We're looking at the science of the microbots from Disney and Marvel's Big Hero 6 in our latest episode.“Are you satisfied with your care?”BaymaxConsidering how the entire mission statement of our show involves the intersection of science and story, and how we love the thought of getting younger people excited about STEM, it's something of a wonder that we didn't get to Disney's Big Hero 6 sooner. While technically a superhero story and loosely based on a Marvel property, Big Hero 6 is uniquely original and as wonderfully wholesome as it is action-packed. But best of all (for our purposes, at least), it's got a central concept and plot device that absolutely beg to be unpacked from every imaginable angle.No, sadly, it's not about what makes Baymax so adorably huggable. The piece we're focusing on for today's episode is microbots and the attendant neural transmitter which controls them. This is what kicks off virtually all the action in the film, the one with the most real world parallels, and the one that we feel is the best fodder for discussion…for now. There's also a Big Hero 6 animated series that picks up directly after the events of the film. Admittedly, not all of these cartoon IP relaunches have impressed but Jonny Quest is damn good from what I've seen, not reinventing the characters but providing a platform for them to adapt into a modern structure and to explore the family and cultural dynamics inherent to the series. Michael Woodside is an Animator who has been working in the industry for 15 years. Currently at Walt Disney Animation Studios, he has contributed as an Animator on films that include Frozen, Big Hero 6, Zootopia, and Moana. He was an Animation Supervisor for Frozen 2 and Encanto, helping to shepherd the musical sequences through Animation. Star Wars Nite tickets went on sale for Inspire level Magic Key Holders Tuesday, February 20th, with other Magic Key Holder pre-sales happening on Wednesday and Thursday the 21st and 22nd. The general public can get tickets starting Friday, February 23 no earlier than 9am Disneyland time. There will be a new “notify me” option for the virtual queue that will email you when your window to order has arrived. The Cast Member union effort calling itself “Magic United” will be represented by the Actors' Equity Association – a union who currently represents performers and stage managers at Disney World, Broadway, and in many live theater productions in the US. Magic United will include entertainment cast members, which includes theatrical, parade, and character performers.
