Django Nudo and The Smut Peddler welcome Robert Page, the visionary creator behind the revolutionary sex education series "The Lover's Guide". Page delights listeners with extraordinary behind-the-scenes stories from his illustrious career, including a surreal phone call from Stanley Kubrick seeking advice on directing intimate scenes for "Eyes Wide Shut" and an unexpected encounter with tabloid journalism involving Heather Mills McCartney. Perhaps most surprisingly, Page reveals how his educational series may have influenced the Catholic Church to soften its stance on masturbation after the programme demonstrated how widespread the practice is among both men and women. The conversation thoroughly explores the remarkable origin story of "The Lover's Guide" in the early 1990s, strategically positioned in a unique cultural window between older clinical sex education films and the explosion of internet pornography. Page recounts his pivotal meeting with British film censor Jim Ferman during the AIDS crisis, where he unexpectedly received permission to show explicit sexual content for educational purposes, including erections, intercourse, and oral sex—provided they "didn't linger" on any particular activity and included a doctor as presenter. This breakthrough allowed Page to create what would become a cultural phenomenon that invested the equivalent of £5 million (in today's money) in production values.Page shares fascinating insights into the series' development philosophy, explaining their deliberate approach to portraying intimacy with genuine warmth and respect rather than clinical detachment or pornographic sensationalism. He discusses the considerable challenges of finding performers willing to appear in such groundbreaking content, the scandals that erupted when some were discovered to have pornographic backgrounds. The series ultimately proved so popular that it knocked Hollywood blockbusters like "Die Hard" and "The Little Mermaid" off the video charts and was purchased predominantly by women (55%).The conversation takes several poignant turns as Page reveals personal struggles during production, including his marriage falling apart while creating a series about enhancing relationships. He also shares the tragic story of the series' star couple, Wendy Anne Paige and her husband Tony, who became celebrities through the programme before experiencing a downward spiral that ended with Wendy's death "in penury" in December 2024.There's revealing anecdotes about international reception, including unauthorised Chinese translations that sold millions without compensation, censorship battles in Japan, and Dutch companies that purchased distribution rights only to bury the product while creating their own competing versions. Page expresses particular pride in the series' unexpected success in France, noting the irony of "the English teaching the French about sex."The conversation concludes with Page discussing the enduring legacy of "The Lover's Guide" thirty years after its initial release, with both The Guardian and The Sun recently publishing features acknowledging its continuing relevance. Page shares touching stories about receiving thousands of letters from couples whose relationships were saved by the series and expresses hope that its core messages about communication, respect, and genuine intimacy can still positively impact relationships today—values he believes are needed more than ever in our increasingly divided world.Throughout the interview, Page's passion for his groundbreaking work shines through, along with his sense of humour and genuine belief in the power of education to foster healthier, more loving relationships. This episode offers listeners not just a nostalgic look back at a cultural phenomenon, but a thoughtful reflection on how approaches to sex education have evolved over decades and what might be lost or gained in our modern digital landscape.
This week we return to our video nasties feature chronicling the list of films banned by the BBFC in Britain from the 70-80s. This time we are looking at Madhouse (1981) not to be confused with the Vincent price horror from the 70s. We discuss the films position on the video nasties list, the possibly gruesome reasons why it made the list and reasons why it shouldn't have. We themes of child violence, animal cruelty and warring families with mental health issues why would this film not make the list. Come and discuss your thoughts of the episode or Madhouse with us @cmthpodcast If you enjoy our content then please subscribe and leave us a lovely rating and review to help our podcast grow.
