Thanks for your patience while this episode was being recorded, but we are back on schedule after a hectic week off. We were racing around all week, when we should have been racing to get this out and racing on the track with Speed Racer. What, the character's name is Speed Racer? How do we feel about cinnamon twists from Taco Bell? And why was Brandon nearly hit in the balls at the park? Tune in this week to find out all this and more, but only on "The Good, The Bad, & The Movies"!P.S. n Part 2, Alex opens up about the growing role of AI in art and how it raises serious concerns for creators like himself. We also take a nostalgic turn as he shares his childhood memories of 1960s Japanese animation — Speed Racer — and his thoughts on the rise of modern American adult animation.Alex reflects on the long-overdue recognition of classic comic book creators in today's Marvel and DC films, and what it meant to meet legends like Jack Kirby and Neal Adams. We revisit the origin stories behind Marvels and Kingdom Come, and reveal a near-miss — when Alex almost helped design a new Gatchaman team for an American rights holder. And for fans of Fantastic Four, Alex shares the story behind his Earth X visions of Marvel's First Family, and how it continues to influence his creative work.
Pastor Dru Rodriguez uses the excitement of Speed Racer to illustrate how we often rush through life, urging us to cease striving and trust in God's timing and authority.

Speed Racer. It's a masterwork. It also might give you a headache. We must live in that contradiction. Topics: Comic Books and post-continuity cinema, the movie's collagey qualities, the alternate Hollywood it presents, and the movie as a product of globalization. Matt's reccomendation. Corbin's. Next episode is about "Avatar," which you can watch on Disney+, if you dare.
If you watched the janky oddity that is the 2017 Death Note movie or the Scarlet Johansson Ghost in the Shell that also came out in 2017 (what a tough year) this is the episode for you! Anime is massive and yet a successful live action adaptation of one that's as good as the source material seems harder to find than the one piece treasure (With One Piece being the exception that breaks the rule) . Jake explains why this is and we all analyze some of the attempts including Cowboy Bebop, the insanity that is the Wachowski's Speed Racer, and yes even Dragon Ball Evolution because we love entertaining you more than we respect ourselves.Want even more Nerd of Mouth? This week Craig, Phil, and Will watch the 2008 CGI soup of an action movie Speed Racer! Also on the pod, the boys finally get their hands on that pesky wallet!
Show notes provided by Joe PelusoOnce again, the back door to Mint Condition swings open and your hosts James and Joe are present to discuss, dissect and disseminate all things pop culture. In this episode the boys launch into the most recent movie trailers of this summer's two (We hope!) blockbuster films: SUPERMAN and FANTASTIC FOUR: FIRST STEPS. Geeking out over what they've seen in these two teases (Hey, Ma Kent is in the film! And Galactus is walking cross-town--hopefully in the bicycle lane.), theories, questions, and possibilities abound. Is Luthor using Metamorpho as a walking chemistry set? Is this version of the Silver Surfer Shalla Bal? Will Jimmy Olsen finally have something to do in a Superman movie? And how distracted will Reed be in the F.F. film? These, and many other pressing questions, fill a fun-filled hour of this most recent "back of the store chat". And stick around for our recommendations (Ironheart, Dexter: Resurrection, some DC Absolute talk, Space Ghost and Speed Racer, and Ultimate Spider-Man.) And in a rare moment, that can only be described as a "respectful" mini rant, James and Joe question Marvel's editorial obstinacy of keeping Peter Parker in a perpetual lifetime holding pattern. It promises to be a summer of pop culture fun. And it starts here with you, the MInt faithful. ENJOY!

Episode SummaryErin and Rachel travel 700 years into the future to discuss WALL-E (2008), Pixar's robot romance with an unintentionally anti-capitalist message. In this episode, writer David Pepose joins the conversation to discuss his take on Space Ghost, the newly released Captain Planet, and the much-anticipated Speed Racer arriving this July. It was an incredible experience getting to chat with him! Fantastic Comic Fan Podcast Website
On Episode No. 121 of Fear and Loathing in Cinema, America's favorite caffeine-fueled cinephiles do what any responsible adults would: they metaphorically strap themselves to the hood of a psychedelic Hot Wheels car and rocket straight into the candy-colored chaos of 2008's Speed Racer. It's the episode longtime listeners have waited for and longtime haters will pretend not to enjoy. While co-host Dan Moran is presumably still hungover on a beach somewhere in Jamaica, contemplating existence through the bottom of a rum bottle and the lens of a pair of novelty sunglasses, Chelsea Nicole returns from podcasting exile. Once vocal critics of the film, both Preston Barta and Chelsea arrive reborn, their opinions evolved, their chakras aligned with the Mach 5. It's character development worthy of the Wachowskis themselves. Joining the gang is none other than Kristi Shimek, editing wizard, recurring guest, and one-time spiritual leader of My Bloody Podcast's Lake Mungo episode. In a twist so poetic it would make M. Night Shyamalan consider early retirement, it was Kristi, yes, Kristi, who chose Speed Racer as this episode's topic. Turns out, she didn't just like the movie. She wrote her thesis on it. A thesis. About Speed Racer. This is, academically speaking, a baller move. The post Episode #121 – Speed Racer (2008) first appeared on Boomstick Comics.

