In our Lower Story lives, we are vulnerable to the same sin that plagued the northern kingdom of Israel: we want to worship gods of our own choosing. None of us would ever admit to idol worship, but consider how much time, energy, and money we spend on things that have no eternal value. Then compare that to the time, energy, and money we devote to God.

Chad and Keith discuss the importance of the centrality of scripture and introduce the concept of upper and lower stories in the scriptural narrative.
We hear a lot about justice these days--Lower Story justice. Upper Story justice--God's justice--is something much more.
Daniel: Faithful in Exile (2021) | Preacher: Ben Green | God knows what’s going on, and though all the ‘beasts’ of the Lower Story don’t know it yet – their days are numbered, because the Lamb wins.
Daniel: Faithful in Exile (2021) | Preacher: Ben Green | In the Upper Story God is weaving what will one day be a beautiful tapestry. In the Lower Story it’s like the back of a tapestry: a tangled mess.
Going DeeperBut to Jonah this seemed very wrong, and he became angry. He prayed to the LORD, “Isn’t this what I said, LORD, when I was still at home? That is what I tried to forestall by fleeing to Tarshish. I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity. Now, LORD, take away my life, for it is better for me to die than to live.”Jonah 4:1-3In the above passage Jonah is upset because is ending h to the Ninevites. Jonah as many good reasons for not wanting to go and serve these people he finds deplorable. Is there a group of people that, if God asked you to serve them, you would genuinely hesitate? It could be a political or cultural group. It cold be a competing business. It could even be members of your family. Who are your Ninevites? What would it take for you to give up your comfortable perspective? Has God ever put you in an uncomfortable situation in order to reach or serve someone you didn't like? What was the outcome? What did you learn.Isaiah 59:9 – “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.” - How did you know God was asking this of you? Did it require you to trust Him?If you were to relay your "Nineveh" story to a teenager, how would you frame it? What would you say? How should they pray?Teaching NotesBut to Jonah this seemed very wrong, and he became angry. He prayed to the LORD, “Isn’t this what I said, LORD, when I was still at home? Now, LORD, take away my life, for it is better for me to die than to live.” Jonah 4:1-3 Why is Jonah so upset? Jonah is selfish Jonah is prejudice Jonah is filled with pride Then the LORD God provided a leafy plant and made it grow up over Jonah to give shade for his head to ease his discomfort, and Jonah was very happy about the plant. Jonah 4:6 Jonah wanted to die, and said, “It would be better for me to die than to live.” Jonah 4:8But the LORD said, “You have been concerned about this plant, though you did not tend it or make it grow. It sprang up overnight and died overnight. And should I not have concern for the great city of Nineveh, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell their right hand from their left—and also many animals?” Jonah 4:10-11Application When God doesn’t make sense to you…trust that our linear perspective from the Lower Story doesn’t tell the whole story. As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts. Isaiah 59:9When God doesn’t make sense to you…trust that God will make things right in his time. When God doesn’t make sense…trust his grace and love is great and applies to all people, including us. Going Deeper DiscussionHow did Joseph’s glimpse of the Upper Story give him the ability to forgive his brothers? How might this help you forgive someone who has betrayed you? Describe a time in your life where in the Lower Story things looked bleak, but ultimately in the Upper Story it turned out for the good. If Michelangelo painted a scene of your life on the Sistine Chapel, what would it look like? Teaching NotesGod wants us to read the Bible as we would view a mural. There are two stories going on in the Bible at the same time:The Lower Story is our individual story and how we see life from our perspective. The Upper Story is the story God’s is writing The Story of Joseph (Beginning in Genesis 37)Age 17Betrayed - Promoted - Forgives - Dies “The Lord was with Joseph so that he prospered…” Genesis 38:2 While Joseph was there in prison, the Lord was with him; he showed him kindness and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden. Genesis 39:20-21 So Pharaoh sent for Joseph, and he was quickly brought from the dungeon. When he had shaved and changed his clothes, he came before Pharaoh. Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I had a dream, and no one can interpret it. But I have heard it said of you that when you hear a dream you can interpret it.” “I cannot do it,” Joseph replied to Pharaoh, “but God will give Pharaoh the answer he desires.”Genesis 41:14-16Joseph said to his brothers, “I am Joseph! Is my father still living?” But his brothers were not able to answer him, because they were terrified at his presence. Then Joseph said to his brothers, “Come close to me.” When they had done so, he said, “I am your brother Joseph, the one you sold into Egypt! And now, do not be distressed and do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here, because it was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you. For two years now there has been famine in the land, and for the next five years there will be no plowing and reaping. But God sent me ahead of you to preserve for you a remnant on earth and to save your lives by a great deliverance.“So then, it was not you who sent me here, but God. He made me father to Pharaoh, lord of his entire household and ruler of all Egypt. Genesis 45:3-8Joseph stayed in Egypt, along with all his father’s family. He lived a hundred and ten years and saw the third generation of Ephraim’s children. Also the children of Makir son of Manasseh were placed at birth on Joseph’s knees. Genesis 50:22-23 Application Have you ever been in a place where the Lower Story in your life looked one way, but in the end, you caught a glimpse of the Upper Story and it made sense of it and a good story emerged? And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28If Michelangelo painted a scene of your life on the Sistine Chapel, what would it look like?