Night of the Bloody Apes (1969), Don't Go in the House (1979), Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker (1981) In 1984, in the U.K., the Video Recording Act was passed, which required certification of all video releases by the British Board of Film Classification, aka BBFC. This all came about due to a list of video titles that a group of various religious and other social groups run by the likes of Mary Whitehouse, deemed unsuitable to be viewed and thought for sure it would help corrupt the youth of England. The initial list had 72 titles on it, both films that had already been released after obtaining a BBFC certificate but now was deemed too offensive, as well as a whole bunch of other titles that were believed to fall under the obscenity law. If you own a shop that rented or sold one of these titles, you could be shut down, fined, and possibly even go to jail for it. And this all took place, not in the dark ages, but in the mid 1980s. Hard to believe it, especially growing up here in the U.S. Some of those titles have only recently gotten passed and released over in the U.K., even 40 years later. Blows the mind. In this episode, we discuss not only the whole Video Nasty era, but cover 3 films from that list, with each of us watching all 3 and see if we made it through without turning us into mindless deviants. Oops. Too late. Films mentioned in this episode: The Bat Woman (1968), Beast in Heat (1977), The Body Snatcher (1957), The Braniac (1962), The Burning (1981), Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker (1981), Curse of the Crying Woman (1962), The Curious Dr. Hump (1969), Dead of Winter (1987), Doctor of Doom (1963), Don't Answer the Phone (1980), Don't Go in the House (1979), Don't Look in the Basement (1973), Don't Open Till Christmas (1984), Driller Killer (1979), Entrails of a Virgin (1986), Eyes of a Stranger (1981), Faces of Death (1978), Fear No Evil (1981), The Gestapo's Last Orgy (1977), Horror High (1973), I Drink Your Blood (1971), I Spit on Your Grave (1978), Let Sleeping Corpses Lie (1974), Maniac (1980), Mortuary (1982), Mother's Day (1980), Nekromantik (1988), New York Ripper (1982), Night of the Bloody Apes (1969), Perdita Durango (1997), The Prowler (1981), Psycho (1960), Roar (1981), Santo and Blue Demon vs. Dracula and the Wolf Man (1973), Santo and Blue Demon vs. the Monsters (1970), Santo vs. Frankenstein's Daughter (1972), Santo vs. the Head Hunters (1971), Santo in the Treasure of Dracula (1969),Santo in the Vengeance of the Mummy (1971), Shock Waves (1977), Silent Night Deadly Night (1984), Speed (1994), SS Experiment Love Camp (1976), Subspecies (1991), Suspiria (1977), Terrorvision (1986), Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), Twister (1996), Unhinged (1982), El Vampiro (1957), The Wresting Women vs. the Aztec Mummy (1964)

It's episode 296…and you'd be surprised what the human brain can edit out when it can't handle the truth. Censor (2021) follows Enid, a censor at the BBFC during the moral panic around ‘Video Nasties' - a 1980s proliferation of graphic horror movies flooding the new frontier of VHS home entertainment. Enid acts as a kind of moral guardian, exposing herself to these films so the wider public don't have to, but when one film unearths her past trauma, Enid begins a spiral that will lead her to some very real horror. We discuss a slightly muddled treatise on trauma and media influence, praise the immaculate vibes of 1980s film logos, question the security setup of low-budget film shoots and wonder whether stunt weapons are a necessity, or simply health and safety gone mad. All of which leads to one question: How would you survive? Whatever happens, one thing's for sure: Horror is already out there, in all of us. It's in you. Next time, we begin ‘Better Body Horror' season with Rose Glass' Love Lies Bleeding (2023).
You can't make this up. Wicked gets a trigger warning over racism against green-skinned people in the UK. And also being mean to talking animals, or something. The BBFC's trigger warning for "Wicked" due to racism against a green-skinned character has sparked massive overreaction and claims of "wokeness gone wrong". Some argue that trigger warnings are excessive and stifle creativity, while others view them as necessary for protecting vulnerable viewers. The controversy raises questions about whether the green-skinned character's treatment is a metaphor for racial discrimination or a misinterpretation of the story's themes. The debate highlights the challenges in balancing representation, sensitivity, and safety in entertainment, particularly regarding marginalized groups and sensitive topics. The situation questions the responsibility of film classification bodies like the BBFC in rating content and providing trigger warnings to protect audiences from potentially offending material.
Tobe Hooper's legendary low-budget horror film, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, first screened in Austin on 1st October, 1974. The movie was an international sensation - making £21.9 million from its £100,000 budget in its first year - although not in the UK, where it was not screened nationally for 25 years, due to the BBFC's concerns about its portrayal of suffering and violence against women. In this episode, The Retrospectors unpick the picture's gruesome reputation, given that much of the violence is suggested rather than explicitly shown; pore over the extreme conditions faced by the hitherto unknown cast during filming, including scorching Texas heat and foul-smelling props like rotting animal bones; and consider whether the piece can be considered a (very black) comedy… Further Reading: • ‘Tobe Hooper: the director who took a chainsaw to wholesome family life' (The Guardian, 2017): https://www.theguardian.com/film/2017/aug/27/tobe-hooper-appreciation-texas-chainsaw-massacre-american-family • ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre' (BBFC Education): https://www.bbfc.co.uk/education/case-studies/the-texas-chain-saw-massacre • ‘ The Texas Chainsaw Massacre - Original Trailer (Tobe Hooper, 1974): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BKn9QIaMgtQ This episode first premiered in 2023, for members of
