This week, we receive Madeline Rose, Climate Campaign Director at Pacific Environment to present the report Shady Ships - Retail Giants Pollute Communities and Climate with Fossil-Fueled Ocean Shipping.Pacific Environment, a global environmental organisation dedicated to the preservation of communities and wildlife of the Pacific Rim, has been working on cleaner shipping policies for 15 years, with a consultative seat at the IMO for 10 years. "Everyone is talking about transportation decarbonization, i.e. how to electrify cars, how do we electrify trucks. That conversation has not extended to the seas. Ocean shipping is really getting a free pass in the public conversation about transportation decarbonization."Recognizing the retail companies, the actual cargo owners are left out and not actively participating in the forums on decarbonization, Pacific Environment decided to kick start a conversation on the responsibilities of the largest retailers in the US . This initial investigation was produced to better understand the pollution and public health impact of maritime shipping, i.e. the shipping of imported goods in the US: By importing goods to the U.S. on dirty, fossil fueled ships in 2019, just 15 retail companies emitted as much climate pollution as the energy use of 1.5 million U.S. homes."These major companies are hiding from the public the true amount of pollution they produce from their supply chain. Of the top 15 maritime importers in the US, only Ikea and Nike are reporting their ocean maritime emissions" "Amazon just launched Shipment Zero - making a commitment to their customers that there will be zero emissions of their products from the warehouse to their front door. But they completely omitted everything it takes to get a product from Asia all the way across the Pacific Ocean to the warehouse"

Everyday, we are reminded of the war and violent conflict that surrounds us. Televisions, radios and newspapers flood us with the daily reality of humanity at war. But what remains largely invisible are those at the forefront of conflict -peacebuilders, striving for peace. For many it is easier to name warlords than peacebuilders. It is time to move peacebuilding out of the shadows and into the spotlight. We need to highlight its use as a far better alternative to never-ending wars. But how do we change the narrative surrounding peace? How do we widen its scope of reach? Madeline Rose, the Director of +Peace, a new collective action campaign platform housed at the Alliance for Peacebuilding, dropped in to discuss opening up the space of peacebuilding and building a louder peacebuilding movements through the +Peace coalition. Born in the US, Madeline was influenced in her path towards peace by stand out events such as the invasion of Iraq. Through observing violence, she was drawn towards creating peace. With violent conflict at a 30 year high and hate and polarisation consuming societies, the time to act is now. Madeline delves into how the +Peace coalition is moving towards changing the world of peacebuilding. Music credit: 'Coffee Shopping' by Bruno Freitas, licensed under hooksounds.com.

Madeline Rose is a Senior Global Advocacy Advisor at Mercy Corps, a global humanitarian and development NGO, where she works to create and implement public policies to solve some of the world’s biggest problems. She’s a policy expert and advocacy strategist with innovative problem-solving skills, evidenced by her success in designing Mercy Corps’ first globally coordinated advocacy campaign, which she now leads. Her current focus is passing a bill called the “Global Fragility and Violence Reduction Act of 2018” in the U.S. Congress that will help end violence in Guatemala, Nigeria, Iraq and many other conflict-affected countries. Madeline travels frequently and works with her Mercy Corps colleagues in countries around the world to find out what may be driving violence in their countries in order to identify solutions to stopping it. Madeline studied Diplomacy and World Affairs at Occidental College and during her time there, interned with the United Nations. After graduating, Madeline moved to D.C. and worked in the Capitol Hill office of former Rep. Mike Honda (D-CA) as a Legislative Correspondent and Staff Assistant. It was in Rep. Honda’s office that Madeline learned the value of mentorship and truly kicked off her career. Since then, she’s worked her way up at Mercy Corps, moving from policy advisor up to her current title. Where others focus on finding problems, Madeline focuses on creating solutions to make the world a better place.
