**Discussion begins at 5:15**In the 1970s and 80s, the USSR had a dedicated branch of the navy researching “anomalous phenomena”, which used Soviet submarines to track USOs in the Black Sea, the Baltic Sea, Lake Baikal, and the Arctic Ocean. These objects allegedly moved at impossible speeds, changed directions instantly, and were seen emerging from or diving into the water without creating splash disturbances. Then, in 2009, a number of documents related to the USSR research into UFOs/USOs revealed the story of the Lake Baikal swimmers. There were declassified reports that 7 Navy divers on a training mission in Lake Blaikal, the world's oldest and deepest lake, had encountered mysterious humanoid beings underwater. These figures, which came to be known as the Baikal Swimmers, were 9-10 feet tall, wearing tight silver suits with umbrella like helmets on their heads, but lacked scuba gear or breathing apparati. The divers told their superiors who instructed them to capture one. The divers again made contact with these acquatic beings, but failed to capture one as a sudden and powerful force allegedly repelled them. As a result, the divers all were propelled to the surface and leading them all to suffer from decompression sickness. Three of the divers died as a result. But what were the swimmers really? Extraterrestrial? Unknown sea creature? – perhaps one of the many species endemic only to Lake Baikal.. Or is this another urban legend gone viral? Send us a textSupport the showTheme song by INDA
Radiohead's second album The Bends was released on the 13th March, 1995 and exactly 30 years later Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy interviewed producer John Leckie on the story behind the album at an event at The British Library. The interview was followed by an uninterrupted vinyl playback of the full album on British audio brand Bowers & Wilkins' iconic 800 Series loudspeakers, which were used in the mixing of The Bends at Abbey Road Studios. The Bends is generally considered to show the remarkable evolution of their sound, which soon made them one of the most acclaimed bands in the world. With a healthy dose of the guitar rock and melancholic pop that characterised breakthrough single “Creep”, it also features beautiful ballads, a new range to Thom Yorke's voice, blistering riffs and solos from Jonny Greenwood and multiple acoustic treats. It was produced by John Leckie, one of the most important and distinctive producers in British music. John Leckie has had an extraordinary career. His early career at Abbey Road Studios, saw him working with John Lennon and George Harrison and then as an engineer for Pink Floyd's Meddle and Wish You Were Here and Paul McCartney and Wings' Red Rose Speedway. Among much else he then produced Public Image Ltd debut single, a brilliant early sweep of albums by Simple Minds, The Stone Roses, Muse and many others.
Honoring the dead by washing the body is a ritual nearly as old as humankind. Jews observe taharah, rooting the practice in Ecclesiastes: “As we come forth, so we shall return.” In Islamic tradition, washing the deceased as an act of devotion and love.Joy Harjo, former poet laureate and citizen of the Muscogee Nation, expected to honor her mother's death and life by washing her body, but as she reveals in the introduction to her new book, the ritual didn't happen — leaving her to wander through grief without a touchstone. Harjo's new book is called “Washing My Mother's Body,” and she joins host Kerri Miller on this week's Big Books and Bold Ideas to talk about how this poem was able to bend time for her — and could be used as a model for others walking through grief without the guideposts of ritual. They also discuss the artwork created for the poem by fellow Muscogee citizen Dana Tiger, which adds beauty and vibrancy to a poem about saying good-bye. Guest:Joy Harjo served three terms as the twenty-third Poet Laureate of the United States from 2019 to 2022. She is the author of several poetry collections, plays, children's books, and memoirs, as well as the editor of multiple anthologies of Native poetry. Her new book is “Washing My Mother's Body: A Ceremony for Grief.” Subscribe to Big Books and Bold Ideas with Kerri Miller on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, RSS or anywhere you get your podcasts.Subscribe to the Thread newsletter for the latest book and author news and must-read recommendations.
Blue Lake holds a mystery deep beneath its surface. And Martin Robson wants to solve it. The British diver descends into the murky depths. But hundreds of feet underwater, an invisible and excruciating force suddenly overwhelms him. One thing I love about these episodes is that I get to mix humor with real life. On this episode of On the Bright Side, I'm talking about how sometimes we need to break instead of constantly bending just to please other people, because the more we bend, the more we lose ourselves in the process. And honestly, is it even burning a bridge when we break … or are we just clearing a path for something new? But of course, before we get into all that deep stuff, I've got to talk about pop culture, my silly opinions, and what's been going on in life lately. OH and of course On the Bright Side's FIRST event: Wake Up To Wellness!!! Love Y'ALL!!
