This week, we're diving into a debut thriller that's frothy, funny, and unhinged in the best way. Liann Zhang joins me for a laugh-out-loud conversation about her new novel, Julie Chan Is Dead—a genre-blending con-artist thriller about identical twin sisters whose lives split in dramatically different directions… until one of them winds up dead. When the authorities mistake Julie for her famous sister, she makes a bold choice: to step into Chloe's perfectly curated shoes and steal her life. What follows is a fast-paced, satirical exploration of influencer culture, viral content, and the dark side of social media fame.In the spirit of the influencer theme, we share the most bizarre influencer swag we've ever received before digging into how a pandemic-fueled fascination with influencer culture allowed Liann to take a break from her dreams of writing about the Ming Dynasty. We also talk about what it's like to write a morally murky protagonist, the grotesque cult subplot that takes things to the next level, and why this book just might be Bunny meets Yellowface with a touch of The Bling Ring.In this fun conversation, Liann and I discuss:How Liann pivoted from writing about the Ming Dynasty to a con-artist thrillerWhy influencer culture during the pandemic was the perfect satirical settingCreating the character of Julie: an intriguing anti-heroine who fully leans into her morally gray side. The ongoing need for critical consumption of influencer content
Emily Henry is a New York Times & Sunday Times Bestselling author who has written five consecutive number one Bestsellers. She has been dubbed the ‘Queen of the Beach Read' and has helped redefine the romance genre. Jenna Bush Hager sits down with Emily to discuss how she began writing fan fiction in middle school, and the teachers that encouraged her along the way. She opens up about how she first discovered the romance genre, and how she has embraced writing and reading books that bring her joy!
Back to normal! No guests this week, just a bunch of books to talk about, including some big names. Is Sam's mic kind of wonky early? Yes. Just get by that. It doesn't last long. And you really want to hear about: - "Great Big Beautiful Life," by Emily Henry, which is just enough different from her previous beach reads to make a great beach read. It's a ridiculous biography contest set in Georgia. - "The Name of this Band is R.E.M.," by Peter Ames Carlin, which Sam found a little boring, but it's hard to tell if that's just because R.E.M. is a boring band. - "Raising Hare," by Chloe Dalton, which really is about raising a bunny, but not a bunny, a hare, which is a different mysterious kind of animal. Better than that sounds, though. - "Everything is Tuberculosis," by John Green, which has a terrible name, but is very readable because John Green can write like crazy. This leads to talk about Reddit forums detailing woo-woo mom forum posting, for reasons, and discussion of the term "vlogger." - "Whyte Python World Tour," by Travis Kennedy, an absolutely absurd and often funny tale of a hair-metal band secretly working for the CIA to bring down the Wall in the late 1980s. Sam doesn't know what to make of it. - "Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries," by Heather Fawcett, which is delightful, about an academic cataloging faeries in Norway. It's cozy and quite charming. Also, no, we didn't get this posted in time for Bookstore Day or the Literary Festival, but just try to look past that. It's already happened and you missed it. But there will be other stuff that's awesome in the future, we promise.

From OnlyFans journeys to literary ice dancers and secret identities, this list blends literary flair with binge-worthy storytelling.

Hey Hey! This is my (Nina's) first solo episode! From now on this will (probably) be a single-host podcast. But I'll make sure it's still enjoyable for you guys. Let me know if you have any suggestions for me in regards to the format, topics, etc. I'm all ears! In this episode, I'll first address the elephant in the room. Secondly, I'll mention two of this year's beach reads that I enjoyed, and thirdly, a new book series discovery that's got me hooked! The book series consists of four main books: Corrupt, Hideaway, Kill Switch, and Nightfall. And two novels. If you're into them and if you think they'd be good options for a deep dive on this podcast let me know. :) Love you,Nina Instagram: @morethanfictionpodTik Tok: @morethanfiction

