hosted on squatted domains.Show Notes:Read Kate's story about Nebojša Vujinović Vujo and his clickbait empire. The Adventures of Philip Marlowe was a radio series featuring Raymond Chandler's private eye, Philip Marlowe. Robert C. Reinehr and Jon D. Swartz, in their book, The A to Z of Old Time Radio, noted that the program differed from most others in its genre: "It was a more hard-boiled program than many of the other private detective shows of the time, containing few quips or quaint characters." In 1948, the series moved to CBS, where it was called The Adventure of Philip Marlowe, with Gerald Mohr playing Marlowe. This series also began with an adaptation of "Red Wind", using a script different from the NBC adaptation. By 1949, it had the largest audience in radio. The CBS version ran for 114 episodes. That series ran 26 September 1948 – 29 September 1950.. Try the new "Tales of Escape & Suspense"- links below! Esther Ouwehand emerged as top dog in her battle with the party's management board, but will it knock the PvdD off their electoral perch? We discuss that, as well as the squabbles over D66's candidate list and the quickfire dismissal of Pieter Omtzigt's spokesman. In other news, public transport fares are going up, spending power is going down and the Dutch men's teams have something to celebrate. And a missing Van Gogh is recovered in an Ikea bag, which makes a nice change from pictures of bicycles on canal bridges.

In this episode, we hear from Zay. Facing personal struggles with depression and substance use, he had trouble staying on track at his previous schools — he was getting suspended and expelled and says he was treated as a “delinquent.” At schools that were unable to help him heal and thrive, he was losing sight of his goals. But once he found his way to Map, Zay was set up with wraparound supports and pushed outside of his comfort zone, allowing him to succeed both academically and in life. “Map Academy actually ended up making graduation from high school possible, which I never thought that it would be,” he says. Now, post-graduation, Zay moved to New York to pursue his music career and has a scholarship to fall back on if his plans change. --- Education Disruption is a podcast by Map Academy — a free, public charter high school open to all Massachusetts students. There was a lot going on at home and school, and she would be involved in drama, get into fights, and fall behind on her schoolwork. But at Map, students like Jennie are given the support and tools they need to navigate their emotions, practice self-control, own their behavior, and feel empowered to make better choices. “Having to leave school and not be able to learn because of fighting made me realize that I can woman up and not fight in school,” she says. He directed the feature Be Somebody for Paramount Pictures and Studio 71, the first season of the Hulu drama series South Beach and the MarVista Entertainment thriller Negative, starring Katia Winter (Blood and Treasure) and Simon Quarterman (Westworld). His latest film is the crime thriller Infamous starring Bella Thorne and Jake Manley. Another was Resignation, a short film about a world in which Superman has taken off his cape and turned his back on humanity. It was featured on Kotaku.com, GeekTryrant.com and ScreenRant.com, calling it a film that's "handled smartly with a strong script, nuanced performances, and a clever twist." Joshua and the film's creators were featured on a panel at the 2014 San Diego Comic-Con.Prior to launching his career as a director, Joshua was an executive for CSI: creator Anthony E. Zuiker. Calling him the "best kept secret in Hollywood," Zuiker turned to Joshua to oversee several of his high-profile digital projects, including producing Cybergeddon the online global motion picture event for Yahoo! In this edition of Education Disruption, we're talking to students of Map Academy just before they become official high school graduates. As part of their graduation requirements, these students were tasked with reflecting on the journeys that led them to this point. Jayden faced several challenges at his previous high school — inadequate staff support, anxiety, depression, and bullying made him believe he would have no choice but to drop out. Throughout it all, though, Jayden found comfort in art. “I started drawing for fun, then in the long run it helped me with my mental health,” he says. Once Jayden found his way to Map, the staff encouraged his creativity, which made him feel comfortable expressing his full self at school. With the respect, individualized attention, and motivation he needed, Jayden was able to re-engage with school and get his diploma from Map. --- Education Disruption is a podcast by Map Academy — a free, public charter high school open to all Massachusetts students. In this new edition of Education Disruption, we're featuring stories of success and challenge as told by Map students in their own words — a final capstone project before their graduation. Getting started at Map during the 2019 - 2020 school year, right as the pandemic took hold, was tough for Doug. He struggled to adjust to the new setting, fell behind, and feared he wouldn't be able to graduate on schedule. He says he felt anxiety and shame about this setback, so he stopped coming to school altogether. He found work outside of school, but quickly realized that he would need a high school diploma if he wanted to start his career — so he found his way back to Map and reconnected with his friends and goals. He says that the encouragement he got from Map staff along the way was key to him getting his diploma. “Everybody's a little bit nervous. Everybody thinks they're behind, but in reality, nobody's paying attention to what anybody else is doing,” Doug says. “You just got to pay attention to what you're doing. Keep yourself on track.” --- Education Disruption is a podcast by Map Academy — a free, public charter high school open to all Massachusetts students. In this episode, we hear from Javon, a recent Map graduate. At his previous schools, Javon was distracted, wasn't getting the right support from his teachers, and got caught up in friendships that weren't serving him. At first, he was hesitant to open up to the staff at Map, but after they earned Javon's trust, he reconnected with his education and goals. Now, he's committed to applying what he has learned to motivate current and future Map students. “I care about all the kids here at Map. I see potential in all of them,” Javon says. “I know that they can do whatever they want to do, but they got to use the assets that they have in this building.” --- Education Disruption is a podcast by Map Academy — a free, public charter high school open to all Massachusetts students. On this episode of Salt Lake Dirt I welcome back author Liska Jacobs. Liska has been one of my favorite writers from the past few years. Her novel The Pink Hotel will be released July 19th on MCD. The book is incredible and I encourage everyone to pick up a copy. Liska will be in the USA promoting the book and you'll be able to find some of those events if you scroll to the bottom of the page. Thanks for listening! Kyler --- About The Pink Hotel: "Newlyweds Keith and Kit Collins can hardly believe their luck when the general manager of the iconic, opulent Pink Hotel invites them to come for a luxurious stay as a bid to hire Keith. Kit loves their small-town life, but Keith has always wanted more, and the glittering, lily-scented lobby makes him feel right at home. Soon after their arrival, wildfires sweep through the surrounding mountains and Los Angeles becomes a pressure cooker, with riots breaking out across the city amid rolling blackouts. The Pink Hotel closes its doors to "outsiders," and Keith and Kit find themselves confined with an anxious, disgruntled staff and a growing roster of eccentric, ultra-wealthy, dangerously idle guests who flock to the hotel for sanctuary, company, and entertainment. The Pink Hotel exposes a tenuous class system within its walls, full of insurmountable expectations and unspoken resentments, which deteriorate as the city burns. In her barbed, provocative new novel, Liska Jacobs explores the corrosive nature of greed and interrogates the notion of true love, while hurtling readers toward certain disaster." The Adventures of Philip Marlowe was a radio series featuring Raymond Chandler's private eye, Philip Marlowe. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
