Progesterone is one of the most important hormones for fertility, healthy ovulation, and sustaining early pregnancy, yet so many women are never taught how it actually works. In this episode, Dr. Leah and Dr. Morgan sit down with fertility nutritionist Sophia Pavia to break down the truth about low progesterone, luteal phase defects, ovulation quality, and why so many women today are struggling with hormone imbalances, infertility, and pregnancy loss.We unpack how progesterone is made, why ovulation is essential for healthy hormone balance, what “unopposed estrogen” really means, and the signs your luteal phase may need support. Sophia also explains why conventional medicine can be hesitant about progesterone supplementation, when it may be appropriate, and how nutrition, stress, blood sugar balance, and cycle tracking can help support stronger ovulation and healthier progesterone production naturally. If you're trying to conceive, navigating recurrent loss, or simply want to better understand your hormones, this episode is packed with practical education and empowering insight.00:00 Intro + Sophia Returns To The Podcast01:24 Why Low Progesterone Matters for Fertility02:34 Why So Many Women Struggle with Progesterone Today13:17 How PCOS, Endometriosis & Hypothalamic Amenorrhea Affect Progesterone15:49 How Progesterone Is Actually Made in the Body19:59 Estrogen vs Progesterone: What Balance Really Means25:49 Can You Have a Weak Ovulation?33:40 Egg Quality vs Progesterone: Which Comes First?35:24 Why Doctors Often Hesitate to Prescribe Progesterone41:59 When Progesterone Supplementation May Help46:16 Signs Your Luteal Phase Needs Support47:56 How to Support Progesterone Naturally50:42 Where to Find Sophia + Final EncouragementResources From This Episode:Sophia's Website - https://www.ttcnutritionist.com/Follow Sophia on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/ttc.nutritionistOther Related Episodes:Episode #31: The Power of Progesterone - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/healthy-as-a-mother/id1663942916?i=1000625679300Episode #108: Surviving a Ruptured Ectopic Pregnancy with Sophia Pavia - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/healthy-as-a-mother/id1663942916?i=1000703730128Healthy As A Mother Podcast | YouTubeHealthy As A Mother Podcast | InstagramHealthy As A Mother Podcast | TikTokHealthy As A Mother Podcast | Merch StoreFind more from Dr. Leah:Dr. Leah Gordon | InstagramDr. Leah Gordon | WebsiteWomanhood Wellness | WebsiteFind more from Dr. Morgan:Dr. Morgan MacDermott | InstagramDr. Morgan MacDermott | WebsiteUse code HEALTHYMOTHER and save 10% at EarthleyUse code HEALTHYMOTHER and save 15% at RedmondFor 20% off your first order at Needed, use code HEALTHYMOTHERSave $260 at Lumebox, use code HEALTHYASAMOTHERUse code HAAM and save 10% at Fond

If you have ever felt the ceiling in your practice — or lived the gap in pregnancy loss support yourself — The Missing Piece is a free three day masterclass where we name what traditional grief support has been missing and build the framework bereaved mothers actually deserve. Starts 1st June - Join HERE What if your menstrual cycle had been trying to tell you something for years, and no one ever taught you how to listen? In this episode, Sharna sits down with Emma Goff, certified fertility awareness educator, miscarriage doula, and host of the Cyclical Doula Podcast. Emma works at the intersection of cycle literacy, body trust, and reproductive loss, and this conversation is one of the most practically empowering episodes we've recorded. Emma shares her own journey into this work — including growing up as the child of a mother who experienced multiple pregnancy losses — and how that shaped the deeply attuned, cyclical support she now offers women navigating fertility, loss, and everything in between. In this episode we cover: Why your menstrual cycle is a vital sign — and what it might be telling you about your reproductive health right now The impact of long-term hormonal birth control on ovulation and cycle health — and what "coming back online" actually looks like What to expect from your body after pregnancy loss (including the often-overlooked postpartum experience that follows every loss) How to begin tracking your cycle after loss using cervical fluid and basal body temperature — and why this can be profoundly empowering Why that first bleed after loss doesn't have to blindside you — and how cycle awareness can help you prepare emotionally and physically The fertility window, subsequent pregnancy anxiety, and trusting your body to show you when it's ready How Emma walks beside her clients through pregnancy, loss, and beyond — as a cyclical doula, not just a birth professional Using fertility awareness methods to avoid pregnancy after loss without returning to hormonal contraception This episode is for every woman who was handed a pill and never once asked how her cycle actually worked. It's for the woman who felt something was wrong for years and was told she was fine. And it's for the woman standing on the other side of loss, wondering how to find her way back to her body. All of these have one thing in common: pelvic floor health. Notice that the commonality is NOT pregnancy or delivery, like is often believed. Women can have pelvic floor issues, like urinary incontinence, when they are young, unmarried, or have never had biological children. Part 1 of a 2-Part