Australia has been blessed with some of the greatest songwriters of all time. On their Mount Rushmore has to be Robert Forster and Grant McLennan of the Go-Betweens. What started out as spikey post-punk, eventually morphed into some of the most lush and perfect pop music ever made. If you don't believe me, listen to 1988's immaculate 16 Lovers Lane for proof. Not feeling they'd gained a big enough audience, the guys parted ways for a while until reforming in 2000 and keeping it going until Grant's death in 2006. Robert's solo work is also excellent and he's releasing a great new album, Strawberries, this week. We discuss how he writes such amazing story songs, his influences, the uniqoe story behind the new album and a ton more. He's one of the best there's ever been and we're lucky to have him. www.robertforster.net www.patreon.com/c/thehustlepod
"Strawberries" Perhaps best known as one of the co-founding members of the late great Australian band The Go-Betweens, singer/songwriter Robert Forster has been putting out critically acclaimed solo albums since his 1990 debut Danger In The Past. Over the years he added to his solo discography titles like Calling From A Country Phone and I Had A New York Girlfriend, and now the Brisbane-born Forster is checking in with his ninth solo effort Strawberries. The follow-up to 2023's rousing and affecting The Candle And The Flame, Strawberries is startlingly beautiful and emotionally precise. Produced by Peter Moren of Peter Bjorn and John, the eight numbers on Strawberries range from the jangling album opener "Tell It Back To Me" to the stirring blues of "Good To Cry." Elsewhere, the seven minute "Breakfast On The Train" is not only a great song, it also doubles as a great short story; the title track is a brilliant and simple study of the gobbling of strawberries as a metaphor for domestic bliss and the album closing "Diamonds" quite literally reaches new vocal heights for Mr. Forster. This is one of the best albums you'll hear--it's satisfyingly precise, unreasonably melodic and filled with observational wisdom, meditative self-analysis and quietly unforgettable character studies. This is a great chat--I love talking to Robert and I hope you dig listening. www.robertforster.net (http://www.robertforster.net) www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) www.bombshellradio.com (http://www.bombshellradio.com) Stereo Embers Bluesky + IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com (mailto:editor@stereoembersmagazine.com)

The new Snow White movie is awful for many reasons but the choice to use CGI dwarves is the worst. Jay remembers the Chuck Norris film "The Delta Force" where the Arabic terrorist was just a poorly spray-tanned Robert Forster. Everyone has a good laugh at the ridiculous ending of the movie. Bob and Jay debate about their Farrah Abraham interview. They conduct an investigation as to whether her turd hit the floor or the toilet in her scat video. The crew gangs up against Jay because he denies that he's an expert in poop porn. Adapted from Elmore Leonard's novel Rum Punch, this crime thriller showcases Tarantino's signature style but with a more mature and restrained approach compared to Pulp Fiction or Reservoir Dogs.Setting the Scene: A Game of SurvivalPam Grier stars as Jackie Brown, a flight attendant caught smuggling money for arms dealer Ordell Robbie (Samuel L. Jackson). When she's busted by the ATF, she finds herself caught between law enforcement and Ordell, who won't hesitate to eliminate loose ends. With the help of bail bondsman Max Cherry (Robert Forster), Jackie hatches a plan to outmanoeuvre both sides and secure her own future. Why It Stands OutPam Grier's Iconic Performance – A true 70s blaxploitation star, Grier delivers a powerhouse performance that cements Jackie Brown as one of Tarantino's best-written characters.Samuel L. Jackson as Ordell Robbie – Charismatic, chilling, and endlessly quotable, Jackson's villain is both funny and terrifying.Robert Forster's Career Revival – As the world-weary Max Cherry, Forster brings a grounded, heartfelt presence that earned him an Oscar nomination.A Different Tarantino – While still packed with sharp dialogue and memorable characters, Jackie Brown leans more into slow-burn tension and character depth rather than hyper-stylized violence.Elmore Leonard's Influence – The film stays true to the novel's sharp plotting and richly drawn characters, making for a crime thriller with real emotional weight.Themes: Trust, Betrayal, and Second ChancesUnlike Tarantino's usual revenge-driven stories, Jackie Brown is about survival and reinvention. Jackie isn't looking for payback—she's trying to carve out a better life for herself in a world stacked against her. The film explores aging, regret, and loyalty, particularly in Jackie's dynamic with Max Cherry, whose quiet admiration adds an unexpected layer of romance.A Dad's TakeJackie Brown is a must-watch for fans of Tarantino, crime thrillers, and smartly written characters. While it may not have the explosive action of his other films, it offers something even better—a masterfully crafted, character-driven story with a killer soundtrack and one of the coolest leading ladies in cinema. So, grab a beer, settle in, and join us as we unpack one of Tarantino's finest films on Bad Dads Film Review!