Roads Taken with Leslie Jennings Rowley will be returning for an all new season this summer— but don't expect frothy beach-read material. We're getting into the heavy stuff of the current moment—the opioid epidemic, higher education, the climate crisis and scariest of all, online dating. As in all our previous seasons, we will talk with new guests—all a quarter-century-plus after college—about who they were as they graduated, who they thought they'd become, and how they've traveled down various roads to get where they are today. But this time, interspersed with those new voices, we will be sitting down anew with some previous guests to get an update on the paths they've trod since our last conversation. It might not all be fun and games but, in talking to these special humans, we will certainly be finding the humanity in it all.//You might want to re-listen to a few previous episodes.Particularly handy might be the episodes withBrandon del Pozo (The Philosopher Officer),Kira Lawrence (Better Environments), andAdam Medros (Disruptive Mindset). Given the hot weather -- and the depressing politics -- you may be looking for an easy "beach read" for the beach, or maybe just the break room or bedroom. Laurie Dreyer, manager of Troy Public Library's Lansingburgh branch, has five suggestions, in various settings. The first four she heard of from the website blackgirlnerds.com: "Summer on the Bluffs" (Sunny Hostin, 2021, on Martha's Vineyard); "Drunk on Love" (Jasmine Guillory, 2022, in a Napa Valley winery); "Honey and Spice" (Bolu Babalola, 2022 in a radio program!); and "The Accidental Pinup" (Danielle Jackson, 2022, in a photography studio). The fifth one is a thriller: "When No One Is Watching" (Alyssa Cole, 2020, in a Brooklyn neighborhood). For more details, stop by the Lansingburg branch at 27 114th St., or visit www.thetroylibrary.org. To find other libraries in New York State, see https://www.nysl.nysed.gov/libdev/libs/#Find. Produced by Brea Barthel for Hudson Mohawk Magazine.

There are race books, and there are beach reads, and never the twain shall meet. You know that old truism, right? Well, this is Code Switch (the show about race and identity and romance and drama from NPR), and we weren't willing to accept that dichotomy. So on this episode, we're bringing you a bouquet of our favorite summer thrillers, love stories, memoirs and more — all of which have something to say about race.

The traditional long summer break from school in the U.S. can mean fun in the sun—and summer learning loss (SLL). While SLL is a documented phenomenon, not all K-12 students lose the same skills and knowledge over the summer. In fact, some make gains over the summer holiday. One of the most important things students can do to improve is read. And reading can be a powerful driver of learning for adults as well as K-12 students. In this episode of the Leading Learning Podcast, co-hosts Jeff Cobb and Celisa Steele offer a preview of their summer reading list, each sharing one book of nonfiction, one of fiction, and a wildcard—with a few bonus books thrown in for good measure. Show notes and a downloadable transcript are available at https://www.leadinglearning.com/episode362.
Go read a book! It's like a summer anthem for parents but the dividends are worth the nagging. Research continues to prove that summer reading helps kids avoid the brain drain that often occurs during summer break. Summer reading improves reading skills. Reading fluency is key to academic success in all subjects. Kids + summer reading = a winning combo. That said, it's sometimes a tough sell with kids. That's why it's critical to find something that grabs a kid's interest and reflects their individuality. Tina Ferguson is the owner of Face in a Book bookstore and my co-host on our annual "Summer Beach Reads" show. In part 2, Tina suggests titles for kids that are rich in inclusivity and imagination. Have a reluctant reader in your home? Tins suggest parents be open to graphic novels, whose popularity has exploded. "There are things you can do with illustrations along with the vocabulary in the book that really works together to get a beginning reader to really keep going and to really enjoy what they're reading," says Tina. Read anything good lately? Your answer will be YES after checking out our annual summer beach reads episodes. We have so many book pics this year that we're breaking it up into two episodes. Part 1 will cover adult titles. Part 2 will cover kid picks from preschool to young adult (YA). Our literary guide is Tina Ferguson, owner of Face in a Book bookstore. This summer, Tina says romance is still hot, so to speak — but she's also seeing a trend in "feel good" books. "I think that feel-good books are trending because we just need some uplifting in our day. And so that's been a really nice thing to see as well. And then I see a lot of like speculative fiction, a little bit of sci-fi coming back, too," Tina said. Tina's picks: "When Women Were Dragons"/Kelly Barnhill "Saturday Night at the Lakeside Supper Club"/J. Ryan Stradal "Yellowface"/R. F. Kuang "The Midnight Library"/Matt Haig "You Could Make This Place Beautiful"/Maggie Smith "Happy Place"/Emily Henry "The Covenant of Water"/Abraham Verghese "The Wager"/David Grann Finley Donovan Series/Elle Cosimano "Trust"/Hernan Diaz On this 'Dying to Ask': The book trends emerging for the summer of 2023. How to fit more reading into your life. Tina's top 10 books to bring to the beach this summer.
