In this episode, I chat with creature effects artist, puppeteer and digital pioneer Craig Caton-Largent about a career that arguably traces the entire arc of modern visual effects — from foam latex and animatronics to motion control, performance capture and full CG animation. Craig talks about growing up on a sheep and cattle ranch in Washington State, being captivated by the 1960s Batman TV show and then Planet of the Apes, and teaching himself prosthetics from Dick Smith's Monster Makeup Handbook. After tracking down Dick Smith's address in Who's Who in America, he wrote a letter that led to a year of mentorship over cassette tapes and ultimately introductions to Rick Baker, Stan Winston and Tom Burman. We get into his first job on Charles Band's Metal Storm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn, working on the Olympic alien for the 1984 closing ceremonies, sculpting barnacles on Cocoon, building Spock's seamless silicone ears on Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, undulating menacingly under shaving cream on Larry Cohen's The Stuff, and puppeteering Slimer's mouth on the original Ghostbusters. A big part of the conversation focuses on Jurassic Park, including the design evolution of the T-Rex, the helicopter convention moment that led to the McFadden motion base, the logistics of moving the full-size animatronic across the San Fernando Valley at night, and Craig's work as the Raptor puppeteer, including the now-legendary "head tilt" at the kitchen window that earned an on-set "It's like Alien, I love it" from Spielberg. We also talk about Craig's twenty-year stint as the caretaker, or "doctor", to the original ET puppet, including the time the LAPD turned up at his garage door thinking he was running a crack lab while he was actually repainting ET. Plus the story of how Stan Winston handing him a couple of SGI machines led, almost overnight, to him becoming one of the eight co-founders of Digital Domain alongside James Cameron and Scott Ross. Later in the conversation we move into Craig's animation career as a final layout artist and character TD at DreamWorks and Disney, with credits on Tangled, Rise of the Guardians, How to Train Your Dragon 2 and Turbo, and stories from working with Guillermo del Toro at DreamWorks. We finish on Craig's current role as Creative Director of the 3D Animation and Visual Effects department at the New York Film Academy in Burbank. Text Dr. Lenz any feedback or questions Internal Tremors and Fibromyalgia: The Science Behind Invisible VibrationsThe script explains internal tremors (internal vibrations) as a subjective sensation of shaking or buzzing inside the body with little to no visible movement, often felt at rest and sometimes alongside fasciculations, myoclonic jerks, restless leg syndrome, or periodic limb movement disorder. It addresses fear of serious neurologic disease and emphasizes seeing a doctor to rule out causes like thyroid issues, Parkinson's, multiple sclerosis, and ALS, while noting these often present differently with visible tremors. The video links internal tremors to central sensitization and altered interoception, describing fibromyalgia as a central sensitization syndrome where amplified nervous system signals are hard for the brain to categorize. Suggested strategies include medical evaluation, addressing co-occurring issues and possible medications, checking B12, tracking triggers like dehydration or blood sugar dips, nutrition emphasizing whole plant foods and less saturated fat, CBT, mindfulness and slow breathing, gentle movement, weighted blankets, pacing, and finding support communities, while noting ongoing research and emerging tools.00:00 Invisible Internal Vibrations01:09 What Internal Tremors Are03:10 Why It Feels So Scary03:44 Rule Out Serious Causes04:59 Nervous System Explanation05:18 Central Sensitization Basics06:06 Interoception and Buzzing07:29 Fibromyalgia Connection08:19 Calming Tremors Toolkit08:41 Doctor and Holistic Workup09:42 Nutrition and Triggers10:13 Stress Regulation Practices10:54 Gentle Movement and Grounding11:27 Pacing to Prevent Flares11:57 Community Support and Hope13:29 Wrap Up and Share Story Support the showWhen I started this podcast and YouTube Channel—and the book that came before it—I had my patients in mind. Episode #514: Richmond Heath, an Australian physiotherapist, longtime vipassana meditator and senior trainer in tension and Trauma Releasing Exercises (TRE) discusses the involuntary movements that arise for some people in meditation. He argues they are not signs of dysfunction, but rather expressions of underlying bodily processes. It's how a person relates to them that matters most. In his late twenties, Heath developed chronic pain that resisted conventional treatment and forced him to abandon the physical activity that had once grounded him. Turning to vipassana