Send us a textMark is joined by Film Stories' Mark Harrison to discuss the history of censorship and Doctor Who. From the Australian censor clips of the 1960s to the BBFC's rulings on the Ncuti Gatwa era, the two Marks unpick whether regulatory oversight and "censorship" have been good for Doctor Who.But don't worry, there are plenty of laughs along the way, including Ofcom's ruling on "insufficient underwear", why the Sacha Dhawan Master had a particularly awful Christmas Day, and which Ncuti Gatwa episode is officially more grisly than Attack of the Cyberman. You can read Mark D's WhoCulture piece on censorship here. You can listen to the BBFC's Doctor Who podcast here.Support the showFollow us on TwitterLike us on FacebookBuy us a pint

This month the Devils have been watching movies full of cackling witches, flying heads, magic spells and, erm, mayoral elections. It's a quintet of quite bizarre Indonesian horror movies from 1980-82, including Mystics in Bali and Queen of Black Magic. Along the way our discussion takes in surprising BBFC ratings, our Great Lord Willy Wasser, unnecessarily aggressive Carter USM fans, Yeti spaff, and the Mannequin Pis of Piss. And under the spotlight in this month's Horror Helpdesk segment: a question of continuity in the Alien franchise. It's another big hitter episode but not as we know it. Over the past year I have been putting this show together, knowing that time will be short for me come spooky season. So I compiled my favourite parts from the video nasty series of the top tier, successfully prosecuted films over on Patreon and have put them in order of my least favourite to the movie that I think is the best. All the nasties with a total of 19 guests, a silly amount of booze and the filthiest 39 movies that you ever would see.0.00 - Intro2.47 - Cannibal Ferox (w/ Graham Bywater)31.14 - Zombie Flesh Eaters aka Zombi aka Zombie 2 (w/ Graham Bywater)1.18.12 - The Last House on the Left (w/ Graham Bywater)2.08.53 - Cannibal Holocaust (w/ Graham Bywater)2.21.07 - OutroBetween the interview segments there are various clips from an incredibly important documentary which is actually an episode from the BBC series 'Open Space' in which the public made programmes under their own editorial control. It's an episode called 'Suitable for Viewing in the Home?' from 1984. This gives some detailed context to pretty much all the conversations for this episode.

As the British Board of Film Classification publishes its new guidelines, Ellen E Jones and Mark Kermode delve into the long, chequered history of film censorship and classification in the UK.Mark speaks to BBFC President (and original Strictly Come Dancing winner) Natasha Kaplinsky about her role, and about her reaction to the new guidelines. And he discusses the Board's controversial history, and some of its most notorious decisions, with ex-BBFC Head of Compliance Craig Lapper. Ellen talks to director Prano Bailey-Bond about her debut film Censor, which was inspired by the 'video nasty' moral panic of the 1980s. And pop culture critic Kayleigh Donaldson talks her through some of the differences between the BBFC and its US equivalent, the MPA Ratings Board. Comedian Henning Wehn discusses poll results and new BBFC ratings' feature in an exclusive podcast takeover episode.
This week's film features a group of women taking part in an activity known as "Spelunking", which is the act of exploring small (and often wet) holes. It has an all female cast and is rated a solid 18 by the BBFC. I can't help but feel that at least some people who read that description are going to be disappointed by the actual content of Neil Marshall's 2005 British horror classic The Descent, but for those of who can see past the equal parts clumsy and crass double entendres, you are in for an absolute treat. This is without a doubt one of the scariest films on the 100 Horrors list, and that's saying something given we don't even get a hint of an antagonist until nearly an hour into the film. This week's guest is Mr Kingsley Hall, so naturally its a long one! That's not a bad thing though, surely, is it!? Tune in to this episode of 100 Horrors to find out!
In the week leading up to Halloween, The Cinematologists Podcast returns live to The Garden Cinema for a screening and recording of Prano Baily-Bond's debut feature Censor. A pointed and knowing homage to the 80s era of the video nasties, the story draws on the theme of moral panic, with the excellent Niamh Elgar as an officious BBFC censor whose work starts to encroach a little too much into her own trauma. With perturbing visceral panache, the ritualistic nature of cinematic spectatorship and psychological effects of film living in the liminal space between reality and myth, underpin Censor's disquieting effects. It's a film that divided critics and audiences and provided plenty to chew on for host Dario Llinares who will be joined by Sarah Cleaver (Projections Podcast & The Zodiac Film Club) for post screening discussion. *Apologies for the poor quality of the live recorded sound on this episode. There was a technical fault and there was no much we could do in post-production to rectify the problem. Recommend that you use headphones for this one. In this episode, we speak to Col Needham, the CEO of IMDb, about the origins and evolution of the much-loved Internet Movie Database website, most commonly known as IMDb.
