Jim Carrey gave critics a new view into his talents in the Peter Weir hit, The Truman Show. Back in 1998, the psychological comedy-drama captivated audiences with its unique premise: a reality TV world that “is not fake but controlled.” Yes, we followed dear Truman as he was hoodwinked daily by everyone in his life, all for the sake of ratings. But now, decades of reality TV concepts later, is the movie interesting enough to hold up to today's outrageous standards? Did Meryl and Marlon really kiss their real lives goodbye to live a lie? And why is Christof (Ed Harris) the worst? The Old Roommates set sail for answers and discuss it all through their middle-aged lens. Join them, with no commercial interruptions!Old Roommates can be reached via email at oldroommatespod@gmail.com. Kenny Robinson is a Canadian comedy legend, actor, writer, and unapologetic truth-teller. In this conversation, David Peck talks with him about his new film The People of Comedy, now streaming on Crave. We explore the intersections of race, identity, and humour in Canada. We talk about comedy as protest, the power of laughter, and why Kenny has never shied away from speaking his mind. From growing up in Winnipeg to founding the iconic “Nubian Disciples of Pryor,” Kenny shares stories that are raw, real, and deeply relevant. This is a bold and brilliant take on what it means to be funny—and fearless.Synopsis:People of Comedy: Celebrating 30 Years of The Nubian Show is a powerful documentary from Counterfeit Pictures marking the anniversary of Kenny Robinson's groundbreaking comedy showcase. Launched in 1995 at Toronto's Yuk Yuk's, the Nubian Show became a vital platform for Black and Racialized comedians to share their stories and challenge the industry status quo. Blending stand-up, interviews, and behind-the-scenes footage, the film highlights the showcase's cultural impact and career-launching legacy, featuring appearances from Russell Peters, Hassan Phills, Crystal Ferrier, and more. A tribute to Robinson's bold vision and the enduring power of comedy as representation and resistance.Bio: The Fabulous Kenny Robinson is a living legend on the Canadian Comedy scene. In this episode of Comic Stripped, Evan Bevins and Mark Radulich take a deep dive into A History of Violence, comparing the 1997 graphic novel written by John Wagner (Judge Dredd) and illustrated by Vince Locke (Deadworld), with the 2005 film adaptation directed by David Cronenberg. Originally published by Paradox Press, an imprint of DC Comics, the graphic novel is a gritty, pulp-inspired crime thriller following Tom McKenna, a small-town diner owner whose violent past resurfaces after he thwarts a robbery and is outed as a former mob hitman. Wagner and Locke craft a tense, noir narrative grounded in bloody realism and identity crisis. The film adaptation stars Viggo Mortensen as Tom Stall, with Maria Bello, Ed Harris, and William Hurt rounding out a powerhouse cast. Screenwriter Josh Olson reworks the core premise, shifting the story's focus from pulpy crime fiction to psychological drama. Cronenberg transforms Wagner's narrative into a meditation on suppressed violence and the duality of human nature, anchored by Mortensen's haunting performance. The panel discusses how Cronenberg stripped down the original's mob-heavy plotting to explore more intimate moral dilemmas — particularly the effect of Tom's hidden past on his family and his sense of self.Evan and Mark also examine how both versions tackle themes of redemption, guilt, and identity, as well as the differing narrative choices — from Locke's visceral, sketchy art style to Cronenberg's cold, calculated visuals. They consider the cultural contexts of both releases, the adaptation's critical acclaim (including Academy Award nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor for William Hurt), and whether either version offers a more definitive take on the cost of violence. Tune in for an in-depth comic-to-screen breakdown with sharp analysis, biting humor, and a respect for storytelling craft across mediums.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

“The future is coming, and you're not in it.” That's what Rear Admiral Chester Cain (played by Ed Harris) says to Captain Pete Mitchell (played by Tom Cruise) in Top Gun: Maverick. Cain's reasoning? Mitchell will be replaced by AI. “These planes you've been testing, Captain, one day, sooner or later, they won't need pilots at all.” Technological advances initiate a process of creative destruction, in which old ways of doing things give way to new ways, in the process displacing people who do things the old way. The Luddites, for example, were weavers whose livelihoods were threatened by the adoption of automated weaving machines. The concern with AI is not merely that it will replace people's jobs, but that it will fundamentally redefine what it means to be human. How should pastors respond to this concern? Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

