Paul Verhoeven is officially a Born to Watch legend, but this week the boys go deep into his most infamous film to find out if Showgirls (1995) deserves a spot at the top of the Rank Bank or belongs buried under a mountain of glitter and regret. The Showgirls (1995) Review will be a lot of fun. From the moment Nomi Malone hitchhikes into Las Vegas with dreams of stardom and a suitcase full of questionable choices, Verhoeven's neon-soaked disaster invites every kind of reaction. Whitey, G-Man and Damo rip through the plot with their trademark mix of outrage and disbelief, tackling everything from Elizabeth Berkeley's career-ending performance to Kyle MacLachlan's slippery pool scene that's become cinematic legend for all the wrong reasons. Was Showgirls ever meant to be serious? Could it have worked as a satire? The crew debates whether Verhoeven's direction and Joe Eszterhas's ludicrous script are misunderstood genius or just cinematic malpractice. Damo argues that it's a "full mind-body spiritual experience," while Whitey insists it's “a masterpiece of shit." G-Man tries to stay objective, but even he can't defend dialogue this wooden or acting this drenched in baby oil.The team delves into the film's troubled production history, including Berkeley's disastrous fallout from Saved by the Bell, Verhoeven's later confession that he pushed her into cartoonish exaggeration, and Kyle MacLachlan's stunned reaction at the premiere: "I was absolutely gobsmacked." They explore how Showgirls was panned on release, only to rise again as a cult classic, the sort of “so-bad-it's-good” masterpiece that packs midnight screenings and inspires drag-queen tributes around the world. No Born to Watch review would be complete without the Snorbs Report, and this week it's a full-length epic. From the film's Razzie nominations to its $100 million home-video redemption, the boys chronicle how Showgirls became both an artistic failure and a commercial success. There's trivia about its banned trailer, its notorious NC-17 rating, and Verhoeven's history of pushing boundaries, from Basic Instinct to Starship Troopers. In true Born to Watch fashion, the lads discover a few accidental highlights: Gina Gershon's camp brilliance, the hilariously terrible fight choreography, and Robert Davi's unforgettable line delivery that cements his place in movie-villain history. They even crown Showgirls the global champion of "wank-per-capita cinema", a category no one asked for but everyone understands.By the end, they decide Showgirls is a film that must be seen to be believed. It's equal parts erotic thriller, unintentional comedy, and cautionary tale about a tragic career. Whether you love it, hate it, or just can't look away, Showgirls remains a cinematic experience unlike anything else.JOIN THE CONVERSATIONWas Showgirls a misunderstood genius or glorious trash? Is Nomi Malone the most unlikeable lead in movie history? It's September, and to celebrate the fall season, we are doing a month of David Lynch movies. Julian, Madeline, and Emilio begin a new episode cycle focusing on Audience Interrogation in film with a "View-nanimous" discussion on David Lynch's 1986 masterpiece "Blue Velvet," and are joined by returning guest, multi-talented musician and fellow Lynch fan Lily Desmond for the conversation. Marking their long-awaited first episode on a Lynch film, the group discuss their formative past experiences with "Blue Velvet" and its undeniable staying power, on account of its simultaneous adherence to and divergence from narrative conventions. As the film famously polarized critics upon release, the group also discuss the surprising watchability of its most unsettling scenes, along with distinctly "American" sensibilities tapped into by Lynch and other offbeat filmmakers of his generation, and the desires which underly the dually transparent and enigmatic actions of the film's main characters, Jeffrey, Dorothy, Frank, and Sandy. Samantha Sloyan is a familar face from countless television shows, but that face will be particularly familiar to anyone who keeps up with the "Flanaverse" -- movies and shows from Mike Flanagan, like Midnight Mass, The Fall of the House of Usher, and The Haunting of Hill House. Sloyan's latest project is a departure for Flanagan, and perhaps for her as well -- it's the new movie The Life of Chuck, which hits theaters this weekend and expands next week. Together, she and huge fan Jordan discuss the ways that she feels seen by FBI Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachan) in David Lynch's Twin Peaks, and the many ways that Lynch's storytelling style appeals to her craft as an actor. Then, Jordan has one quick thing that doesn't stray too far from the main topic...it's about the casting of Flanagan's new Carrie adaptation.