meditation in the tradition of S.N. Goenka, he encountered intense discomfort but discovered that pain was partly a reaction layered onto sensation. By observing it rather than resisting it, its character changed, opening a new way of relating to the body. As his practice deepened, spontaneous movements began to arise. These ranged from subtle shifts to complex, fluid postures that felt unexpectedly free rather than painful. Because he was not consciously producing them, he experienced them as something happening through the body rather than something he was doing. Yet neither medical nor meditative frameworks could account for it. His vipassana teachers discouraged the movements, and eventually he was asked to leave a retreat; medicine, in turn, tended to framed them as manifestations of pathology. Despite this, he trusted his experience and continued observing. He later described these as “neurogenic movements” and came to understand them as part of a broader rhythm of activation and release. While initially interpreting them as trauma discharge, he expanded this view, noting similar patterns in early development, cultural practices, and states of heightened energy. This led him to conclude that no single framework fully explains the phenomenon. Encounters with Aboriginal elder Jack Beatson and later TRE provided validation and context. TRE, which deliberately elicits similar movements, confirmed that such responses can be accessed intentionally, but also reinforced that they function best when not controlled. Heath emphasizes discernment: the same process can regulate or destabilize depending on how it feels. His guiding question—“are you okay, and is it working for you?”—extends beyond meditation to everyday experiences, reframing reactions like panic as part of the body's attempts to adjust. Even in extreme conditions, such as conflict zones, these processes may offer limited but meaningful relief. Ultimately, Heath maintains an openness to interpretation, grounded in a simple principle that the Aboriginal elder told him: “Enjoy the ride!”

In this episode of The Filmumentaries Podcast, I'm joined by creature effects designer Alec Gillis, founder of Studio Gillis and co-founder of Amalgamated Dynamics Inc. (ADI) alongside Tom Woodruff Jr.Alec has spent more than four decades helping bring some of cinema's most memorable creatures to life. After beginning his career working under the legendary Stan Winston, he went on to contribute to films including Aliens, Predator, Alien³, Tremors, Death Becomes Her, Starship Troopers and many more.In this conversation we talk about how a childhood encounter with Ray Harryhausen's Jason and the Argonauts set him on this path, the early days building stop-motion creatures in his parents' garage, working for Roger Corman alongside a young James Cameron, and what it was like joining Stan Winston Studio during one of the most exciting periods in creature effects history. We also talk about the eight-week scramble to build the Predator, working with David Fincher on Alien³, forming ADI with Tom Woodruff Jr., and how practical creature effects continue to evolve in an industry now dominated by digital tools. This interview was recorded remotely, but I recently had the chance to visit Alec in Los Angeles while filming interviews for our upcoming Joe Alves documentary, where we spoke in person about his work on Jaws 3-D.Topics discussed• Discovering movie magic through Ray Harryhausen• Building stop-motion creatures as a kid• Learning the craft during the Roger Corman years• Meeting and working alongside James Cameron• Life inside Stan Winston Studio• Creating the Predator in just eight weeks• The production of Alien³ and working with David Fincher• Founding Amalgamated Dynamics Inc. with Tom Woodruff Jr.• Practical effects in the digital era• Mentoring the next generation of creature artistsSupport the PodcastIf you enjoy The Filmumentaries I hope you enjoy it.This podcast is completely independent and made possible by listener support. Alec Gillis stops by to have a heartfelt conversation about his fatherhood journey. He and I have an honest conversation about the influence his dad had on him to make his own choice on how to be a dad. He shares the life lessons he learned from his four daughters. After that we blend family and his career by talking about working with his daughter, Camille. We go into his fantastic career in the film industry and how his craft has evolved over the years. Lastly, we finish the interview with the Fatherhood Quick Five.  