Sounds! Artist. Poet. Friend. This week, we celebrate the music, life, and legacy of Leonard Cohen with someone who knew him well - Perla Batalla. Grammy-nominated Singer/songwriter Perla Batalla first came to prominence as a backing singer for Leonard Cohen during his 1988 I'm Your Man tour and on the 1992 album The Future, in the process forging a deep friendship. With Cohen's encouragement, Perla stepped out as an artist in her own right, releasing a beautifully diverse range of magnificent albums such as Mestiza and Discoteca Batalla, performing at the world's best venues, co-writing and appearing in two one-woman shows, honored by UN and Focus on the Masters. But she has always kept the words and works of Leonard Cohen close to her heart. Her latest album, A Letter to Leonard Cohen: Tribute to a Friend, is her second album of her unique interpretations of Cohen's music, following 2005's Bird on the Wire. It was released the day before what would have been his 90th birthday. Leonard Norman Cohen was born in Quebec on September 21, 1934. Spending the latter part of the ‘50s and first half of the ‘60s as a published poet and author, he shifted his focus to songwriting. From 1967 to 1971, he established himself as a major musical talent with the trilogy of classic albums Songs of Leonard Cohen, Songs from a Room, and Songs of Love and Hate, as well as interpretations by the likes of Judy Collins, Nina Simone, Joe Cocker, and Roberta Flack. He would continue to record and tour sporadically throughout the ‘70s and early ‘80s to widespread acclaim and with some commercial success in Europe. In the late ‘80s & early ‘90s, Cohen gained a new underground audience through his two synth-driven productions, I'm Your Man and The Future, prominent soundtrack placements, a beloved album of interpretations by Jennifer Warnes, Famous Blue Raincoat, and the 1991 high profile tribute album, I'm Your Fan, where a who's who of alternative music disciples like REM, Ian McCulloch, Pixies, James, The House of Love, Robert Forster, Nick Cave, and John Cale paid their respects to the man. The latter artist, John Cale, performed a breathtaking piano version of a song from 1984's Various Positions called “Hallelujah,” in an arrangement that would be borrowed and transcribed to guitar by Jeff Buckley a few years later, which further elevated Leonard Cohen's already mythical status. After spending the latter half of the ‘90s in a monastery as an ordained Buddhist monk, Leonard Cohen returned in the twenty first century to finish what he started, adding six additional studio albums to his catalogue, including the album released weeks before his November 7, 2016 death, You Want It Darker, and the posthumous followup completed by his son Adam, 2019's Thanks For The Dance, as well as multiple live albums, both archival and contemporary. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Hal Ackerman is making his second appearance on StoryBeat. Hal spent thirty years teaching screenwriting in UCLA's legendary screenwriting program. Along with Richard Walter and Lew Hunter, Hal helped launch the careers of many dozens of writers whose work you've seen on screens large and small. Hal has sold film and television material to all the outlets. His screenplay Holmeyer's Bridge, holds the unofficial Guinness record for having been continuously optioned for twenty consecutive years, owned during that stretch by two Academy Award winning producers, two Tony Award winning producers and others. His short fiction has appeared in numerous literary journals. “Sweet Day” was recorded by the late Robert Forster. Concrete Charley and The Golden Boy won the 2020 Sports Literate Sport Short contest.Hal's written three “Soft boiled” murder mystery novels about an aging counter-culture P.I. named Harry Stein. The first of those, Stein Stung, won a Lovey award for best first novel. Subsequently, he published Stein Stoned and more recently, Smoke and Lather. I thoroughly enjoyed reading all three Stein books and can tell you Hal delivers a unique take on the detective genre. Funny while being dramatic, Hal's writing is cleverly brilliant and brilliantly clever. I highly recommend all three Harry Stein books to you.Hal's also known for publishing the highly informative and truly useful book, Write Screenplays that Sell: The Ackerman Way. If you want insight from one of the foremost screenwriting teachers of the last half century, make a point to check it out. Hal's One-Man play, Testosterone: How Prostate Cancer Made a Man of Me (renamed Prick) won the William Saroyan award for drama and was named Best Play at the 2012 New York Solo Festival. In the interest of full disclosure, I'm proud to say I was fortunate to have been one of Hal's many students while I was attending UCLA's Graduate Screenwriting program. www.halackermanwriting.com CreativeLive.com