Series: Fertility Over 40Fertility over 40 is becoming more common than ever, but with it comes confusion, fear, and a lot of outdated information. In this episode of Healthy As A Mother, we begin a two-part fertility series focused on conception after age 40. We break down what actually changes with age, what matters most for fertility, and — most importantly — what you can influence.Because chronological age is only one piece of the picture. You'll learn why egg quality matters more than egg count, how lifestyle and metabolic health impact fertility outcomes, and how women can support ovulation, hormone balance, and mitochondrial health as they age. If you've been told your age alone determines your fertility, this episode offers a more nuanced and hopeful perspective. In this episode, we cover:• Why chronological age doesn't equal ovarian health• The real role of egg quality vs. egg count (AMH explained)• How mitochondrial health impacts fertility• Environmental toxins and hidden fertility stressors• Blood sugar balance and metabolic health after 40• Inflammation, oxidative stress, and hormone disruption• Ovulation strength and progesterone production• Short luteal phases and why they matter for implantation• Signs of low progesterone you shouldn't ignore• How lifestyle changes can meaningfully improve fertility outcomes00:00 — Trailer & Podcast Intro03:25 — Episode begins: Fertility over 40 overview05:10 — Chronological age vs ovarian environment21:30 — Egg quality, lifestyle, and metabolic health23:58 — Inflammation, stress & nutrient deficiencies explained24:25 — Progesterone, luteal phase & cycle changes after 4025:10 — Signs of low progesterone to watch for48:43 — IVF myths: why optimization matters first49:12 — Why IVF doesn't bypass egg or sperm quality49:42 — Rethinking fertility decisions after 4050:51 — Fertility as a marker of overall healthFind more from Dr. Leah:Dr. Leah Gordon | InstagramDr. Leah Gordon | WebsiteWomanhood Wellness | WebsiteFind more from Dr. Morgan:Dr. Morgan MacDermott | InstagramDr. Morgan MacDermott | WebsiteUse code HEALTHYMOTHER and save 10% at FondUse code HEALTHYMOTHER and save 15% at RedmondFor 20% off your first order at Needed, use code HEALTHYMOTHERSave $260 at Lumebox, use code HEALTHYASAMOTHER

How Our Culture & Systems Failed Women Who Want to Be Mothers

Healthy As A Mother

Our culture and systems have failed many women who want to be mothers, not through malice, but through neglect, misalignment, and outdated priorities. In this episode, we explore how education, feminism, medicine, and career culture shaped a generation of women who were never truly prepared for motherhood. This is a nuanced, honest conversation about how our culture and systems have failed many women who want to be mothers. We want to say this clearly up front: this conversation reflects our lived experiences and what we see in our work. It is not meant to invalidate women who had supportive, empowering paths to motherhood, nor does it represent every experience across different socioeconomic or cultural backgrounds. What we explore here is a pattern. For decades, women were encouraged to prioritize education, career, and productivity, often with little to no preparation for health, fertility, or motherhood. Feminism brought women freedom, opportunity, and choice, and we honor that deeply. But like all cultural movements, there were unintended consequences that many women are only now grappling with.In this conversation, we discuss:• Why motherhood was treated as an afterthought rather than a life path• How feminism empowered women — and where systems failed to evolve alongside it• The lack of reproductive and health education for young women• How birth control often masked dysfunction instead of addressing root causes• Why so many women feel blindsided by fertility struggles in their 30s• The cost of prioritizing weddings, careers, and productivity over preparation for motherhood• Maternal burnout, postpartum strain, and the lack of systemic support• What a more integrative, honest, and compassionate approach could look likeThis is not about blame. It's about awareness because we can't change what we don't acknowledge. Our hope is that by having these conversations openly, we can support women now and create better systems for future generations. In this episode of The Wholesome Fertility Podcast, host Michelle Oravitz breaks down one of the most common fertility myths, the belief that pregnancy can only occur on the exact day of ovulation. Popular culture and even many fertility apps often portray conception as a single-day event, but science tells a different story. The truth is, sperm can survive in the reproductive tract for up to five days, creating a much wider fertile window than most people realize. Michelle explains what the 5-day fertile window really means, why the “Day 14 ovulation” rule is misleading, and how women can better understand their unique cycles. She also shares practical guidance on tracking ovulation accurately using basal body temperature (BBT) charting, cervical mucus observation, LH strips, and hormone-monitoring devices. Key Takeaways:  How cervical mucus supports sperm survival and why hydration is essential. The impact of irregular cycles caused by thyroid health, PCOS, stress, or travel. "I believe women cannot protect what they do not know. If we are illiterate about our own bodies, if we don't understand how