About Alec Gillis Alec Gillis grew up in Orange County, California within sight of the Disneyland fireworks show. As a kid he roamed the mean streets of Main Street Disneyland, sometimes summering on Tom Sawyer's Island. It was here he gained a lifelong appreciation of animatronics, but it was in the local movie theaters that he fell in love with genre films. At age 20 Gillis began working for Roger Corman on a film called Battle Beyond The Stars. This was along with James Cameron and Gale Anne Hurd. It wasn't long before Alec dropped out of UCLA Film School in favor of the education Corman offered. Gillis was recommended by James Cameron to Stan Winston, where Gillis worked on effects for classic films such as Aliens and Predator. In 1988 he co-founded Amalgamated Dynamics, Inc. (ADI) with Tom Woodruff, Jr. Tremors was the company's first feature, and the film's giant subterranean worms gained notoriety for Gillis. As of 2022, Gillis is now a solo Creature FX Designer, founding his new company, Studio Gillis. His mission is to continue the tradition of creating high quality practical characters and to promote the art of Practical FX. To that end, his production company, Pro Machina, produces modest budget genre films as well as creating miniature effects for films such as Alien: Romulus. Make sure you follow Alec on Instagram at @alec_gillis. Plus go to studiogillis.com to learn more about Alec and his work. Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows!   This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track!   Check out today's questions:    Sheena: Hi Dr C! Hope you and your team are well. I've been hearing a lot about colostrum lately and it piqued my interest. Can you speak a little about it? Do you use it? Is there a brand you would recommend? Is it safe for anyone? Who should avoid it? Side effects? I take a probiotic everyday, can colostrum replace this?? Looking forward to hearing your response. Thanks in advance!                                                                                                                                                         Frankie: Hi Stephen, My name is Frankie Im 21 years old, and I wanted to follow up from Episode 3382, where you mentioned my symptoms could be connected to gut issues, low vitamin D, magnesium, metals, or GERD. Since then, I followed a strict LPR diet for about two months  no gluten, coffee, alcohol, peanuts, oats, onions, garlic, broccoli, beans, etc. My LPR symptoms improved by around 70%, and while I still have some mucus in my throat, its nowhere near as potent as before. During and after the protocol, I focused on rebuilding my gut with some gut-rebuilding supplements and slowly reintroducing foods. Its now been about three months since finishing the protocol, and Ive gained around 14 pounds. I also still deal with loose stool almost every day, which hasnt improved much. It’s honestly shocked me because Im very dialed in with both my food and workouts, yet the weight gain and digestive changes still happened. I wanted to get your thoughts on what direction to take from here. I havent run the Big 5 protocol since Im based in Canada, and it would end up costing quite a bit more with shipping and exchange rates. Also, I just wanted to mention its surprising how many young people my age are struggling with digestive and gut related issues. Its becoming way too common. Thanks again for all the work you do, and I hope you have a great day I listen to you every morning. Frankie     Gary: Hi Dr. Cabral. Im 49, male & over the last 4 years taken a deep interest in my health. I had cerebral malaria (2003) & as a result developed essential tremor both hands. Listened to 2 podcasts & working on noticeable triggers like ltd caffeine & alcohol. It hasnt got worse, but really is there any way to reverse it? Partner is an IHP so DESTRESS at the heart of our approach) we want to do EVERYTHING we can. Thank you     Sienna: Hi Dr. Cabral - so excited about your new Pea Protein, got great feedback from the support team, however would love your response. Pea Protein safe for kids? Since DNS is I would approach it in same way, Dr. AI says generally kids get enough from food so not recommended… Do you give this to your daughters in same way you have it? Ie a little more protein in smoothies *daily* or just in baked goods like pancakes occasionally. Thank you! Then the show pivots into full New York sports pain, with the Rangers getting buried, “Fire Drury” chants, and the Nets openly tanking. After that, it's Steelers fan therapy time. They play viral fan reactions that range from blaming Arthur Smith to blaming the crowd itself, then get into the uncomfortable part: if Pittsburgh moves on from Tomlin, are there even enough legit candidates to replace a guy who never has a losing season? The debate turns into a bigger sports question: when you're sick of the ceiling, is blowing it up worth the risk? The hour finishes with a sharp breakdown of Aaron Rodgers' sideline blowups and why it hits differently when you have not earned years of trust in a locker room. Jets perspective, Steelers perspective, and the brutal truth about disappointment all collide.