On January 15, the entertainment world lost a truly unique and highly influential talent….David Lynch (Blue Velvet, The Elephant Man, Twin Peaks) who passed away at the age of 78 from emphysema. Over his illustrious career, he directed twelve feature films and was nominated for four Oscars including Best Director for this acclaimed classic released in the fall of 2001. Considered by many fans and critics to be Lynch's best film, this mind-bending mystery has since garnered a devoted following from cinephiles who have enjoyed developing and sharing theories regarding its complex plot. The overall story mainly focuses on two women, one an amnesiac nick-named Rita (Laura Harring) and the other an aspiring actress named Betty (Naomi Watts) who is new to town. The town is Hollywood, where dreams of fame and fortune sometimes come true....though more often they lead to bad things. :o And as these two ladies develop a relationship.....well as most other Lynch stories go, let's just say that they get pretty strange. Also included among the stellar cast are Justin Theroux, Jeanne Bates, Robert Forster, Brent Briscoe, Patrick Fischler, Dan Hedaya, and Billy Ray Cyrus. (Yes you read that right.) Rest in Peace Mr. Lynch….your legacy will live on WELL beyond your time on this earth. TVC 674.1: TV Confidential remembers Michael Schlesinger, the film executive and champion of classic movie restoration who was also the writer, producer, and director of The Misadventures of Biffle and Shooster, a collection of 1930s-style comedies—all starring Will Ryan and Nick Santa Maria—that pay homage to The Three Stooges, Abbott and Costello, Laurel and Hardy, and other vintage comedy teams from the Golden Era of Hollywood. Though filmed circa 2013, the sets, camera shots, attention to detail, and, above all, the performances of everyone involved in the Biffle and Shooster films are all so convincing, they look and sound as if they really were unearthed from the 1930s. Michael Schlesinger passed away Thursday, Jan. 9 at age seventy-four. In this segment, which originally aired in August 2018, Mike and Will join Ed and Greg Ehrbar for a conversation about the origin of the Biffle and Shooster characters (and how Mike came to be involved with them); the painstaking dedication to authenticity that Mike took to making the Biffle and Shooster shorts; and how Mike parlayed his friendships with such stars as Robert Forster, H.M. Wynant, and Robert Picardo into getting each of them to appear in the films.

Madeline, Julian, and Emilio welcome NYC-based comedian, writer, and actress Sydney Duncan to continue their "Politics" episode cycle with a "Two-Shot" discussion on 1969's "Medium Cool" (dir. Haskell Wexler) and 1975's "Shampoo" (dir. Hal Ashby). Though differing on surface level, the two films bear striking similarities in their portrayals of apathy to politics in the face of the 1968 presidential election, focusing on egotistical male protagonists more invested in their jobs and tumultuous love lives than the far-reaching events occurring around them. The group begins by discussing the ingenious commentary that "Medium Cool" offers on media and class, with its Chicago-set blend of fiction and documentary and fortuitous backdrop of the 1968 Democratic National Convention. Shifting gears to "Shampoo," they then discuss that film's seeming juxtaposition of its characters' sexual promiscuity and their political context over roughly thirty-six hours in Los Angeles during the aforementioned election, along with the film's status as a self-ordained vehicle for star/co-writer/co-producer Warren Beatty. Aided by numerous piercing insights from Sydney and loads of fun trivia and personal stories, the group dives deep into these oddly similar films while finding many notable zeitgeist connections (in film and otherwise) along the way. The gang dives head first into one of Heather's favorite genres this week: Gerard Butler Trash Action... as they review the movie that spawned the Has Fallen Cinematic Universe, Olympus Has Fallen. While admittedly being a cheesy pie action movie, this non-stop action explosion of a movie was also directed by Antoine Fuqua, so you know it's gonna have some style that AVOD movies from today just don't have. Gerard Butler, Morgan Freeman, Aaron Eckart, Angela Bassett, Robert Forster, and Ashley Judd all do their part to make this popcorn flick the best DVD in the Walmart DVD bin. Degenerates Andy S and Brandon Bombay discuss a Quentin Tarantino classic that often gets overlooked in his filmography — 'Jackie Brown.' The action gets rolling with Bombay telling a story about a very drunk friend who rode in the back of a truck, and saw a prank hilariously backfire. Then the fellas examine Tarantino's follow up to 'Pulp Fiction,' a breezy slow moving hang out movie with a heist at the center of the narrative that seems tertiary. A movie filled with bumbling characters who made being screw ups their life's work. There's memorable turns from Samuel L. Jackson, Robert De Niro, and Bridget Fonda, but it was the casting of the titular Pam Grier, and genre legend Robert Forster that pulled the movie together. 'Jackie Brown,' when you absolutely, positively got to entertain every motherf***er in the room, accept no substitutes.