they're designed to work in a state of health, we are deprived of our right to true informed consent in healthcare decisions. And this is never more critical than in decisions about reproductive health, including birth control." This is particularly true with young women with intellectual disabilities. Katie Vidmar who is not only an expert in menstrual cycle literacy, but also has a daughter who has Intellectual disabilities will walk us through how we can help a young woman understand the gift and goodness of her body. All humans deserve to be honored in the goodness of there own bodies, to be given the same respect and value as any person, despite their intellectual challenges. Katie will show how we can serve this population with the dignity that women with these intellectual challenges deserve. It is a beautiful conversation that will touch many of you who know a young women in this siut This isn't about being “anti–birth control.” It's about being pro–informed consent. Women deserve the freedom to make choices rooted in knowledge, not fear or misinformation. Liberation begins when we discover the brilliance of our bodies and learn to work with them—not against them. And the truth is, we already have models for doing this. Body Literacy. Cycle Tracking. Menstrual Health Triage. Simplified Fertility Awareness. These tools exist, and they've been brought successfully to under-resourced populations. Now is the time to scale them. Why? Because every system in the body is interconnected and ordered toward reproductive health. Bones, muscles, the cardiovascular system, digestion, all of it supports the capacity to create and sustain life. So when we address the root causes of reproductive health disorders, the ripple effects extend far beyond fertility. Healing hormonal imbalance, for example, doesn't just regulate cycles it protects a women's health. This is why root-cause women's health should be the crown jewel of healthcare reform. Not a side conversation, central to it. ✨ About Katie E. Vidmar Katie E. Vidmar, MTS, is a Body Literacy and Fertility Awareness Educator from North Dakota. In this episode, we call out the problems that have arisen as a result of adoption of and adherence to the Freebirth Society ideology while also holding space for a woman's legal and moral right to choose to have a Freebirth.Ultimately, this is about the need for leaders to act in integrity and for everyone to remember that rarely two truths exist in extremes. All choices are valid, however in order for them to be authentically empowered, they must be made with true informed consent and an informed risk assessment which is unlikely to happen if a birthworker has solely received a virtual training rooted in biases, hyperbole, and a lack of evidence, just as much as it's unlikely to happen with a fearful OB who is encouraging weekly routine ultrasounds and a 39 week induction. We unpack the overused and misused phrase “variations of normal” in order to delineate a few examples of what would actually be abnormal and a reason to seek additional support.Freebirth continues to be a valid choice, however women deserve to have the full scope of outcomes objectively presented to them in all fairness.Risk is inherently everywhere, and there will always be a mysterious element to loss, however the key is to walk into your pregnancy with a true sense of confidence and options rather than a false sense of one.Recommended resources:Free MOTR Questions Guide to Vet Your Birthkeeper/AttendantReddit, so you can be the judge of what's wrong with this organizationNathan Riley podcast episode featuring Kristine LauriaDr. Sarah Wickham's book “What's Right For Me”“Whose Body Is It” podcast episode featuring midwife Mary Lou SingletonSupport the showJOIN OUR NEW, PRIVATE COMMUNITY! Hey sister! This episode is such a special one! I had the absolute pleasure of chatting with Meagan, a missionary in Thailand, who went through Fertility Framework DIY and experienced a radical transformation in her health, her hormones, and her faith. Meagan shares her story of being on birth control for six and a half years, how she thought feeling "gray and blah" was just normal, and how God led her to uncover the truth about her fertility. Through Fertility Framework, she successfully came off birth control, detoxed her body, and started charting her cycle—and the results have been life-changing. If you've ever felt like you're just not yourself or wondered if there's a better way to support your hormones, this episode is for you. Meagan's story will inspire and encourage you to take charge of your health in a way that aligns with God's design. Episode Highlights: The emotional and physical toll of being on birth control for years How fertility awareness completely changed Meagan's outlook on her body The spiritual battle behind birth control and why faith matters in your health Why detoxing after birth control is so important How Meagan is preparing for future pregnancy while avoiding pregnancy naturally The power of learning to surrender your fertility to God How fertility awareness can be a tool for both avoiding and achieving pregnancy In His good Grace, Bekah   Resources & Links: ✨I've put together a free faith-filled booklet to help guide you through this journey. It's called Faith-Driven Fertility, and it's full of practical steps and encouragement for trusting God while supporting your body for conception.