David Pepose has had an amazing year since our last talk. He's back to fill us in on getting his dream project (Captain Planet), a new Space Ghost series, and his electrifying approach to Speed Racer.A former crime reporter turned Ringo Award-winning comic book creator, David Pepose has written on hit titles such as Punisher, Moon Knight: City of the Dead, Savage Avengers, Fantastic Four, Hulk, Avengers Unlimited, and Darth Vader: Black, White & Red, as well as launched critically acclaimed original series including Spencer & Locke, Going to the Chapel, Grand Theft Astro, The O.Z., Scout's Honor, The Devil That Wears My Face, and more.David's books have been featured in The Hollywood Reporter, ComicBook.com, and io9, and have ranked on Barnes & Noble's Best Comics and Graphic Novels list. His writing has been called “stunningly subversive” by IGN and “an absurdly good time” by Nerdist, while Syfy has described his work as “utterly insane or pure genius (or admittedly, maybe both).”In addition to developing properties for comics, TV, and film, he has also worked for CBS, Netflix, and Universal Studios. Raised in St. Louis, David currently resides in sunny Los Angeles, where he lives with his understanding partner, their rambunctious terrier, and at least six deadlines. This week, we're busting out the slammer and potentially wishing we were back in it depending on who you ask, as we team up with the canary-clad copper to take down a star-studded mob in a wildly stylish and outlandishly conceived blockbuster starring a charming old man incapable of doing action scenes, that's been seemingly buried in the Disney vault in the years since. It's 1990's Dick Tracy, directed and produced by Warren Beatty, and starring Beatty, Madonna, Al Pacino, Glenne Headly, Charlie Korsmo, Mandy Patinkin, Dustin Hoffman, Seymour Cassel, William Forsythe, Charles Durning, Dick Van Dyke, Paul Sorvino, James Caan, Kathy Bates and Catherine O'Hara. Most of these stars are unrecognizeable under the monstrous makeup required to make them look like their vintage crime comic strip counterparts, but Pacino made enough of an impression with a wildly comedic take on his typical mobster persona that he netted an Oscar nom for Best Supporting Actor, losing to Joe Pesci for GoodFellas. While Beatty is at least a decade too old to be proper fit as the movie's lead, it's his ambition behind the camera that makes the movie such a curiosity all these years later, as the film is either an enchanting dreamscape filled with unsolvable How Did They Do That movie magic puzzles, or a steaming pile of neon-drenched puke depending on which of our two hosts you ask. But that's okay, as we have some heated disagreement this week that is maybe the closest we've yet come to vintage Siskel & Ebert kinda stuff. Plus: We've both been to the theater and are happy to sound off on Ryan Coogler's latest as JMo and Hayley both greatly enjoyed Sinners in the cinema, and Justin's got a bonus theatrical field report on Drop, the latest from Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon. If you'd like to watch Dick Tracy before listening along to our conversation, good luck finding a physical copy, and Disney will seemingly never stream this thing on Disney+ -- possibly for rights reasons to avoid paying anything more to Warren Beatty, or possibly because they are cowards who are ashamed of the fun movie they made. Either way, it's tough to find outside of renting it on YouTube. Other works discussed in this episode include Creed, Fruitvale Station, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Puss In Boots: The Last Wish, Mad Max: Fury Road, Loki, The Accountant, The Perfect Storm, Bridge of Spies, War Horse, The Adventures of Tintin, Red Eye, Trap, Reign of Fire, Surrogates, The Expendables 2, The Last Boy Scout, Princess Mononoke, Hook, This Is The Tom Green Documentary, Cutthroat Island, Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl, G20, The Silence of the Lambs, Longlegs, Resident Orca, Avatar: The Way of Water, Blackfish, Batman ('89), Batman Returns, Batman Forever, Batman & Robin, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, X-Men, Blade, The Shadow, The Phantom, The Rocketeer, Darkman, Speed Racer, Furiosa, Challengers and Sin City, among others. We'll be back (more than likely) next week, with another special in-theaters spectacular, as 100+ episodes after we covered the original film, it is tax season once again and we're back for more Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal in The Accountant 2. So look for that next Friday, and until then we'll see you at the movies!!