Gods nature doesnt change, he remains the same since the begining of time. In this talk we explore how gracious and merciful God actually is in the Old Testament, all the way up until Christs ultimate sarifice on the cross.

The main purpose of "The Story" is God's desire to be with us. He loves us and wants to be at one with us but we keep messing that up. The Bible is God's unfolding plan to be with us. His Upper Story connecting with our Lower Story. The story of Joseph is one such story.
Jesus has performed a ministry that was anything but ordinary. Now darkness is about to set in. In His final days Jesus pays the ultimate cost for our salvation; death for our sins. Jesus will demonstrate in a powerful way the price He is willing to pay for a relationship with us. Finally the Upper Story has synced up with the Lower Story. One question remains … will you sync your Lower Story with God’s Upper Story and pay the price that Christ asked us to pay?
For seventy years God’s people have found themselves in exile in the lands of Babylon and Persia. Through their exile God has not forgotten about them. Having a relationship with mankind has always been His goal and now after a time of separation God is ready to once again take up residence amongst His people. How will the remnant of two small tribes fair against the opposition all around them? How does their lower story relate to our own lower story? How does all that relate to God’s upper story in our own lives? Today, we find out!
The final days are now upon Judah. They experienced the rise and fall of both good and bad kings. However, the disobedience to God has become too much. Because of His righteous grace the time has come for God to discipline his children in Judah. The pain and the heartbreak are gut wrenching to read about. While the Lower Story is beginning to look bleak, we are reminded that God is still in control and God is still working out His Upper Story pursuit of restoring relationship with humankind.
Ever since the Garden of Eden we have been following God’s Upper Story. God wants us to be a part of His community by putting Him first in our lives. But in the Lower Story we have seen the people reject God, resulting in a divided nation. Still God patiently waits for them to come to their senses and return to Him, but they ignore His commands and the prophets He sends to them. It is now time for God to act. And He does so, decisively, according to His words of warning.

In God’s Upper Story goal of doing life with us, He was very patient with Israel in their Lower Story lives. For over two centuries through the reign of 19 kings, God kept sending His messengers, the prophets. These men were faithful and passionate in their delivering God’s message and warnings to His people. God’s call for His people to come home was often ignored. Finally God said “enough” and divided the nation of Israel into two nations. Now He would work through the Southern Kingdom of Judah to accomplish His plan of a restored relationship with humanity.

Our role in our Lower Story is to point people to God by the way we live and speak. We are to live each day with the notion that we are to be Jesus to the people around us. Since none of us are perfect, this includes how we handle life when we sin. The world is watching. What do you do when you sin terribly and tragically? What can we learn from David’s example of how he handled the sin in his life? How can God use us in the Lower Story, when we sin, to accomplish His Upper Story goal of doing life with us?