James Cameron takes us two miles under the sea for an intense, visually stunning, and sometimes completely ridiculous deep-sea adventure in The Abyss (1989). This sci-fi classic introduces us to oil-rig roughnecks, paranoid Navy SEALs, and aliens who can manipulate water—but not basic human communication. In this episode, Gene Lyons and Big D dive deep into The Abyss' groundbreaking special effects, the film's unrelenting tension, and Cameron's signature mix of brilliance and insanity. Gene wrestles with his newfound fear of liquid breathing, while Big D wonders how Ed Harris survived a death-defying swim in nothing but a t-shirt. Plus, the hosts debate why James Cameron insists on writing dialogue for blue-collar workers when he's clearly never met one. From nuclear warheads at the bottom of the ocean to CPR-by-slap techniques, The Abyss is a movie that demands discussion. Is it a masterpiece, a mess, or both? Join us as we explore the depths of one of Cameron's most ambitious projects. Plot Summary:  When a U.S. nuclear submarine mysteriously sinks in the Caribbean, a team of deep-sea oil drillers led by Virgil "Bud" Brigman (Ed Harris) is recruited to assist a group of Navy SEALs in the recovery mission. As tensions rise between the rig crew and the increasingly unstable SEAL leader, Lt. Hiram Coffey (Michael Biehn), the team discovers they are not alone in the ocean's depths. Dr. Lindsey Brigman (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio), the rig's designer and Bud's estranged wife, encounters an advanced, non-terrestrial intelligence (NTI) living beneath the waves. Meanwhile, Coffey, suffering from high-pressure nervous syndrome, sets a nuclear warhead to destroy the unknown beings, forcing Bud to embark on a desperate deep-sea dive to disarm it. Battling crushing pressure, limited oxygen, and human paranoia, Bud reaches the warhead, only to face what seems like certain death—until the NTIs intervene. In a breathtaking climax, the aliens reveal themselves, raising their colossal ship to the ocean's surface and leaving humanity with a powerful message of peace. With stunning underwater cinematography, groundbreaking visual effects, and an intense mix of sci-fi, thriller, and adventure, The Abyss remains one of James Cameron's most ambitious and visually spectacular films. It's a fun episode of BEHIND THE LENS as writer/director TIFFANY KIM STEVENS joins me in discussing her new quirky comedy TRIGGER HAPPY, plus my exclusive interview with director DITO MONTIEL talking about his latest dysfunctional family comedy RIFF RAFF. First up is my exclusive interview with director DITO MONTIEL talking the brilliantly conceived RIFF RAFF. Boasting an A-list cast led by Jennifer Coolidge and Ed Harris, along with Gabrielle Union, Lewis Pullman, Miles J. Harvey, with Pete Davidson and Bill Murray, RIFF RAFF is laugh-out-loud chaos with a wife, an ex-wife, a disowned son with a pregnant girlfriend, an innocent teen on the cusp of college, and a couple of gangsters named Leftie and Lonnie coming for them all. Needless to say, Leftie and Lonnie are played by Murray and Davidson, respectively. Listen as we break down the film and Dito's creative process covering everything from casting and character development to storyboards to cinematography to editing, as well as the film's kinetic energy and strong ensemble performances. Then I'm joined by writer/director TIFFANY KIM STEVENS talking about her outrageously fun and quirky comedic TRIGGER HAPPY; the tale of poor George Decker who dreams of escaping his boring and humdrum life and escaping to the Bahamas. But to do so means getting rid of his wife, crushing debt, his 9-to-6 job, and everything else that he believes has held him back and prevented his true bliss. A clever story that melds decades to create a timeless feel, Tiffany and I discuss character, story, production design, color palette, editing, and more. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

On streaming, Andy really enjoyed “House of David" on Amazon Prime Video. It was a pleasant surprise in that it is faithful to the source material while still managing to tell a dramatic story that doesn't go over the top. Netlfix has a new comedy series by Mindy Kaling called “Running Point" that also has some funny moments but is much more a family dramedy than a sports comedy. Top Gun: Maverick (2022) is a sequel to the 1986 Tony Scott action film Top Gun. Reprising their original roles are Tom Cruise as Pete ‘Maverick' Mitchell and Val Kilmer as Iceman. It also stars Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro, Lewis Pullman and Ed Harris. Maverick is forced to face his past when he is tasked with training a group of new recruits on a complex mission. Initially the new recruits are skeptical of Maverick and despite their best efforts can't beat him. Top Gun: Maverick might tone down the homoeroticism of the original but dials up the SFX. Radio is a powerful example of why being different doesn't mean being wrong—and how society often struggles with that distinction. Based on a true story, the film follows the relationship between high school football coach Harold Jones (played by Ed Harris) and a young man with an intellectual disability, James Robert “Radio” Kennedy (played by Cuba Gooding Jr.). Initially an outcast in the community, Radio is taken under Coach Jones's wing, gradually becoming a beloved figure at the school. The film ultimately teaches that just because someone doesn't fit traditional expectations doesn't mean they're wrong or less than. True strength lies in compassion, and real leadership is about lifting others up rather than shutting them out. Radio encourages us to rethink our biases and embrace people for who they are, not just for how they compare to societal norms.   