Django Nudo and the Smut Peddler are joined by academic Dr. Retro (OK, not his real name), who specialises in film history and is an expert on British cult films and more. The occasion is the 50th anniversary of the publication of the Longford Report on Pornography, an unlikely 520-page bestseller (no pictures) that argued for the banning of 'obscene' publications, films, plays and broadcasts, spearheaded by Frank Pakenham, aka the seventh Earl of Longford. The Swedish sex ed films "The Language of Love" (1969) and "More from the Language of Love" (1970) became test cases for what could and could not be shown in the UK. As one critic pointed out at the time, ‘Nobody makes a sex-education movie like the Swedes. And nobody – but nobody – will make such a supercilious fuss about it more than the British Establishment.' There was particular tension between the British Board of Film Classification/Censors (BBFC), which advised whether a film should get a rating, and the Greater London Council (GLC), which decided for itself as the final arbitrator as to whether to show a film or not in its cinemas - representing one in seven screens across the UK. Far from being censorship prone, the BBFC Secretary (i.e. Director) John Trevelyan and BBFC President Lord Harlech agreed that sex ed films should be accepted, even if they did not allow 'extravagant exploitation'. Trevelyan also engaged in exchanges with foreign distributors to try to understand the films and their social context better. The BBFC passed the buck to local councils as to whether approve "The Language of Love" (1969), which the GLC passed with an 'X' certificate, meaning only over-16s could see it. By 1971 127 local authorities out of 169 that the films was submitted to had approved. But there was trouble ahead, according to Dr Retro's study:"In July 1974 two plain-clothed policemen, Chief Inspector Smith and Police Sergeant Collins, entered the Jacey cinema on Charing Cross Road, where More About the Language of Love had already been playing to audiences five times a day for six weeks. According to Chief Inspector Smith's account, ‘The cinema has a seedy air entirely in keeping with its clientele and the films they come to watch.'"It is unusual to get a detailed. eyewitness report of cinema screenings and habits, but while historians can treasure this today, the result was that the film was accused of being 'criminally obscene'. It was the basis for the trial the following year, Regina v. Jacey (London) Ltd, Lionel Parsons and Fancey Associates Ltd, where the three charged was the Jacey Cinema, the programmer Fancey Associates and Lionel Parsons, the cinema manager. People were thus being prosecuted for screening a film that had been passed by the relevant authorities for public viewing. " If they were to be found guilty this case would have serious implications for the whole system of British film censorship.," Dr Retro notes the defence lawyer arguing. Shockingly, the Crown WON the case, meaning that anyone could be prosecuted on the basis of 'obscenity'. This is where Lord Longford's 'report', or rather moral crusade, plays such a significant role. We talk about the differences between Swedish and British censorship and the implications of the ruling. There is also sound clips from people on the streets (of Dublin) being interviewed about their views on pornography and a clip from the Festival of Light that demonstrated against pornography. We end with Cliff Richards, who marched against the "Language of Love" screenings under a banner proclaiming Sweden to be a hotbed of alcoholism, suicide, gonorrhoea, and pornography, b

James Cameron-Wilson looks at the UK box office, where Minions: The Rise of Gru enters at #1. Disliking it intensely and querying the BBFC's "U" certificate, he calls it "cultural rat poison". With Elvis, Top Gun and Jurassic World holding well, James turned to Netflix for filmic enlightenment. But he found the Kevin Hart/Woody Harrelson comedy The Man From Toronto dreadful and was even more dispirited by Norwegian sci-fi comedy Blasted. He only managed to cheer himself by watching Avatar ahead of this year's belated sequel, finding it vastly better than he remembered. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Xtro is a 1983 British science fiction horror film directed by Harry Bromley-Davenport. Starring Bernice Stegers, Philip Sayer, and Simon Nash, the film focuses on a father who was abducted by, what could be seen as aliens, and returns to his family three years later, where he goes in search of his son. Even though the plot involves extraterrestrials, the creatures in this film are at no point referred to as aliens. Some fans like thinking of them as Lovecraftian-type beings coming from another dimension. The film had a six week shooting schedule and was completed in February 1982. Chris Hobbs, a sketch artist helped finalise the visual concepts for the production, which originally involved a faceless rubber suit for a creature. This was changed to man standing with his back to the ground on his arms and legs. A mime was hired to perform the strange scuttle of the walk. When released on home video in 1983, the film was subject to a prosecution case in relation to British obscenity laws. Unlike many other "video nasties", as they were then called, Xtro had actually been passed uncut by the BBFC with an 18 certificate for theatrical release (with both the original and an alternate ending).Bromley-Davenport made two sequels to the film, Xtro II: The Second Encounter and Xtro 3: Watch the Skies. Neither film had anything to do with the original film. In March 2011, Davenport confirmed that Xtro 4 (The Big One) was in the works.Even though he has made many deviations from the exploitation field since Xtro, the stigma is still attached, as Bromley-Davenport himself admits that: "Getting a start in exploitation films, as I did, suddenly became unfashionable about 20 years ago, and such movies are now regarded as smut, despite the fact that they gave Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, Jim Cameron, Joe Dante, Jonathan Demme and countless others their first opportunities to direct a professional movie."$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$Just in case anyone has too much money and wants to give a bit to us to help with our hosting n stuff.
