We're looking at the science of the microbots from Disney and Marvel's Big Hero 6 in our latest episode.“Are you satisfied with your care?”BaymaxConsidering how the entire mission statement of our show involves the intersection of science and story, and how we love the thought of getting younger people excited about STEM, it's something of a wonder that we didn't get to Disney's Big Hero 6 sooner. While technically a superhero story and loosely based on a Marvel property, Big Hero 6 is uniquely original and as wonderfully wholesome as it is action-packed. But best of all (for our purposes, at least), it's got a central concept and plot device that absolutely beg to be unpacked from every imaginable angle. No, sadly, it's not about what makes Baymax so adorably huggable. The piece we're focusing on for today's episode is microbots and the attendant neural transmitter which controls them. This is what kicks off virtually all the action in the film, the one with the most real world parallels, and the one that we feel is the best fodder for discussion…for now. We'll get to our beloved Baymax in a future episode if enough of you ask for him!Watch the latest episode of Does it Fly? right here…https://youtu.be/Whc6qcMG1FUSUGGESTED VIEWING While there's some additional Big Hero 6 media and lore out there, we based our discussion on this episode solely on the events that take place in that movie…which is plenty good enough as it won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature in 2015. But if you (like us) can't get enough of Baymax, there's also a Disney+ animated series focused solely on the big cuddly robot titled, appropriately, Baymax!. There's also a Big Hero 6 animated series that picks up directly after the events of the film. We're still hoping for a big screen sequel, though!FURTHER READING Do you want to delve a little deeper into the facts, concepts, and stories Hakeem and Tamara referenced in today's episode? Of course you do! Nanobots vs. MicrobotsHakeem said it best if you're trying to understand the difference: “A nanobot is a thousand times smaller than a microbot,” although some sources seem to continue to use them interchangeably. But to give you an idea of some of the more exciting developments, there are those that can manipulate a single cell and we are inching (sorry) closer to clinical trials to deploy nano and microbots in human health care. There are reasons to believe this could end up getting us closer to a cure for cancer (yes, that's a video, but it fit better here than in our “suggested viewing” section).Brain Computer Interfaces + Nanobots = Coolness! We also covered the topic of Brain Computer Interfaces a little bit in our episodes on RoboCop and 3 Body Problem, but it's just as relevant here. Here's a refresher/overview for you.And while we're at it, this paper on the intersection of BCI's and actual nanobots for real world purposes reads like something that would actually exist in the fictional world of Big Hero 6, but it's actually real!Collective BehaviorSure, the microbots in Big Hero 6 behave in intensely coordinated ways, but you know what else already does that really well in our world? Drone shows! And The Oscar Goes To…Who says that Marvel movies aren't Academy Award worthy? This one sure was!WANT MORE FROM DOES IT FLY?Big Hero 6 isn't the only Disney animated movie to tackle superheroes. Time to take a quick detour into yet another movie that most don't associate with Marvel. Despite being part of Disney theatrical animated features, Big Hero 6 does indeed come from the comic world. To what extent is discussed on the show. Following up Disney's Frozen was no small feat either. How did this colorful futuristic superhero tale fare for our three hosts? Listen in and come back next week as we go back to Matthew Vaughn with the first entry into Kingsman.

Disney Revival (2009-2021) films include The Princess and the Frog, Tangled, Winnie the Pooh, Wreck It Ralph, Frozen, Big Hero 6, Zootopia, Moana, Ralph Breaks the Internet, Frozen 2, Raya and the Last Dragon, and Encanto. These 12 films span a range of just 12 years and represent some modern favorites in Disney history. Like with our Disney Renaissance episodes, we argue that the music is perhaps the most memorable aspect of these Disney Revival Era films, and a few have gone on to become the most popular of all time. These Disney films are loved by so many Disney fans, and in this two-part podcast episode, we dive deep into the music. In Part 1 of the Music of the Disney Revival Era, we discuss the history of this period of time and the definition of the Disney Revival Era. We then dive deep into the music of The Princess and the Frog, Tangled, Winnie the Pooh, Wreck It Ralph, and Frozen, discussing why we believe these soundtracks are so beloved and memorable. In Part 2, we have the same conversations about the music of Big Hero 6, Zootopia, Moana, Ralph Breaks the Internet, Frozen 2, Raya and the Last Dragon, and Encanto. We close out Part 2 with a recap of the music of the Disney Revival Era. What are your favorite songs from the Disney movies we discussed in this episode? About Bert Klein - His passion and talent were such that he managed to become a working professional in the cartoon industry while still in high school. At the time, he was a student in Rowland Heights High School's animation program, he was also working at Film Roman, juggling textbooks with pencils and animation paper. His career progressed rapidly from there … After high school, Mr. Klein leaped full-time into the animation business. (Attending Cal Arts was an option, but the pay was much better working as a layout artist on the t.v. cartoon The Critic.) Television, however, was only his first stop. Disney soon came calling, and Bert found himself working on The Lion King and the string of Disney animated features that followed. Happy Magical Monday y'all! This week we are talking about Big Hero 6. This movie gives us all the feels and we talk about all of them - grief, love, friendship and everything in between. This movie has so many life lessons and gives us so much to learn from and open our eyes to. Be sure to tune in next week - we are discussing The Princess Diaries
Our hosts have watched more than a few stories that featured characters who had been or are orphaned in the course of the movie. BIG HERO 6 is a unique movie in that it dares to ask - what if Disney did a double orphan? Incredibly sad and surprising, yes, but also not a bad film. Because unlike so many other orphan movies where these characters are not allowed to grieve properly, this family animated movie is all about grief. And while that may sound like a bummer, it's pulled off in large part thanks to the loveable and huggable Baymax.