Takeaways: Education should be student focussed Everyone should have a chance to learn One person can change a community     About Meredith Watassek: Meredith Watassek joined Stantec as an Education Planner after more than 24 years in Education. The last nine years of her career as an educator, she served as Director of Career and Technical Education (CTE) for the sixth largest school district in Texas. Meredith has guided dozens of Stantec clients through the engagement process on projects while simultaneously leading planning and specifications development for future academic spaces. Several of her most recent projects include School Master Planning for Alvin Community College, visioning and design of the Career and Technical Education Center for Lamar CISD, and School Master Planning and Specifications for Salteaux First Nations in Saskatchewan, Canada. Before joining Stantec, Meredith oversaw Stantec's design and execution of the James Reese Career and Technical Education Center for Fort Bend Independent School District in Sugar Land, TX, defining program and project scope for the new facility. With a rich background in CTE, Meredith can communicate with educators in a way that architects cannot; because she's been in their shoes, at the front of a classroom, managing both success factors and the student experience. She believes that learning environments shape a student's experience, even if just passively. It is inside schools that students develop beliefs about their ability to be successful. For this reason, Meredith maintains that designers, planners, architects, and contractors have a responsibility to provide the most nurturing environment possible for students.     Connect with Meredith Watassek: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/watassek-meredith-a561b23a/ Twitter: https://x.com/MWatassek   Connect with co-host, Carla Cummins: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/carla-cummins-01449659/   Connect with host, Kevin Stoller: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kevinstoller/     Episode 219 of the Better Learning Podcast Kevin Stoller is the host of the Better Learning Podcast and Co-Founder of Kay-Twelve, a national leader for educational furniture.  The Oddjob Pod returns with another edition of the Action Movie Landfill. On each episode of the Landfil, Gary, Graham and Terry fish out a DVD from the vast, imaginary pile of action movies from the sell-thriugh era and decide of they shoud be placed on the shelf or returned to the Landfill. In this edition we have unearthed Michael Bay's The Rock starring Ed Harris, Nicholas Cage and Sean Connery. Many Bond fans have looked at Connery's character, John Mason; a retired SAS officer incarcertaed in the US for 30 years and wonder if this Mason is an alternative unuverse James Bond. The film makers have been at pains to deny this.In any event it is a film with much to admire and the Oddjob Pod trio spend a happy hour and a half ruminating on this 90s classic.Download the podcast here or listen on the player below. Another blockbuster action flick from Michael Bay, and probably his most excellent movie!  A disgruntled General and some Marines hold a bunch of tourists hostage on Alcatraz island (conveniently, the place is full of rusty but working jail cells!) and it's up to "chemical superfreak" Nicolas Cage and former "British Sheecret Shervish" agent Sean Connery to bust them loose and stop Ed Harris and his brigade from launching these deadly green balls of toxic chemical gas at the innocent citizens of San Francisco!  Those poor people have it bad enough having to go up and down 45-degree angle tilted streets every day, don't they?  We've got car chases, demolition, hand-to-hand combat, lots of things blowing up, and even some excellent performances (I was gonna say "acting", but you know...Cage is doing his over-the-top Cagey stuff...not sure if there's an Oscar category for Best Batshit Rant from a Lead Actor...).  Plain and simple, action and entertainment up the wazoo!  Welcome to The Rock!  You're in, mate!

Mark Clavey sent this picture right after St Patrick's Day 2024: “Hi Marc! Here's our write - up for how we spent St Pat's at O'Malley's Pub... and a few pictures... "There was more March Madness for the band this past Sunday as we celebrated the Day of the Festival of St Patrick with a noon - performance at O'Malley's Pub(Episode 136). The day started around 10:00a as the band started straggling in and setting up. It was a brisk 40° when we loaded in, and would reach a balmy 48° when we loaded out at 4:30. Early - birds had already formed a line by 10:30 – despite the fact that the Pub wouldn't open until 11:30. (This plan was well - advised given the epic proportions of Snake Saturday's one - person - out/one - person - in crowd.) By the time the band started playing at noon, the bar was full and the crowd lively – being more vocal for the sing - alongs than they were for the toasts. There was a larger - than - usual number of Tullamore - fans than is typical for St Patrick's Day (as it was at lunchtime on a Sunday rather than a workday). Shout - outs to Mike, Amy, Anna, and Jason; Ray and Carrie; Eric and Dena; Eric, Linda, and Eleanor; Trey; Connie, Brandie and Rhonda; Shannon; Rob and Mitch; Andrew; Lisa, Craig, Ed, and Mary; Mikayla; and Jenn. Mark successfully navigated the afternoon notwithstanding the return of his chest - supercold (that knocked him out of the February weekend) and having sliced up the index - finger on his strumming hand. (Evidently, while holding a pick between the thumb and the bird - finger is a doable thing, it DOES produce a Charlie - horse at the base of the thumb when you do it for three hours straight.) Said navigation was aided with the Black Bush providing the kind of lubrication that makes your engine tick. We played until 3:30 before turning the stage over to The Kelihans – who would, in turn, hand off the stage to Chance the Arm at 8:00p. In the meantime, Ryan Rancudo and Bob Reeder handled the St Patrick's Day festivities for the audience in the upper cellar. Overall, it was a great afternoon and (we're assuming) a great night as well. (Photos courtesy of Amy Cripe, Mike Moran, and Mary Hanover.)" Best, - Mark”