***With Jordan Crucchiola & Samantha Sloyan Feeling Seen is hosted by Jordan Crucchiola and is a production Maximum Fun.Need more Feeling Seen? But let's not limit Kyle to the world of Twin Peaks, for he has been on screens big and small and stage too fo decades, and there will be so many stops along the way where you will have come into contact with his unique work. Kyle is someone who we are so fortune to have with us and even hearing Brett give him his flowers on this episode is just such a joy. I'm sure we all vicariously do the same in listening. This episode was recorded about a year before the death of David Lynch, a celebrated and treasured film maker who truly left a legacy of classic, undeniable and groundbreaking films and television. You'll likely be aware of how much Kyle worked with David, and have seen the results yourself. You can hear how much love and respect there is for David in this podcast, from both Kyle and Brett, and this episode is dedicated to David's memory and legacy. Rest in peace, David Lynch. This week we dive into David Lynch's most fleshed out universe, that of Twin Peaks. We discuss the cancellation of the television show that led to the making of this film. We also discuss the icy reception the film received at Cannes and the US. We, then, try our best to interpret the plot and themes, and finish the episode with a couple of double bills for your viewing pleasure. Thank you so much for listening!Created by Spike Alkire & Jake KelleyTheme Song by Breck McGoughFollow us on Instagram: @DoubleBillChillLetterboxd: FartsDomino44
Brian is dedicated to turning Steve into a Jack Sholder fan. First it was Renegades. Then he didn't hate Freddy's Revenge as much. And now he's trying to get Steve to love Kyle MacLachlan's first turn as an FBI agent. But before he chased the embodiment of evil in Twin Peaks, he chased a giant space slug beetle in LA. Part buddy cop. Part horror thriller. All fueled by yayo. Plus we talk Dune, Men In Black plagiarism, and announce our June Showdown Topic. Note to our listeners: This episode was recorded back in December 2024, before David Lynch's passing in January. RIP David Lynch, maybe one day the GBGBs can honor your work by reviewing some of your other buck-wild amazing films. This week the GBGBs review DUNE (the version from 1984). The first DUNE, before the pretty solid 2000 made-for-TV DUNE, before the excellent Denis Villeneuve DUNES, and before the ill-advised HBO series DUNE: Prophecy. This movie introduced mainstream audiences to Kyle Maclachlan and Patrick Stewart and had to break a lot of ground quickly for the sci-fi epic genre. In addition to sandworms, this movie had the distinct advantage of including inner-monologues, heart-plugs, cat milking machines, rat capri-suns, and a soundtrack by Toto. The GBGBs discuss if this movie was too harshly judged in its time and if it's worth the journey for modern DUNE fans. Thanks for stopping by!
Actor Kyle MacLachlan didn't just want to slap his name on a bottle of wine, the quality is the most important thing to him. He and his partner/winemaker, Dan Wampfler, join this week's Podcast to discuss their Washington winery, Pursued By Bear, and what makes it and their chemistry so special. This week we continue our discussion of David Lynch by exploring the strange world of Blue Velvet (1986). The film contrasts the happy-go-lucky and relatively ordinary world of Lumbertown USA with the seedy underbelly brewing underneath its surface. Kyle MacLachlan plays Jeffrey Beaumont, a young man whose curiosity leads to disturbing revelations, only to be thrust right into the middle of the mystery he's investigating. We got lost in Cleveland's Masonic Temple, but thankfully we were found by a potato-touting Kyle MacLachlan, who guided us through winding corridors of ambiguously abandoned bookshelves and designer headstones, and gifted us a cabinet full of mugs with people's faces on them.