Episode 220 is up Lets talk about the animated 1967 series of Speed Racer with his powerful Mach 5. When it comes to supporters of the show, Tony Farina is the OG. And when it comes to stitch ups, the same could be said! Back when Chris and Dave were still finding their way with Comics In Motion, Tony found the podcast and suggested both Speed Racer and Tank Girl. And at the time, Chris believed these were the worst movies he'd ever seen. Fast forward to 2025, Tony has chosen a favourite of his. The much maligned, Hudson Hawk.Hudson Hawk was an infamously chaotic and overblown affair, marked by creative clashes, ballooning costs, and a shifting tone that left even the filmmakers unsure of what they were making. Conceived as a pet project for Bruce Willis, who co-wrote the story, the film was meant to be a stylish, fast-paced heist comedy with a quirky sense of humor. However, as production went on, the film became a strange hybrid of slapstick, action, and self-aware absurdity. Director Michael Lehmann, best known for Heathers, struggled to balance the various tones, while Willis—at the peak of his Hollywood power—reportedly had significant influence over creative decisions, leading to constant rewrites and improvisation on set.Adding to the mayhem, Hudson Hawk had a bloated budget of around $65 million, due in part to its globe-trotting locations, elaborate stunts, and extensive reshoots. The film was primarily shot in Italy, making use of grand European backdrops for its bizarre plot about an art heist intertwined with Leonardo da Vinci's inventions. Despite its high production values and an ensemble cast including Danny Aiello, Andie MacDowell, and Richard E. Grant, the film flopped spectacularly at the box office and was widely panned by critics. Over time, however, Hudson Hawk has developed a cult following, appreciated for its sheer audacity, oddball humor, and the sheer spectacle of witnessing Hollywood excess at its most baffling. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, so become a supporter.www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesbackTrailer Guy Plot SummaryIn a world where stealing priceless artefacts is just another day at the office, legendary cat burglar Hudson Hawk is fresh out of prison and ready to go straight, until he's blackmailed into pulling off the heist of a lifetime. With his loyal partner Tommy Five-Tone by his side, Hawk must dodge ruthless criminals, corrupt CIA agents, and a deranged billionaire couple who want him to steal Leonardo da Vinci's secret alchemy machine. From the rooftops of Rome to high-speed chases and over-the-top action, Hudson Hawk sings, cracks wise, and fights for his life in a high-stakes adventure where the only thing more dangerous than the mission... is surviving it.thevhsstrikesback@gmail.comhttps://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback

They're back! Writer Rick Quinn and artist Dave Chisholm return to the podcast to discuss Spectrum #2, the second issue in their science fiction tour through an alternate musical history. As the plot reveals itself, adding new elements and several more splash pages, we dig deeper into its characters, emotions, and references. Adding this conversation atop our previous one about the first issue, we're building something grand - a comic book dissection as we've never done before - so we might as well officially make it a Book Club and invite everyone listening to join in on the comics summit. Have you read Spectrum #1? Have you read Spectrum #2? Do you have any thoughts? Do you have questions? We want to hear them! CLICK HERE and drop them into the comments. Next month, when we return to the podcast with Rick Quinn and Dave Chisholm, we'll work our way through them on the show. This is your chance to shape the conversation and connect with the big ideas about art these creators are exploring. Spectrum #2 introduces Ada Latimer, the retail warrior trying to keep her Unpopular Pop record store afloat. Within the comic's first few moments, she meets the reality-bending Melody from issue one and has a cosmic encounter that would curl Jack Kirby's toes. A quest is discovered, one that will slam Ada and Melody together as they search for a mythical music producer while battling a creature of song called Echo. Now, more than ever, community offers relief. We must find our people and love and fight by their side. For us, we feel the most connected when we're engaged with art, whether it takes the form of music, movies, or comic books. Creating a book club, determined to cover this series for the next five or so months, is an act of hope and optimism. And so is joining one. Spectrum #2 is now available from Mad Cave Studios, wherever rad comics are sold. Make sure you're following Dave Chisholm on his Website, TikTok, Instagram, and Bluesky. In 2024, we published 58 Comic Book Couples Counseling episodes. However, that was not the total Comic Book Couples Counseling experience. Over on our Patreon, we published an additional 61 episodes, including our Married to Singlesseries, where we talk with comic book creators about their favorite single issues. In 2025, we'll make these a regular thing, starting with Tyler Crook this week, diving deep into his cherished Mage: The Hero Discovered #6. Crook has appeared on the podcast multiple times, mostly exploring his exceptional Dark Horse Comics series, The Lonesome Hunters (links to those episodes below). He's a passionate, enthusiastic champion of this medium, and that devotion began at a very young age thanks to books like Mage: The Hero Discovered. We enjoyed this conversation with Crook about this comic so much that we've decided to drop it into the main podcast feed to entice some of you over to the CBCC Patreon, which we consider one of the most welcoming, loving comic book communities on the internet. Published by Comico in March of 1985, Mage: The Hero Discovered #6 landed just as the industry shifted. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 arrived the year before, while Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns were just on the horizon. Comics were ready to celebrate themselves as thematically rich, adult entertainment. NOT. KIDS. STUFF. Mage: The Hero Discovered #6 was written and illustrated by Matt Wagner and features additional inks by Sam Kieth. The series follows Kevin Matchstick, who is basically a stand-in for Wagner, as he tumbles into a fantasy adventure where each obstacle represents some issue or situation from his own life. Be warned, our conversation with Tyler Crook spoils the entirety of the sixth issue, as well as some critical plot points from the rest of the series. Although, knowledge of those plot points won't ruin your overall reading experience if you decide to read after you've listened to the episode. We make the Comic Book Couples Counseling Patreon as cheap as we can. Our "Smitten Kitten" level costs only a dollar and gives you access to all the Patreon episodes. Our "Dearly Beloved" tier is $5, which grants you access to our Slack community.