In this episode of the Teach Different podcast, Dan and Steve Fouts explore a Japanese proverb: 'The bamboo that bends is stronger than the oak that resists.' They discuss the claim of the quote, highlighting that the bamboo that bends symbolizes flexibility and adaptability. The conversation delves into the counterclaim calling for a balance between adaptability and standing firm on principles. The conversation ends with some essential questions such as, when is it good to bend like the bamboo and when to stand firm like an oak tree.

It's time for another college football KOTN Showdown as Doug Lesmerises and Bill Landis pit BYU and Indiana against each other as upstarts from 2024 who are trying to, and could, continue their program momentum with runs at the playoff in 2025. Who would you rather be this season? But first, Doug is joined by Connor O'Gara of Saturday Down South. O'Gara has to admit that Doug is a genius for one of his takes last season, then it's a discussion of whether the South can admit that the North is now on the same level when it comes to college football winning and depth. Then a couple Southern teams to watch are discussed, including Alabama, Georgia and LSU. Finally, Doug and Bill wrap things up with Whatcha, including society's difficulty with Uranus. Thanks for joining Kings of the North.

In our continuing anniversary coverage of The Bends, we speak with Randee Dawn, a journalist and author who 30 years ago spent several days with Radiohead on the road right after they released their sophomore album. She regales us with stories of what they were like back then, before they became the critical darlings they are today. Are they really nice boys? Who is the dad of the group? What was worrying Thom? It's an illuminating conversation about a band who at the time was on the precipice of something great! Also, we have a mini-newspile where we discuss Radiohead's all but announced fall tour, the first trailer for PT Anderson's new film with intriguing new music from Jonny, what legendary minimalist composer Steve Reich thinks of Jonny and Radiohead, and Thom's unexpected involvement in Hamlet Hail to the Thief. This week, we celebrate the music of one of the most important bands of the '90s and beyond, Radiohead. Since the release of their first EP Drill over 32 years ago (!!), Radiohead continued to innovate and reinvent their music, challenging themselves and their fans. From their post-grunge anthem "Creep" (1992) to Britpop-era tour de force The Bends (1995) to the ambitious masterpiece OK Computer (1997) to the millennial sounds of Kid A (2000) to latter day masterpieces like In Rainbows (2007), the Oxford, England Rock & Roll Hall of Famers have inspired two generations of forward thinking musicians. Among those musicians are our Third Lads, Heather Dickson and Patrick Ahern* from the avant-garde pop duo Slender Dan. (*NOT "Dan," as Brett erroneously called him before the recording started.) Slender Dan debuted its first EP on KEXP in March of 2021. Since then, the band has released a full-length album, GESTALT, as well as several EPs and singles. As longtime musicians in the Los Angeles, Boston, Seattle, and now Nashville music scenes, the members of Slender Dan have come together to create a sound that can best be described as some kind of Thom Yorke/Billie Eilish/Miike Snow/Aphex Twin lovechild. In what could be one of the more unhinged O3L episodes, "Safe Gregg" and "7-Inch Brett" naturally chat with Heather and Patrick about the lasting influence of Radiohead, but also about two-man luges, current pop girls, Kansas, Yo Yo Ma, Napoleon Dynamite, Chumbawamba, puppies, ODing on energy drinks, Electric Company parties, and the distinct possibility that Heather MAY actually be Brett's daughter. Plus, we also shout out a recommended podcast by friend of the show Dave Gebroe: Discograffiti. A new year brings a new champion, and the 2025 college football national champions are the Ohio State Buckeyes! However, there was a bigger phenomenon that occurred off the field that is even greater than a trophy. Jesus won! This is a mantra that many college football teams lived by this season. Two of the most faith-centered teams happened to play each other for the title. It was so apparent that even ESPN had to mention how each team's faith elevated their play. Looks like ESPN finally bends the knee to Jesus. In other news, Trump's inauguration speech was one of the all-time greatest ever given by a president, completely dismantling the former administration, whose members were sitting in the front row. The woke era is over, and America is back. Steve Kim and T.J. Moe join the show to talk about ESPN's sudden change, Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson accepting the Chicago Bears' head coaching job, and Nick Saban for college football commissioner. Jesus and football. What's better than that? Tune in! Many topics like this and more on “Fearless.” We want to hear from the Fearless Army!!
